Customer Reviews:

  • Under rated
I received my headphones today and was surprised by what I found. This is a headphone that is made for serious listening and made to last.

Heavy cabling that doesn't feel cheap, the ear cup on the phones worked first try in my ear (that never happens), clear microphone. I like that they are designed to wear over the ear.

I would have easily paid list for these. I have paid much more for much less quality....more info
  • Agree with the other "average" ratings
The sound quality is really quite good. But the heavy duty cord, bulky mic, and oddly shaped & unbalanced speaker housings lead to my earbuds constantly falling out of my ears. Probably a great set if you are going to use them while just sitting at your desk - but if you want a pair of headphones you can use while you know - walk around - these aren't the pair.

  • Decent earphones
These work pretty well. I can use them with my cell phone or can plug them into the equipment at the gym when I work out. They seem sturdier than other Shure headphones I've had that cost a lot more, and they sound pretty good too....more info
  • Pretty Good!
I bought these as a Christmas present for myself because they were on sale.

    Pros:
    - Great Sound (I'm no audiophile but I'm pretty satisfied with the sound - deep bass however, I would like more differentiation between voice and instruments)
    - Isolation - I use these at the gym and I can't hear the background noise at all. Made for a much more focused workout :). I used these on a plane ride recently as well and I could have slept like a baby. I had some marshmallow ear buds that were suppose to cancel noise, but with these I didn't know what I was missing!
    - Fit - I found these to be a great fit right out of the box once i learned how to put them in right. The cord has to wrap around the backside of your ear - unconventional but really quite genius. I've always had trouble with the iPhone or iPod standard white headphones staying in my ear but these fit great. I can also work out with these with no problem of them falling out while running.
    - Price - you really can't go wrong with the price here for a pair of Shure isolating ear buds. in store - sony's or sennheiser's branded headphones would go well over $59-$69 dollars.
    - Extras - it comes with 3 pairs of buds to make sure you get the right fit. i haven't had any problem with the rubber ear pieces falling out at all (happens a lot to cheaply made ear buds) the rubber pieces are quite sturdy. so you can throw them in your bag and go without having worry about pieces missing. These buds come with an ugly pouch to hold the earphones but do the job well of protecting them when stowed away.

    Cons:
Most of the reviews are pretty spot on with the cons.
    - Microphone does not have any phone controls (play/pause or call/end) and requires you to take out your phone. I use this with my iPhone 3g and i have it in my hand alot anyway to change songs/check email etc. so this is not a problem for me.
    - The cord is a bit long.
    - Cord is a bit thick - don't expect the slick white standard iPhone or iPod headphones with these shure ones. it's a bit on the bulk side but i think it just looks more sturdy/expensive.
    Conclusion:
I'm an urban dweller that makes use of these mostly on the bus to work, walking the loud streets of SF, or working out at the gym. Great sound, great bang for the buck, they stay in my ear with no problems, and a handy microphone that works great with the iPhone 3g. I recommend these earphones!

  • Great product , but...
This product is great, and is super low price.
But it's a bit uncomfortable for a while. ...more info
  • Good sound, poor fit
Product puts out good sound. Handles bass well. Buds continue to slip out. Possible because of weight of plugs and microphone attachment. ...more info
  • Works Well For iPhone, but Lacks Button
I like the fit and the quality of the sound. The only minor downside to the unit is that it does not have a button to answer/hang up/pause song and there is no audio feedback through the headset when you are on the phone. I paid less than $40 so I think I still got a good deal since the quality of the sound and noise isolation is very good. The cord is little thicker than most, but I hope that will make it last long since I am hard on headsets since I use them all the time on my motorcycle, mountain bike, and just out for a walk. The cords loop over the ear and stay there most of the time. The headset connects to the phone with a right angle connector and is heavy duty in design. I would recommend these to any iPhone user as long as they are not use to using the pause button like on the Apple and most of the other headsets, but have a great sound for the price....more info
  • I am SHURE That These Earbuds Stink.
To be fair, the treble on these earbuds is great. The problem- there is absolutely no bass range. The sound is tinny and weak. I was sure to properly insert the earbuds in to my ear canal per the instructions. The bass is just not there. I am an online gamer and was trying to use this with World of Warcraft. These earbuds have the worst sound of any audio product I have ever purchased. I am very disappointed and will be returning these back to Amazon....more info
  • Works with iPhone & Blackberry Bold
This is a 3.5mm jack. If your device doesn't accept a 3.5mm, then this is not the device for you.

