Customer Reviews:

  • Awesome for scrapbooking!
I had a little trouble getting my first print out, but it wasn't something too hard to figure out. I've mainly used it to print out my digital scrapbook pages on Epson 12x12 paper and it's great! After a few more prints this printer will have paid for itself! I say this when comparing it to getting 12x12 prints done from websites such as [...], where it can get expensive really fast! I'm very happy with my printer! The only drawback...the ink needs to be ordered online or by phone as it's not available at local retailers...this is ok because Epson has a quick turnaround for shipping the inks, just remember to plan ahead so you're not stuck without ink....more info
  • Not worth the money and head achs
I bought the Epson 1900 to back up a old 2200 I have and have had nothing but problems since. To start off it eats through inks getting half the total square inch coverage I get on my 2200. I have had continuous paper feeding issues using Epson papers. Every now and then in the process of printing a image it dumps a ton of ink on the paper making the print worthless. Now in switching ink cartridges it won't recognize the new cartridge. In fact it won't recognize any of them. I've re-booted the printer several times, re-installed the software several times and am ready to trash it. In the 5-6 years I've had the 2200 I've never had a issue. I even recommended Epson to another photographer and they've had nothing but problems. Obviously Epson cares nothing about quality anymore and this will be the last Epson I buy. To top it off the customer service number is not a 1-800 number. ...more info
  • Now Five Stars!!! If Calirated, It's Wonderful
I received my Epson, fired it up, and it made a horrible whining/grinding noise. I thought, man, this thing is toast. I tried a few more times and the print head wouldn't engage. So I called Epson, and they sent me a brand new unit right away. I asked if it was new, because I heard they will send you refubs sometimes; but it was new. The second one printed no problem, and I was off and running.

I did notice with the first prints that the colors were a bit cool and on the bluish side. iPhoto said the same thing, so I have played with the settings, but I still get so so results. The problem really lies with my monitor. It isn't calibrated. So what I am seeing isn't what is being translated onto the paper. So I have upped the ante and sprung for the Spyder3 Studio Suite monitor and print calibrator. Now I will be able to get the screen dialed in, and display on my screen what color gamut my printer can actually do. Now I can make my own profiles for paper and color. In theory everything should be spot on. I know it's an extra $350 (with current rebate to 11/30) but what use is an amazing printer if the colors aren't what they should be because of un-tuned hardware? If you get this printer, at least calibrate your monitor.

I have read also that the Epson glossy profile is a bit cool, but if you use the watercolor paper and profile, the colors come out much better and truer to life. And the paper is about or equal in price with the glossy, but with a much more professional look.

As for the machine itself, it seems pretty well built. Quiet and smooth, I am amazed I can print a 13x19 professional looking print in the comfort of my own house. So far the ink consumption hasn't been too bad. I am a bit bummed the cartridges are so small, but what can you do?... I was also a bit upset that I had to do a nozzle cleaning after a week of inactivity. With the amount of ink used in a purge, those are precious ml. I shouldn't have to clean after a week of non-use. Come on Epson...

But I suppose I can't complain. I think when tuned with a properly calibrated monitor, this thing is going to rock. I will update as we go along.

    Update: November 23, 2008

I received the Spyder3 Studio Calibration System the other day. I installed, followed directions, and made two custom profiles in about an hour. One for matte and the other for glossy. The colors that were reproduced were fantastic and matched the screen amazingly well. I noticed the black and whites printed with the Epson profiles were a bit blue in cast. That was all fixed with the Spyder3, and the prints look neutral and pleasing to the eye.

Also, I was in a store the other day, and the shop guy said he knew one of the fellows who designs the color profiles for Epson. The Ultra Premium Matte profile is "supposed" to be one of the better profiles. Well, the printer coupled with my own profiles kicked the Epson profile to the curb. No comparison whatsoever.

All in all, this is a great printer. I am giving it five stars once calibrated. It's smooth, quiet, and prints amazing photos once you get it dialed in. I highly recommend this printer....more info
  • Inflated Amazonian List Price....Beware!
Epson's own website shows a list price of 549.99 for this printer. They offer it for sale at 449.99. Why does Amazon make a practice of showing totally inflated MSRPs? We dont' trust you anymore Jeffy boy....more info
  • Nothing but trouble - Stay away!
I've had this for 2 weeks and had nothing but problems with it. When it does print, it's a great quality print (hence the 2 stars). But it's quite temperamental, even with OS 10.4.8 and fresh new drivers from the Epson website. And Epson Canada don't even have an 1-800 number to call to; I have to pay the long distance fee!

