AT&T Service
This AT&T phone can handle high-speed data connectivity via AT&T's 3G mobile broadband data network, which is available in most major metropolitan areas. The AT&T 3G network uses the dual-band UMTS 850/1900 MHz network, and this phone is also compatible with 2100 MHz 3G networks (found in international territories). The AT&T 3G network provides download speeds ranging from 700 Kbps to 1.7 Mbps, and upload speeds ranging from 500 Kbps to 1.2 Mbps. This makes it possible to enjoy a variety of feature-rich wireless multimedia services, and it gives you the advantage of offering simultaneous voice and data services. (For use outside the United States, an AT&T international data plan is recommended.)

In areas where the 3G network is not available, you'll continue to receive service on the AT&T EDGE network, which offers availability in more than 13,000 US cities and along some 40,000 miles of major highways. Providing average data speeds between 75-135Kbps, it's fast enough to support a wide range of advanced data services, including video and music clips, full picture and video messaging, high-speed color Internet access, and email on the go. You'll also enjoy quad-band GSM connectivity, which allows you to make calls in more than 190 countries and access data applications in the more than 135 countries where AT&T offers international data roaming.

You can take advantage of the AT&T Navigator GPS software and service, a full-featured premium navigation application that includes audible turn-by-turn directions, real-time traffic updates and re-routing options, and 3D moving maps (additional charges applicable). AT&T Navigator offers several other features to make your commute more enjoyable and reliable, including mobile access to Yellowpages.com. Additionally, AT&T Navigator is the only mobile phone-based GPS service that provides integrated speech recognition for address entry and points of interest search.

The tri-band 3G Blackberry Bold also offers integrated Wi-Fi networking and GPS for turn-by-turn directions as well as a 2-megapixel camera/camcorder.
With 3G connectivity, you'll be able to access AT&T's Cellular Video (CV) service and the Internet while on the go. Cellular Video features content from CNN, The Weather Channel, iFilm, Comedy Central and exclusive premium content from HBO and much more. And you get access to AT&T Mobile Music, which enables you to buy tracks while on the, access the Napster and eMusic subscription music services, stream music video, discover what's playing with Music ID song-recognition software, and find out what's hot with The Buzz music news portal. (A MEdia Max subscription bundle is recommended for accessing AT&T's Internet, video, and music services.)

The phone has a built-in web browser for MEdia Net downloads and mobile web browsing. AT&T's MEdia Net service enables you to receive and send emails, read news headlines, get weather updates, download games and ringtones, and more.

Phone Features
The elegant BlackBerry Bold smartphone features a lustrous black exterior, satin chrome-finished frame and stylish, leatherette backplate with a newly designed full QWERTY keyboard for exceptionally fast and easy typing and stunning half-VGA (480 x 320 at 217 ppi) color display that's fused to the undersurface of the lens, making images leap out with stunning definition and clarity. Make meeting requests, invite new attendees and more, all on your Blackberry Bold. Users without BlackBerry Enterprise Server support can manually sync with their desktop calendars and contacts via Bluetooth or USB using the included BlackBerry Desktop Software.

You'll enjoy enhanced Internet browsing on the Blackberry Bold. The trackball mimics a mouse, making it easy to navigate sites in Page View or Column View or to zoom in on specific parts of a web page, while various emulation settings allow you to choose between the full desktop-style HTML content and layout or the mobile version. Attachments can also now be downloaded from within the browser and there is support for watching streaming videos (RTSP, real-time streaming protocol).

Customer Reviews:

  • Great Tool with Sync Issues (with a Mac)
I chose to get the Bold when it first came out in early November instead of the iPhone because of the keyboard and the excellent reviews on its email capability - use it to keep in touch with my patients. After using it for a month, I have become absolutely dependent on it. The phones reception is EXCELLENT - much better than my previous Nokia cell phone. The navigation is simple and intuitive. Email is flawless. Having all of my calendar and address book information on hand is incredibly helpful. I also use it as a replacement for my iPod to listen to Podcasts - I have not touched the iPod I used daily in weeks now. I would not want an iPhone because of the keyboard being on the screen and no cut and paste. I have not a drop of remorse over my choice - as a matter of fact, one of my friends has dumped his iPhone for a Blackberry.

I give the Bold 4 stars because I have had problems with syncing the Bold to my Mac. I decided to use Missing Sync for $40 because the reviews on PocketMac (free) were terrible. Syncing contacts, notes, and music can be a little tricky. The Missing Sync developers are working on a resolution for these problems. In the mean time, in order to keep all of these syncs working properly, I have to avoid updating contacts on the Bold, sync the programs in Missing Sync one at a time, and manually drag podcasts and music to the Bold when it is connected to my Mac, (otherwise the podcasts are not uploaded).

