Customer Reviews:

  • Greatest I have ever owned.
Worked right out of the box. No problems of any kind. Loaded the software without incident. The machine did self checking and waited for me to print. My documents are clean and clear. I like HP and the price on Jan 2009 was about, with COSTCO instant rebate, ~$120 plus tax. I added an extra black ink cartridge for a total of $210.
The bonuses were: two sided printing and wireless connection....more info
  • Good printer but bad software installation
It will take forever to install the driver come with the printer. And it's out of date as well. Just download the new driver online, everything will be much easier.
However, the printer works really good, it's really an ink saver, scan and copy also perfect for small business uses....more info
  • Not for photos
I was very disappointed with performance at this price level. It is loud and takes too long to start up. Document print quality is good but the photo quality is very bad. Pictures smug no matter what paper is used. ...more info
  • Great for small home office!
We produce around 20-30 documents per day and the HP7590 has been up to the task so far. The fax interface works well with our existing phone line. The inkjet produces beautiful color docs and copies without the high cost of laser. We decided to scrap our previous laser printer due to the black band of toner on documents, toner dust, and high cost of replacement drums.

If you are looking for an excellent, smart all in one for the home office, go with this one - we love ours!

Other reviews complained about the long driver install time, but the instructions advise you of this - just be patient - its only about 15 minutes and worth it once your all set....more info
  • Great Printer
Bought this to replace my scanner and printer. Works well, makes great double sided document prints (saves paper). It is a network device so all my computers can/do use it for scanning and printing and no one computer has to be on for it to work. ...more info
  • Worst printer ever

  • Good Printer, Save $100 and buy at Costco
I saw this printer at Staples for $299 and then again at Costco 2 days later for $189. The initial setup takes forever around 30 minutes. **Warning** if you have the new Internet Explorer 8 beta version you will not be able to install the HP software. Once I uninstalled IE8, I had no problems other than taking 30 minutes. This printer has 6 cartridges. Yes, you read that right 6! There are two inside, one color and one black. Then there are 4 outside. Cyan, Yellow, Magenta, and Black. When I saw the price of the cartridges, I just hope that I don't have to replace these very often. They are a expensive separately or $46 if you buy the three colors together. So far no problems. I connected using a LAN cable. Couldn't figure out how to do wireless. I think you need a printer server which is between $70-$189.

Before this I had the HP 7310 for a year and a half until a little 5 cent plastic wheel broke inside making the entire printer worthless. It worked great and the ink lasted forever. I went through about 60 lbs of paper with only one cartridge change. Hopefully this new L7590 does the same.

  • Hands down the worst printer I've ever owned
Read Bill Lawnboy's review, pretty much sums it up.

I've owned HP printers for nearly 20 years and have been overall happy (my 6110 was dynamite), but hands down this 7590 is the worst POS of anything I've ever experienced. I'd give it 0 stars if I could.

I bought the unit in Nov 2008, and have had constant print quality problems. 90% of the time its terrible, lines through the images and printheads arbitraily going bad. REPLACED THE UNIT, same problems. Replaced the print heads, problem comes back. Replaced with "genuine HP ink cartridges", same issue except the ink runs out faster than the third-party cartridges.

Speaking of which, HP tries not to honor their warranty if you use another vendor for the ink. Scream, loudly; it's the only way to get the India team to make right, and they will if you scream loud enough. I've also battled with them that they need to do change me to a different model that works, but that seems to go nowhere.

Support is friendly but near useless, as more or less their only troubleshooting technique is "clean the printheads" then "align the printheads", for hours on end.

It's clear HP de-engineered to get recurring revenue from printheads along with ink, which is why these printheads are a constant problem. The unit itself is inexpensive (I got mine online brand new for $140, shipped), but at $25-$30 a printhead, this gets mighty expensive quick. When the stars are aligned just right it does print well and fast, but it seems whenever you run down one of the inks (whether an HP ink or not) you have problems with the printheads.

It's so bad I'm not even going to sell mine, I'm going to GIVE IT AWAY on Craigslist, with the full warning I wrote here. I want people to know what this company is doing....more info
  • Not for Vista
I have the Vista problem with another HP printer. I checked this printer to see if it would work. Direct from HP's website, "With Windows Vista(R), some features may not be available". What good is a printer that can duplex, or scan, if those features won't work with your opperating system. If youare running XP, it is fine, but if you are running Vista, it is not worth it....more info
  • Great printer, especially for the price.
I have been buying printers since 96 and they have all been HP. This is the 6th HP, number 5 was not that good, but I thought I would give HP another chance. I am glad that I gave them another chance, this printer is better than any inkjet I have ever seen. It prints photos super quick and I can print a large document double sided very fast. The ADF is also great, it can scan double sided. The ADF is not that quick, but I do not scan or copy that much. I scanned a double sided 25 page document and it took about 5 min. The paper tray holds half of a ream of paper, so I do have to keep putting paper in the tray. The print heads are easy to change and they should last about 4k pages. The ink is suppost to have a large page count, but I will have to wait and see.

For $150 from Staples ($199-$50 for old printer) this is an excellent buy. If you are thinking about buying a new printer this is the best deal right now. ...more info
  • Very Happy
This was an easy transaction - great deal! LOVE the machine! It is awesome. I have never been happier with a printer! Thank you!...more info
  • Good product in theory... too bad it doesn't work!
Not only is the software full of bugs that cause the scanner not to work, it freezes up anything else I may have running (on a new Dell with XP, not an old computer) and basically renders my home office useless. Per usual, the feeder cannot manage more than one page at a time, that is if you can get the scanner to work in the first place. Tech support in India has taken 6 frustrating hours out of my life to no avail and I'm about to return the product through the front window of Office Max where I purchased it since they say it is my problem for not returning it in the first 14 days. Beware! Try the scan function and feeder as soon as you get it or you may be left with a $300 paper weight and months of home office downtime like me....more info
  • Unreliable
When it works, it's a great machine but this is my second one and both of them seem to think some ink cartridges are empty when they are full and I've had to waste a LOT of money replacing cartridges. After arguing with HP for over 6 months (who insisted on continuing to make me try the same "fixes" over and over that never worked), I was asked to send 4 cartridges (that my printer was saying were empty and they sent me 4 new ones. One important fact is that the guy in the office next to mine has the exact same printer and the cartridges my machine said were empty worked fine in his machine so it is not the cartridges. Due to the fact this has happened to over 12 cartridges over the course of 1 year, I cannot recommend this machine. ...more info
  • Avoid this Product at All Costs
After spending over 6 hours trying to get the software working on two different computers without any luck, I am returning my day older printer and avoiding buying any HP printer in the future. This is the second time I've tried to buy an HP all-in-one networked printer, and both times the included software (and updated version on HP's website) has failed to correctly install. Lesson learned: HP may make good printers, but they cannot produce software.

