Customer Reviews:

  • A must have for your baby's room
We first started out with a cheap model that had lots of interference. This one was a heaven sent. No interference at all or none that we've noticed. The base unit has a lot of great features that I find very useful. It gets cold here in NY so letting me know the temperature of the baby's room on the parental unit was a great additional feature. The base also plays lullabies and has a night light although you cannot shut it off from the parental unit but have to do it manually. The unit has great sensivity control and volume also works great.

I would have given it 5 stars but the LED screen doesn't work too well on my unit. Besides that it's a great buy....more info
  • Long range and noise free
My review title really says it all. This is a noise free handset and it works from anywhere on our two acres.

With that being said it has some other great features which we didn't even realize we needed until we had them. The best feature in my opinion is the ability to use the handset like an intercom to wherever the baby monitor is. It comes through crystal clear and is perfect for calming our baby until we can get into the room, or for other things such as telling my wife I am enroute with a bottle of warm milk during a particularly cranky night.

On top of those great features it has a built in nightlight, a temperature gauge (which reports on the handset) and a built in lullaby selection.

Admittedly the lullaby aspect could've been done a bit better. If the volume is set anywhere but very low, a few of the lullaby's low notes will shake the unit and it makes a rather harsh noise. Luckily ours is close to the bed allowing for use at low volumes. Other people may not be so lucky. But then again, if you are like us you probably have 3 other things that play lullabies anyway.

Would I recommend this to a friend? Definitely. The ability to sit and watch a movie without the terrible white noise of a lower frequency unit is worth the cost of this item alone. Add in the other goodies and we have got ourselves a great monitor which will hopefully last through our next child and beyond. ...more info
  • A Nice Monitor
After previously having the Sony Baby Call monitor - BABY CALL,900Mhz,27CHNLS which I thought was pretty good, I like the Philips Avent monitor much better. The one thing that stands out most is the audio clarity of this monitor, it is outstanding. Compared to the analog technology of the Sony Baby Call which always seemed to have a little bit of background noise no matter what, the digital signal on the Avent is crystal clear. Though the Avent will occassionally present some sort of clicking interference at times which does not last for long, and usually goes away if the parent unit is moved somewhere else. Although the volume on the parent unit is very acceptable, I just wish it went a tad louder than it does, just for a little more headroom on the high end.

The parent unit on the Avent is great, it fits nicely in your hand, has a belt clip, and also a neck strap. No matter how you wish to transport it, Philips makes it easy for you. The range is excellent too, I am able to pick up the signal anywhere in the house, and outside in the yard too. There is a link light on the front which turns green which the link is active (initially the display also indicates it is linked as well), and turns red and blinks when the link is not active (someone turns off the baby unit) or you are out of range of the baby unit. When you are out of range the unit alerts you with 3 beeps about every 10 seconds ( and the display indicates "Not Linked") until the link is re-established.

The large LCD screen has a blue "Indiglo" type backlight which I find very hard to read when it is on at any angle. My first thought is is click on the menu button and change the contrast for the screen, however there is none. Luckily the light goes off after a few seconds and you can read it with available room light without an issue. The 5 brilliant blue LED's across the top act as a sound level meter when they light up - a very nice feature and the blue color is a real attention getter from anywhere within an eye's glance. Once the unit is operational the temperature in the room where the baby unit is shows up on the LCD screen. I guess this feature is handy if the house temperature fluctuates or the baby is sensitive to the temperature. I found that it generally read about 4-5 degrees above the thermostat in the same room. The volume is controlled by the "+" and "-" buttons on the parent unit. You also use these buttons to adjust the sensitivity from the unit's menu, where you can also set the unit to alert you when the baby makes noise if wish to turn the volume all the way down. The menu also enables you to set a temperature range where you can program a minimum and maximum setting and the unit alerts you when it falls out of these parameters. This is not something I would use much, but some people might. The parent unit also allows for two way communication to the baby unit. There is a push to talk button on the left side of the parent unit, so you can communicate to the baby or anyone else in the room where the baby is. I find this handy when the baby is getting changed and I wish not to be in the room.

