Customer Reviews:

  • Awesome GPS
After all the research and review, I ended up with this unit. It was everything I needed and more. It came with all the hardware for car use and computer downloads, so there is no need to buy the extras, unless you want a case. I gave this unit a throrough testing and it proved flawless each time. The rerouting is fast, if you decide to go a different way. Address lookup along with Points of Interest are great. It even comes with a 3 month free trial to MSN Direct and free map downloads. The feature which was a great help was the alternate language. Since the wife understands Japanese better, I was able to download her language and now vocal directions can be given in English or Japanese. The sleek design allows you to place it directly in your pocket instead of leaving it in the car. There is also a pedestrian feature that allows for walking directions. I am extremely happy with this purchase and highly recomend it.

  • More Than Pleased
This is the first nav system that I've owned. I had previously just printed color maps from Google Maps and kept them in a loose leaf binder when I went on a trip to places that I hadn't been before. After riding with someone that had a GPS nav system, I decided to give it a try.

Since I was new to these systems, I had a bit of trouble figuring out how to set the system up for my trip (and I did read the included manual as well as on-line instructions). Once I figured out that the best way to navigate to each location was to put the destination into my favorites, then either nav directly to the destination, or, if I needed to specify an alternate to the default recommended route, to set up my own route, with the appropriate way points.

A couple of weeks ago, I took a photography safari to Florida, to several shooting sites and motels that I had not been to previously. I set up each destination in the Nuvi, and then selected the target destination from the Where To? menu. I couldn't believe how much easier the trip was with this system.

Instead of worrying about which lane to get in as I drove down the interstate, I just followed the directions from the nav system. What an improvement. With regard to the specific features of the 885T, I found it to be easy to use, though not as quick responding to my inputs as I'm used to with a PC. Still, it wasn't bad. Once I figured out how to set up routes with way points, It was fairly easy to do. I did use Google Maps to help with this process. To me, this is one of the advantages of a portable unit like the Nuvi as opposed to a built-in nav system - you can carry it into the house and sit in front of the computer to plan your trips.

I hooked up the Nuvi to my Bluetooth-enable cell phone, and that worked as advertised. I was pleasantly surprised the first evening that I was driving, when the unit switched from daylight to night mode. It made the display easier on the eyes. I only had a couple of occasions where the lane view feature activated, but it did work as advertised, and was very helpful. The estimated arrival time feature was neat, and it became a sort of game to see if I could bring this time down - usually though, it went up as I got stuck at stop lights and in traffic. Still a very useful feature.

Another feature that was extremely useful was the display of the speed limit. This was incredibly accurate, usually changing in less than a second as I passed the signs on the highway.

The only thing that I really didn't like about the Nuvi was the included MSN service, which was basically useless to me, since I don't live in a covered area. I would still have used it for travel, except that when I started the registration process, I was asked detailed personal questions which are frankly, none of Microsoft's business. I decided that the limited functionality that I would get was not worth the price. In any case, that didn't detract from the usefulness of the Nuvi for the primary purpose that I purchased it. Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase....more info

  • Unhappy!!!!
It's been like a month and half since i got my:

Garmin n¨¹vi 885T 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with MSN Direct Service

For that much money I paid for it;. I wanted simplicity and effectiviness and easy to use. But when it comes to enter an address you need to changed state, city, town..etc..lots of steps to follow. it's very frustrating. I am constantly driving long distances. 60% of my time is on the road! And sometimes My Garmin nuvi 885T doesn't help me.
So I need manually change settings which sometimes is a very frustrating. The speakers is not that great, bearly hear it; i don't use the bluetooth cos of the poor quality hearing of the speakers. the FM transmiter is usuless. I have a 2008 New Sturn. doens't work with my car I guess!
its been like a month and half, I would love to return it! I paid $550 for it.!! oh well!

  • Solid But Not Perfect
I've had my 885T for about a week and a half. For the most part I like it and it has been useful. It has already made a few trips to unfamiliar spots in the city much less stressful and faster. It has its shortcomings though.

PROS: MSN Traffic service works well in Denver Metro area. Movie times seem accurate (I'm considering paying the one time fee). Slim size. Lane assist blew me away - how cool is that! Has been 99% accurate. Voice commands work really well even in noisy vehicle and allow for safer operation while driving. Voice command remote is unobtrusive and feels sturdy. Easily upload maps to unit directly from Google.