My recommendation is to avoid this printer at all costs if you plan on using it over a network....more info
  • printer rating
this printer does all it said it would do. The color is good and the speed is good. The only thing I would like to have seen was a little less ink on the page(picture will have enough ink to curl the paper) and it is very noisy. overall happy....more info

I am completely satisfied with our new HP Officejet Pro L7590 All in One. It does a wonderful job of printing, scanning and copying. • HP L7590 Review
Have used HP for many years, tried others, only to go back to HP! I absolutely love the quality and ease of use with this printer. Thank you for giving the public such an excellent price on a great piece of office equipment....that I use at home. I LOVE IT!!...more info
  • Poor Quality Printer
We've had this for three months and we can no longer print anything as it completely jams the paper. I'm required to use HP products at work and all I can say is this is typical of HP. They simply make cheap products that do not work for long periods of time. Look for another brand when buying an All In One Printer. ...more info
  • Works fine until....
I've had this printer two months. It worked great and was really convenient as a network printer and copier for the home. Then white streaks started to appear on the output. By following the recommended procedures in the help manuals and from the online HP help, I purchased another printhead and went through 70% of the ink cartridge content in trying to remove the streaks, but still they are present. I've spent over $200 in materials on a printer under warranty, and it still doesn't work. Other HP printers I've had were really dependable - this one is a huge disappointment....more info
  • HP Software Install Nightmare
I attempted to install the software both from the accompanying disk & from the HP website, but was unsuccessful. Later, I attempted a second install from the software from the HP website, but failed again. Three separate HP tech support folks attempted to install it also - both from the web and from the disc. Not only did they all fail, but it seemed as if they kept no record of what the previous tech rep had attempted to do to fix the problem. Calls to customer service were tedious and time consuming. All told, I've spent about 10 hours with this problem and still don't have the printer working. In particular, after all this frustration, a call to customer service was greeted with attitude and abruptness. The rep simply didn't understand that I was struggling with a software install issue and not (I think) a bad unit. I'm on the verge of returning the unit and never buying another HP product again....more info
  • PLEASE READ THIS FIRST PLEASE
Better CHECK OUT all the forums before you spend money on this printer. The software works only in a SMALL PERCENT of Vista installations, and HP ignores it. Google: No HP Devices have been detected OR HP Solution Centre will close now OR Printer Software Installation Stalls or Stops OR No Scan Options Refer to device documentations. Press OK' It will lead you down a path of sapping your time while HP sells more and more. You may think it will be just fine on you computer, because if it works on any it must work. NOT TRUE. IT ONLY WORKS IN CERTAIN CASES, NONE OF WHICH ARE NORMAL. The machine is fine, good even. THE SOFTWARE IS NOT NOT. SO IF YOU INTEND TO USE IT WITH YOUR COMPUTER, WELCOME TO THE CROWD OF PEOPLE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO MAKE WHAT THEY SOLD US WORK....more info
  • nothing but trouble
After my recent experience with the HP 7590 All-in-One printer, I am not only replacing it with a different printer, but with a different brand. The short version of my printer woes is that I purchased the printer in August - and three months and three replacements later, I'm packing it up and returning it to Staples (who, unlike HP customer service, will just let me return it and replace it with a new printer). The series of printers/replacements worked for a total of 16 days - printed about 50 pages, and required a full set of replacement ink just to complete trouble shooting.
The long version is: The original quit working after two weeks (of limited home/business use). I went through 3 hours of online troubleshooting before the technician gave up and said they would send me a replacement. The replacement arrived - it was a refurbished printer, and I had to dismantle the original (remove ink cartridges, printheads, duplexer, front panel) and reconstruct the replacement - plus box up the original computer and take it to a FedEx location for return shipment. The 1st replacement lasted two days - and then gave me a new and different error message. So I repeated the process - 3 hours of tech support, followed by an offer of replacement, arrival of refurbished printer (take apart/reassemble/box and return/). The second replacement gave me a third set of error messages right from the start. I attempted to circumvent the online tech support, but found no other way to contact HP (I tried phone support, but was routed and re-routed through an infinite loop, and gave up after 45 minutes). When I initiated the online chat with tech support, I started off with the whole sad story of my printers, and how I really didn't want to go through another 3 hour process - I just wanted to send this one back and get a refund. Of course, that wasn't possible. Not only that, but the printer was now giving an error message that ink was low (between the 3 printers I had printed less than 50 actual pages, plus all the trouble shooting pages). The tech insisted that I change ink cartridges - at which I balked, knowing that it wouldn't fix the printer. However, at his insistence I put in $70 worth of replacement ink. The original error message appeared and he said something like, "Oh - so now we can send you a replacement printer." He reassured me repeatedly that "next printer will be perfect" but I badgered him into sending my case to a "higher power."
After about 10 days I got a letter and an e-mail from HP saying that the case manager had attempted to contact me, but had been unable to reach me. He had not called during the times I gave HP as convenient for me ( a three day period during which I stayed by the phone) - and he had not left a phone message. I replied to the e-mail with no response. I didn't reply to the phone message for more than a week, since my experience is that it takes about half a day of availability to deal with HP. The case had been closed because of my failure to respond!
Moral of the story: Avoid buying HP products in general, and the Officejet Pro 7590 in particular!...more info
  • Disappointed - Former HP Printer Fan
I was gung ho on HP printers. Currently own 2 high volume HP color laser printers. My older HP All-in-one is a refurbished unit purchased ~8years ago and worked great up until a month ago. I wanted another all-in-one before my older unit broke down so I bought the HP Pro 7590 six months ago. I liked the fact it does 2-sided printing, uses individual color ink cartridges, does legal size paper. Three months old, paper jammed and in the process of un-jamming, the print head messed. Was able to fix it for the most part. Print head messed up again a month later. Fixed it. Two months later, messed up again. (Costs $50+ dollars for a new print head.) Also goes through ink quickly. With all the printers I own, I didn't use this one much, and 1/3 of the time I've own this, it's been turned off because of the print head problem. The black ink has been replaced twice with an X-Large size cartridge. Now it's kaput. Guess it's time to try out other brands. The HP laser printers work great, but toner cost is formidable. Tired of paying $$$ for ink/toner. Disappointed big time with this 7590. The software that comes with this has bugs. (I'm running Windows XP.) That's another reason to switch to another vendor....more info
  • seems to work fine if one is patient with the setup
I have had the HP L7590 for several weeks, and I thought I would add my experience and advice to the other views expressed here.