The baby unit is a pleasant looking triangular design with five buttons near the top to adjust the loudspeaker on the unit for the two -way communication and the lullaby function, as well a button to page the parent unit if it lost. The play/stop button turns the lullaby on the baby unit on or off and plays continuously until you turn it off. When a lullaby is played, the parent unit shows a music note symbol on it as well as the lullaby number that is currently playing (1-5). The problem is you also hear the music in the parent unit, which gets annoyingly repetitive. Once the baby is asleep you really want to turn the lullaby function off. This is something that the parent unit lacks, a way to remotely turn off the music. You have to walk back to the baby unit and hit the stop button - risking awakening the baby. I find this as a major design flaw in the unit. I would much rather have had a way to shut off the lullaby function than to display what number lullaby was playing - I mean I can "hear" which one is on, I would rather switch it off. The baby unit also have a warm soothing little night light on it which only turns on and off from the base, yet there is an indicator on the LCD screen to let you know it is turned on.

Overall I am very happy with this unit, the design is slick, and the performance is excellent. It runs circles around the Sony I had as far as clarity and range and the Avent has virtually no interference, unlike the Sony. I guess that is the nature of analog and digital technology though, and you get what you pay for, so this unit should be interference free. If you are looking for a good unit, consider picking this one up....more info
  • Philips Baby Monitor
The Philips monitor has some good characteristics and some mediocre ones:

The night light is a good addition to the monitor. I found the light to be adequate and not too bright. This monitor also offers music. I like the musical selections but the sound quality is only so so.

The idea of giving me the temperature in the baby room is great. However, when I had the parent unit with me in the kitchen while I was baking, it kept warning me of the temperature in the baby's room. Is it giving me the temp for the baby room or the temp for the room I'm in? It flashed 80o repeatedly but the baby's room was actually rather cool. And am I missing something or shouldn't there be a sound alert that goes with this warning?

This is a decent baby monitor, but it's not really for me and my baby. She's usually very quiet when she wakes. She almost never cries which makes a monitor without video practically useless for us. ...more info
  • Great monitor
Exactly what a monitor should be very clear, no fuzzy interference even when on our 900 MHZ cordless phones or around our wireless router. We tried another video monitor that had lots of interference and wasn't reliable for this one and are totally pleased. A couple of things I was hoping it did do that it did not were, have the ability to turn the lullaby feature on and off from the parent remote and same for the night light. The parent remote is very small as is the base unit and can be placed pretty neatly in the babies room without really noticing it. Tested it outside as well and works great there to, you could literally hear baby breathing with this monitor and I love the sound indicator lights so you can have the volume down and still see if there are any sounds in the babies room. Great product!! Also the temperature reading has been spot on with our home digital thermostats so far. Forgot to mention the talk back feature on this is also great. Nice to be able to have two way communication with the baby's room....more info
  • Clearer than other monitors, but questionable screen quality
One of the sure gifts that new parents receive is a baby monitor. These items are essential, especially for new parents, so that they can monitor their child from another room. Even as the children get older, it's handy to be able to monitor coughs and breathing on nights when they're not feeling well.

In my experience, the two most important things in a baby monitor is the ability to see when there is activity coming across the monitor and the ability to hear the sound clearly.

Our previous baby monitor had a row of soft red LED's across the top that would show the presence and volume of the sound coming across. This was helpful when watching TV in another room, since sounds would show up on the LED's alerting you to something going on. The longer the row of LED's, the louder the cry.

This baby monitor also has a row of LED's on the remote unit and they work in the same manner. Unfortunately, they are very intense, which can make it difficult to have on your bedside table at night if there are any sounds in the other room that would trigger one or more of the LED's.

Sound quality is very good. The adjustable sensitivity almost makes you think that it's not working, because you're not used to baby monitors not having a noise level at all times. I did feel as though I heard every sound I was supposed to, but I think that further experimentation would result in the right balance between silence and sounds.

