• Creates a phoney notion of balance
  With all its footnotes, this book gives the impression of being hard science (disagree with the author? Then go to the references...). But it is distinctly one-sided in its approach. As other customer reviews here point out, there is lots of science which this book omits.
  
  Arguably, this is a worthy study of the data of scientists' experiences - how some of them have faced serious pressure to alter their views or, worse, abandon their scepticism. But that is a side-show.
  
  The book could have been editted better, too. It looks like it was rushed to the bookshelves.
  
  In summary, there are quite a few better books than this one. If you don't want to believe the hype about global warming, then at least believe the science. And don't believe the hype about this book....more info
• Who pays Chris Horner to spread this stuff?
  If you want to read this book, chances are you already agree with the title and you're just looking to verify that global warming is a "hoax." This book has nothing to do with climate science, and everything to do with deception--not by scientists, but by conservative free-market think tanks. Chris Horner works at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, a think tank that has taken some $2 million in funds from Exxon Mobil since 1998, as well as other petro-money such as Koch Family and Scaife Family foundations, Amoco foundation, Texaco foundation, etc. (according to sourcewatch). So if you think you're getting unbiased information here, think again. There's a vast petro-industry-funded network of think tanks putting out stuff like this. Much of it reads well on the surface, but is full of half-truths, lies, and deception about climate science. Save your money and time, or better yet: spend it on a book that takes a more journalistic approach to reporting the science, such as Spencer Weart's "The Discovery of Global Warming."...more info

• What Debate? Have you heard about any Global Warming Debate??
  When I graduated from Engineering School in 1973, the big headlines at that time were "New Ice Age Coming" (my paraphrasing) with the cold summers we had at the time. And 36 years later, the big headlines have turned to "Global Warming" with predictions of Polar Bear extinction and coastline flooding. Didn't believe the first; having trouble believing the second.
  
  I have heard the Meteorologists on The Weather Channel argue for Global Warming as if it is a confirmed fact. And I have heard a local university Climatologist state that the problem with Global Warming models, when applied to known historical patterns, is that they do not properly predict the weather patterns that happened in those past years.
  
  Mr Gore, when challenged with this dilemma, refuses to address the issue and states the debate is over and everyone is in agreement with his Global Warming conclusions. Okay, when did the real debate happen and who agreed? (Interesting to note that Mr Gore's latest visit to Congress, Spring 2009, was arranged with pre-conditions that not one question could be asked about his positions.)
  
  As an engineer, I have been trained to ask pointed questions and seek logical conclusions. There are too many holes in the Global Warming theory that cannot be (and have not been) explained. RED HOT LIES does an excellent job reviewing some of these holes, explaining the pressure placed on scientists to conform to the Global Warming position, and reveals untruths in Mr Gore's movie.
  
  If you think the government is polarized with red and blue politics, then read the book to see the polarization happening with the scientists studying the Global Warming theory. If the last couple of cold winters has you wondering about Global Warming, then read the book about temperature recording errors. If the Al Gore movie (becoming a school viewing requirement) has your kids intimidated with the predicted results, read the book to help your kids digest the info. Even if you agree with the Global Warming theory, READ THE BOOK (i.e., At least be open to hear both sides of the argument).... JAS...more info
• Green is the New Red??
  This is a book not about the science of global warming but about the tactics of those who support global warming. Not surprisingly, the author is alarmed about some of the tactics used by those who are true believers, but he does little to refute the actual science behind global warming. What is the surprise here given that even Al Gore has admitted to some exaggeration for the purpose of awaking the public to what he sees as an impending global catastrophy. In fact, his movie, An Inconvenient Truth was little more than propaganda given that no counterpoint was provided. He simple said, "the debate is over " and, in effect, you are too stupid to understand the facts and arguments".
  
  In any case, this does not excuse some of the tactics Horner uses in this global warming book. The one that made me turn away was his insistence that temperature measurement gauges used by global warming scientists were often in hot parking lots and sometimes even near heat exhaust pipes or AC exhaust pipes. If this was true temperature would be up 50 degrees a year rather than the 1 degree per century that serious global warming scientists are claiming. In the end his tactics are as bad as theirs, and in the end you won't know which side to believe until you understand the basic facts or lack thereof behind global warming.
  
  I know many good facts and arguments against the theory of man-made global warming :
  
  1) temperature starting going up at the end of the Little Ice Age before carbon based economies.
  