First, please understand that I am using the machine on a small LAN which has wired and wireless PCs, all running Windows XP. So I cannot comment on Vista or Linux, or Mac.

Second, ignore the CD-ROM that came inside the box, since it has a version number which seems older than the driver software available at the HP web site. Locate the up-to-date software [version 8.0.2, September 2008] online at HP.com, and download that 311-megabyte file to your hard drive or a USB drive.

Third, prepare an entire French Press of fresh coffee.

Fourth, follow the setup instructions inside the box, and re-read them twice to make sure that I\you have not missed any step. On the third reading, I found two more strips of tape on or inside the unit that I had somehow missed.
You should allow at least half an hour for the mechanical steps -- unpacking, plugging in to power and the LAN, installing the printheads and the ink.

Choose a good location for the machine. Specifically, make sure that you have adequate clearance to lift up the cover all the way, and adequate clearance to pull out the tray that catches the paper. Assume that you will eventually use legal size as well as regular size paper.
At first, I placed it too close to a door, and the first person who tried to close the door would have snapped off the output tray.

Go get a sticky label and write these words in some brightly colored ink: "Do not put ANYTHING on top of this machine". Make a couple of those labels and put them on and near the machine. The first person who puts a heavy book on top will destroy the feed tray.

Just when you think it is all done pumping the ink and making noises, you are probably making the wrong assumption. Do not push any buttons at that time. Go make a few phone calls, and have another cup of coffee.

Fifth, choose a PC on the LAN that won't be in use for an hour or so. Use that PC to install the software that was downloaded. You should set aside at least 20-30 minutes for this step.
Just when you think it is all done with the software installation and the printer has stopped making noises, you are probably making the wrong assumption. Do not push any buttons at that time. Go away and have another cup of coffee.

Sixth, come back and reboot the PC that you were using. Once you see the normal desktop, go away and chat with someone for a few minutes. Assume that some invisible but vital installation work is taking place on the PC.
After you return, if all is quiet on the PC and the printer, reboot again to be sure. Then click on Start > HP > HP Update and let it update whatever seems necessary. Once that is done, get another cup of coffee and reboot.

Now, you should have an new icon in the system tray, called "HP digital imaging monitor"; if you double click on that, it will open the "HP Solution Center", which is the software that provides access to scanning, faxing, OCR, and printing functions.

The bottom left button within the Solution Center is marked "Settings" and that is where you may go to mess around with the defaults.
Personally, I thought it was easiest to set everything up by using that software, rather than pushing lots of buttons to go through lots of menus on the control panel of the L7590. However, if you are familiar with those menus from your old HP AIO, those buttons work just fine.

Seventh, you have had enough coffee. Try to be patient. Go to the next PC on your LAN, and repeat everything you did before to install the software and get HP Solution Center going on that computer.

Overall, the machine has handled everything that I have asked it to do so far. I have printed, scanned, faxed (inbound and outbound), and copied in B&W and color. There may be functions I have not tried yet, but all the important ones have been exercised.
It is noisy when printing but silent in between jobs.
It works fast enough for our small office, and I predict that we will see some decline in use of the old Laserjet 4+ that is still on the LAN.

I recognize that plastic parts have unfortunately replaced metal on most products these days. So I handle the equipment accordingly, and hope that by avoiding rough use I may delay breaking something.

Like many others, I really do long for the good old days of well-designed and well-built machines. My LJ4+ is made mostly from parts, but even the plastic parts are reasonably sturdy. Only the toner cartridges have been replaced, as needed, and it works just as well today as it did ten years ago.

After reading the other reviews here, and reflecting on my experience with the HP L7590, I DO recommend this printer. I expect that if it is installed with patience and handled with care, it will be fine for almost any small office. Of course, Your Mileage May Vary.

Update: Still working just fine for faxing, scanning, and printing after six weeks of medium-duty use.

  • Big Hunk of Expensive Junk
There are so many things wrong with this all-in-one that I don't know where to start. Mine is only about 6 months old. Temperamental... lights flash saying to turn off then on again.... over and over and over. I followed the steps on website support, no good... called support, spent alot of time on the phone with someone I could barely understand (she couldn't understand me either) and was eventually told that she could not help me anyway. The print quality was okay the few times it did work, I cannot use it at all now. I'll never buy HP again.