I've had this product for about 1 week. I primarily use these as phone headsets for my iPhone and my Blackberry Bold. I really like them for that purpose:

    1. Voice comes into both ears (2 mono)
    2. The sound isolation makes calls extremely clear by sealing out almost all background noise. I've never had a clearer international call.
    3. The people I'm calling like the sound quality of the microphone
    4. The carrying case is nice
    5. For music, frequency response is very accurate and similar to other significantly more expensive Shure headsets

    The downsides for this:

    1. They are difficult to insert into the ear canal and the process usually takes both hands (I've had similar issues with other Shure headphones)
    2. Inserting the earbuds properly while driving can be challenging
    3. The headset is somewhat bulky
    4. Wearing these over extended periods of time may be uncomfortable
    5. Given how far you need to insert these, you probably don't want to share this product with anyone...more info
  • Good for the price
This was a good purchase considering the original price and the sale price at which I got it for.
However, these particular headphones were specifically made for the iPhone. It creates a echo'y sound in my archos 404 player. I dont know if its the 3 lines on the input jack but that it kind of annoying.
The fit of the earpieces are good and it takes some getting used to the way the earpiece comes around the back of the ear, but after some adjustment time, they are more comffy than the normal headphones.
Overall, worth the money, but not as versatile as I thought initially....more info
  • Great set for wind noise
I own a convertible, and have tried about a dozen wired and wireless headsets over the last three or four months looking for one that I can use with my top down. I have tried the Z9, the Z9i, both jawbones, and a few less commonly known sets. This set is by far the best for dealing with wind noise. It puts the mic inside a tube a few inches down from the right earpiece, which seems to create a windless cavity for the mic. It is by no means perfect, but it is pretty darned good. There are some issues with how the earpieces fit in the ear. The set is designed to have the wires loop over the tops of each ear and around the back side. The headset comes with three different sizes of earplugs though, and I find it works better for me to use the next size up of plugs so they fit snugly, and then let the wires hang down like most other headsets do....more info
  • Great isolation, sound, comfort
I've had a pair of E2Cs for a long time, and love them, but I yanked the cord one too many times and needed a new pair. I use the "Shure foam sleeves" instead of the black plastic ones that came with these headphones, so my experience may differ a bit.

Most earbuds eventually start to hurt my ears, but I've kept these in during some long plane trips with no discomfort. In fact, their isolation of outside noise is so nice that I'll leave them on even when I'm not listening to something while on an airplane. I also use them when mowing the lawn or running on the treadmill.

Unlike some of Shure's other models, you can't pick up calls or mute without getting your phone out. I'm not in the habit of just picking up calls without looking at my phone first so this missing feature does not bother me. People generally say they can't tell I'm using a headset when talking on these.

*I* think these sound great. They're not big bass-thumping machines so if you're the kind of person that always turns the bass up on your stereo, these are not for you.

I do wish they had some kind of clip. Most Shures have a piece of tubing you can slide up to keep the wires nicely under your chin. These don't have anything, which is my biggest complaint with them. The wires are also not as beefy as other Shure models....more info
  • good price for better than average earphones
My apple earbuds went out within 4 months of owning the iPhone. Perhaps this is to be expected, but I think earphones should last longer than that. When I first set out to get a new set, I decided that I would get high quality ones. Shure makes some of the best earphones, however this model is probably a farcry from the pricey ones. That being said, these are really great. I had a problem spending $100+ on a set of earphones when they all seem to break at one point, thus making $50 an acceptable medium.

    Pros:
    - they fit in my ear snug to block out outside noises
    - the sound quality is much better than stock earbuds
    - the microphone works pretty well
    - if the wiring somehow becomes dislodged from the earbud (like most ones do), i'll just return it due to the warranty

    Cons:
    - there is no call/receive click button
    - not that i use these for working out, but since the earbuds fit snug in your ear canal, you will hear lots of noise from the wire rubbing on you (much like a doctor's stethoscope). However I only use these at work which is awesome since it blocks out the sound of people around me. ...more info
  • Not up to Shure standards
The sound of these is just ok, but worse the is no standard button for answering a call, pausing a song or fast forwarding. You can do better for the price....more info
  • Pros + Cons... For A Shure Product, Surprisingly Average But Not Bad
To keep this quick and simple... the reasons that make these headphones mediocre in my mind are:

    - Very bulky, long, and stiff stereo cable
    - Music sound quality not as crisp as I would have hoped (i'm a die-hard audiophile so this may be just a gripe)
    - Ringer volume comes through much louder than everything else
    - No answer call button

