  • Civ Rev for Nintendo DS
If you like the Civilization computer game series, you will probably enjoy this "simplified" version for the DS

Pros: Easy to learn, fun to play.

    Cons: Weak computer AI...more info
  • I love this game!!!
It was very hard for me to find this game in stores - sold out everywhere. Got lucky and happened to be in the store when someone returned a copy because he also has it for PSP.

I love this game. It's easy to learn and I can just sit in bed and play people off of my wireless network.

One downside - I've been up til 1 AM for the last few nights!!!

  • Fantastic Adaptation of Civ to the DS
Okay, I won't beat around the bush: this is by far my favorite DS game of all times. I was a fan of Civ on the computer way back when the first version came out. For whatever reason I haven't played any of the subsequent ones though. Well, the Civ Revolution rekindled the magic and I haven't been able to put my DS down for weeks since getting it. I play until my batteries die or the wife hassles me enough to make me stop. Controls are an excellent mix of stylus and buttons, graphics are great for the style of game, and gameplay is excellent. This one gives me great hopes for the kind of games its possible to bring to the DS in the future! ...more info
  • First time playing
This is the first time I have played a civ game and I love it. It took me a few games to get used to it but once I did its been fun. This is also the first turn-based game Ive ever been able to play without getting to frusterated. I agree with a few of the other posts that the graphics are not what the ds is capable of but its stil a fun game overall. I just wish the games were longer....more info
  • Civ still rocks, even on the small screen!
As a long time Civ player (all the way back to Civ I), I can say that this title is indeed the true Civ experience. Everything you loved about the original seems to be here and it is greatly simplified. It has to be simplified really as the DS system is not as capable as a full blown PC is. The maps seem a tad small to me, meaning you bump into other civilizations faster than you might otherwise, but overall the look and feel of Civ is in there. This will be great for people who love Civ4 and travel a lot, or simply just want to relax in the back yard and test their empire building skills. Well done Sid Meier!...more info
  • GREAT game
This game is great! My brother and I (teenagers) constantly argue over who gets to play it, and I am purchasing it right now for myself so that I can crush him in multiplayer (lol). In fact, just this weekend, we went on vacation and my uncle's girlfriend started playing it. She doesn't even own a DS but started to play it when my brother showed her how. She said, '"I could sit here and play this for hours"' to my uncle. She was quite engrossed after that, and I'm surprised the game made it home.

Civilizations allows you to choose between quite a few different leaders and their civilization (for example, Cleopatra and the Egyptians, Lincoln and the Americans, Montezuma and the Aztecs, etc.). You can win by many different strategies. If you're the kind of person that would like to conquer the enemy, build tons of units and capture the enemies' palaces for a Domination victory. Or, if you'd rather sit back and win more peacefully, you can win a Technology Victory (research all of the technologies possible and launch a space ship), Economic Victory (have 20,000 gold in your treasury and buid the World Bank Wonder), or a Cultural Victory (amass 20 wonders, and/or people).

I highly recommend this game to everyone. It is well worth the money, although its graphics aren't the best (Who cares? It's a DS game!)....more info
  • doesn't live up to the legacy
(I'm most familiar with Civ1 and Civ2 for PC, and have not played much Civ3 or Civ4. I review from this perspective.)

Civilization Revolutions is designed to be a quick and light turn-based strategy game. It aims to be a stripped down version of the PC smash hit "Civilizations". It's an ambitious goal; how do you remove half a masterpiece, and will it be a great game (or at least a worthwhile game) if you do? As tricky as this goal is, it can be done. (See the board game Puerto Rico and it's stripped down version San Juan.) Unfortunately, Civilization Revolutions misses the mark and strips away most of the fun, too.

It's difficult to pin down why this game fails. Several of the simplifications seem like good ideas. For example, in the original PC game, you had to painstakingly build roads by hand on every square where you wanted a road. Now, you can simply buy a road between two cities in 1 turn and be done with it. The courthouse makes a lot more sense. It used to reduce corruption (at least in early Civ variants), but corruption has been eliminated and now a courthouse expands the usable territory for a given city. Instead of allocating individual citizens to specific territory to harvest, you set an overarching tilt (e.g. more production, more science, more food, more cash, or a balance). There's also an interesting element with "great people" who can join your civilization if you lure them with culture. Despite these and many smaller improvements, it's just not a very fun game.