  • HP L7590 Printer/Copier/Scanner/FAX with Intel Mac OS X
I also bought this HP L7590 OfficeJet Pro All In One Printer at a big box office supply store for $199. The printer took the reported 20 minutes to initialize. I downloaded the drivers from the HP site with no problem. The printer initially wouldn't respond to the setup because I had it plugged into a hub instead of directly to the iMac USB ports. All operations except FAX, which I don't intend to use and didn't test, work fine. I printed a color .jpg file, scanned & printed a b&w print, then scanned a text document, all with very good results.
The instruction manual covers only the set up of the machine, with but nothing about the process of scanning, loading photo print paper, etc. I haven't needed tech support, so I can't evaluate that....more info
  • Another Loyal Customer Says Goodbye. Result of the Poor Quality and Dimished Support from the once Great Hewlett Packard Corp.
Sadly, I too have purchased my Last HP Product. An IT Director for 20+ years I had an unwavering belief in the HP Gold Standard. Since my manufacturing classes in College, HP was the model of excellence any company should strive for and could achieve by example. This belief has been common among my industry constituents.

The past few years have been very trying with design flaws and outsourcing support to ill trained questionably sentient drones whom have never even seen or used the product they are supposedly supporting.

My list of "Shame on you HP's" has grown to a point of dysfunction I can no longer overlook. So I agree with the legions of others whom have come to this same point of frustration and disappointment.

  • No problems with Vista.
I just got this today so I can't speak for the long term but....I unpacked it and set it up including the 20 minute initialization that others have mentioned. I went ahead and installed the software on my computer while the printer was doing that. I haven't had a single issue so far. I normally hate consolidated devices because they never seem as good as the individual devices they replace and if one part of it becomes obsolete you have to replace the whole thing. After upgrading to Vista I had to buy Vuescan to make my current scanner work and Vuescan is an awesome program and I could scan through that but my scanner still didn't show up as a normal scanner under Vista so whenever I was trying to use the scanner through other programs I couldn't. I also had issues getting my current HP laster printer to work with Vista. After some creative driver installation I was able to get it to work but it was not stable. Finally I hated trying to send faxes through the computer. Seems like I would end up wasting at least a half hour and even then it would sometimes result in failure. So since I wanted to replace all these devices at the same time I decided to go ahead and try one of these all in one printers. So far I think it is really cool. I tried the auto sheet feeder with a document that had been folded in an envelope and it worked great. It will be great for scanning and copying multi page documents. You can also scan legal size documents with the sheet feeder which is another cool thing I couldn't do easily with my flat bed. On top of that it will also automaticly scan both sides of a document. The printer software is also really feature rich. It automatically setup up the fax for me and set the clock using my computer clock. It asked me if I had a dedicated fax line and if I had an answering machine etc and set all the right settings for me so I can automatically receive faxes without messing with my voice calls. One thing I think is really neat that none of my other scanner software had is you can stick in a few photos on the flatbed scanner and it will automatically detect them and save them in individual files. A big time saver when scanning those shoe boxes of photos. You can also save scanned documents as PDFs which is really cool. I haven't bought a new scanner in a while so maybe most new ones have all this stuff but I thought it was all really cool. It has a ton of other features that I didn't mention also. The double sided printing is cool too. Great for saving paper when printing out web pages etc for temporary use or printing out something to put together in a book. It does pause 10 seconds between sides to let the ink dry so it wouldn't be practical for high volume work. I haven't printed on special paper but the color prints of some web pages look really nice. The pictures look good too. Obviously not photo quality but I wasn't expecting that from this printer and I have a dedicated photo printer for that. Also my prints so far were just in standard mode. There is also a higher quality mode as well as a draft mode to save time and ink. The ink cartridges are really easy to replace with them being located right in the front behind a flip down panel. As others have mentioned it is not the quietest printer in the world but that is not a concern of mine for a printer whatsoever. So far I really like this printer's print quality, performance, features, software and driver features and the setup was problem free. Having the control panel so you can just make a quick copy, scan or fax without messing with the computer is also another plus of the all in one printers....more info
  • L7590 will not work on Vista 64-bit on my HP desktop
The L7590 will not work on Vista 64-bit on my HP desktop (A6720F). From almost all applications (including printing a test page!) it prints part of the first page and then hesitates briefly, and then spits out up to 10 more pages with a line or two of garbage characters at the top, all the while making USB connect/disconnect noises. I even bought a powered USB hub and high-quality, short cable...no luck.

It works great on my XP machine, however.

HP tech chat didn't help...the usual uninstall/reinstall (which I had already done). The guy did try, though. Note that reviewers on other sites (e.g., Best Buy) have noted the exact same behavior....more info
  • So far, so good....
So far, this printer has been exactly what I was looking for. I downloaded the newest software from HP's website, hooked the printer up to my router with a CAT5 cable, and installed the software on both of my computers (running XP Professional). The software immediately found and installed the printer, and all functions have worked flawlessly on both computers.

I haven't had it long enough to know if I will have problems with the printheads like some have said, but for now, it's exactly what I was looking for: A network capable AIO machine with great quality prints at laser-like cost.

I purchased a 3-year extended warranty from Square-Trade for $14, just in case. Hopefully, I won't need to use it....more info
  • l7555 beware
This printer has been a nightmare. I have worked on it for 4 hours. I have spent 2 hours online chat with a tech who at first acted like a robot and finally after I asked him if he was human started answering my questions instead of going down some troubleshooting tree.

He was patient with me but I was not so nice after the two hours and at least 10 tests. I actually went through a whole yellow cartridge trying to print the results. I must have gone through 40 sheets of paper. He actually at one point asked me if I had some more cartridges. It is a brand new printer!! He even asked me to do a test for which there wasn't a menu for it on the printer.
I finally just said thanks for your time [...] I hoped that by paying more for a office printer I would maybe get something more durable. This really rattles my confidence in HP.

  • Good multi-function machine
HP L7590 OfficeJet Pro All In One Printer

I have had several HP All In One products over the years and this is clearly the best and the least expensive - as it goes with technology. The one improvement I'd like to see is for them to make it a bit quieter. I really like having three separate cartridges for color as I always felt that I used more blue and ran out before fully using the other colors in a multi-color cartridge....more info
  • Nice high volume printer.
This is my third HP All-In-One Officejet printer. The first was the r80xi, the second the 6110. I had not been particularly enthused about the HP 6110, which after 5 years broke down with constant jamming. Every other brand that I looked at, however, also seemed to have their own flaws and potential reliability problems, and so I decided to stick with the HP series, mainly because the cartridges are so readily available at Costco. I have not had good luck with remanufactured ink cartridges. I strongly considered the Canon Pixma printers since a lot of people seemed to like them, but the constant complaint that the Canon printers are designed to not print when a single ink color runs low stopped me. HP has not done this with their printers in the past, although I have not tested this yet on this printer.

