For the person who needs access to their digital content away from home, at work, or online, while also allowing that same content to be shared in a secure setting, look no further than the Seagate Free Agent Pro Portable Hard Drive. This powerful portable hard drive delivers high-speed transfers, while also giving you the ability to share content with others safely and securely from a remote location or even online.

Powerful storage device with a sleek new design.

This hip-looking hard drive takes up less room on your desk than an ordinary stapler.

Share your content with others safely and securely.
With up to 1 Terabyte and an ultra-slim design for a clutter-free desktop, your FreeAgent Pro external hard drive helps keep you safe from goof-ups by automatically saving new versions of your content that you can easily access if need be. And should something happen to your PC, you can roll back your Windows operating system, settings, and applications to a point in time when they ran smoother, like before a virus attack. Even though the system settings are taken back in time, updates to photos, music and critical data files are kept current.

The Free Agent Pro is also ideal for those who want quick and painless transfers of their data from their computer to their drive, and from their drive to online accounts (such as Shutterfly or email). Simply plug it in to any power source and connect the USB cable to any computer, and you're ready to go. This hip-looking hard drive takes up less room on your desk than an ordinary stapler--1 x 3 x 5.2 inches (H x D x W)-- giving you more space for your other desktop items. Meanwhile, the hard drive only measures 7.5 x 1.4 x 6.3-inches (H x D x W) and it matches its small base.

High Speed Synchronization and Sharing
The Free Agent Pro data mover automatically duplicates and moves selected content from your hard drive to multiple locations, such as copying your contact lists and emails to your iPod, or photos to a Shutterfly account. This feature also allows you to move your entire 'My Documents' folder to the Free Agent, or move it to your own online space where you (or others you choose) can access it from any browser 24/7. The Free Agent software also offers the feature of rolling back your system to better time if something should happen to your PC while automatic revisions of your content help keep you safe from goof-ups.

Move files or other content with either USB 2.0/eSATA/FireWire 400 allowing a maximum transfer rate of 480Mb/sec for USB, and 3Gb/sec for eSATA, while delivering a high performance spindle speed of 7,200 RPM. The unit also comes with a sophisticated touch point power on/off switch.

The Free Agent Pro software and drive formatting works only with Windows, but the drive can easily be reformatted for a Mac with OS X's Disk Utility. This portable hard drive is also compatible with Windows Vista (as well as Windows XP and Windows 2000), allowing you to backup your content regardless of operating system upgrades. A five-year warranty is also included, giving you complete peace of mind. Now with the ability to take your data with you anywhere you go, your digital content finally has room to breathe.

Customer Reviews:

  • Seagate Free Agent Pro 1TB Firewire
The Seagate Freeagent Pro 1TB unit was delivered before expected and performs as advertised using Firewire in a 3 unit daisy chain configuration. I use it exclusively as a backup disk for HD video and RAW format digital pictures (25,000+). These type of files take alot of space so 1TB may not last too long. The backup software that comes with the unit, Memeo AutoBackup, performs perfectly for the described configuration. The backup software is configured to automatically backup multiple locations where it automatically moves a copy when new files are added or a change is made to an existing file. I keep up to two copies of changes but if you desire, that can be increased. By the way, if you make adjustments to a RAW file, this counts as a change. Speed seems adequate but is more or less transparent after the initial copy because all backup operations are fully automatic. I highly recommend this drive. ...more info
  • Superfast shipping + As ordered
Real fast shipping, and great product overall. Only use if you are comfortable with an external power (not USB) supply....more info
  • Seagate as a network drive
Seagate ST310005FPA1E3-RK Freeagent Pro 1 TB 3.5-Inch USB 2.0/FireWire 400 External Hard Drive

I bought the Freeagent Pro 1 TB for use as a network backup drive connected to my Linksys router [WRT600N]. With three computers on a home network, a centralized backup was desired using Norton 360.

The drive works just fine for my purposes but not with Seagate software support. Seagate does not support my configuration but I was able to create backup folders for each computer through the Linksys router software and it works great. If direct management of the drive is necessary, I will have to hook up directly with one of the network computers.

If you are into looks, this unit will add class to your setup, no doubt. Runs cool with no excessive heat. Highly recommeded with some reservation about Seagate not supporting a router direct connect configuration.

  • Fast and Safe
This drive performs very well, it's fast, doesn't overload YOU with required software (interfacing software is optional), and a well planned physical footprint have made this my new favorite. Additionally it is nearly physically tamper proof - you will destroy the housing if you attempt entry (we tried). One drawback I ran into was difficulty in using certian (will not name) wipe software to completely remove all data. This could have been due to a compatability problem with external drives or a problem performing the wipes over the interface i was using (USB instead of firewire or ESATA). All around this is an awesome external drive that you can use to perform real-time backups, scheduled backups, or even store your music and movie collection. I am very satisfied....more info
  • Don't buy this (or any drive standing upright)!
A gentle pull on the cable knocked my drive over and it was dead... I am thinking to cut my losses and NOT take the warranty, because what is backup worth, if it's that sensitive....more info
  • Working like a Charm - Great External Drive
I love my Seagate. This is my second Seagate external hardrive. The first one i bought is "Seagate 300 GB 3.5" External SATA Hard Drive." Still use it for my files but i needed more space. The only gripe i have with the 300g is holding the on/off button extra hard to get it to start. After that, it's working like a charm.