I wanted to like this game, and have played 3 games through to completion, but will now be putting it down.

This game is both harmed by and harms the name Civilization. If it hadn't been linked to that excellent brand, and if it hadn't needed to be as close to Civilization as possible, it might have done better. It's not awful, and I might play it again if I run out of other worthwhile games (unlikely). Moreover, the designers are clearly "cashing in" or "selling out" on the Civilization brand by putting out a mediocre game with that name and charging a premium for it. I will be more wary of purchasing the next Civilization product. It might have felt like a better game at $20 rather than $30.

Bottom line: if you enjoy turn-based strategy, either of the 2 Advanced Wars titles for DS is a better choice....more info
  • Civ Condensed
As expected this is a nice condensed version of one the longest running strategy games the PC world has seen. It is fun and engaging but the Diplomatic aspect of Civ that some may enjoy is not quite as robust in this but it is a nice diversion and an enjoyable fun for a short time....more info
  • Conquer the world while you're just sitting in the doctor's office
This game is suited better for teens and adults. The concept of the game involves starting off with a colony and trying to accomplish one of three things (they can be concurrent): Conquering 4 Capital Cities (Domination), Achieving Technological Advances (Technological), Economic milestones, or Creating the Wonders of the World (Cultural). As you can probably guess, it is easier to conquer a city than doing the latter two (as you try to defend yourself from would be encroachers).

There are three modes, online play, pre-planned scenarios or just a random civilization from 'scratch'. Graphics are relatively simple, as are the sound effects. This is not going to wow you by those senses but the game will.

There are many different options on how to manage your civilization, through building Wonders of the World, various buildings that facilitate your objectives, concentrating on production/gold/science/food, and creating alliances or war.

The game is simple given that it is just on a handheld console, but it is still compelling and rather addicting. You can create legions of warriors, archers, horsemen, colonists, battleships, destroyers, aircraft and even an atomic bomb (which I did not use in the coup de gras of the last colony that I had to conquer for world domination). Your citizens have various tasks where you can defend, battle, escort traders, or utilization of air/naval firepower to carry out various objectives.

Your role can be undertaken with various historical characters such as Gandhi, Napolean, Alexander the Great, Queen Isabella, Julius Caesar, Mao Tse Dong, Abraham Lincoln, Otto Van Bismarck, and others. Each leader and civilization will start with their own historical attributes. It is ironic that I used Gandhi to develop technology which I then turn to create weapons of war. I lost more often when I concentrated on just creating citizens to colonize various outposts/cities. Overall, it takes a balance of strategies to succeed. You create alliances and break them, as you wish.

You have the option of listening to your advisers. There are milestones that your civilization accomplishes over time, such as starting from despotism to a republic to feudalism to a monarchy to a democracy. I personally found it was easier to stay a republic to wage war on my neighbors, rather than adopt a democracy.

Overall, this is a simple game with a complex strategy that is both entertaining and has a high replay value. For those people who are looking to get more detail, they should stick with the conventional computers or high end consoles. However, for a handheld system, this title holds its on in the genre of strategy games.

It is definitely worth a try.

  • Can a horseman really defeat a bomber plane?
Answer no. Or so you would think. However in Civilization Revolution it can for some unknown reason. I find this single aspect to be the most frustrating since it has zero basis in any form of common sense. I mean, come on? How propsterous is that no matter what the context? The game has simple graphics and simple gameplay and can entertain, but for any semi-serious gamer the game ends too early with a ridiculous time limit and the AI seems to cheat. But it travels well and can frustrate you on the go, but you'll keep coming back to it anyways. If you liked other civilization games you'll still like this one and I do enjoy it despite its flaws. Overall conclusion the pros outweigh the cons although not by much....more info