The printer that I actually have is the HP L7555, which I purchased from Costco. From the specifications, the L7555 is the same printer as the L7590. HP has historically given large volume discounts to sell printers at Costco and then re-named the discounted printers sold at Costco (e.g. the r80 became the r80xi) so as to appease its other retailers. The L7555/L7590 come with the optional two-sided printing attachment, which is not included with the L7580. All three of these printers have wired network capability only (wireless is an optional accessory).

I would note that there are multiple separate listings on Amazon.com right now for the L7680 and L7780, and the photos and specs are quite confusing as to what the differences are, but it appears that these other models come with wireless networking, two sided printing, additional paper trays, and other features like Direct Digital Filing, etc. The L7600 and L7700 series come with legal size scanner glass instead of the letter/A4 size scanner glass for the L7500 series and so have a slightly larger upper body frame (legal size scanning/faxing on the L7500 series is done by feeding through the ADF). The L7780 has a color display instead of a black and white LCD display.

I use this printer as a common family/home office printer/scanner for four home computers. So some of the complaints of other people in the many printer reviews on Amazon.com don't apply to me. The computers all run Windows XP, and so Vista or Mac compatibility are not issues (drivers for Vista and Mac OS are included).

Initially, I set this printer up with my old USB 4-port switch (I have four computers at home on a home network). The L7590/7555 did not recognize the USB 1.0 switch that I had been using, so I got a new 4-port USB 2.0 switch (software switchable), which did work to switch printing and scanning between the computers. The only problem was that the computer that was "on" with the printer would freeze up during the boot process unless the USB port was unplugged or shut off.

So, I decided to put this Ethernet-capable printer on my home network. To do this, I had to expand beyond the four-port MN-100 router that I had. I got a D-Link DGL-4100 4-port gigabit router and DGS-2205 5-port switch. These hooked up easily with the Ethernet port on the L7590/7555. You have to put the HP setup CD back into every single computer on the network and re-install this printer for the network again even though the drivers have been loaded for the USB connection.

I am not using this printer to print high quality photos, although the three color cartridge system does look capable of doing decent photo color printing similar to previous Officejets.

Unlike the previous Officejets, this one comes with two replaceable inkjet heads. Previously, HP had built the inkjet heads into the disposable ink cartridges, which undoubtedly increased the cost of the cartridges. However, it is not entirely clear how long these replaceable printheads are designed to last. A search of the Internet suggested that the HP printheads are not designed to last for the life of the printer as the Canon printheads are, and possibly last only for every tenth ink cartridge or so. Stay tuned for an update on this issue.

The printer uses the 88 series of color cartridges (4 total - yellow, magenta, cyan, and black cartridges), and the 88 printheads (black-yellow, and magenta-cyan).

    Pros:

    1. Much more economical ink usage than the 6110. HOWEVER, you have to manually reset the default Windows printer parameters on every computer attached to this printer to take full advantage of this feature. The "Normal" default print setting gulps color ink at a prodigious rate - the color prints come out with the same depth of color as the "Best" setting for the 6110. So I am not at all sure that if you intend to use this printer to print a lot of photo quality prints how economical it will turn out to be. The "Draft" mode uses less ink but the color prints are not photo quality.

    2. The printer does have a full range of manually adjustable settings in the "Advanced" tab for Printer Preferences in Windows that allow you to really dial down the ink usage and also presumably allows you to tweak the color ink usage for photos to acceptable levels. Black and white documents come out looking very usable with the ink settings at the very lowest levels.

    3. Much faster than the 6110 for printing, scanning, etc. ADF works pretty good for scanning multiple documents.

    4. Wired network setup fairly easy on Windows XP.

    Cons:

    1. The very first time the L7555/L7590 powers up, it takes 20 minutes to fully initialize. Later, if you turn off or unplug this printer, it takes about two minutes to initialize. Don't ever turn this baby off!

    2. Installation of the driver software is also really slow, with a lot of popups requiring user interaction to continue the installation. If you have to load this software into several computers, it takes a while.

    3. It only recognizes USB 2.0. It will not recognize USB 1.0 plugs. A USB 2.0 4-port switch that I used initially created hangups during the boot process for the compute that was "on".

    4. The ADF feeder tray is still attached by way of two flimsy tabs. This is similar to the HP 6110 - one of the tabs on the 6110 ADF tray broke off after somebody set a heavy pile of stuff on top of it.

    5. Loud. Probably the loudest of the three Officejets that I have owned. But this is probably because it is also the fastest of the three.

    6. Footprint is 65% larger than the 6110 in square inches. It still fits on the same desktop space, just a tighter squeeze.

    7. The wired (and wireless) networking only work for up to five computers, according to the manual. I have not tested this.

All in all, the Cons are minor complaints. This is a good quality printer, priced cheaper than the 6110 had been five years ago, but MUCH BETTER. Printer prices have dropped dramatically, as manufacturers have discovered that the money is in the selling of printer cartridges, and so the best part of this printer is its much more economical use of ink. But you have to make sure to adjust the default settings for ink usage. And I am still waiting to see how long these replaceable printheads last, to see if they contribute to the cost of printing.

Addendum: I liked this All-In-One printer so much that I recently bought another one. Unfortunately, after a week or so of use, this one started having frequent paper feed jams, especially with two sided printing. And the auto-feed tray fed the papers in crooked. Fortunately, following my own advice, I'd gotten this printer at Costco like the first one (Costco rebrands this as the model L7555), and I returned it well within Costco's generous 90 day return period, and got another one, which so far is working fine. Remember, the price points are so important nowadays that quality control has really gone downhill and EVERY electronics manufacturer ships out some lemons. So strongly consider the return policy of any place that you buy your electronics from.