As long as I do this, the Bold works GREAT. If I don't, contacts and notes become unreliable and data on my Mac can be lost (thank you Time Machine for preserving my important data). In order to regain stability with this data, I have to wipe the Bold and start anew with Missing Sync following the protocol detailed above.

By the way, I spent a day syncing MobileMe to Outlook on my PC and then using the Blackberry Desktop Manager software to sync contacts and calendar data. It was even less reliable, but I don't know if that was due to the Bold being messed up from the effects of Missing Sync. I also tried PocketMac, but had similar issues that were only resolved by wiping the Bold and syncing anew as detailed above and not inputting contact data on the Bold.

Summary: The bold is excellent - can't work without it, but syncing is touchy. I look forward to these issues being resolved and enjoying flawless syncronization like my colleagues with Macs and older BlackBerry products....more info
  • features abound for serious users
If touch screens are not important to you, which i pesonally dont see the point, then the bold has everything else one needs. i use it primarily for work purposes with my works blackberry enterprise and it has been a blessing. emails, to do lists, appointments, even comes pre loaded with an office document reader to keep up with excel word and powerpoint files. a nice perk is that it supports wifi and automatically switches to it when a program can use it.
for phone calls themselves the voice quality is great, i love adding short cuts to all the letters on the keyboard which makes for easy fast dialing.

u can have different email addresses, get tons of apps like yahoo messanger caller id etc.

as a music player it also works great, added a 16gb card to it and so it can store alot of things. for video i was amazed at how nice it looks, with the att cellular video feature there is tons of content you can stream and it looks just like it would on a nice tv at home.

for music the speakers on the phone itself are surprisingly loud and clear. for the car i bought an fm transmitter to play music in the car and its on par with my ipod. a nice extra perk i hadnt thought about and found out when i plugged in the fm transmitter is that if you put a call on speaker with the fm transmitter the phone transfers the person you are talking to to your car speakers so its a nice handsfree tool.

only con i can think of is that if u have wifi and bluetooth the battery does drain and you need to charge it at least once a day with normal talking time.

if you are someone interested in web browsing then this phones is not for you because the browser is not good at all other than for simple things like reading news etc, but its no way close to safari. so if your getting this phone for that then go with the iphone if you want a productivity tool that can also do good things with music and streaming video then you cant go wrong with this phone. ...more info
  • Bold is a great product but was brought to market before it was ready for its customer base.
I am a big fan of the Bold's features over all previous Blackberry models. My disappointment in the product is that the battery life is inadequate for a road warrior. (and i don't even have the wi-fi fired up on it.) If you use it aggressively for travel, you will need to power it up toward the end of the day. Secondly, the device tends to reset itself or lock up several times a week. It usually requires one battery pop out per day on average to get it unfrozen or to have the software reset so that it can figure out who it is. While i would recommend the product to others, i would tell them to delay as long as possible so that Blackberry can fix the hardware, software and battery life issues in future models....more info
  • Bad Bold
I am on AT&T and recently had upgraded to the Bold through AT&T. I had the unit for almost two weeks and it went back. First off, it kept dropping calls every call. The reception signal was all over the map. I couldn't even make a simple call on the Bold. The software was very buggy on mine. It rebooted on it's own after a crash and, when it booted back up, all my mail folders were gone along with numerous other things that either stopped working or ceased to function.

THe trackball ceased to scroll up and would only go down as well. Then, I would click on an icon and it would open something else. I had to remove the battery and hard reset the Bold many times. Sometimes, it would not reset either. All the Mail icons and folders were still missing despite the hard reset. Multiple hard resets were needed to get all back to operational state.

I liked the GUI and the ease of use but, the unit I had was a pile of junk. I now have a Nokia E71-2 and, aside from the better screen on the Bold, the Nokia blows away the Bold for reception, signal strength, audio clarity of cell calls and battery life. I get ten hours on one charge on the E71-2 whereas, I was lucky to have two to three hours on the Bold that I had. The battery life on the Bold was really bad. I couldn't believe it drained out in a matter of a few hours just sitting idle. Aside from 5 30 min phone calls, five or so MMS, ten SMS, few pics and it was dead.

Now, I did indeed go back to AT&T to get a replacement and found the second one to be defective as well. I tried the second Bold from AT&T for a while outside the store in my vehicle and it too was hosed up. We loaded a new SIM into it and up pops the SOS indicator. Reboot and we see Invalid SIM erros. I backed out on the deal and got my money back and went with the E71-2 and am very satisfied with the device as it WORKS right out of the box.