The MIDI-like music that the base unit plays is simplistic, but it's always good to have something else in the arsenal of tools to soothe a cranky child trying to get to sleep. It would be nice to have a way of turning off the music from the remote unit, but it's not a huge deal.

This unit also has an LCD display on the remote which shows the temperature of the room where the base unit resides. The temperature in my testing was within a few degrees of actual, so I could see that it might be marginally useful. However, the display on the remote has such low contrast that the backlight drowns out the readability of the numbers on the display.

The two-way "walkie-talkie" communication feature is another interesting add-on, but its usefulness may be limited. While my pre-schooler found it amusing, I would think that a younger child would get spooked by their parent's voice coming from the dresser or shelf.

Overall, I was very happy with the core functions of this baby monitor. I would suggest that the LED's be dimmed (or a different color be used) and that the display be enhanced to make it more readable. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a new baby monitor....more info
  • Nice mid-price range monitor
This is a solid, high quality monitor. It's sleek and easy to use but the main thing is the crispness of the sound and the sensitivity of the transmitter. I can hear all of my baby's movements very clearly. I live in NYC and with our old monitor we'd occasionally pick up the movements inside a neighbor's house (which of course made me wonder what others were hearing!) But with this monitor I haven't had any interference. I have to admit I wasn't interested in the temperature feature much, but it seems like a nice bonus feature. However, being in NYC with some recent chilly nights, it's nice to keep an eye on how cold the room gets. But I would think if you live in a temperature controlled home or if the baby's room is near your room, then most likely the temperature would be similar as the parent's room and not much of a concern. But again, it's nice to have it vs. not having it. It would be nice to be able to turn off the music from the parental unit-if baby falls asleep you want to click off the music from whichever room you are in. Yet, it's not a deal breaker. I like the intercom function from the parental unit, which is helpful to talk to baby or parent in the room. Both our less expensive model as well as our other very expensive model didn't have this. Overall, I would say this is a good monitor-I think the main selling point is the quality of the sound that's transmitted and its sensitivity-that's really what you hope for in a monitor, isn't it? ...more info
  • Crystal clear sound, great product!
Love this monitor. It's SOO clear. No interference, and we've got lots of electronics in our house, including digital phones, wireless routers, etc. Parent unit seems to hold a charge for quite a long time. Plus, I like being able to check the temperature in our baby's room. I'd absolutely recommend this monitor to anyone whose expecting a child. ...more info

I got this to actually hear what my elderly parents are doing...if they fall, need me, got hurt, etc. Works very well and not bad looking either. It has made life a little easier for us all thanks....more info
  • Monitors have come a long way...
This is nothing like the monitors I used with my first baby. It is very sensitive and has cool features like volume sensitivity, talk back capability and even moniters room temperature. couldn't ask more from a monitor. ...more info
  • Big Price and Great Quality
First I would like to say that times have certainly changed. When my oldest was a baby (1995) the best monitors were ridden with static and not very sensitive. This model however, provides incredible sound quality with ZERO static or interference. I have a two story house with a full basement and this monitor provided crystal clear sound even across three floors of the house. I also have two different cordless phone systems and a wireless-B network, and none of that interfered with this monitor at all.

For me, 99% of the value of an item like this lies in its clarity and performance (which as I mentioned are excellent). The added features like built-in music, intercom feature, etc are simply icing on the cake.

This is a pricey item but the performance justifies the hype and the cost.

  • excellent monitor
Way above the rest. Great quality, easy to install and use. I like the fact that it tells you the temp in the room. Perfect monitor, I would highly recommend....more info
  • Fantastic!
I must say this product is top notch. We are amazed at the optional it comes with (3 different Lullabies, temperature notification etc...). Most importantly it work perfectly as a monitor as it only transmits when there is sound in the room, getting rido of any static noise. Highly recommended! The only reason I don't give it full stars is that it does not have an option for Celsius temperature reading and only come in Fahrenheit and living abroad we have to calculate the temperature....more info
  • Monitor sound plus temperature -- great device!!
This baby monitor combines a sound monitor, intercom, thermometer (!!!), night light and lullaby machine.