I've discovered another annoying aspect of the printer software when used on a network instead of a straight USB hookup - if you change routers or exchange printers, because each printer has its own unique network ID burned into its chips, you have to re-install the entire HP software package on every computer on your network. Simply re-installing the software on top of an existing installation doesn't work - you have to manually uninstall it first (the quickest way is to use the "Uninstall" option on the HP CD startup menu - this will uninstall all of the software in one sweep). This of course deletes all the special Windows Printer settings to reduce ink use, etc., that you have set up in your Printer Preferences, so you have to re-do all of that again also for each computer on your network. I have gone through this rigamarole three times now, changing from a D-link to a 2-Wire router/modem, exchanging printers, and then changing to an Actiontec router-modem.

With the Actiontec router/modem, the HP installation disc for some reason did not automatically detect the printer during installation for two of our computers, even though the Actiontec network browser page showed it was active. I had to manually identify the printer and input the printer IP address/MAC address. I tried using HP's latest update software, v.8, hoping it would work better, and it wouldn't identify or allow me to manually install this printer at all. So back to the v.7.0.0 CD - at least it works with manual installation. - HP doesn't list this version on their website, so don't lose your installation CD!

HP sure could make this re-installation process a WHOLE LOT better and easier!

  • Not bad but not easy to set up
I got a great deal from Amazon so I thought it was time to replace the HP G85 All in One we had used for 9 years.

It was packed well. There were pieces of tape in places I could not even imagine there could be tape. Be sure to get them all. The instructions were fine for the initial assembly.

It is true that it takes about 25 minutes to initialize. Why? What is the point?

Installing the printer was not easy. Except for the desk top wired directly to the router, the software could never find the printer. My computers are all Dell and the network is all LinkSys. There is nothing exotic or strange about the home set up. The laptops are using an access point and the software could never find the printer. We had to force it by using the IP address to find it. Only then could we install the printers using XP.

The Vista install was something else. The HP installation software NEVER found the printer. Not even with the IP address or being hooked directly. However the Vista Add a Printer function DID work. The HP Vista install disk just did not work. Microsoft saved the day.

The printer works fine and has a lot of features. I still have not figured out how to use the card reader to save photos. Since the reader is considered a removable drive it believes that the pictures have already been saved.

And it is noisy! When it ejects a page it makes a real racket.

The price and features make this a good deal. I have come to expect a lot more from HP and this was not one of their best efforts. The installation should be idiot proof. The software was obviously poorly tested.

You would probably be happy with the HP L7590 once it is installed

WELL SETUP WENT SMOOTHER THAN EXPECTED, BUT UPON INITIALIZING THE MACHINE KEPT GIVING ME A PAPER JAM ERROR, THE PAPER WASN'T BEING FED INTO THE SYSTEM AT ALL AND YET IT JUST KEPT THROWING THIS "PAPER JAM" ERROR. I HAVE AN HP FROM MANY YEARS AGO THAT HAS SERVED FAITHFULLY AND DONE VERY WELL BUT I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE MORE ROOM IN THE OFFICE AND GET RID OF "OLD BUBBA" OUR HUGE FAX MACHINE. THE PRODUCT UPON UNPACKING FELT LIKE IT HAD TOO MUCH SPACE AND PARTS THAT COULD RATTLE AROUND AND GET KNOCKED OUT OF ALIGNMENT. After doing some research and receiving a 12% Off coupon from Best Buy, I went and made this purchase over the Labor Day weekend. I installed the printer on my network and went through the installation with no issues. I did download the newest software from hp.com for both my Vista laptop and Intel-based Imac.
Print quality seems very good. Copies are excellent and the fax setup is just what I need. Have not done any scanning yet.
As with the other reviews - the setup is time consuming - but does not require a lot of interaction - so I was able to do other things and was not overly bothered by this.

  • Good boat anchor!
I previously owned an Hp 7310 AIO which worked well until the scan portion of the Hp Director software started giving an error message, "...device not found..." when I tried to scan documents, which is important to me as a real estate agent. For this and other reasons, I bought the Hp L7555 (same spec only sold by Sam's), only to encounter the same "device not found" message when I loaded the software. After spending 6.5 hrs. on the phone with Hp's tech support line over a 2 day period, I was informed that they could not fix my problem, and that I was being referred to a case manager, who would be calling in a couple of days. I got the call as promised, and, after explaining my problem to this guy, he admitted that Hp had a software problem and they had a team of engineers working on it. Even though he said the problem was unique to the "L" series AIO printer, he offered to send me an Hp L7680, as he said it did not have this problem. After some other discussion and assurances, I agreed to accept his offer. Well, to make a long story short, the L7680 had the exact same problem. I have now gotten rid of both printers, gotten my money back, and I bought a refurbished Brother MFC 340C for a lot less money, and so far, so good!...more info