I've been glued to the manual for the last 2 weeks, looking at the error page non stop, wondering why this printer won't print. It's always saying that I loaded the wrong media (please insert DVD when I did select Letter size), and flashing "paper jam" when I load a DVD!!

Bottom line: I'm returning it today and will get a Canon instead. My last one was a Canon ip8500 and I loved it right until it died. I though Epson would have a longer lasting life... But of course if I can't print with it, what's the point of having it for years?...more info
  • Epson R1900 review
As a recent photo school grad I have made hundreds of prints on various professional printers... I have to say that the prints from my new R1900 are the best I have ever made. The colors, gradations and fine details in the prints are rendered perfectly. The gloss optimizer coat gives rich glossy prints that look like traditional photo lab prints. The printer features automatic matte black ink switching which means I can make quality prints on any kinda of media...even CD's! And It's fast. Basically if you want to make exquisite glossy prints as large as 13x19 inches you will be thrilled with this printer. ...more info
  • Ink Hungry Nozzle Clogger
The printer seems to get head clogs any time I transport it. This is something that my 2 year old r1800 has no problem with. When running the nozzle cleaning cycles it eats through a bunch of ink, and usually takes several tries. I will be getting rid of this printer as soon as I get through some of the extra ink I bought for it.

Epson has tried to help with phone support, but a brand new printer shouldn't have problems like this....more info

  • An Incredible Printer!
I have to say that this printer has been blowing me away! I have been thinking about getting a larger-format photo printer for some time, as my Epson Stylus CX5200 is getting tired and outdated. I am using the R1900 with an iMac and OSX 10.4.9. My camera is a Canon PowerShot SD900 (10.0 MP).

I expected the printer to come with some paper samples to try, so I didn't order large-format paper until I received the printer and found that there were NOT any samples. So, I played around with some paper I had on hand until the bigger paper came. First, I printed out a flyer for a concert that contained both text and a color photo. Like another reviewer, at first I didn't realize how many different settings there are for print and paper quality. Using bright white paper and a "photo paper setting" on the computer, the photo was disappointingly flat. I looked around the menu options on the computer, and under the "print settings" menu, I could go with "Plain/Bright White Paper," and then the print quality was excellent.

One application that I haven't seen mentioned here (it's specialized, I know!) is printing sheet music. My CX5200 often splits the lines or gets kind of fuzzy if the ink is starting to get low, but with bright white paper or heavier, the R1900 prints out incredibly clear music notation - something I will use it for often.

The large photo paper I ordered in sheet form is Ilford Premium Photo Pearl Paper in 13"X19" size. Two shots were of the beach and one was of an iris that I took on a macro setting. All three came out spectacular. The detail of the flower is just incredible, as is the purple color.

Next I tried some Epson borderless 4"X6" premium glossy photo paper. I printed out some color shots and a black and white one - all superlative. I didn't encounter any drops of ink on the edges of the photos as was mentioned by someone earlier.

Then I tried a shot of my black and brown dog on the beach on Kodak Premium Picture Paper that is 8 1/2"X11". That's the only print I'm a little disappointed with, but, to be fair, this is an older package of photo paper that might have been improved over the past several years. All of the rest of the prints have been dry to the touch as soon as I took them out of the printer, but this print still feels kind of damp after more than an hour.

I'm still in shock (GOOD shock!) about the last three prints I did, which were on Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper on a 13"X32.8' roll. One is a shot I took with the zoom on my camera of a harbor seal sunning itself in the surf. The details on the animal and the water are eye-popping. The second one was of two brown pelicans flying over the surf (I live on the Oregon Coast and that's where I take most of my photos!) - again, breathtaking detail in the wings of the birds as well of the movement of the water. The third is again of the ocean, but this one is almost all blues of varying shades and large areas of sky. This was a good test, because often on other printers, large areas of smooth textures end up with lines or other imperfections in the prints. This one is perfect.

I just checked the ink levels, and not surprisingly, the blue and black are low, but I've printed quite a few very large prints without any problems. It would be nice if the ink levels stayed high forever, but for the money I'm saving in not having to send out for enlargements, I'm happy.