If two units were defective like that, that's not saying much about the quality of RIM products. The unit does not feel solid either like the Nokia as it's all lightweight cheap plastic including that faux chrome trim. That too is cheap plastic. I accidentally dropped mine when getting out of my truck onto dirt and it scratched badly from just one three-foot drop onto hard dirt.

I did however, like the GUI, the trackball, and the BB email software. It works very good. The screen was amazing for sure and the keyboard was excellent as well. It's just too bad the units I tried didn't work. Seems like all AT&T units had issues vs. the ones sold on Amazon. At least, this was the trend I was seeing on the AT&T forums. Perhaps there's different makes just like Nokias- some are made in Finland and some in Taiwan. THe Nokia that I have was bought unlocked and is all metal and made in Finland. The one that is rumored to be going to AT&T is all plastic and is not the same as the one I have and who knows where that one is MFD. However, the Nokia uses a different name for it: E71X. So, I don't know what is going on with the AT&T Bold units but, I can honestly tell you that two units that I had did not did not function as was intended. ...more info
  • iPhone shopping- look here first
I have a yahoo, gmail, and one or two other email accounts that are regularly accessed. Don't do much with instant messaging.

All Blackberry devices handle all mail (and phone calls and SMS) into a single messagebox- easy to see what's come in and has/hasn't been handled.

Things the Blackberry does that the iPhone doesn't do:

    - ability to copy/cut/paste text

    - multiple email account centralization

    - stereo bluetooth support

    - recording videos

    - removable storage & swapping batteries

    - multiple carriers (ATT, Verizon, TMobile)

If you have a single email account and aren't a 'power email' person the iPhone could work out OK.

Until then it's time to Be Bold :)

I could see the iPhone being preferable if the owner is browsing the web heavily and watching video, photos, and audio....more info
  • An Amazing product
I have years working with Blackberry. As an IT Manager and Blackberry Enterprise Server administration I had gained lot of experience with Blackberry equipments.

    Cons:

    - Low photo camera quality: I don't like the photo quality results.
    - Low video camera quality: video quality is poor in video camera.
    - Size: is bigger than curve
    - Batt time: 3g and wiFi drain batt time like crazy

    Pros:

    - 3G speed: enterprise activation, email, sms, browsing, etc are high speed now thanks to 3g technology.
    - Menu speed: thanks to the new OS and the cpu speed, the menus and response of the unit is superb
    - external SD memory card size allowed: you can add 32gb of sd card externaly without need to open the batt cover. with 32GB you have enough space for a lot of videos, mp3, photos and docs
    - Wi-Fi: you can connect to your company, home or hotel wifi without issues. include some tcp tools like ping, etc
    - Bluetooth: good for headphones, address book transfer and sync with your car bluetooth system. you can even dial to anyone in your addressbook from your car by say the name if you car support the feature
    - Tethered Modem: this is a nice feature. in an easy way you can connect your laptop or pc to internet using 3g speed and your provider. I even connect my laptop in the highway in emergencies to internet at good speed. you need a data plan from your provider (i recommend and unlimited one)
    - Level 2 device: this is the first time you can use phone and receive emails at the same time. older bb versions don't allow that. now you can use the device as tethered modem and still receive phone calls. very important feature.
    - BES security: there is nothing compare to BES security. Blackberry is the top notch security and mobile email provider in the world. no iPaq, iphone, palm can compare with BB solution. From the BES server I can lock, kill or locate Blackberry devices when stolen, etc
    - Qwerty keyboard: i love the BB keyboard and the full qwerty with good response
    - GPS: I do not use too much the gps functionality in the BB but works great with BB maps and Google maps.
    - Video screen quality: video screen quality is amazing, the unit I have come with some demos and is a real HD video. now the BB have half VGA screen but the colors and sharpness are amazing.
    - Audio quality: if you connect your BB to your home theather you will hear full digital 20hz-20Khz audio quality.
    - iTunes sync: you can sync your itunes library with BB (i never tested this feature)
    - Bluetooth tathered: you can use the thatered modem option without wires, using bluetooth. Tested!!
    - light flash for photo and video: the flash can be used for taking photos and for videos.

This is a real good unit. another bad thing is this is expensive, but with a data plan you can save your money.

    HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

  • Ultimate Smart Phone
This is the first smart phone and Blackberry I have ever owned. I am very pleased with it. Have had it for a month now. It does just about everything you would a smart phone to do. I was really close to getting an iPhone, but, there were a few things that iPhone just couldnt offer no matter what the 3.0 software adds to it in june of 2009. The iPhone doesnt have removable and upgradable memory or battery. The Blackberry Bold accepts memory cards as high as 32GB. The 32GB memory card isnt available yet but once it is it will be supported by the Blackberry Bold. You can also buy additional and extended batteries for the Bold. So if you run out of juice or the battery life is dead completely you have a back up. Where as with the iPhone you have to send it off to Apple and get them to replace your battery and do without your phone while they fix the battery. Another main plus for me since I live in cold a climate like Canaada is that fact that the touch screen cant be used with gloves on. You have to either get special gloves or take off your gloves whenever you need to use the phone. The main difference between the iPhone and the Blackberry Bold would the qwerty keyboard. Its so much easier to type witha qwerty keyboard. I have a iPod touch and I find it much harder to type on it than my Blackberry Bold. The Bold also allows many applications to run at the same time in the background. This is not the case with the iPhone. Although maybe the 3.0 software will finally allow this. The list goes on and on with the features the Blackberry Bold has over the iPhone. Copy and paste, push noticfications, video recorder, flash camera, mms, teathering, blue file transfer, etc... If you do a lot of typing and messaging like texts, emails and instant messaging then the Blackberry Bold is smart phone for you. The Blackberry bold also has a very loud and good quality speaker for phone calls and also for media funcitons like listening to music or watching videos. The main thing about the Bold is that your not confined to certain rules or certain apps like you are with the iPhone. Apple seems to lock a lot features on their devices and end up charging you later to unlock these features or upgrades. For example with the Blackberry Bold you can use any web browser that is compatible with it. I am able to use opera mini or bolt and there is skyfire which is in beta testing right now which is suppose to be better and will also flash media. In terms of media functions the Blackberry Bold is very versatile. It plays many difffernt media formats. The screen is 2.8 inches and is 480 x 320 in resolution which is the same resolution as the iPhone. The videos look very well on the bold not to mention the sound quality with either the speaker or headphones. You can use any headhphones you want with it. It also comes with a noise reducing headset which allows you to listen to music and also make calls. The Bold has a nice 2 megapixel camera with flash and video capture. Takes decent pictures not as good as my stand alone digital camera but very good for a smart phone. The flash is a nice added feature. Although the Bold is great all around smart phone there some features I wish it had or had better. A larger 3.0 screen would have been idea in addition to a 3 megapixel camera. I also wish it had better battery life. The talk time is about 4.5 to 5 hours. I end up charging it about every other day. Something around 6 hour talk time would have been ideal for me. In addition I do wish the Bold offered more memory for apps. Out of the 128MB of memory only half is used for applicaitons. This is probably my main grip about the Bold. The iPhone does win in this department. The iPhone has a much larger amount of memory of apps. On my iPod touch I have over 1GB of memory being used for apps. Also I do like the safari browser much better than the blackberry browser on the bold. For videos and music I still also prefer my iPod touch over my Blackberry Bold. The iPhone also has much more selection in terms of apps and games. I have to admit a lot of them are garbage. Also the apple app store has been around longer than the Blackberry app world. There are fewer free apps on the blackberry app world than on Apple app store. Many of the blackberry apps do offer a free trial for a week or a month though. The iPhone also has a larger screen (3.5 inches)....more info
  • Blackberry has lost its edge.
I've been upgrading my blackberries regularly for several years. The Bold is the end of the road. This phone (its category would be more aptly named Dumbphone) locks-up at least once a day. When locked up it is often impossible to answer incoming calls - let alone place new ones. Java applications will make it virtually unusable. The available knowledge base on the web seems to simply ignore this problem which is experienced by several unfortunate friends. Googling the error messages will bring up similar questions and no answers. Initial reviews of the new Storm confirm this is not a fluke - RIM has started on the road to oblivion....more info
  • Blackberry Bold 9000 - Poor synchronization with Outlook
This is a great phone, but synchronization with Microsoft Outlook is very slow and cumbersome. It takes me about 30-45 minutes to synchronize my data, versus 60-90 seconds with my Palm Treo. Also, the synchronization line by line match is only about 95% accurate. Several fields just don't match up....more info
  • BlackBerry Bold
As compared to the Curve I had before, I like the vivid screen and the slightly larger key sizes.