CONS: Suction cup mount falls often even on flat Jeep windshield (I'll end up using the disc sticky mounts). My Samsung Alias phone is not specifically supported for Bluetooth - seriously it's one of the most popular phones. Subsequently bluetooth connectivity has been frustrating and inconsistent. Speakers will probably suffice for a quiet ride but I'm in a Jeep with 32" mudders. FM transmitter (to hear voice prompts over sound system in your car) is worthless. New map update was nearly 2G and took a day and a half to download on DSL.

All in all I expected a little more functional quality for the price but I'd still recommend it to a friend that loves tech stuff but would recommend a cheaper model to someone who just wants a good GPS....more info
  • Where are the POIs???
I preordered this for $700. I have had it a little over a month, and it works great. If you want fun voices and vehicles, Garmin.com has some for free. Now enough with the OK, on to the bad...

The problem is it has almost no points of interest. My cheap 5 year old Garmin has tons of POIs, but this doesn't even have a fraction. Why did I pay all that money for a great GPS if it can't find the places I want to go? I think I will sned it back because great features don't make up for practical functionality....more info
  • Toy With Hours of Enjoyment
I received my new Nuvi on a Friday night so I had the weekend to play with it. What I found was that it had a ton of things on it. The sudoko game kept me busy for hours many, many times. I became addicted.
I found that the screen reacts slowly from time to time - almost like its locking up. Some times, I have to re-start it either by holding the power switch, or removing the battery.
I activated the MSN direct 3 month trial the day after I received the unit. I think this could be an extremely handy tool if you live somewhere that has full capabilities. I live in Canada, so about all it tells me is the weather. I'm hoping to drive south in a few weeks, and then I should know for sure its true capability.
The bluetooth is awesome. It pulls in my contact list from my cell phone, making it much easier to call people, because you can actually read the screen when you're driving.
I also really like the voice activation. It takes some getting used to, and like almost anything with voice activation, it has its bumps. It doesn't pick up your voice as well when you are driving, requiring that you repeat yourself. Part of that, is getting the timing right. You have to wait for the little green icon to come up on the right hand corner. That is when the unit is listening. If the icon is red, it cannot hear you. I get caught on the mis-timing a lot.
I still have trouble finding where everything is because its different from where things were located with my Nuvi 350 that I had. For example, if you want to spell the name of the place you want to go, its on another menu (under points of interest).
One thing I have noticed with its directions, it seems to like to take you on a route whereby the destination is on your right hand side. That route is not neccessarily your most direct route. I think it does that because so many places have the centre curb that doesn't allow you to turn left - especially in The US.
I find that the battery power does not last nearly as long as my 350 did.
All in all, I love this unit and all its capabilities. I am glad I waited til the new model came out.

  • Very Functional
After struggling with Tom Tom units for a few years, I decided to go with a Garmin. The 835T does everything they say it does with varying success.

Voice recognition is good, but not great - There are some words it just can't understand, like Target and Radio Shack.

The processor's a little slow and can cause the unit to crash if you do a search while using the Music Player, or otherwise overload it. It can get tempermental sometimes and crash for no reason.

Navigation is excellent. The routes are quicker than my Tom Tom's and responsive to traffic situations.

The Music Player is very good. The chip requires no special formatting, but the Player still recognizes the album. Fidelity is excellent.

The stock mount is really impressive. The ball and socket joint moves in all directions. The unit securely locks into place easily.

If you need a good GPS, this is a good choice....more info

  • Upgrade in Performance
I am an early adopter. I bought my first GPS, Garmin Quest in 2004. The new nuvi 885T connects to satillies quicker, names steet names as it directs and seems to do all that it claimes. I have two autos, the voice communication is better in my car than in my truck because the truck is very noisey. It is easier to remove and take with you than my old unit. It is a solid design and although a little pricy I am very please with the devise....more info
  • More than I expected
This has been the best GPS unit that I've bought. The best part is the voice activation works every time...No real negatives, except one minor thing it took a long time to update ...more info
  • Works right out of the Box
I bought my Garmin 885t about a month ago and am very pleased with it. I had a Tom Tom One XL but the Garmin seems to have more detailed maps. I use the audio output in my vehicle and it works great. I have to turn the volume all the way up on my stereo and the Garmin, mainly because I listen to radio talk shows on it. The bluetooth works great with my i570 phone and there are many apps on the 885t. This is the only GPS that I could find that has all these features built in. The text-to-speech also works great. Like someone else said in a review, you have to get your timming down and learn when to talk to it. Have not tried lane assist yet but look forward to using it over the summer....more info
  • Easy to use
Best feature is being able to control the functions with a voice command. Would have given it a 5 star rating - if it was less expensive relative to the other Garmin models....more info
  • LOVE IT!!
I recently purchased the Garmin 885t after having owned the Streetpilot C340. I felt that I wanted an upgrade for a couple of reasons. First, I liked the idea of being able to be more "hands-free" if I needed to make changes to my routes while driving and second I was hoping that the blueooth was good enough that I could also use my phone through the Garmin. The purpose would be to streamline what I need to hook up in my car.