I feel very confident that I could enter these prints in a competition and do well. Guess what everyone is getting for Christmas! I give this printer both thumbs up and highly recommend it. My only word of caution is to be sure your camera has enough MPs to enlarge the prints to the maximum level. One of the reasons I bought this particular camera is that the prints are supposed to be clear up to 16"X20". Not all digital cameras can do that. I'll keep my CX5200 for everyday printing, but all of the important things will go through the R1900. Love it!!!...more info
  • Epson 1900 printer
I have received this printer in good shape and on time. This printer does just a little better than a HP printer on resolution. This printer can make up to 13x19 inch prints and does a good job on all. I just wish the ink catridges were larger and it would tell me how much inck was in the catridge on the label. HP catridges are about three times larger but they cost three times as much too. The price was right for me for the printer....more info
  • Terrible!
A lawyer, CFO and two other white collar professionals stood around this printer for six hours, coaxing it to print on a sheet of 12 x 12 paper for scrapbooking. Still, the printer would only print 8 1/2 wide. It may be possible to go bigger, but we don't know how. Maybe HP is easier to use....more info
  • A great printer for the price
    Epson 1900 Photo Printer

For over 40 years I have been a professional photographer. I have printed many 1000's of images. Most of the time it was trial and error until I got what I wanted! There were long hours in the darkroom or working with Photoshop.

A good friend of mine suggested I buy the 1900. He kept telling me how great it a printer the 1900 was! Well the first print out of the box blew my socks off. I had given up printing photos of the grand kids because the quality from my former printer. I am now going to start printing again with a renewed energy. The color is vibrant. The print is sharp as a tack.

My only negative about the 1900 was there was no USB cord included. For that much money a cord could be included.

  • Epson R1900 Review
Epson R1900 Large Format Photo Printer

I previously had been using Epson Stylus Photo 1280 printer and thought it was about time to upgrade to the new Epson photo R1900 printer. To say that I was taken aback by the performance and print results of this new printer, would be an understatement.

Immediately upon opening the box I found the instructions which made the setup very easy. In no time at all, I was printing pictures. I need the capability of being able to print 13 inch wide photos and since I'm printing pictures of clothing, I like the fact that the R1900 uses pigment-based Ultra Chrome Hi-Gloss ink, which gives much better color definition of my products. The picture quality that it produces with the smooth gloss finish is nothing less than extraordinary.

Occasionally, I give a CD of my products to a customer and really like the fact that I now can print on the CD, making it much more professional looking.

I would highly recommend the Epson R1900 for anyone wanting a printer that can produce outstanding vivid prints up to 13 inches wide. I would also recommend using Epson Ink and Premium Photo Glossy paper for continued outstanding prints.

  • Drinks ink like there's no tomorrow, full of bugs on Mac OS X Leopard, just a miserable experience overall
I'm a professional photographer. I've owned many Epson printers over the last 10 years. Setting up the R1900 on a Mac Pro running OS X Leopard is by far the worst experience I've ever had with setting up any printer on any operating system. The driver for Leopard didn't ship with the printer. So after you installed the driver and software that came with the printer and printing out a test print as the instructions stated, you'll have to download the latest driver for Leopard from Epson's web site. After the update, however, the system stopped recognizing the printer all together. I had to remove the printer from the system preferences, uninstall and install the driver from scratch, THEN plug the printer back in for the system to recognize the printer with the new driver. So i thought i've had all the problems solve. Not so fast. Next I found out that the Print CD software that the printer came with doesn't work. It insists that the driver that deals with CD/DVD printing hasn't been installed, even though I've installed everything I was instructed to install. After 3 days of searching online, I finally found the FAQ well hidden within Epson's web site that explains how to fix this problem. The solution? You have to RESET ALL of your printers in the system preferences!!! And Epson warns you: "Resetting the printing system will remove all installed printer drivers. You'll need to reinstall any printer drivers that you still need after resetting. " Which isn't true, BTW, resetting the print system merely removed the printers from the system printer list, it does NOT delete the drivers. Nonetheless, is Epson for real??? The only solution they can come up with is for the user to RESET their entire print system and force them to reinstall all the printers?!?! What a joke. So far I've spent (more like wasted) a week just installing, updating, and resetting drivers not only for this printer, but ALL of my printers.

As for print quality, yes, it is better than my old R1800. BUT it uses almost twice as much ink as the older model!!! A set of ink only lasted about 30 glossy 8x10s, and this is for photos of a white dog shot against white background, which should've used very little ink. I probably could've printed 100 of these on the R1800 before the ink ran out on that.

