Customer Reviews:

  • Fans of Myron and Win--Do Not Miss This One
Harlan Coben is a terrific suspense/thriller writer and at the top of my must read list. But it is his Myron Bolitar series that first hooked me and which I cannot put down once I begin. If you have never read any of the exploits of Myron/Win/Esperanza et.al, do yourself a favor and explore this excellent series of fine thrillers.

In "Long Lost", Myron and Win fly to Paris to heed the cry for help of an old flame, Terese Collins, who once helped Myron recover during a difficult time. Terese's ex-husband has disappeared after summoning her to Paris and evidence is uncovered suggesting that their daughter did not die in a tragic car accident 10 years earlier as believed.

Before the story even unfolds, Myron is arrested, questioned, released and followed by police, nefarious characters, homeland security, Interpol, and Mossad. What has he stumbled into by answering a call for help from an old and maybe, future love? What can possibly tie all these elements together along with cryogenics, adoption agencies, terroist cells, and deadly jihadists?

Coben adroitly presents a very real mystery and quickly wraps it in suspense and thrill a minute pacing. The reader is unsure about the surface mystery but soon becomes engulfed in a good versus evil tale revolving around deeply buried terrorist cells, a hideously evil twist on creating and enlisting American terrorist sympathizers, and, somewhat awkwardly, a perpective on modern Homeland Security laws and procedures.

The plotting is taut, credible, and tightly woven. The pacing is fast and furious resulting in many "can't-put-it-down" sessions. As always, Coben develops believable, interesting, and, often times, conflicted characters. Myron and his best friend, the deadly Win Lockwood, are two of the defining characters in current "buddy/partner" escapist literature. Coben's dialogue is always "spot-on" but the on-going dialogue between Myron and Win is always so real, so believeable, and so humorous that it often brings a smile to this reader's face and/or a verbal chuckle. They are the type of characters that many would love to share a beer with only to leave with tears of mirth from an extended bull session.

Make no mistake, "Long Lost" is a serious novel with heavy undercurrents including a disturbing section where Myron is secretly held, tortured, and psychologically damaged by Homeland Security agents. The actual payoff to the mystery surrounding the death of Terese's husband and the possibility of her daughter still being alive will chill many readers with its diabolical implications. But, as it should be, for long time fans of Myron and Win, "Long Lost" is a great and needed tonic.

  • Weakest Coben Novel in Quite Some Time
I love Harlan Coben, who really is one of the best suspense novelists currently working. Two of his earlier novels, TELL NO ONE and GONE FOR GOOD, are two of the enjoyable thrillers I've read in recent years.

Unfortunately, LONG LOST is easily Coben's weakest novel in over a decade. I'm not sure what Coben was aiming for here -- the plot is an over-the-top affair involving a terrorist plot, and its sheer absurdity makes it tough to take seriously. In the end, the whole thing reads like a treatment for a bad action movie.

Even worse, the characterization is strangely flat, which makes it difficult to care for any of the key players in the story. While this is a Myron Bolitar novel, Bolitar comes across as strangely superficial in LONG LOST, more like a square-jawed hero than the vulnerable character we've grown to love in prior books. In particular, I thought the love triangle subplot of this book was severely underdeveloped, with Coben only devoting a handful of pages to a major event in Bolitar's personal life.

My advice is to skip LONG LOST, and to focus on Coben's earlier work, which is far, far, better than this.

  • This author has a lot of people fooled
This is one of the worst books I've read in several years. I found
myself constantly becoming angry at the author. It is not funny. It
is not clever. It is totally unbelievable. There are many really good
writers trying to get published and they publish this claptrap instead.

