Product Description

The successor to the popular MDA Smartphone, the T-Mobile Wing quad-band phone has a surprise waiting up its sleeve: just slide the top of the phone sideways to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard. It's especially handy with the inclusion of the new Windows Mobile 6 operating system, which enables you to view and edit Word and Excel documents as well as provides instant message capabilities via Windows Live Messenger. (See more details about Windows Mobile 6 below.) The included Outlook Mobile software offers up-to-date e-mail, calendar and contact information. If you use the T-Mobile Wing in conjunction with Microsoft Exchange Server, you can get instant e-mail from your work account as well as enhanced security features that let you clear data from a device if it is stolen or require high-security passwords to access information.

The T-Mobile slides open sideways to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard, and the screen reorients itself depending on how you hold the phone.

Click the image to view a larger version of the keyboard.

The T-Mobile Wing has a sleek profile that measures just 17mm (0.7 inches) thick, and it weighs a svelte 6 ounces (with battery loaded). The 2.8-inch color touchscreen transreflective TFT screen automatically orients itself depending on how you hold the phone (i.e., from portrait to landscape and back again). It displays 65,000 colors and has a 320 x 240-pixel resolution. You can scroll through onscreen functions with a pen or finger, or you can use the function buttons placed on the front of the phone.

In addition to supporting GSM/GPRS and EDGE, the Wing also features Wi-Fi (802.11b/g), which enables you to use open wireless networks (as well as T-Mobile's more than 8,000 HotSpot locations) to access the Internet as well as access all four major instant messaging providers--AOL, Yahoo!, Windows Live Messenger, and ICQ. With the Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity, you can go hands-free with a headset or listen to music with wireless-enabled headphones.

The phone offers 128 MB of ROM (which stores the Windows Mobile 6 operating system and applications) and 64 MB of RAM (which can be used to store user files). It's powered by a 1130 mAh lithium-ion polymer rechargeable battery, which offers between 150 and 200 hours of standby time and 3 to 5 hours of talk time.

A small mirror next to the 2-megapixel lens on the back is handy for taking self portraits..
The 2-megapixel autofocus camera (with 10x digitazl zoom) on the back of the Wing captures images up to 1600 x 1200 pixels (good enough for prints up to 8 x 10 inches), and it includes a small mirror to the left of the lens that's helpful for taking self portraits. You can make such camera adjustments as white balance and exposure metering, choose from several capture modes (such as sports for fast-moving action), or set a self-timer of either 2 or 10 seconds. After an image has been captured, you can edit it right within the Wing, with functions ranging from cropping to correcting color.

Additionally, the Wing can capture video with or without audio (in MPEG-4 or H.263 format, the latter being best for sending via MMS). In addition to starting and stopping video capture at your leisure, you can also specifiy the length of a recording in terms of ime or file size. You can also play back audio and video files downloaded from the Internet or sent to you via email using the integrated Windows Media Player.

Powered by Windows Mobile 6

Windows Mobile 6 adds power to your mobile office with up-to-date e-mail delivery and automatic synchronization of Outlook calendars.

Edit Word documents and Excel spreadsheets on your phone, just as you would on your desktop/laptop PC.
Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6 updates the Windows Mobile 5 platform with a number of handy features that make searching through email, editing Microsoft Office documents, and staying on top of your most important communications even easier. Emails can now be viewed in their original rich HTML format and now offer the ability to visit embedded links. It also includes Windows Live for Windows Mobile, which provides a full set of Windows Live services, such as the Windows Live Messenger IM application, which now enables you to chat with more than one person at one time or send a file.

With Windows Mobile 6, your phone will finally be able to emulate the power and features of your PC's Microsoft Office suite. You'll be able to neatly view, navigate and edit Word documents and Excel spreadsheets in their original formatting--without affecting tables, images or text--as well as view PowerPoint presentations.

  • Microsoft Office Word Mobile features include spell-check, Find and Replace commands, bulleted lists, text formatting, and support for tables for the first time.
  • With Excel Mobile, you're not just confined to editing charts: with the new Chart Wizard you can create charts quickly and easily.
  • PowerPoint Mobile allows you to view the full presentation, rehearse timings, check the order and any live links you may have in your presentation. You can then email comments back to the team or communicate via MSN Messenger for an immediate response.
  • After creating or editing a Word document or Excel spreadsheet, you can synchronize it with your PC and it will automatically be converted to the PC version.

All Windows Mobile 6 powered devices include Direct Push Technology for up-to-date e-mail delivery and automatic synchronization of Outlook calendars, tasks and contacts through Microsoft Exchange Server. It also offers a set of important device security and management features that include the capability to remotely wipe all data from a device should it be lost or stolen, helping ensure that confidential information remains that way. The HTC P4350 uses an 1130 mAh Polymer battery for its energy. This high capacity battery offers a standby time of 150 hours and a call time of 3 hours, according to the manufacturer.