It was relatively easy to setup.

The base unit is relatively small. It has a probe for the thermometer function sticking out of the back. The rechargeable receiver is about the size of a closed flip phone. It comes with a belt clip and a neck strap.

Our base unit is about 70 feet from where we keep the receiver unit.

The sound is crystal clear. There is absolutely no interference going either direction. Our old Fisher Price receiver had to be put up high, turned 35.2671 degrees from the wall, while you hopped up and down on one foot, wearing an aluminum foil hat, while plugging it in or we'd get a lot of static.

The base unit is so sensitive I can almost tell when my 3-year-old daughter is quietly doing something she shouldn't be doing. When the volume is turned down, there are a series of small blue lights that light up showing the volume of noise in the room. Not nearly as obtrusive as the obnoxious red "rainbow" on our old baby monitor. Much easier to live with in an adult bedroom.

The receiver has a readout of the temperature near the base unit. This is a really helpful feature for me because my daughter's room is on the southern side of the house. It is never the same temperature as the rest of the house. That is a wonderful feature I would have loved to have when I bought my first baby monitor these three years ago. I think that combined with just the baby monitor function is worth the price of this unit.

I haven't had much call to use the lullaby or the night light. But I think it would be great for those who are still dealing with the 2 a.m. feeding routine.

So far, my daughter has been most impressed with the intercom function. Or as I like to call it -- the "voice of God" feature. After going night-night, daughter was lying on her toddler bed kicking the wall. I chimed in on the intercom and it stopped immediately. I could almost hear her jaw drop. I love that this neat monitor will help grow the idea in her mind that Mama is all-knowing. (Well, for maybe another 6 months at least.) ...more info
  • Not Just for Babies
This is a great unit for babies, but it has multiple other uses. In my case, I thought it might provide an essential communications link and monitor for an elderly person confined to one room. Indeed, under such circumstances it proved excellent. I am able to hear the person quite easily and convey that I am on my way there or slightly delayed, find out what they need, and bring it without making multiple trips, and just keep in touch to dispell loneliness.

Even the music and night light give comfort not just to babies.

My favorite feature is that the "parental" unit is easy to carry around.

    Highly recommended!

  • Despite drawbacks, I wouldn't give it up now
If you, as a parent, suffer from the same delusional obsessions I do about whether my sleeping baby is safe, snug, too hot, too cold, breathing okay, etc then this will be the best $100 you will ever spend. Oh sure, the LED screen isn't perfect (I've seen few that are), and the parental control isn't as loud as it could be, but once I really got the functionality of this Philips set, I would not give it up.

There is nothing like waking up in the middle of a chilly night and being able to assure myself my sleeping angel is doing just that, comfortably. Or sitting on the couch at night and being able to let her know I'm coming when she starts to cry (in a calming voice, not having to holler across the house). None of which is to say I'm not a sucker and don't go check all the time anyway (she's my baby, after all), but this unit gives a line of communication that makes me realize how much I miss it anytime I'm without (say, when I forget to charge the parental unit, for instance).

There are several other reviews here on the technical imperfections of this set, and I won't deny there's some legitimacy to the claims. But I say that with this caveat: it is ALWAYS the case with innovative technology that something could be tweaked here or there. I will tell you as a dad, for the additional security and peace of mind it brings, this little system is well worth the price. ...more info
  • Finally!
I hated my old monitor (which was not a cheap one) because of the static, muffled sounds, and general inability to keep a signal from the babies room to my bedroom. Many a night as it beeped at me I wanted to throw the thing out the window.

I gave in and decided to spend some real money and hoped that my frustrations would be solved. And, they are!