The good things that make up for it are:

    - Works with IPhone and any cell phone with a 3.5mm (not 2.5mm, which is usually the norm for cell phones) headset jack
    - Price
    - Call sound quality
    - Nylon carrying case with extra wax filters, various ear plugs/adapters

All in all, it's a decent product; but don't get your hopes up, just because it's made by Shure....more info
  • Excellent quality, but not the most comfortable
Excellent sound quality. Bass, mid, and treble all come through crisp, thorough, and clear. Absolutely brilliant sound quality. Sound isolation good as well. The hands free microphone works well and has good sound quality. The wires are thicker than a usual pair of earbud headphone's wires usually are, but it makes them far sturdier. Only problem I found is that they are not the most comfortable in the world. They are not awful, but they are different and will take a week or two of regular use to get used to them....more info
  • Great phones, don't work for all devices
This is a great price for Shure earphones, and the microphone works as advertised.
Good sound quality and good noise isolation.
I'm not an audiophile so I can only compare it to headphones below 100 dollars and it compares favorably to headphones in that range and certainly against cheapo crap that's included with devices.

My main issue with it is that it only seems compatible with the iPhone.
I tried using it with my iPod and for some odd reason, the iPod keeps pausing as if the earphones had been unplugged (it was not).
Also when I tried using it with another mp3 player from Cowon, it did not give me a proper volume unless I pulled it out half way.

Given that it is designed as a headset, I won't give it 3 stars, but I bought it expecting to get headphones that just happen to have a microphone.
It isn't- get it only if you want to use it with the iPhone or another phone....more info
  • Really good, but...
I was a little surprised by the lack of depth (bass) with these headphones. However, the sound quality is great, especially for the price. The cord is a little thick, but I find that ok since I'm pretty rough on my headsets anyway.

I'll definitely use these but my search will continue for a pair of iPhone headphones with heavier bass.

  • Does not work with PDA
The sound is great and with my iPod works great. However, I purchased it to use with my PDA and the 3.5 connection I needed to a 2.5 to 3.5 adaptor which I purchased with the headphone. I recevied the adaptor only to find it did not reduce to a 2.5. I purchased an adaptor from Radio shack but the headphone only picked up mono and did not work with the phone. ...more info
  • One earbud keeps dying, and this is on 4 separate units
Bought two of these. Started using the first one, and the right earbud stops working (or is incredibly, incredibly faint). I send it to Amazon for an exchange. In the meanwhile, I use the second one, and the left earbud goes out on that one.
Receive the exchange for the first, and am incredibly careful with this one--always wrap it properly, stow it in its carrying case. Right earbud stops working. Receive the exchange for the second, am even more careful, but this one also has the right earbud go in and out and eventually die within two days.

I'd have given this 4 stars if all four hadn't died on me one after the other. The fact that it has to wrap around your ear and occasionally falls out of the ear is annoying, but can be dealt with. And it made a great in-ear headset while it worked. But, alas, it's not headphones, it's monophones.
I wonder if it's always the poor build of one headphone in particular. Or if I'd have kept using them, the other bud would have died as well....more info
  • Awesome
that is what my boyfriend said. I got this as a gift for him and he says he is very happy with it. The price was great and he says the sound quality is a huge improvement from the standard iphone earbuds....more info
  • At this price? It's like you're stealing.
This is a great headset for the iPhone (or whatever phone you are using). I was waiting and waiting for the new in-ear Apple headset to come out...eventually I got tired of waiting (it's there on the website, but not available). I hate Apple earphones anyway. The ear buds that come with ipods are horrible! I've always been an in-ear kind of guy. I want to know my headphones are in my ear and are going to stay there. These do just that. And they are comfortable as hell (or heaven)! I've been on 5-hour plane trips with these in the whole time and I am amazed. Amazed! The sound is great. The microphone is great too (no one says "What?" when I'm talking). The cord is a bit bulky though. It's like heavy duty cord, but that probably means it is made well. And yes, it doesn't have any controls (volume/hang-up), but use the damn phone for that. At this price you are getting a great headset at 1/2 of what those others may charge. And they come with a case too. Enough said....more info
  • I really wanted to like these
They were the right price, and had the features I wanted (1st Gen iPhone compatible, sound leak protection, microphone), and the sound is decent. But they are so bulky and hard to handle, they're impractical for daily use. The ear buds fit snugly but have to be inserted with the cord around the ear, which is awkward to insert & remove. It's almost a two-hand job. The cord is really thick & bulky, which makes them harder to roll up & store, and in cold weather climates it becomes even more stiff and harder to handle than most cords. My search for the perfect iPhone headphones continues . . . ...more info
  • Great phones/Great price
I've always preferred in-ear buds because I'm a bit of an audiophile and they allow me to listen with clarity at lower volume levels.