Stay connected with the T-Mobile Wing, a powerful phone with a touch screen and slide out keyboard that lets you take the strength of your desktop with you.

Customer Reviews:

  • Burned by T-Mobile, dishonest lying company!!!
This is not a review for the phone which is probably great. This is a rant about T-Mobile. T-Mobile had lied to me when I was going to the Carribean with my Black Berry. The Representative had told me that I would be charged according to the data used and instead signed me up for BB International Roaming, which is $19.99. The service had never worked, I wasn't able to recieve or send email, but this is not what this is about. Four months later I had opened a bill, which I usually don't do since the bill is paid automatically every month, and discovered that I am being charged $19.99 for the past 4 months. Manager at T-Mobile insisted that there's nothing that they can do regardless of the fact that I am being charged for the service that never been used. The Manager (Walter) did not even attempt to accomodate me in any way, no partial credit offer, not even for one month, not even free text messages for next month.
T-Mobile is out there to take advantage of you. They take no responsibility for lying to their customers and charging them for services not provided.

  • The best Pocket PC for your buck
At the time of purchase I had done my research, and for my specific use T-Mobile was the best deal for total data and voice. I have the 1000 my-faves plan with complete data add-on with a few extra features and it's 112 dollars a month. It's for business, and it works quite swell. There's a few issues I had with this phone at first, but they were quickly resolved.

    1. At first, like everyone else, my camera wouldn't want to start up because of low memory. One thing I found that really helped was to delete the temporary files from Internet Explorer. Also, get a microSD card to store your pictures on.

    2. The phone got very slow after about 3 months of use. It was doing funky stuff and just being slow in general. I always sync my phone with Outlook for my contacts/calendar/tasks so I just did a hard reset on the phone. Start>Settings>System>Clear Storage. Make sure you have your contacts and other important files backed up before you do a hard reset. Once you clear storage the phone operates so much faster. Everything loads quick, and overall the phone is just really fast.

    3. Extra Apps: After doing a hard reset, it's best to install all additional applications on your memory card. I use a 512mb microSD and I've got about 10 extra apps and 200 2M pictures on there.

    4. The best thing about this phone is the wifi connectivity. It's so simple to connect and it even has support for WPA2 now.

    5. Stay updated with Windows Updates. The Office Mobile updates were free and now I have Office Mobile 2007 on the phone.

That's pretty much it. I really like the phone, and this thing has taken some serious abuse. I've dropped it probably 50+ times and nothing has happened. It's scratched, scraped, dented, paint chipped, and stained but the darn thing keeps running.

I'd like to upgrade to a newer Pocket PC probably within a year just to keep up to date and maybe the new Pocket PC OS will be out then. Overall, I gave this phone a 5 out of 5 because it deserved it. You have to be a little tech savvy to truly operate and effectively use this phone. I'm a tech nerd, and it works perfect in every way it's meant to be....more info
  • An excellent phone
I upgraded from an older pocket pc phone (SX66) and I'm quite impressed with the Wing. Windows Mobile 6 is a giant improvement over what I was using - pocket PC 2003. You might consider dividing the gripes about this phone into two categories - tmobile gripes, and gripes about the phone and windows. I think the gripes about TMobile are pretty justified - coverage is spotty, and the cellular data speeds are slow. But hey, I've got a $30/month plan, and I don't really need cellular internet, I just use wifi spots when traveling. Also, to note is that you can easily unlock these phones and use them with other GSM carriers.
But I love these phones for music, windows office compatibility, videos, and wifi.
If you just look at the phone itself, it is a great device. The sliding keyboard is excellent, easy to use, and it doesn't feel cheap at all, I don't even know what some of the reviewers are talking about there... I think this is one of the sturdier devices I've handled. The Windows OS is much much better, and it's actually a lot more friendly in the context of a phone. You can dial speed dials one-handed, you can dial your contacts one-handed with a few more menus to go thru, and of course there is voice recognition. You can get an 8 GB microSD card now, so you can store tons of stuff. You've got the 2 megapixel camera, which is executed nicely, and you can take videos too. I haven't gotten to use the MS office apps yet, but I presume they are functional. Basically, I think the device itself is top-notch. All the complaints revolve around TMobile, or GSM networks in general. You'll have the same kinds of problems with iphones, etc. But you can use your phone in Europe. For what it's worth.
I really like the tactile feel of the Wing, it feels really nice. And it won't slip out of your hands, it's got a nice tacky feel. ...more info
  • Windows 6 is too slow on this device
This device doesn't have enough resource to run Windows Pocket 6.0 properly.

You end up restarting your phone like 10 times a day. If you have more than 100 contacts and receiving 25 or more email a day then this device is not for you. Exchange sync keeps failing most of the times, and almost every time you run 2 applications at the same time phone fails and requires restart.