I have my L7590 set up in my office, and it's working fine over the network with a variety of operating systems. It took a little bit of effort to set up on the laptops running Windows Vista. On the Macs I installed the stuff from the CD, and then just used one of the pre-installed HP OfficeJet drivers instead of the one that came with the printer. The Linux computer took about 30 seconds to set up. The print quality is good, and this printer's a lot faster than the last one we had....more info
  • Meets and maybe beats expectations...
Having used HP printers for many years, and most recently relied on a 7310 All-in-One unit for quite some time, I have high expectations for HP printers.... Thus far, I'm pleased with the 7590..its mechanical feed mechanism is solid, and consistently does what it is supposed to do...and nothing more. The print times are a noticeable improvement over prior models, and the color performance on photo quality items is quite good... My biggest complaint is that the drivers and set-up software contained in the box never seems to be sufficient to get HP printers working properly.... downloading the most current drivers from the HP Support site is, once again, a necessity. And, in addition, the HP Device Manager for this unit appears to be lacking something I really liked on the 7310 model... the ability to print in a "draft" setting... using considerably less ink and producing copies much faster....more info
  • Poor performer
I bought this HP to replace a Canon that died shortly after the warranty period - the second Canon to do so, so I decided to try something different. I've had the HP for a couple of months now, so I've had a chance to run it through its paces. It's a pain to assemble, but once that is done you won't have to deal with it again. It is a pretty good printer, using reasonable amounts of ink and producing a sharply printed page. However, I use the scanner a lot, and particularly the auto-feed. This is quirky; it jams frequently, and also skips pages. It will often display "paper loaded" and then fail to feed the sheet, producing a pathetic clicking sound as it misses its grip. The scanner is quirky with Paperport 11 and I still have not worked out all of the settings to get it to work consistently, if not smoothly. If you use the HP scan software you will have better success, but be warned it is really, painfully slow. Finally the fax is OK but lacks a hook key. In other words, if you call a number with a fax that has to be started manually, or if you use a calling card that announces your balance before making a connection, then you will not be able to fax because the machine will detect that there is no handshake and disconnect. Other machines (including Canons I've had) have a hook button - you wait for the fax on the other end to transmit (listening to the call through the built-in speaker) and press send once you hear the tone, so the link can be made.

All in all, this is a good printer, an OK flatbed scanner, a poor ADF scanner and fax, and not a fax for anyone who needs to depend on it. Naturally problems with feeding sheets will also affect the product's performance as a copier. I do not recommend this machine - too many problems and too many compromises.

  • Stay away from this printer (Or any other HP printer)
I have had HP printers for years. It is all I would ever buy. I have owned several HP's over the years personally and have managed IT departments and HP is the only brand of printer I would allow in to the environment. I currently have an HP 8000 class printer and the L7590

    No more.

The ownership of the L7590 was an evolution. We first bought an L7580. My wife needed to print some color output for her business that she manages out of the home and of course I suggested we get the HP business class inkjet. She needed to get the printouts done in a couple of weeks so I ordered it ground. It arrived a few days before she needed it, no worries right? Wrong.

So the printer arrives D.o.A. I call HP up and have to wait 10 minutes before talking to a very nice person in India, but this person can't help me, after following scripted instructions that did nothing to help the printer power up (it was truly dead on arrival), I got passed on to someone else, after another few minutes of waiting, I had to run through a different set of scripts. No dice. On to the third person, same set of steps as the first person, of course it doesn't work. Fourth person, asks what the problem is again, (imagine, the fourth time I am saying this now), and again, transferred to someone else. Now I am on my 5th person. I have had it. I ask for a manager. Transferred again. 6th person, not a manager. Explain the issue. Again. Transferred to a 7th person. Woah! I am talking to someone in the U.S. After 30 seconds of discussion, he determines that my printer is D.o.A. and sends me to the order group who then work on sending me a new printer.

Of course the new printer is not going to get here before the weekend. So now I have killed nearly 2 hours of my life talking to people in India to finally have my printer replaced but I am going to Kinko's anyway.

So over the course of the next year, little things begin to break, First the fax document feeder stops feeding documents. Well we never really used it and can live with pulling up the tray to put the documents on the glass and then fax. But just after the warranty expires, of course the black printhead stops working. I go buy HP black ink, put it in, go through the cleaning process several times. No dice.

Call HP - Of course the printer is out of warranty now but wait! They have a brand new HP L7590 they will sell me at a bargain basement price as a 'replacement' for the one I have. So for $149 + $40 for the three year warranty, we get a new HP Printer. You guessed it! It shows up *Dead on Arrival*

So again we get on the phone with HP. This time we were only bounced around 6 times (again explaining the issue every time, going through the stupid scripts they have, again finally asking for a manager, and then a couple of transfers). This time the issue was that the wires in the network jack were bent so it wouldn't recognize the network. You would think that would be an easy concept for the technicians to understand. You would be wrong. Finally I blow a gasket again and get transferred to someone who can actually help me. Now they are shipping me a replacecment printer for the *new* replacement printer that was a replacement for the original one that I replaced. Whew.

So here comes the *new, new, HP L7590* I unpackage it, get it setup. Finally, one that works! So now I have to send back the old printer and the new 7590.

About 10 days later I get an email saying they haven't received the L7590 and if they don't get it, I will get charged for it. So again I call in to HP. Again I get bounced around. 7 people this time. Again with all of them going through their insipid and useless scripts. Again having to explain over and over again that I have sent the printer, I have the tracking number, it shows up having been received by HP 3 full days before the email was sent. I was extra patient this time around and just tried to be very clear with what was going on. By the 4th or 5th person I was simply saying, 'You shipped me two printers, I shipped you back two printers, you can't find one, I am not paying for it' until finally the 8th person was the right person!

So she tells me that they did indeed have the printer but that their ordre system hadn't been updated. So now I have burned another hour and a half of my life for nothing. But then she followed it up with 'If they do charge your card we will make sure it gets reversed' And if you think I am buying that, you might think I would buy another HP. Not a chance. If a charge shows up, I am simply going to call Amex and have it removed.

And I am never, ever, buying an HP of any kind again. They took the one solid performer they had, their printers, and have destroyed the quality AND the service. The two key things I would have always bought an HP for before.

So buy this, or any HP printer at your own risk. It seems they have this down to half the original price. Even at that, it's not worth your time and frustration.

  • L7590, like the printer, hate the install
I was very excited to get such a good deal on the HP Officeject Pro L7590, $199 at OfficeMax. I had looked at more than enough reviews to realize that this printer may not be the easiest thing to install. But, I figured I was up for the challenge. After all, in my life as an office manager, I've installed at least 10 printers on different computers!

    Ugh! Was I wrong.