After tons of research between different brands, I decided to go with a brand that hasn't failed me yet. I needed more space and went for the 1TB Seagate. It has a nice shape; small, thin & slender, lightweight and it glows (organge light). My only gripe with this one again, is the power button; it really doesn't have an on/off button. I'm not sure why Seagate inventors would do something like that. They made the button as a touch sensitivity but with no sensitivity. This is the biggest downfall.

It comes with the features advertised - firewire & usb cord; no manual since the software is install on the cd. Their is backup availability, but i don't use that. I don't use firewire so i cannot make a comment on that. Saving with the usb is fast for me and easy, lag time is expected since i'm moving thousand of files at once. I would recommend a user to read the reviews and to do their own experiments to test out the transfer rate since it varies by person.

I have vista so my pc didn't have a problem recognizing the drive, once i got it on. I'm downloading stuff like crazy and saving all my cds as mp3s.

I'm not giving it a 5 because of the on/off button and because i just got it. But i do recommend seagate as the brand to go; i had 2 so far and no issues....more info
  • Does its job quickly and efficiently, but included software a no-go on 64-bit OS.
I bought this device to back up my growing media collection, and the 1 TB capacity and FireWire 400 capability add to the attractiveness of this solution. Backups (unfortunately via the awful Windows Backup) are fast enough, and restores were expedient and complete. The richly featured backup software included with the product bombs on 64-bit Vista, and Seagate support confirms this as a problem with no current workaround. Too bad, but I'll manage without - will look for a freeware solution soon....more info
  • Lasted only a coulple of weeks
The hard disk failed after a couple of weeks. I bought it from Chile, there is no local Seagate warranty. It was a total loss for me....more info
  • Mac Users BEWARE!!
There are several things about this drive that make it difficult to configure for Mac to begin with, but even after that is resolved, the drive continues to be unstable and becomes corrupted over and over.

I have this 1tb FreeAgent Pro drive with my PowerMac G5 dual core desktop, running Mac OS 10.4.11. There was insufficient warning in the reviews for use of this drive with the Mac OS online, but there are many, many complaints about this drive on the Seagate website, with many problems going unanswered and unsresolved by Seagate.

First, for a drive that's suggested to be "plug and play" compatible with Macs, this drive has problems with its sleep function that, for many Mac users, has had to be resolved by configuring the drive on a Windows machine to re-set the automatic sleep routine built into the drive. Fortunately, there's a more recent fix from Seagate with updated drive software that allows it to work without suddenly going into sleep mode after a minute or two. It really did that until I installed the updated software from Seagate! I have several internal drives matched up with no-name enclosures that work just fine out of the box. This is ridiculous.

The second, and by far biggest complaint, is that the drive is very easily corrupted during normal operation. I access it only occasionally to store or backup files, but about every ten days, one or more of the volumes on the drive becomes corrupted, and can not be repaired by Disk Utility. Disk Utility can recognize the drive itself and I can reformat it, but in the process I lose all of my stored data. If you search the phrase "The underlying task reported failure on exit" on the Seagate website you'll see examples of other Mac Users with the same problem, problems that go unanswered by the Seagate techs who monitor the forum.

My basic recommendation is to pass on this one, and be sure to Google for reviews on any other Seagate or Maxtor product for use with the Mac OS. As someone wrote, Seagate had a reputation for reliable hardware, but no more.