I got the printer to supplement my Stylus Pro, thinking I could use a cheaper printer for less critical prints. So far it has cost me countless hours of wasted time, plus an insane amount of money on ink compared to using the R1800 that it replaced. I'm so fed up with it I'm about ready to chuck it out the window. If you like chucking heavy and expensive objects out your windows, by all means by this printer. ;)...more info
  • quality flaw, had to return
I can't rate this yet. My unit would not operate, due to what appears to have been a flawed ink sensor. Ink light stayed on solid, and would not budge despite resetting of (new) inks. Very disaapointing, but I'll no doubt try it again with a replacement. ...more info
  • Gorgeous output
The prints this thing makes are *OUTSTANDING*. I have not had any trouble with cartridges or although it does take quite a few (8 or 9) IIRC. They are also difficult to find as this is a new printer but I believe they'll become more common.

    Cons:
    * Antiquated epson software that looks like it belongs in OS 9
    * Didn't come with a printed manual.
    * Uses ink/gloss optimized quickly (but photo printing is expensive -- period)

    Pros:
    * The output is GORGEOUS
    * An 8.5 x 11 takes under a minute to complete.
    * Works out of the box
    * Did I mention the output is gorgeous?

  • This is a stunning printer
I was hesitant about purchasing this printer after some of the reviews here, but, I'm so glad I got it.

I spent some time studying the manual before I set it up. I knew to download the proper ICC profiles and use Epson paper, and use the settings specified in the instructions. I also calibrated my monitor so the colors would be true from monitor to paper. Some of the other reviewers have mentioned problems with paper size and ICC profiles, and I had absolutely no issues.

My first print was velvety, the colors were rich and the blacks solid. There is a small amount of noise in the shadow areas but it's the least I've ever seen in all my years of digital printing, noticeable only if your face is a few inches away from the print. I showed some prints to family and the response was a uniform "wow".

I don't have the space for the larger 2400 but I'm so happy with the R1900 (and saving a few hundred dollars) that I don't care. I can't wait to try different art papers and experiment. ...more info
  • Stunning glossy prints!
After having run about 20 prints through this device (combination of 4x6 and 8.5x11) I am amazed by the quality. It works flawlessly with my Mac using Aperture 2 to print. I followed the directions here:

    [..]

and had no trouble getting proper color correction in my workflow. With Epson Premium Glossy Paper and the gloss optimizer tank you can get great glossy prints from this pigment-based inkjet. I'm glad 4 GLOP cartridges come in each refill as the GLOP cartridge is nearly empty already....more info
  • Customer Service is a joke!!!
Let's start with their "Technical Support" Evidently, Epson cannot afford a toll free number so if you have a problem, you're referred to a (562) area code (Supposedly CA.) which then gets relayed to hmmmm I'm guessing India? Evidently they are paid based on the length of time they can keep you on the phone while not answering your questions. They then try to run through a series of basic trouble shooting scripts. When the language barrier and confusion gets unbearable and you ask to speak to the supervisor, they then insist they're doing everything possible to help and why do you want to speak to the supervisor? On two occasions, I was placed on hold for about 2 minutes and then mysteriously disconnected. After submitting a lengthy "Contact us" e-mail, it took 5 days to get a response. ...more info

  • Better than I hoped
I have had this printer for a week now and all I can say is WOW! I was concerned after I read the reviews here but decided to buy anyway because of past experience with Epson, and I am so happy I did.

When the box arrived I picked up the 'Start Here' booklet and within an hour and three prints (13"x19") I was getting better results than the stuff I had paid a professional lab $15.00 each for! No more, I just fired my lab.

I am printing from Photoshop CS3 using Adobe RGB color space and ICC information. The prints are incredibly color saturated with great contrast to really 'pop'.

I am absolutely in love with this printer!

    Another week:

No change in my opinion, other than I like it even more. I printed 20 8x10 and 7 13x19 before having to add ink (Yellow and Cyan). Prints on Epson's fine art paper are fantastic! This is my last review....more info
  • Epson R1900 Hi Def Photo Printer
The R1900 is BIG. Be sure you have the space for it to rest. I have had several high end HP photo printers and they pale when compared to the R1900. It is simply the best photo printer I have seen. The term Hi Def certainly applies....more info