  2) temperature started going up 25,000 years ago after the end of the last major ice age
  
  3) despite massive new amounts of carbon in the atmosphere from population growth, SUV's, China, and India, temperature has gone down over the last 8 years.
  
  4) determining 1/100 of a degree man-made temperature increase per year over a century is nearly impossible given a) temperature normally goes up and down 40 degrees per day in any one spot, b) the sun is a huge variable, c) volcanic and plate activity are huge variables, d) the earth's size, shape, rotation, tides, and orbit are huge variables 5) the earth has normally moved into and out of 5 ice ages over the last 450,000 years and at one point was frozen to the equator 6) human activity is dramaticially changing, and the universe itself is expanding and changing.
  
  If someone can synthesize all that, conclude that temperature is going up at a dangerous rate, and should be reversed at huge expense by further human activity, he is some kind of genius isn't he? I wish I had simple book to reccommend on the actual science of global warming

• A good source of information, but with some problems...
  I'm going to try to give an actual review of the book itself as opposed to just opinion on the topic.
  
  The book is well structured in that it tries to separate the science from the politics. Each chapter can be read on its own since they do not rely heavily upon the previous chapters for a lot of background.
  
  The book appears to have been rushed in an attempt to publish it around election time - perhaps prior to the election although I believe the release date fell after Nov. 4, 2008. In any event, there are some editing errors and bad grammar that could have used a little polishing. While this doesn't detract from the book as a whole, it makes some of the points hard to follow and requires re-reading of the sentences to try to figure out what is actually being said.
  
  The book does a tremendous job at footnoting. If you disagree with what is being said, you can look to where Mr. Horner took his information from. In this regard, this book can serve as reference material in debates about "climate crisis" or whatever term is currently used to describe the phenomenon formerly known as Global Warming.
  
  In closing, I would have rated the book a 5 except for the editing problems mentioned above. The content is deep and obviously well researched. I would highly recommend this book to people interested in knowing why there is controversy with regards to this topic....more info

  Now you have the rest of the story. The science is not settled as Mr. Gore would have you believe. Mr. Horner used a studied, logical approach in answering the claims and scare tactics of those who use only computer models to prove their science. • A Counterbalance to the Global Warming Hysteria
  This book hammers and hammers and hammers some of the ridiculous global warming hysteria promoted by Al Gore, the global warming lobby and the hysterics on the "we're all gonna die" side of the issue. It brings evidence and reason to the thought process. The book is thoroughly footnoted and documented but the author would have been better served by including specifics of the footnotes in his text. Eg, instead of mentioning the prime minister of a certain country, he should have just come out and said the prime minister of the Maldives.
  
  For those of us who are concerned about the global warming hysteria, this book does provide balance and perspective. For those who are sitting on the fence, this is a must read.
  
  This book proves, once again, that we cannot rely on the media, politicians or other nations for balanced perspective on critical world issues.

  My name appears in this book, associated with a contrived "controversy" about a paper that was rejected by Science. Unfortunately Horner fails to mention that the same paper was published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters (Penn and Livingston 2006, v649, L45) and that more recent work has also been published.
  
  I haven't read the book, but with respect to the paragraphs regarding sunspots, Horner is not basing his conclusions on literature and research, rather he is basing it on heresay and innuendo. Horner has not contacted me or my co-author, rather he has based his discussion on what other people have said about our publication... even a lawyer should know better.
  
  One immediately wonders about the other paragraphs in this book.