  • Great Price, Great Product
I have been using this hard drive for about a year now. It has worked great. My only complaint it that is can be a little slow sometimes... but for the price I can't complain....more info
  • Best External Hard Drive
This has been the best Hard Drive I have ever had. It is perfectly reliable, very sleek looking and has many features. I would recommend this drive to anyone wishing to expand their media library or use on-the-go. It is very small and weighs less than 2 lbs. The 5 year warranty is also a major plus in my book too....more info
  • Cut corners on interface
Everything looks great about this drive except the interface, as I just found out. I've been a Maxtor OneTouch guy for 4 years, which has a great USB/FireWire interface. But this FreeAgentPro cut important corners. It has a 4 pin and a 6 pin FireWire ports, and eSATA and USB ports. It comes with a 6 pin to 4 pin FireWire cable, so you have to hook it up that way. When I tried to daisy chain a portable FireWire drive into the 6-pin port, it turns out that the two power pins are not connected, so the drive can't be powered through the FireWire port. So, I had to move the LaCie Rugged drive to the Mac Mini's FireWire port, and attach the FreeAgentPro through a USB cable. For maximum performance I like to stay FireWire all the way, but the FreeAgentPro's interface prevents this here. Also, the power switch doesn't work --- it's just a place on the plastic case, not a switch. I would have stuck with Maxtor except the last one I bought, now made by Seagate, had a drive that crashed. Thank goodness I got it through Costco with their return policy....more info
  • What are you smoking?
This is a great drive with an unbeatable warranty. I use pairs of them to do alternating backups over our Macintosh gigabit ether network. These drives perform outstandingly and, should a drive fail (face it, sooner or later, they all fail), Seagate replaces it with a brand new one, no questions asked, for 5 years. That's what I call a win-win deal....more info
  • power button problem
I'm confusing how its power button works. Sometimes it does, sometimes not. However, it took me 30 minutes to find out where is this button located....more info
  • Knocked over (low impact) and now doesn't work
Like some other person that left feedback, I knocked over my seagate and now it won't work. The base is unstable and easily tips over if bumped. For something that's supposed to protect your files, you'd think they wouldn't make it so sensitive. This drive is a piece of crap and now I'm going to have to pay to have the files retrieved, assuming they are even retrievable.
Don't recommend this drive at all....more info
  • Unlucky twice
I ordered this drive to recover data from another drive that had gone bad. I partitioned it into 3 partitions and recouped some of the lost data off my bad drive. Two days later, two of the partitions failed. I ordered a replacement and the same thing happened with the replacement! I partitioned it into 3, all seemed fine for a few days, then two of the partitioned failed. I called Seagate tech support. We could find no explanation for what had happened. I returned both drives. I need a replacement now, but it will NOT be a Seagate....more info
  • No Stars Would Be More Accurate
What a piece of crap! Poorly designed on/off button. The designers of this product should be canned. Returned it within days. I had to unplug the power cord and re-plug to turn it on. Took up to much space as well. Avoid this paper-weight....more info
  • great, but with one big exception
Purchased this particular drive for two reasons: capacity and eSATA interface. Capacity will serve me for a long time. However, upon installation Windows did not detect the drive using the eSATA to eSATA cable I purchased separately from SATACABLES.com. Works super using USB, albeit transfer rate is much slower, of course. Why settle for advertised USB 480MB vs eSATA 3GB transfer rate? Exhausted Seagate knowledge base attempting to resolve my eSATA detection problem - no help.
Sleek, attractive unit, small footprint, very quiet. Have to place hand on drive to determine it's operating.
The drive runs slightly warm, but not hot like I've heard from other users. Tip: external cooling comes from placing the drive next to my ATX case side fan. Another reason may be because this drive is the latest generation FreeAgent Pro series, series 11 I believe.
Also heard complaints about the on/off button when I read user product reviews. Granted the switch is a bit tricky, one having to use patience (tapping top of head while rubbing belly), but I experienced little trouble turning on/off. After the first day I decided to leave it on cuz I don't shutdown my system anyway (schedule all backups, software updates, malware scans at night). That being said, initial data backup from all my internal drives took awhile. Subsequent backup times aren't an issue since I'm sleeping, so what the heck.
The owner's manual is sparse. However, once hooked up, Windows recognized the drive (USB in my case), the drive preinstalled software wizard easily steps you through the setup procedures.
Setting up the Memeo AutoBackup function was a no-brainer. All backups are performed reliably each night.
I welcome feedback from any respondents who have a solution to my eSATA detection trouble. Even tried a friend's eSATA cable in case mine was defective - no go. But I haven't tried hooking up my drive to my friend's system. Supposed it's possible my mobo eSATA port is inoperable.
If it weren't for having to settle for USB vs eSATA, I would have rated this drive 5 stars. And the purchase price was attractive for 1TB capacity....more info
  • "The Worst Model for Macs"!!!
I've had numerous Disk Utility failures with what is now my second Seagate drive. They've already replaced the first one, as it screwed up everytime I'd loaded data onto it. I called again today, since I've been having the sleep/waking issues, and only now has one of their (more competent. more honest?) technicians told me "this is the absolute worst unit for Macs, they have"!!!

Well, that's great news to hear! I asked, why if they know that, didn't they just send me a different, more Mac-compatible model, to replace the first drive, instead of one they KNOW is going to have issues??? This is something they easily could've done (if not a total recall, the ethical thing to do), and thus had another satisfied customer, and one who will buy more of their products in the future. Instead, they have one frustrated, ticked-off one, and not only will they see no future purchases, but he will warn others to stay away.....

When will companies learn the value (to them) of good, ethical, customer service?...more info

Must be re-formated for OSX....more info
  • Be Careful
I have had nothing but problems with this 1 tb drive which is unusual since I own several smaller ones. This is my second exchange both had different problems the first made a grinding noise when I plugged it in, dead disk The second one worked fine for a while and when I had it filled, the drive turned into a RAW drive and my data was lost. it was also making a clicking sound and freezing my system. I checked to make sure it was not my system, computer etc but all other externals worked fine. (e sata and Firewire)
I do not want to worry about my backups, I'm going to get a better drive and put it into an esata case. You get what you pay for, this is junk....more info
  • DON'T BUY
I got a terabyte seagate hard drive about 3 months ago to back up my two old hard drive in case they crashed. My seagate was going great and i put 800 gigs of video on it. Then it crashed. Don't recommend buying. I was originally hesitant because i had never heard of the company, seems like i was right. I recommend going with a well known brand like western digital....more info