I waited for the new Avent monitor after reading the mixed reviews about the old one and I am very glad I did. The big issue that people had on the old model was that the unit was not loud enough. Parents complained that at full volume they still couldn't hear if their kid was still breathing. That problem has been solved. I have no problem hearing every breath. You can control the sensitivity of the parent's unit - so it can be on all the time, or if it quiets down, you don't hear a single noise out of the unit. No static, no beeping, no hum from the cordless phone - pure brilliant silence.

My child is older now, so I have the sensitivity low enough that unless she starts crying I won't hear her. If she turns over in the bed, I hear nothing. But, when I have another baby I am sure I will crank it all the way up to hear every little breath.

The unit allows me to talk to the babies room - which I thought was a bit silly. But, I don't use the function to talk to the kid (she is still confused as to why she hears her dad's voice from the bookshelf) - I use it to talk to my wife. "Do you know where the clean socks are?" - "yes- in the bottom drawer" - and I never left the master bedroom to help!

It has a music feature (which you can't control from the parent's unit). A night light feature (which isn't really bright enough to be of use). And it has a page function if you lose the parent's unit.

Long story short, great unit - worth the $. If you want to actually enjoy the baby monitor experience - this is the one for you. I can finally sleep in peace....more info
  • Not worth the money
We just had our second child so it was time for another monitor. Our original monitor is a video camera that has a fair amount of interference so I really wanted to avoid something that could have similar issues. The Philips DECT technology does eliminate interference that the other monitor constantly picks up. In exchange for that however you get a monitor that doesn't really work like you may need one to. At the highest volume setting on the parent unit the noises coming from our daughters room are barely audible, certainly not loud enough to wake an adult from a deep sleep. The temperature reading on the parent unit are at least 4 degrees higher than the room itself. The design is nice, the charging unit seems to do it's job effectively but as a baby monitor this unit is a failure....more info
  • Should've bought this in the first place
When my first son was born, we got one of those cheap baby monitors.
They worked fine... sometimes... This was a few years ago (my oldest is now 3 and the youngest, 1). We had constant interference from my neighbor's monitors. They had the same cheap model. Also, the fact that it used the same spectrum as my cordless phone, it made my wife curse me a few times during these past years.

Once we got this Philips monitor, I felt like she had forgiven me for all my sins. Even the ones I committed before I met her.
Not only is the sound quality much much crispier, but it also allows us to talk back to my kids ("Stop singing and go to sleep!"), plays songs (though you can't control the songs through the control, has a temperature monitor and also alerts you when the temperature goes below or a above the limit you set.

The only cons I would say are that the menu isn't the most intuitive thing around and that you can't control the songs playback using the control.

But it's still a solid product that I wish I had bought instead of the cheaper alternative....more info
  • Good Baby Monitor, but previous model better
For a baby monitor - this is a really good option. This is very similar to the first DECT monitor by Phillips (the yellowish/orange one). The previous model had a worthless star pattern that really didn't light up anything. Looked good on paper - but that was it. This model has a semi-functional night light (although it is pretty poor). But - be careful because there is some research that correlates nightlights and nearsightedness. Maybe that is why they make them so dim ...

Sound clarity is outstanding and the temp option is a must. One other bummer - this unit does not display the temp on the base like the first model. Be careful where you place the little temp probe in the back. If it sits on the dresser - it will read the surface temp of the dresser. Try to get it out and up to read the room temp.

I used this as a walkie talkie with my wife when she recovered from a c-section. The talk back function on the parent unit is very useful and makes the back and forth possible. So it can be used as a general communication option too.

Good product that was made a little better with the speaker clarity improved (louder and clearer) versus the older model, but the older model worked well too. In all honesty, if you can find the older model, it may be just as good a choice, if not better (and cheaper). The display on this new model is not as easy to read (actually it is really bad, compared to the older model). The new display is hard to read and will require a tilt (and some squinting) to the handheld to read it on occasion.

Both models have lullaby options that are hard to master with the handheld unit - but work great on the base.