The device itself is kind of heavy but it has a good design. I like the color. It has a poor battery life.

I switched to Blackberry 8820, and I am pretty happy now.

  • Totally Unusable
At the time of writing this, I have had my t-mobile wing for three months. In the span of those three months, my t-mobile wing has become completely unusable.

At this point, if I had to call 911, it would probably take me about 5 minutes of either waiting for the phone to actually go to the phone application, or 10 minutes if I got impatient after waiting two minutes and decided to turn the phone on and off in hopes that the phone will somehow decide to work.

This is coming from a techno geek who thought it would be cool to have the latest and best phone. I even read the manual, and have never dropped it once.

Did you ever wonder if one day technology would go too far and make a phone that was too complex, to the point of being unusable?

This is that phone. Never again will I buy a smartphone, I'll just stick to the 19.99 ones, because after this all I care about is having a phone that works....more info
  • I go between loving the wing and occassionally wanting to throw it out the window
With T-Mobile's unlimited internet, I'am able to skip outlook synching because I can access my workmail via webmail- I love that (i'm not sure why this feature turns me on!). The complete internet plan is much more affordable than what I had with Cingular. That said, T-Mobile's coverage and speed is not as good. But since this is a review on the Wing, I'll progress. Windows 6 is very user friendly. My previous phone that was 2 years old was lighter, but I had to consistenly pull out the owner's manual for info. With win6, if you can use windows on a PC, then you can use about 80% of this phone's features- gotta appreciate simplicity. So it's more user friendly. I love the MS office with adobe that comes pre-installed. I can really utilize docs, excell, pdfs very easily. The voice quality is neither better nor worst than before. I like the internet sharing, but if there's wifi, I will use my laptop instead of sharing. The tmobile GPRS/Edge is slower than my granny on her scooter, but at least it goes further. When using the camera, images show up awesome on this large screen, but click to take a picture and things show up yellowish-orange. My biggest gripe is the memory on the phone. I conistently get, not enough memory errors but there's no other program running. I've had to disable voice activation and many other features. It helps a bit, but not much. I added a 2gb storage card that's tiny. So if I can get 2gb of memory in a storage card for under $30, why couldn't they have increased the memory? There are too many features in this action packed phone, or pocket PC if you will, that are frustrating at times to use because of the low memory. The Windows Music player is a nice feature, altho I could do without the instant messaging (it's a phone, if I want to reach someone, I'll call). The battery life is adequate, but nothing to scream about. It looks like this phone is geared towards the young professional under 30 crowd. It's got lots of flash, but sometimes it doesn't shine too brightly. A co-worker has a Motorola Q with Verizon and is impressed with the Wing's features. So this phone is up there with the other big players. But, I just wish it had better internal memory. It's not worth the $449 list price. If you can get your hands on one for under $200, then the archaic processor might be a bit easier to deal with. But once again, if I had paid $449.00 for it, I would give it two stars. At the price I got it for, I have to give it 4! I got mine at myrateplandotcom for $49.00 with a two year contract. ***update*** I've had this phone for a few more months now and I actually am starting to like this little sucker quite a bit more. I find myself leaving my iPod at home and loading lots of music on here. I've started utilizing the note capability for everything from grocery lists to work to do lists. The calender and alarms have done wonders for helping me get more organized. I still find the processor to be annoying and T-Mobile's coverage is not the best. But all in all, I'm happy with it. ...more info
  • Worst Cell Phone Experience I've Ever Had!
Don't know if the problem is the phone itself, the T-Mobile network or both, but this has been the worst phone I've ever had and I can hardly wait until the contract is up to get rid of it. It's so bad, I dread using it and use it only when I absolutely have to. I am puzzled how anyone can even say that it is "alright". I rate it as a 0.

I have had to send in two phones for replacement due to malfunctions. Along with mine, I also bought one for my wife. She has had to send it back once due to malfunctions. I'm only hoping it will limp along so I don't have to send it in again, even though I am not getting the service for which I contracted with T-Mobile.

I bought this phone over a year ago as a business phone based on very positive reviews, but it's unreliability has especially been a disappointment for that particular usage.
    1. I frequently get voice messages a day or two late after the phone has not rung at the time the message was dated. This could and probably has lost business opportunities for me.
    2. I frequently get dropped connections on business calls, sometimes 3 times during one discussion. These are so numerous that it is embarrassing. The dropped connections have improved of late, but still occur. This happens in various locations.
    3. The connection to the web is unreliable and I sometimes have to remove the battery and sim and restart the phone to get a connection.
    4. The keys are small and the multifunction keys are difficult to use. 5. It is frequently difficult to end a call, especially to retrieve voicemail, and also sometimes requires battery and sim removal and reboot.
    6. I have had notes and contacts simply disappear.
    7. The finish on the phone is flaking off.
    8. It gives me a summary of my emails with text that states I will get the full version when I connect again but fails to do so on reconnection.