These buds are great! I got them at the $39 dollar price and wished I would've come across them before I spent on the Bose and V-Moda Vibe Duos. The Shure earbuds do not have the low end frequency response or high end crispness of the others but they are well within acceptable limits.

What impressed me most is that the cable construction is sturdy. Others have complained that the cable is bulky but after being through the previously mentioned products, I'm relieved to see attention given to this aspect of the construction. The Bose set shorted out on the left side and the V-Modas also went out (3 pairs!). The Shure earbuds, with their thicker, better designed cable, are more rugged. Great design!

I agree with other reviewers in that I was disappointed that there was no answer/control button. I wouldn't have used the answer button much but it's important for me to be able to skip songs using the button. No luck here.

The luck appears to be all in the price, durability, and sound (compared to comparably priced buds) and I'm fine with that! ...more info
  • Flaws in design
The quality of the sound is mediocre. The major drawback is that the earbuds are huge and heavy. They keep falling off my ears - I can hardly listen to music/make phone calls with them while I am walking. I had to return them....more info
  • a bit heavy
good sound quality..good mic. The unit is a bit heavy in the ear, but a fine headset...more info
  • My ears are too small!
These Shure earphones are too big for my ears, even with the smallest cushions on them. I also don't like the way they go over my ears. The sound is excellent when I do get them in, and the microphone works well. My wife likes them though, so I let her use them....more info
  • Solid product - Good sound, but inflexible
I like the sound quality of these headphones a great deal. For in-ear buds, they have a good bass response and stay well placed in the ear. I also like the microphone for making audio notes on my iPod Touch.

However, the plastic around the wires is quite stiff and grows brittle with time. I owned a previous model of the same headphones and the plastic eventually split, exposing the wires. With the considerable warranty, however, I am not sure this would be a great issue.

Overall, I think that these headphones are a very solid deal, so long as you do not want to actually use them with your phone - the lack of a call-answer button makes the included microphone relatively useless in that capacity. For use with an MP3 player, though, they produce good quality sound and effectively reduce outside noise....more info
  • Definitely worth the sale price
I bought these hoping for an upgrade to the standard iPhone earbud/microphone set and I would say overall I am pleased. The fit of these Shure earbuds definitely take some getting used to and I found the recommended configuration (with the cord going behind the ear) did not fit me as well as draping the cord straight down from the earbud. The highs are great, lows are decent but could be better, but overall the sound is crisp and clear. I have heard things in songs that I had not heard before with my Sennheiser earbuds and I really liked those, so these are even a step up from Sennheisers. And for $35, I would have to conclude that these are a steal for what you get. Would recommend to friends and family for sure....more info

I have tried all, but I really can't use it because of this.

  • Disappointing
I had high hopes while purchasing this item, Shure is a good brand that makes nice earphones and I was hoping that this would be a decent sounding item since it is based on the acclaimed e2c series drivers.

Having used it for close to 10 hours, I have to say that this disappoints. I have compared the sound to a Grado SR60 and the ubiquitous Sennheiser CX300. The bass is dull, the frequency response dies off around 50Hz, and below 100Hz, I can feel the dullness - the notes are never sharp and are pretty much a booming sound. The extreme high end is also lacking, the notes aren't crisp and I can't distinguish different sounds. What this earphones has going for it is the midrange department, which sadly is just okay. The sound is in my opinion worser than the Sennheiser MX300 which ships as default phones with iriver DAPs.

BTW, though this is advertised as a mobile headset, it does not feature any call end buttons or a mute button. Think of it as a pair of phones with a mic attached. I knew this before purchasing it, so I wasn't taken by surprise. What disappointed me was the audio quality. Maybe these will sound better after being fully burned in - a myth which I don't buy into anyway. For now, the better options if you are looking for a 3.5mm headset with quality sound is the Sennheiser MM50iP or the Shure SE MPA series....more info
  • Clear Sound, Bad Everything Else.
The best thing about these headphones is that you can hear most of the sounds that each song you listen to is made up of. The bad things are that the headphones hurt the ear canal and there is virtually no bass. Even after I made a tight fit between my ears and the headphones, there was no bass to speak of. People who don't like bass, these are the headphones for you; they are clear and have a microphone....more info