  Christopher blows the wistle loud and clear with some straight dope. The global warming alarmist activists make Bernie Madoff look like a Saint. Flatly wrong, the unbiased science behind global climate changes has nothing to do with CO2! Imagine having political laws passed based on a pack of lies that will take money from you and your family at a time when the world in in financial meltdown. The scientific evience is very clear on this, global temperature increases proceed higher levels of CO2, not the other way around. Check it out, when temperatures increase, oceans warm and release their stored up CO2. Conversely, when temperatures decrease and the oceans cool they absorb CO2. But what causes the earth temperature fluctuations you ask? This is the best part, it is caused by solar activity variations of our Sun, and where our solar system is in relationship to its position within the Milky Way. When the Sun is very active, larger explosions, it blocks more gamma rays from reaching our atmosphere and ionizing O2 into vapor and forming clouds. When the Sun is less active, more gamma rays reach the planet and form more clouds. More clouds results in a warmer planet which in turn means warmer oceans and in turn the oceans release more CO2. Less clouds, and the planet cools along with the oceans which then absorb CO2. As humans, we produce less CO2 than animals. No, we are not the culprits here. When our solar system was positioned near a spiral arm in our galaxy thousands of years ago, we had the ice age because the spiral arms blocked a massive amount of gamma rays, thus less clouds which in turn lead to a frozen tundra. Note, when the ice age ended it had nothing to do with humans. By the way, Mars has increased and decreased in temperature at the same rates Earth has, ther are no people on Mars. • How politicians and the enviro-industry are manipulating science to gain control over what you hear and read
  If you are anything but a fervent climate change fundamentalist, you should take the time to read this book. The fundamentalist enviros should read this, too, but it won't make any difference to their belief system and just set them to sputtering.
  
  This is not a book that debates the science of global warming, climate change, or whatever the climate marketing folks have decided to call it now to manipulate you. Christopher Horner sets out to show you how the climate alarmists are using the media, government, and your good will to work against your true interests. Personally, I hope you make the time to read this book because I think it will help you understand what is really being put forward in the climate change debate. Basically, the fundamentalists call themselves scientists and create models that demonstrate the weather patterns that support their position and then point to those models as proof enough to shut down debate. When real world measurements do not fit their models, they are adjusted and manipulated; sometimes many years after the fact, to conform more closely with the climate story the alarmists want you to hear.
  
  The eight chapters cover the poor and biased reporting in the media, the alarmist scare tactics used by enviro-activists and what happens when they admit it and realize they have made a mistake by doing so, how the enviro-establisment uses its power to quash debate and punish dissenters, the way the high-priests (and priestesses) of climate change work to suppress free speech including their past remarks, the propaganda being pumped into your children at school instead of real education, how politicians use the climate issue to enhance their power - take more of your money - and erode your freedoms, what the science industry does to manipulate findings to keep their rivers of funding flowing, and how the UN lies about the environment in order to enhance its own power and erode sovereignty.
  
  Of course, you will read personal attacks on the author and reviewers who stand against the climate orthodoxy, but that is SOP. But who does this work for? Most folks have heard enough to know that a vicious slur is not a sound argument and actually indicates that its purveyor is desperate and in the weaker position. I think much of it has to do with the satisfaction they get from the attack itself and the sense of superiority they feel over "them". But it likely varies from one attacker to the next. The point is, when you actually try to have a discussion with most enviros, it soon devolves into their demanding that you see it their way or admit your inferiority as a human being. Not much fun.
  
  But this book is fun and interesting and informative. If you are interested in learning about the way the climate change industry is attempting to manipulate you, this is a book you should read right away.
  
  You might also want to look at Steve Milloy's "Green Hell" and learn more about the political agenda the Greens have to control your life even more.

  Red Hot Lies peels back the politics and far left agenda to reveal just how far the global warming alarmists are willing to go to mislead the public. Their overall goal is to take control of much of the worlds economy and achieve their anti capitalist, anti American agenda.
  For those who are perplexed by the fact that we cannot get a valid forcast of the weather 48 hours from now, yet the Gore-aphiles can tell you with certainty that it will be 1.8 degrees warmer 25 years from now,you will find that the technology for neither is available with certainty.
  This book reveals the degree to which otherwise good and well trained scientists as well as some of the (formerly) prestidgeous institutions are willing to go to forsake the basics of science and truth in exchange for 40 pieces of silver.

  Read it because I promised a colleague I would. Disgusted by the deliberate distortions and selective misreadings on almost every page. • Pooly written, but well referenced
  Way too much work trying to extract out of the text what the author is trying to say. What ever happened to editing ? I write professional reports for a living and have to write plainly enough for the layman to understand, as well as present sufficient data. The trick is to organize your thoughts to allow the reader to get the point and spare them from getting bogged down if they don't care or don't understand the details. This book is written as random thoughts dictated into a recorder as the thoughts popped into his head. You have to read some sentences several times just to back track as to where he started his thought.
  
  Good news is that he is obviuosly plugged in to what is going on among the alarmists and therefore provides insight into how and why we are where we are with the group of people who want us to panic. Also contains a great list of references that will take a year to review if you want to. However, you can probably find a book which is written more clearly....more info