So I have gotten nothing but frustration from this purchase.
I have called T-mobile support time and again only to be told to do various things that have only helped one time. I don't even call anymore.

My advice is to buy just about any other phone from any other service. ...more info
  • the great wing
well i had this phone ever since they introduced it from tmobile for $400...it was a lot of money for what you got...but i love the touch screen...but it was slow...and sometimes to click on something you didnt mean to click on...and then you gotta wait till that loads to exit it...its lined out just like a computer which i love...but the office and word mobile is hard to understand..and i tried to put my aim screen name on it...and it never worked...so i just gave up....the price of internet for it was outragious so i canceled that...but when i had it...i was in love with it...each page came out just like a regular computer page...hard to understand out to use it first...but you get used to it after awhile...i love this phone...but when you first drop it...the lcd screen breaks...so i hadda replace that...and that cost me $90 and plus my dad fixing it...made all the movements horrible...and i put insurance on the phone on my phone number...but stupid tmobile said it was on my moms phone plan...and that was a mistake...i told them put it on the 0742 but they put it on the 0739...and they couldnt do anything about it...even though it was all their fault!!...and my mom has a free phone from tmobile and i have the most expensive so why would they think to put it on the crappy one??? they are just money grabbers...and wasted all of those months i hadda pay insurance for a crappy phone i didnt even use...and yet my mom never paid me back...so yea...this phone is great...but i still dont think it is worth the money...never drop it...it gets scratches, dings, and breaks very easily...so be careful if you are going to get this phone...i wish it came in different colors..but this is a nice settled color i guess...bye...more info
  • Great promise -- failed delivery.
I was really excited to buy this phone, but after 5 months of frustration in trying to get it to work with my Dot Mac account, I am exchanging it for a Curve. I spent 45 minutes at the store a month ago with a T-Mobile representative who valiantly tried to make it work. Yesterday I spent 2 hours on the phone with yet another T-Mobile representative who went to great lengths to try and make it work with my Dot Mac. Sure, I could try to use this with another e-mail provider, but this is how I have everything wired to go with my business. Am I to rework everything in order to fit this phone's idiosyncracies?

On top of that, I am frustrated by the "constant contact" offered by the phone's many pop up windows, which require me to press OK or click on the OK to get rid of them. Fine... no big deal... except when I'm using hands free Bluetooth through my car. Then I have to pull the phone out of my purse and -- while driving -- get rid of those annoying windows while driving. Don't I have a Bluetooth-enabled phone to circumvent the risks associated with staring at my phone to make a call?

Finally, I am frustrated with the phone intermittently getting confused as I'm making a phone call and doing things I don't expect through the touchscreen. For example, there have been times when I'm on a call and then I disconnect a call because I my face or ear pressed something on the screen. (Um... duh... hello HTC! How about programming the touch screen to turn off once I'm on a call?) Other times, I've gone through an entire phone call but then noticed that my ear was playing Bubble Breaker while I was on the phone call. No harm, no foul? Well, not on those busy days when I get many calls and it's been a day since I last charged the phone. Unnecessary Bubble Breaker games while I'm on the phone just drain the battery and leave me at risk of running out of batteries when I least need that to happen.

So... goodbye Windows Mobile 6 "Smart Phone". I'm going back to Blackberry....more info
  • Read this before you start using your wing!
First, let me say anyone buying this phone from Amazon.com is very lucky. I wish I had known I could buy it from them for half the price that I paid for it. With that being said...

The biggest problem with this phone is the memory. No, a storage card will not fix the problem. I have a 4GB, which is nice for storage, but the problem is with the program memory. A way to help this problem, that I was not told by T-Mobile customer service is go into your internet options and save your history for 0 days. It will save your history everytime you go to the internet which uses up all your memory. It has really helped since I did this.

You also need to do a soft reboot everday or every couple of days. This is not a big problem. It only takes a second and does not erase anything so it is not that big of a deal.

One major problem I had was the touch screen went out within a month of owning my phone. My phone was locked and there was no way to make a phone call if the phone was locked and the touch screen does not work. It was 1:30 am and a stranger was sitting outside my house at a time that my town has a serial rapist alert going on. I had no way to call 911. When I finally found an old phone, charged it, put in my sim card and called tmobile customer service, they said their computers go down at night and I needed to call back the next day. The next day they told me they would replace my phone, but it would take 5 days. I went out and bought the dash so I wouldn't have to worry about the screen freezing. I still own the wing because it was past the 14 days, but I have the dash as a back up. Turns out there was a sexual assault two streets away 1 hour later that same night. That is a problem they need to address!

Another problem is trying to type a text message and drive. Yes, I know you should not, but for those that do. It is very hard to balance the phone, type and drive. So if you text message a lot you might want to consider that or try it a lot before your fourteen days are up.