Have had a couple of intermitent glitches where the Trackball would not scroll up....more info
  • I like it...
First off, let me say that one of the most important feature of a cell phone to me is the keyboard. This is my second Blackberry other than the PEarl. I returned the Pearl because the keyboard was impossible to get used to. I hate auto text! I considered the Storm because I am fascinated by touch screen phones but I was also aware of what a pain touchscreen phones can be when it comes to keyboards. I swore off the Iphone because the keyboard was a complete disaster! I check out the Bold and I loved the sleekness of it and the 3g. I didn't like the $400 price even with a new plan with AT&T but luckily I found Amazon's muche more reasonable price of $250 with a $100 rebate. I must say...I like it. It's a user friendly phone but don't expect it to do magic tricks. IT's kind of a simple phone with a modern makeover. The keyboard is just how I like it but it's also the easiest keyboard I have ever had on a cell phone. It also has leather on the back of it so you never have to worry about scratches when you place them on surfaces. I am not a business type person, but I like to have access to mail accounts and I know several people with blackberrys to take advantage of the Blackberry messengar. Also, there are a ton of webistes and forums for blackberry users where you can download free wallpapers, themes and ringtones. I'm glad I got the Bold instead of the Storm because just as I predicted, there are a lot of complaints about the Storm's keyboard....more info
  • Easy, smooth and smart
This is my first Blackberry but second phone/personal orgainizer. The Bold is easy to learn, the e-mail sets up quickly and without much fuss and works flawlessly. I'm on an "edge" network but internet access is quick and my battery life is two days between charges. I've had the phone for just over 30 days and would buy it again....more info
  • Great Phone - Few Things Need to Improve
I have been a BlackBerry user for quite a few years now and I have to say, this is addictive to any one that has it. Being that we are in a technologically advance world, this phone will keep you connected at all times in any part of the world.

    Downside -
    1. The BlackBerry battery lifetime for a day is poor, especially if you are writing e-mails or texting all day.
    2. The speaker is not as loud as the 8800 phone which makes it difficult to hear on a laud environment (Airports, Restaurants, Coffee Shops...ect).
    3. Camera is ok, could be better.

I have not tried many other features but for now this will do. Everyone will have their own stories and this is my story....I hope it helps.

  • Complete disappointment
My Blackberry Bold is headed for the junk drawer...or the nearest brick wall. The battery life is terrible, and even without talking on the phone, I have to recharge mine 2-3 times a day. The Bold's software glitches sometimes make me wonder if I perhaps accidently bought mine from a joke shop. The thing is constantly rebooting.

And dont get me started about the cost of roaming. The damn thing eats megabytes by the dozen everyday, even when you are not surfing. Music sounds great, but try getting the music onto the Blackberry. Sure, possible, but not so easy. I have owned a Blackberry for years. The Bold is a complete disappointment....more info
  • Blackberry is Great. Buying from Amazon, not so much.
I support many Blackberries at my company and bought this one. I love the Blackberry. The screen is fantastic, the sound is excellent and the operating system is a well-needed upgrade over the 8800 I had before.

The problem I have is that the mute/standby button on the top is stuck. AT&T says I have to go through Amazon since it's within my first 30 days and Amazon is giving me a hard time. I called up three times and got hung up on twice with third time someone finally admitting to me that they're having phone problems and to call back later. I call back and am told because AMAZON added an address in my address book with my middle initial when I got an Amazon card to buy something totally different and I removed that duplicate listing, even though I didn't use the listing I removed and have the exact address in my address book that the phone was shipped to, I have to do a return and can't do an exchange. This will take about two weeks to process. I email in twice with the same results. I suspect inept customer service reps but apparently finding a good one in the cell service department is impossible.

I am extremely disappointed in Amazon's customer service. I only seem to have problems with them when buying cell service. Maybe I should finally give up since their cell service department's customer service seems to be lacking....more info
  • When it's working...it's a dynamic device
The bold is a dynamic device when it's working!
My first bold had a battery latch issue and it constantly leaked application memory. My 2nd bold's battery would get hot and then reboot itself.
My 3rd bold's battery would get hot and leak app memory. So in 1 month I had 3 bolds!!!
I then found out that I should update the os on the device. I don't know why att nor rim wouldn't send out the devices with updated software or allow an ota software update; I guess that would require too much thought. I then found out that the only way I could update the os is on a pc, because pocket mac won't allow the device to be updated. After I updated the os I still found my battery getting hot so I returned the phone and purchased a curve. Hopefully I won't have the same bad experience.

The drawbacks are the insufficient battery power, and the old buggy os that the device ships with! I's still a far better functioning phone than the iphone though....more info
  • Good Buy!
I've upgraded from an Nokia N95 to the Blackberry bold and i've got to say that it was a great upgrade. The only complaints I have is the speaker and the browser. The speaker is kind of low in volume but when turned high there is to much bass. For a phone with to much bass it does not sound really good but overall it is a great buy and I would buy it again. I just submitted my rebate and hopefully I will get my rebate soon....more info