  • new direction for Myron and Coben
Harlan Coben writes two kinds of books, twist in the tale thrillers and the adventures of Myron Bolitar, sports agent. This is a Bolitar tale but the author blends in his thriller themes of twists and the past coming back to haunt you onto Myron and his friends. He then raises the stakes and adds international terrorism to the pot but the final mix does not quite sit right in the stomach!
Myron is contacted by ex-lover Teresa and rushes off to Paris when asked for help and finds himself in a whole heap of trouble.
Rather then the usual dogged determination of Myron (with the assistance of lethal friend Win) against 'normal' bad guys here we have Myron up against shadowy Government organisations, terrorist plots and questions about the end justifying the means (as covered in the current series of 24 and Vince Flynn's latest novel). It doesn't quite work, some occasional lazy plot devices and threads that are not tied up do not quite help this new direction for the author.
This is not the best Bolitar novel but it is still quite readable and although average and a three star book in my view, it does not deserve either the high or low praise it has received in other reviews. ...more info
  • Neither Stellar nor Stinker
I thought this was a quick and interesting read. There is a fair amount of suspense in the book and all-in-all it is well crafted. I would have liked to have had more appearances from Esperanza and Big Cindy; they each only have minor impact in this book, especially Big Cindy who only gets a throwaway walk-on role. Mr. Coben has changed his Bolitar character, taking him further and further from "sports" agent and bringing him closer and closer to "secret" agent. Still, it is an interesting tale, appropriately gruesome and disturbing at times with enough injections of humor to give the reader a break. This is by far not Mr. Coben's finest effort but it isn't his worst, either. I recommend you borrow this book; don't buy it (unless you have to have a copy of everything written by Harlan Coben.)...more info
  • Myron Bolitar Returns with Gusto and Charm
I'm pleased to once again visit Myron Bolitar's compelling, dangerous and sexy world. Myron, a once basketball star and natural athlete, is caught up this time with a terrorist group. Harlan Coben uses beautiful women, a powerful male partner and a cast of characters who have distinct traits. Coben's strongest technique is depicting his characters in speech and actions relevant to their roles.
The book begins at a child's basketball game where Myron shows his temper, fighting agility and professional dislike of the coach. The coach embarrases his girl friend's son and defends the child's honor. The girl friend, who is a 9/11 widow, does not really appreciate our Myron which makes it easy for Myron to answer a request of Terese Collins, a beautiful lover from ten years prior. The real plot begins which involves the death of Terese's child, her ex-husband, Parisian police and the fascinating, best friend and wealthy partner, Win.
Myron has to stay a step ahead of Interpol, Homeland Security and Mossad. The book is a great page turner loaded with action. It's not all believable but if it were, the story would become boring.
I really enjoy Coben's characterization of Myron's parents. The love between Myron and his father is poignant and caught me unawares. Myron's mother is a realistic protective parent as was the Orthodox Jewish doctor as a medical, ethical professional. I believe Coben's biggest strength is his consistency of depictions: the Parisian policeman, the soon-to-be ex girl friends and the loyal staff in Myron's office. Exciting story, I hope it's not true!...more info
  • First Time Myron Bolitar Reader
I have read several of the Coben stand alone novels but this is the first of the Bolitar series that I read. I enjoyed the characters and especially Win. Most of the reviews have indicated that the side characters are cameos. I will read earlier Bolitar novels to learn more about these characters.

This book is a great story but ends up being a little to far fetched for my taste. I realize that most thrillers do not always hang together, but this one has more loose ends than most.

Coben is a good writer but I think his stength is not the major world wide conspiracy books. ...more info
  • As good as it gets
I read a lot and was looking for a new author and find Coben. I have enjoyed his other books but I just love the Myron Bolitar character and all his side kicks. This new book, Long Lost does deliver. I would have like a bit more of the girls from the office. The problem is that when I find a new author I can read all of their books faster than they can write them. I have read and enjoyed all of Coben's books....more info
  • Myron Bolitar's Back With A Bang!
With his current relationship crumbling into dust, Myron Bolitar's emotionally primed when he receives a call from an old flame asking him for help.

Ten years ago, Myron and Terese Collins helped each other out of the depths of emotional devastation by having a brief but torrid romance, after which Terese disappeared. Now she's asking for Myron's help in resolving the questions of why she's a suspect in the murder of her ex-husband, and what really happened on the night a decade ago when her daughter died, leaving her the emotional wreck Myron originally met.

As Myron himself is in need of a mission to once again give focus to his life, he enlists the aid of his trusted circle - especially the irrepressible and fascinating Win Lockwood - and goes to Paris to help his damsel in distress. From there, he finds himself involved in perhaps the one adventure of his life that exceeds his capabilities, surrounded by French and American intelligence types, terrorists, and the mystery of what actually happened on one fateful night a decade ago.

Coben is a terrifically talented writer who brings his all to his signature Bolitar series and this latest entrant. This story unwinds at a furious pace, is tigtly plotted, and peopled with fascinating characters. He manages to sustain the excitement and mystery right up to the surprising conclusion.