The good: Easy to use. Doesn't take a lot of reading the manual to figure out how to use the phone. I love the fact it accepts a 4GB microSD card. The dash will only work with 2GB.

Microsoft Office is wonderful. You can only view with the Dash.

I can use Mapquest to find phone numbers and locations of businesses without calling information. Has saved me lots of time and money. I love using Internet Explorer!!!

    Nice look.

    Good phone quality.

Battery life is not bad....more info
  • A sidekick 2 user's take
After a few days of use:

    Positives:
    1) Fantastic case material (hard rubber case is fantastic)
    2) Great screen with rich colors
    3) Small form factor for a feature rich smartphone
    4) Spring loaded keyboard snaps open nicely
    5) Decent battery life
    6) Rubberized keyboard
    7) Great price for all the features you are getting

    Negatives:
    1) Slow. Slow. Slow. Synching was slow, apps are slow, wi-fi is slow, heck, nothing about this thing is snappy other than the standby toggle.

    2) Keyboard is just too flat which makes for awkward typing. A shame as its a nice large keypad and rubberized to boot. I stil have yet to find a device that can compare to the Sidekick 2's rubberized keypad (wish they'd bring that back on their newer models, the SK3's plastic board is abysmal).

    3) Windows Mobile Software. I hate to say it but, the hardware side of this phone is being held back by poor software. Windows Mobile is just not a great portable OS. It doesn't handle the things you need to do in the way that you need to do them. When will email and IMs be pushed? Windows Mobile needs to take another note from the Sidekick playbook. On a sidekick, you never miss a message. On this device all you are guaranteed is that the phone will ring. If you are in standby, you will not be getting any notification of your IMs. Unacceptable. This is supposed to be a total communications device. Right now it's just a phone, with some "outgoing" messaging features.

    4) Too many key-clicks necessary. This is more about Windows Mobile really than the Wing. This OS is constantly throwing up dialogs asking you if you really want to delete this, or really want to do that. Toast style dialogs pop up that must be OK'd, when they should really auto-dismiss after a few seconds. On pass code entry it even makes you click "OK" instead of just unlocking when the right pass is entered. In short, it's too "desktop" oriented. Microsoft really needs to take a long hard look as what "portable" means in terms of UI design. App switching needs to be fast, UI needs to be light. Extra dialogs and nag screens need to be removed. When I use a sidekick I never have to click "OK". Everything auto saves, or just does what it needs to do.

    5) Network hangs. I had to reboot wi-fi multiple times in the last few days to keep things working. Every other wi-fi device in my house has no issues. Just this one.

    6) Wi-fi networking is poorly designed. There is no way to get it to ignore networks you don't want to connect to. So it will nag you about connecting to wi-fi networks you don't want when it looses connectivity to a network you do want. Very annoying (more un-necessary key clicks).

In short. The user experience of this device is good as long as you are holding it, or looking at it. The second you start using it, the illusion dissolves. I think HTC did a very nice hardware job however. If you are a Windows Mobile lover, this device is probably going to be a dream come true. It is feature rich and can do a lot more than a sidekick can do. However, if you want an extremely reliable phone/sms/email/IM device that is fast, and let's you *communicate* quickly and efficiently, this is not the device for you.

I would recommend this device to people who must have Windows Mobile for specific 3rd party applications. Other than that, try a blackberry, helio ocean, or sidekick....more info
  • cheap slow PDA phone requires several workarounds
This is the first affordable ($50) feature-rich phone to replace the phone/Palm PDA duo. After removing deletable files and adjusting the size of the PAGE file, this phone has adequate RAM, but is too slow to get 4 stars and emits a high pitch when overclocked.

Syncing contacts, tasks, and calendar events from a computer to the Wing requires Outlook. The workarounds aren't as comprehensive. Syncing Thunderbird contacts requires importing into Outlook Express, then to Outlook, and formatting. This can takes hours. Outlook is relatively much slower, especially with search and synchronized folders enabled. Individual "Tasks" can't be categorized and flagged as they could on a Palm, and I eventually abondoned using it. As for alarms, WM6's requires delving too deep into submenus and way too many clicks to set one. An alarm set in the calendar program is a workaround but will ring only a few times and can go unnoticed.

There's no good way to have all contacts on this phone with only some showing up on the phone list. With too many contacts, this phone will pause for a couple seconds after the first numbers are inputted while it compiles a list of matches. During this time it is unresponsive to other buttons presses. You'll have to disable "smart-dialing" if you enjoy dialing numbers quickly, but will now only be able to search for contacts via the "contacts" button not by the "phone" dialog. This can make it difficult for others to use your phone. The built-in keyboard is nice, but the accompanying screen rotation is too slow to be useful for anything but long messages. I miss the dedicated writing area of other PDAs.