Day one: First, I did exactly what all the reviews said to do.... Ignore the installation CD and go straight to the updated drivers on the HP website. Well, after installing and reinstalling at least 5 times because it wouldn't recognize my printer (even though it said it was installed!), I thought I would give those wonderful HP technicians a try. Several times, I told the first tech I spoke with that the printer didn't connect unless I unplugged the USB from the computer and then reconnected. THEN, and only then, would the installation recognize the device. Of course, at one point, the technician gave me a long list of things to do and said, "You will have to restart your computer and you will lose connection with me. If you have any other additional problems, here is your trouble ticket number and you can call back." Famous last words.

So, I did the 4 different things the instructions told me to do and they didn't work. Surprise. So, I tried using the installation CD. This time it worked (though it still did not recognize the device until I unplugged the USB cable from computer). However, I could not get anything to print. Now, when I first purchased the printer, the salesperson asked if I had a printer that used a USB cable. I said `yes' and he said, "Okay, then you won't need a new one." But, because of the way it was acting with connection during installation, I decided to try a new USB anyway. Voile! Now I could print... but, I couldn't scan!

Day two: After speaking with 3 more technicians (who, at the end of the conversation said, "You will have to restart your computer and you will lose connection with me. If you have any other additional problems, here is your trouble ticket number and you can call back.") who gave me no solution at all, the 4th technician said, "Let's try installing the updated driver from the HP website, again. But, first let's make sure you aren't already currently updated." So, he asks me to click on a link he provided and then click on the "Check if you are up to date" link on the page. I tell him I don't see the link. He says, "It is there." Well, after 30 minutes of trying to get me to see the link, *I* realize that I am not using Internet Explorer but Mozilla and I cannot view these links with Mozilla. Hmmmmm, shouldn't the tech have asked, at some time, what browser I was using? I'm not the tech, he is. Also, I told the tech I had HP folders/files on both my C and D drive. He kept trying to delete them in a multitude of ways with no success. After I disconnected from HP for the last time ("You will have to restart your computer and you will lose connection with me. If you have any other additional problems, here is your trouble ticket number and you can call back.") I decided to right click on all the folders/files and delete.

To make a long story even longer, I installed the driver from the HP site and now the printer works perfectly. All in all, it took 16 hours to install this `puppy' (more than 6 of those hours were wasted talking to HP techs)... which translates to an additional $280 this printer cost me!

The printer is loud and `jerky' but fast. The print and copy jobs, even in the draft mode, come out looking great. It seems the ink *is* lasting longer, too. Blank paper capacity is three times the amount of the 6110xi I previously owned. Note: Print heads and ink are separate. Don't know how long the print heads will last.

Summary: Like the printer, hate the install (which, btw, the actual installation, without problems, takes a loooong time). Get a new USB and download driver from website. HP techs good for only helping you eliminate the obvious.

  • This printer sucks!
This is the worst printer I have ever bought. The print heads contantly need to be cleaned in order for it to print right. It prints with blank spaces every inch, all the way up and down the page. cleaning the printheads fixes the problem most of the time, but if you aren't CONSTANTLY printing something, the problem will return after a while. Best Buy replaced the whole unit once for me, but the second unit did the same thing, and since more time had gone buy now they are pointing their finger at HP, and refusing to exchange it again. Printheads have been replaced twice by HP, temporarily fixing the problem, but the problem is still rears its ugly head. HP won't exchange it for another model. And Best Buy will keep dodging you around with quick fixes until their 90 days is up and then tell you they can't do anything. Buy something else, this thing sucks....more info
  • Dont buy it if you own a Mac
What what a disappointment. If you own a Mac good luck trying to figure out how to scan, don't call tech support because they don't offer live help for Mac users. When you go online to trouble shoot, the resources are a joke. I'm returning it....more info
  • DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME
I am running this AIO on an HP desktop using Vista Home Premium.

It faxes and copies ok but after that, it's a large paperweight.

    - Prints partial photos,
    - constantly looks to reinstall its software and
    - scanning when you need it is successful 25% of the time.

Support from HP is the worst I've experience from any company as they read from a script and offer little help. It is the last HP product I will purchase.

  • Better than expected
Design problem: they put the sticker with the serial # on the bottom of the printer so you have to tilt it up to see it. Tech problem: I had to install three times (with help from India) to get all the software to install and functionality to get up and running. Customer service problem: Indian guys don't write/speak english perfectly so it can be confusing and frustrating to get help. However, it was an inexpensive printer with a lot of functionality. We'll see how long it lasts.

--UPDATE-- On my third chat session with HP Help in New Delhi, we discovered that my computer had a bad virus that was affecting Windows (the error is a "Just-In-Time debugging error"). It is our assumption that the install of the HP software was not successful because of this windows error-- i.e. not HP's fault. Tried to install the software again on another computer (which connects to the printer wirelessly and it went incredibly smoothly. Would upgrade my review from a 3-star to a 4-star, but Amazon won't let me....more info
  • A disappointing mistake
The document feeder works less than 8% of the time. After countless hours, several weeks of delay tactics on the part of off-shore support, and a replacement printer that began having the same problem within 24 hours, we are finished. Our first printer began experiencing automatic document feeder problems within the first month. We've tried everything and we're finished trying to deal with HP. We're cutting our losses, taking it to the dump, and never looking at HP products again. We're bitterly disappointed and wish we could get back our money and all the hours we've sacrificed....more info
  • Outstanding Printer...
Our whole family has been very satisfied with this printer. It is amazingly fast for an inkjet machine and the quality of the printouts is first rate. The black letters are crisp and the color (and overall photo print) quality was surprising. Did not really expect such nice results since the printer does not have quite the pixel image quality that the equivalent Canon machine advertised. All the same, I am glad to have purchased this unit given the availability of ink cartridges wherever we shop and their relatively low cost.

As far as consumables are concerned, although we have yet to use any one of our cartridges up, we have printed many sheets so far and do not appear to have even dented the ink read-out levels.

As far as I am concerned, this purchase is first rate...and buying from Amazon made it that much easier....more info
  • HP L7590 printer
Printer was easy to install and works fine. My only complaint is to find out, in order to make it wireless, I need to purchase an additional kit for $100. Without the additional wirelesss kit, it's working on an Ethernet cable connection to the wireless modem....more info