A solid five stars. Get it.

  • Book Just did not work for me
So disappointing! I have read all the Myron books and loved them. This one was so disjointed. Right from the start when Coben turns Ali into a petty and secretive character in order to set up his story with the "new" love, things feel wrong in this book. The comic lines that Myron is so well known for do not work with the torture scenes and the high body count. I felt like Coben had read some of the other "grittier" series and decided he would up his torture quotient just to fit in. The terrorist ideas might have worked as a stand-alone book (although it would have needed a much better ending) but it does not work at all as a Myron novel. For me, I wish I had skipped this one altogether. ...more info
  • Coben at the top of his game with Myron
Coben is at his best in this novel and it is even better because it involves Myron, Win, Esperanza and the cast of characters from the series. The book actually reminded me a little bit of "The Charm School" by Neslon Demille without giving too much away. Long Lost is the same great formula, but it is also somewhat different and more action packed than other Myron Bolitar books, and it also takes place mostly overseas. I LOVED THIS BOOK, and I hope there are more MB books in the future....more info
  • O no, he changed readers!
I love Harlan Coben and Myron Bolitar series and have listened to almost all of the books on CD. I could hardly wait to listen to his latest novel. However, as good as the subject amtter and book were, the reader was new. This one did not do justice to the book! My mind's picture of Wyn was destroyed- The reader could not really get the "Articulate" right! What a disappointment! The material was great, but.........more info

  • Great First Half; Middling Second Half
Myron Bolitar is back! For the first half of this book at least. In the 2nd half Myron turns into a generic thriller hero, devoid of the charm and wit that fans of Bolitar have come to expect. The reason is easy enough to explain: (MINOR SPOILER ALERT) Myron goes through some pretty severe torture in the unaccounted for period of time between parts 1 and 2 of the book. Torture would probably change my personal outlook on life as well.

The book's first half features classic Bolitar shenanigans populated by all the returning costars from earlier books in the series. The supporting cast doesn't have a lot to do, but they help form a base for Myron to anchor himself to throughout the book when situations crop up in which the support is needed. The latter half of the book is largely an action-movie in which Myron takes on the Bruce Willis part.

Overall the book was good, but it wasn't Coben's best. ...more info
  • Long Lost? Far-Fetched.
Myron Bolitar has been a favorite character of mine, so I was delighted to see a new book featuring him. Alas. Somewhere between the last one I read and "Long Lost" Myron has acquired a son (as has Esperanza!) and gone from sports agent to any-old-kind of agent. Did Coben run out of sports??? Further, he has taken up with the needy Therese Collins, who apparently was designed to launch him into a new career as 007, fighting terrorists and going global. Sorry. That's not my Myron, and I find this jump just a little too big to take. Gone are his clients (what happened to Myron, the agent who puts his clients first?) Gone is Esperanza, who plays such a minor role she might as well be missing in action. Even Win pops up only when needed, like a reliable Kleenex. Is Coben looking for (and writing for) a blockbuster, shoot-em-up, blow-'em-up movie contract? I prefer Myron Bolitar as Jerry Maguire, not Bruce Willis. Give this one a miss.

(Oh..I listened to this on the Unabridged CD version--bring back the original reader. Stephen Weber just doesn't cut it.)...more info
  • Love the characters; plot stretches credulity
First Sentence: "YOU don't know her secret," Win said to me.

When talent/sports agent Myron Bolitar's girlfriend, Ali, breaks it off, there is no reason not to respond to a call from his former lover, Terese Collins, and fly to Paris. Terese had married, had a daughter who died in a car accident, and divorced.

Myron is stopped, but released, by French Homeland security, but finds he is followed as he meets with Terese. Things quickly turn to shootouts in cafes, terrorist groups, murder and the possibility that Terese's daughter may, in fact, be alive.

The plot was certainly timely as the story involved terrorism, black sites, torture and twilight sleep. The plot was very good, in a twisty, horrible way, as it dealt with the dangers of extremism, and asks some serious questions while wrapped up in a story with some very real characters.

I had forgotten how much I like these characters; Myron, his parents, Esparanza, Big Cindy and, yes, even Win about whom we learn a bit more. There is a lot of violence and one scene with Myron's health that does stretch credulity just a bit.

The pace never slowed down, from beginning to end. It was an exciting, somewhat thought provoking, enjoyable read