Browsing the net on the Wing is a few times faster via Wi-fi, loading pages at 20kB/s versus a few kB/s on EDGE. This is bad for viewing larger web pages, great for google maps. I get 2-3 days of battery life with normal use, but having a spare battery provides plenty of juice for heavy use. Counterintuitively, turning the phone feature off (airplane mode) quickly drains the battery unless it is rebooted afterwards. Doing this can take up to a minute.

Overall I'm happy with this phone is an inexpensive all-in-one device, but I find myself wanting to switch away from Outlook and the clunky programs that handle the phone menu, contacts, tasks, and alarms on the phone. ...more info
  • Very very nice value for money

I wanted a multipurpose phone ( not a home theater in a box phone).
The phone has very fast GPRS internet access. We used this phone to get around the city on our recent visit to orlando.
Download Google Maps or use Live Search for map service. You can also use it as a GPS receiver (pair with GPS like Magellan 3140) and you are all set.

I did not want the blackberry cos the keyboard make the phone look big and this problem was solved with this machine. The slide in keryboard is very nice.
The touch keyboard is reponsive, not the best but good for all purposes.
The phone performs very well when used as a phone. Absolutely no dropped calls, nice speaker phone ( i liked the RAZRs speaker phone better), good Address book. Camera/video camera is mediocre at best, and I have a 2GB micros SD card which resolved all my memory issues.
Absolutely wonderful value for money device....more info
  • Nice phone, when you tweak it right.
Out of the box this phone has some problems, but these can be fixed. Foremost, there is not enough free memory to run programs. With the default t-mobile ROM, there is about 8MB of free program memory after a clean start. After some use this can dip as low as 2MB with no programs running! This means that windows mobile has a HUGE footprint of around 40MB on this phone! After some digging, I found some custom ROMs and I would highly recommend flashing your phone with one of these. For example, the one that I use (OpenTouch V3.0) has a MUCH smaller footprint of about 29MB, leaving around 20MB free for running programs. This is plenty and I never have "out of memory" errors anymore

The second common complaint is the processor speed. I haven't found this to be much of a problem, but if you need to run intensive apps like skype, you can overclock using BatteryStatus. Some people have had luck getting it up to 273Mhz, I keep it at around 240Mhz. You can even use CPU scaling to automatically adjust the speed depending on CPU usage.

There are also plenty of addons and 3rd party programs that will make this phone rival the iphone. After the above tweaks, the only complaint I have is that this phone won't be compatible with t-mobile's UMTS network when it becomes available.

In summary, I really don't know what t-mobile was thinking shipping this phone in such a crippled state. But after some modifications, this phone is REALLY nice. I enjoy it much more than my previous blackberry pearl.

Pros: long battery life, nice form factor, runs windows mobile 6, touch screen, easy access microSD slot.

Cons: A little on the heavy side, needs some tweaking to be usable, not UMTS compatible....more info
  • Great phone, best deal in 2007.
The only thing I didn't like about this phone was it's 201 MHZ chip other than that it's 5 stars, for today's PDA technology. *****

    Pro's:

    Silding keyboard
    slimer then other pda's
    Battery life is O.K
Lots of features, more than meets the eye.
    Lots of camera features.

    Con's:

I bit hard to set up Windows live.
Wi-fi is not the best, but Edge-tech is better on this phone.
    Camera Quality could be better
201 MHZ chip, could be higher but it's o.K.
A little slow on video playback....more info
  • Chunky, poor battery life and performance
I've had this phone for about 6 months now and use it for both personal and work. There are several issues with this phone that make it a poor choice for use all around. There are a few redeeming qualities, but for the most part ... it's a bummer. First, the battery life. This phone needs to be charged seemingly on a daily basis. It definitely needs to be turned off when not in use for long periods of time, even when you are using energy saving things like a low backlight. Second, memory. It comes with 128MB of ROM (which seems hardly enough to run WM 6) and 16MB of RAM. I have frequent issues with memory (though I have an additional MicroSD card in and the hanging of applications. Admittedly, this could be Windows Mobile, but based on the memory warnings I frequently get, it's not that alone. And did I mention that this phone is a brick? It's heavy and thick which makes it awkward to ever put in a pocket.

The few redeeming things? The screen resolution and backlight is quite bright and clear and the button placement and shape are pretty intuitive. The keys for the physical keyboard are slightly rounded which makes it pretty easy to type quickly. If you're stuck with a T-Mobile smartphone, go with the Dash or the Shadow ... or even better, the new HTC Tytan!...more info

  • I hate this phone, it suckes.
I got this phone last summer, and i thought i made smart decision, but i was wrong.

I really hate this phone... mostly because its really slow.
And i hate the touch screen.... like when i am talking with someone,
this phone calls some other people too bcz my cheek push the screen...

and, it does not react soon, when i open the slide,
it takes forever to show the appropriate window.

anyways, there are so many reasons why i hate it.
I would rather choose really basic cell phone than this.