I own an iPhone original and have tried a couple of FM transmitters for hands free calling in the car. Though they worked partially with my phone, none were completely compatible. I was so pleased to see how the Garmin immediately recognized my contacts and they are all up on the Garmin screen. Second, even though the iPhone does not support voice dial, I am able to verbally navigate through the Garmin to make calls. This for me is important so I don't have to fiddle with the phone in my car.

After having used the Garmin for a couple of weeks, I can say that I so far am very satisfied. The Garmin's navigation works as expected and as I was accustomed to with my older Garmin. There are many POIs and I am amazed at to what you can find just by saying the place by name (the more popular places). I do appreciate the lane assist feature, which works well in my area. It gives you arrows in the upper left corner telling you the direction of your next turn. Very handy. Be aware, however, that the Junction View does not work with Lane Assist in every area. This is not a problem for me as this is only an "extra whistle" from my perspective.

The voice commands work wonderfully. I am amazed at how well it understands me. This function makes entering information so much easier. I also love how you can use Google Maps to directly send favorite places to the Nuvi, as well.

In regards to the Bluetooth, I find that the Garmin's speakers are better than the nuvi 360 that I tried a year ago. I sent it back because the speaker and sound were awful on it. On the Nuvi 885t, I am able to hear the people speaking well but was told that there was an echo on their end when I spoke. I purchased Garmin's external microphone and people I talk to now say that it sounds much better. I've talked several times on it with no problems.

The FM transmitter works just fine for me, especially if I am just tooling around town. As a matter of fact, I found a station in my area where the music that I downloaded to my Garmin sounds just like I'm listening to the FM radio. No static at all. I like using the FM option because I like having the ability to listen to my callers and Garmin commands through my car stereo. I will admit that when I travel distances, I will probably opt to use my aux. cable with my iPod due to the fact that the FM stations would change frequently on longer trips (which would be a pain).

The suction cup has been great. It hasn't fallen once and I've taken it down a couple of times. If you do have problems, though, put a little moisture on the suction cup and it should stay put!

I haven't had the chance to experience the MSN direct or the picture viewer (doubt I will ever use that) so I can't comment on those features. I would like to add that customer support at Garmin is wonderful. I had to call a few times with questions and they were extremely helpful, kind, and supportive. (My Garmin was originally shipped in the Russian language).

I have been experimenting with this unit and learning how to use the Garmin in the house while I don't have to concentrate on the road. Though it is user friendly, there is still a lot to learn. I also took it with me even if I knew where I was going to "practice" the features. I'd rather get a handle on how to use it when I know my route. As silly as it sounds, it does help!

Kudos to this unit! NO regrets, even though I felt it was more than what I wanted to pay for a GPS....more info
  • 885t problems
I bought the 885t 2 months ago and have returned 2 to Amazon due to defects. The first 885t had problems with the touch screen completely freezing up and I had to take the battery out to get it to restart. The second GPS started shutting down and rebooting on its own on several occasions. With both units, I called Garmin and they confirmed it was a defect in the product. I am very disappointed I got two lemons in a row. Also, I tried using the MSN to find a gas station while on a trip. On two occasions, it directed me to a gas station that didn't exist. At this point, I'm without a GPS and looking at other manufactures....more info
  • Not worth the money!
I purchased this unit thinking I was getting Garmin's flagship GPS. I have had the 885t since it's release in Jan 09, and paid $699.99. At this price you would think the unit would perform flawlessly. Not the case. I believe most of the issues have to do with the updates Garmin forces on you. The unit itself lacks the smoothness of movement the lesser 2x5 series has. The bluetooth is useless. People can't understand a word you say. MSN services don't work as advertised. The doppler radar is hours behind, so you already know what the weather is before the GPS tells you. After several calls to support and countless hours on hold, they finally agreed there was a problem and swapped the unit out. I got the new unit and it is worse than the first one. The replacement resorts back to factory reset everytime you turn it off. The Garmin reliability is a thing of the past, the should think of changing their name to "Garbage". Stay away from this model and save yourself a lot of headaches. I bought a TomTom 740 live this week and love it. More features, easy to update with mapshare, great bluetooth and superb tech support. ...more info
  • First GPS - Very Cool Features
This is my first GPS and its great. Being new to this I don't have any comparative info however a couple pros and cons:

    Pros:
*Lots of POI's (points of interes) preloaded
    *Ability to add custom POI's
*So far, the selection of routes chosen make good sense
*Ability to control unit with speech commands is safer and really awesome.
*Controls are pretty intiutive - easy to navigate through menus
***Although the Garmin website doesn't list it, my Verizon Palm Centro is compatible via the bluetooth (with some limitations - see cons). I used it last night while on a work conference call where I would only need to listen in. I muted myself and then to be able to hear louder than the internal speakers, I took my cassette tape adapter that I use for my own mp3 player and plugged it into to headphone jack on the Nuvi and it worked like a charm!
*The voice recognition is good with some things to be aware of.

    Cons:
*Yes... the speakers are a little weak and for the $$$ they should be louder. I wouldn't choose something else for this reason though.
*The internal microphone is okay but if your listening to music - you're fooling yourself if you think its going to be able to distinguish your voice from the sound from your car stereo. My first bluetooth phone call was very choppy which I was sort of expecting from reading the other reviews so I opted to buy the wired microphone accessory. I found a Clarion unit that someone wrote a review about who had gone from internal mic, to Garmin mic to the Clarion and was now satisified. Hearing that I just skipped the process and went for the Clarion and it is definitely an improvement over the internal mic. Again... I wouldn't expect miracles from it - window down, music playing, etc. even though it does say that its noise cancelling. I called my wife briefly to test it and she said it was cutting me off a little bit but just like any other speaker phone usually does. Basically - its do-able.
**The Garmin website isn't up to date regarding what phones are bluetooth compatible. As I mentioned, my Centro wasn't even listed. It's not very well thought out either. One of the limitations with my Centro is that I can't voice dial my contacts names. The Nuvi does upload my contact list but I have to page through page after page of 4 or 5 names per page to get to what I want because my phone won't bluetooth voice dial. Instead of waiting for the Garmin to receive another voice command I'll probably just reach up and use the touchscreen to page down to my contact and select it. I mentioned the website not being very good for finding compatible phones... It's not very up to date with phones. Each phone you pull up tells 4 or 5 things that you either can or can't do on that phone. The last one was text messages - Cool. It was a pain to go back and forth to try and find phones that have this capability and I eventually gave up. I found it on a blod somewhere online. The list of phones that can do the text messaging (which includes reading text messages to you over the Nuvi) is all a bunch of older phones??? There were a bunch of Sony Ericsson phones listed but I went to Sony's website - and NONE of them were even mentioned on [...]???

I give this thing 4 stars. Yeah there are some shortcomings but for what this thing does - I'm very happy with it. If bluetooth connectivity to your phone is a priority I would research online/call Garmin to see if what you have will work, and to what extent. For me, having to press a couple buttons on the touch screen or wade through the "page down" process to make calls is something I can deal with. Answering and speaking with both hands on the steering wheel while doing my job is fantastic! Being able to do everyting with voice commands is worth the extra $$$.

  • The Best Out There Garmin 885T
Excellent features and very good GPS. It gets a satellite lock inside my house!!! The voice recognition is the gem in this thing. It really works and once you start using it, it is very useful and functional. You don't have to push buttons.

Positives: Voice recognitions, lots of POIs, on-line sites like POI-Factory to add custom POIs (easy to do), and a very good set of features. I have tried (it works) but not extensively used the bluetooth hands free and mp3 player yet (8GB microSD card ordered) but I think it will be useful. MSN Direct is the way to go and works very well. I am getting helpful traffic updates in Louisville.

Negatives: I have to say the volume on the unit should be higher. I realize the FM radio option is there, but sometimes you are listening to the radio or a CD and it is hard to hear the Garmin. On a trip do they expect you to only listen to the Garmin? I figure if I use the mp3 option on an FM channel that maybe that is a way around the CD because I assume it will give voice prompts through the music audio (have not tried). Also the few hands-free calls I have taken have given very poor sound on the Garmin speakers making it not useful (maybe a software update? Not sure they are using the A2DP or a good profile.). They must fixe these two issues. They should already have this perfected. One other small potential issue. The band for the voice recognition button barely fits my steering wheel (last notch), on some others that are larger it could be an issue (but I think this may be minor)?

I will post more as I use it. I should give it 4 starts because of the sound issues. I will come back and re-review as I use it. It is worth buying. My brother and siter have Tom-Tom and another Garmin (780) and this is definitely better. The voice command and satellite lock really distinguishes it. When you are driving you don't want to have to reach and push buttons on it. Garmin, please improve the audio ASAP....more info