Overall, if you want a clear, no interference, baby monitor that actually allows you to hear what is going on (instead of trying to guess through static), then this monitor should work very well for you. It has great range and the clarity is outstanding.

But - get the older model if you can find it. It is much easier to read and has the temp display on the base - not just on the handheld.

  • Lightyears ahead of previous products and other brands ...

Finally ... I don't have to listen to the aliens from M. Knight Shyamalan's `Signs' every night as I listen to my son sleeping peacefully in the other room. My other monitor used to pick up phone calls from the neighborhood. Those days - or nights, rather - are over.

I can also hear my wife clearly as she whispers a request for a bottle of milk, a diaper or something else.

Having used two other brands of baby monitors and was never happy and always searching for a new spot to plug in the satellite monitor, because the battery setting was just `too annoying', I'm incredibly happy, rested and at ease in the evenings.

The new DECT technology completely eliminates ALL static and makes the sound monitoring like nothing you've heard before. While the volume is a bit low, I can hear just fine and don't need or want to blast it. Speaking in a normal voice is very clearly heard and yelling is something that you'll probably experience - once.

I'll be honest and tell you that I didn't really give a hoot about the temperature reading as it was a bit vague and I already knew what the temperature was in the room as we're all being cooled by the same central air unit. Living in the low desert, we have to run the AC almost all year and both my wife and I are always acutely aware of how hot or how cold it is. I know the temp is supposed to be around the baby, but the monitor and the temp combo is not a substitute for a parent, just a subtle reminder.

I also wish I could control the music from the satellite unit, but alas it's a minor thing.

Fantastic baby monitor worth keeping around for the next one.

  • No static, I'll give it that
I'll start by saying that maybe this unit is a dud?

    Postive:
RANGE: is fine, clear, no problems there. I was able to go outside and at 100 yards still ok. The base is inside the house, and the house has alum. siding.

TALK BACK: the ability to talk from the parent unit to the base is nice and works ok. My daughter thought it was nice that daddy could talk to her from the other room.

    Not so good:
    1) Volume: With the volume full up on the parent unit and the sensitivity at max, still could not hear my daughter over the TV that was in our room. The TV was at a low level, my wife and I could talk back and forth from 6 feet away, at a normal volume. The parent unit was just not loud enough. I don't have to hear my child breath, but if I wanted to, this unit would not do it either.

    2) Display:
Reads easy in full light, but in a dimly lit room or dark, the blue back light comes on and washes the display out, can't read it. The unit needs a contrast button or something?

    3) Temp reading:
Off by about 6 degrees, on the high side. I really don't care it's just a reading and I could learn what is normal. (Had three therms in the room, same table, the base said 77, the other two therms 69 and 71)

    4) AC/DC adapter, I noticed while putting together that the plug, to plug into the Base and Parent charger base, are different. Not sure what the point is since the output of the transformers are identical? I just figure why complicate things if you don't need to, use the same plug on both.

Overall the range is great and I'm almost tempted to keep it just because of that, I hate monitors that drop and get static. However since the volume is not loud enough it's going back. I could live with reasons 2,3,4, but I have to be able to hear it.

Maybe the unit I have is not quite right? I'm replacing a 2.5 year old Graco Digital Deluxe Baby Monitor, that used to work well, but not locking on the base like it used to. It has two parent units, which is nice, but they have been dropped so many times I think they are shot. As far as comparing the current Graco to the Philips: Philips is better in range and signal lock. The Graco is better on volume and sensitivity. I'll probably just replace the Graco with the same model again and see how that goes.

  • Did what we wanted it to do
My sister just had a baby so we picked this up for her and she and her husband love it

Does just what its supposed to do, lets them check on the baby from the other room, you can hear everything just fine, no interferance or problems at all that I could tell when i babysat

Some people on here were complaining about the color of the screen being different or something like that, but honestly I don't notice that kind of thing so I couldn't say if it was or wasn't. The monitor works, that's all i care about

If you're looking for a baby monitor and don't mind paying a little more for a good one, you might check this one out...more info