  • Horrible customer service and BAD phone
We had a similar problem...my girlfriend's wings screen went out after 10 days or so. The screen is totally blank. There was no external damage to the phone or screen. She got charged $100 for the warranty exchange, stating they found physical damage to the phone and is not covered by warranty. She contacted customer care and requested they return the phone and was told the phone has been destroyed.

Destroyed...really? I doubt they destroyed the phone. They just want to make $100 profit. If they return the phone they got no profit. They probably just replace the screen on my old phone and sell it for $200 or so.

I believe it costs them less than $100 to make the POOR quality Wing because it costs Apple only $100 (you can find this info. By searching online) to make the new 3G iPhone which is a lot more advance than the Wing.

  • Disappointment
I have used the T Mobile MDA for about a year. I was mostly satisfied with the MDA. My only complaint was at times it was very sluggish and could not handle too many applications before choking. I bought the "Wing" knowing that it would suffer the same performance problems but may have some improvements being an HTC second generation product with Windows Mobile 6. Boy was I wrong. First, the rubberized paint looks cool and provides a better grip, but taking the phone out of your pocket or the belt holder is a struggle. Many times it results in inadvertently answering a call while struggling to retrieve the phone. This happens because the buttons on the phone are so flimsy and sensitive that the slightest pressure results in a button press. The keys are larger on the keyboard than the MDA which for me results in more false key presses since it is easier to straddle more than one key at a time while typing. I like the black keypad, the blue back lighting, and the "Caps" and "Alt" leds. I also like the spring loaded opening of the keyboard. What I don't like is that the keyboard always wants to open and gives the phone a very cheap and flimsy feel. This has become worse over use (only 1 month). The "Windows" start button and "Ok" button make it easy to use the Wing without a stylus. This is probably the greatest strength over the MDA (plus the stylus is also non-telescoping). Another irritation is that the SD Memory card cover and the USB port cover are a cheap, flimsy, rubber cap that constantly pop open and never stay in place. If you have an MDA, keep it. You will be disappointed with the Wing. If this is your first Pocket PC, beware that the Wing is not the best representation....more info
  • The bomb

  • Pretty cool phone for the average user.
I got the T-Mobile Wing to replace a Razr and it is a huge jump from the Razr which is a 'dumb' phone compared to the Wing. I got the Wing as part of a deal - 49.99 after rebates for a one year contract, which is as good as its gets.

This being my first smart phone, I was impressed with its capabilities. Finally I can club a Phone, PDA and a Music Player into one and hopefully elimnate the need to carry different instruments. The phone shipped with a set of ear phones cum mike which can be used to listen to music and also for the phone calls. However the wired set frequently gets entangled and can get irksome to use.

Some of the things I missed - a tactile feedback from the keypad, instant response to the keys (you can always see a perceptable delay when you press buttons). The call button has the tendency to get activated and calls are dialed when the phone is put in its cover.

The Windows Mobile has Pocket Word, Excel etc which is sufficient for my needs.

Wifi worked out of the box, even with various Security settings on my home wifie network, it worked well when i entered all the settings. The range of it however sucks. It works well when I am close to the router, not so well, when far away in the furthest corner of my home.

I took the Myfaves plan and thereis an option to make the myfaves icon appear on the front screen or not.

Music is synched thru Media Player on the computer and works well. I havent got around to using the play lists, but video also can be played on the phone.

The 2MP Camera is activated by the camera button on the top left of the phone. There are options for white balances, video camera mode etc. The click button is difficult to press, but what the heck. It takes reasonably good pictures.

Which brings me to the memory. the in-phone memory is not sufficient and it is necessary to buy a MicroSD card. with 1GB MicroSDs costing around 10$ an average, its a good invstment to buy a card and use in the slot.

Having the card also allows you to use additional programs. The Wing apparently has GPS compatability but I havent bought the GPS chip to test that out.

Google maps worked well out of the box, but the Google Gmail app failed due to some certificate error. still have to trouble shoot that.

I used a Jabra BT500 head set and blue tooth synched without a problem. the range between the headset and the phone is great as well.

I also had a good opportunity to compare it with the HTC 8525 (Cingular) which is similar. The pluses of the wing over the 8525 are:

    1. The Wing has phenomenal battery life. the Cingular 8525 sucks in that department due to a faster processor.
    2. More compact size. the 8525 looks like a brick compared to the Wing.
    3. Enclosed MicroSD Cover - no chance of the card getting ejected by accident.

That said, the 8525 scores over the wing in the following areas.
    1. The 8525 slider cover locks solid. The Wing's slider is flimsy. when you hold the wing in your palm. the top screen slider easily gets pushed a few mm to the side. very annoying.
    2. The 8525 feels solid .
    3. The 8525 has a faster processor.
    4. The 8525 has a 'dial wheel' to the left, the Wing only has a volume slider. the dial wheel is more intiutive for blackberry users etc.
    5. 8525's camera has a macro close up mode.

In the final reckoning, the Wing may fall short for power users, but for the first time user of a smart phone, it is a great instrument to have. especially for 50 bucks!...more info
  • T-Mobile slow data and Phone memory leave lots to be desired
Phone starts off handicapped, in that the installed paltry memory is split between program and storage memory and quite inadequate. What this means is you likely will have trouble managing memory as your familiarity and use grows. You'll find the thing just about freezing up, as it natively cannot recover enough RAM to run. There are some hacks to improve this, but they are unauthorized, and you best know what you are doing or you'll own a brick.

T-Mobile is average on voice connectivity, but this is typically variable where by you live. I find the signal level fluctuates a lot, just sitting in my office or class. Have always been able to use the phone though, so more academic at this point. Be sure to call them after 90 days, as T-Mobile will unlock the phone for you. Finish the contract and you can resell it if you wish.
Data is like going back to dial-up. I feel my hair turn grey waiting for the thing. T-Mobile (and ATT) EDGE Data speed fluctuatins are so great, even standing still, webpage downloads also can freeze while waiting for the wind to change direction (of whatever causes the signal to degrade) so you can finish. Google maps in the car mostly work, but there are occasionally dead zones that tick me off.

This unit does have wi-fi, so if you can connect to this, it's as fast as a PC, but battery drains somewhat quicker. The keyboard is great, and a major reaon for buying. I hate the "chicklet" keyboard many phones sport.
    I type a lot.
Bluetooth has paired with everything I've tried, I think it's ok. The Voice command is mediocre, any significant backgd noise (radio, road noise) makes it a trial to use. I'm 50-50, takes two/three times to get it to dial correctly in the car. This is no bluetooth though. In quiet places it is good, but who can control that?

While the processor is slower, I find the tradeoff in battery life to be well worth it. It's in the "fast enough" category. I can go almost two days w/o a recharge, so very happy with this.

I use SPB Finance (like quicken) and Memmaker to give me back memory and to clear the RAM so I only reboot maybe a couple times a week.
Also use handymenu, handy launcher and taptext (google them). All are useful tools. Finally, SPB Mobile Shell will really add functionaility, I ues my fingers a lot and this makes it much easier.
HandySwitcher is the "alt-tab" of mobile phones! Must have, as WM only minimize apps and it is otherwise fustrating copying a phone number from a website to the phone to dial a number. HandySwitcher allows you to quickly switch between apps or kill unneeded app easily to recover memory.

Microsoft traditionally takes three tries to get it right. This means windows mobile 6 is really mediocre, considering it's version 6 and they've had twhice the number of chances and it's still more like a toy than a professional mobile tool. Too bad Psion pretty much got killed. Microsoft still has a way to go in terms of mobile usability and memory management. It reminds me of Windows 85, in that it too stank at memory management.
But the above addon tools make it much more usable.

Ifyou are only using your phone for just contact management, calendar and of course phone, consider a blackberry. My killer app was a "quicken" type program since my beloved Psion 3c died. SPB Finance makes many of the shortcomings worthwhile and SPB Mobile Shell seems to really make the UI usable.
Despite the bashing and real need for improvement, I do find it a useful tool and use it every day. It's really handy to have everything in pone place and as I get better with the clumsy OS, I find I depend on it more and more....more info
  • Bad Screen with Bad T-Mobile customer service
I would give this phone a 4 stars if the screen is not defected OR if T-Mobile stands behind their warranty/product.

After about 3-4 weeks of use, the screen went blank. I took it to several local T-Mobile stores to try to get a new one. They all told me it's a manufacture defect but they cannot exchange it for me because I didn't buy directly from them.

I contacted customer service to do the exchange. They charged me $10 for shipping. Four weeks later, I found out that they charged me another 100$ claiming that there's physical damages. My phone was like brand new (3-4 weeks old) when I send it in and I never dropped it.

I talked to a customer service and then a supervisor and got nothing. I complained to the executive customer service and got nothing also. The guy at the executive customer service is extremely rude. The amazing part is that even I have pictures that I took before I send in the phone, those people refused to look at those pictures. Actually, a customer service at the store recommended me to take pictures in case they try to pull the physical damages trick. It seems that T-Mobile like to pull this trick to make extra money.

    Now, I file a complaint w/ BBB.

UPDATE-This is an update on my BBB case. This guy, Jason, at the executive office kept sending the same message (copy and paste) to BBB that he will not do anything and he doesn't care about the pictures. My case is closed. T-Mobile is Terrible-Mobile...more info
  • There Are Several Better Devices Available
I just returned my T-Mobile wing after a week and a half of solid use. It had a lot of strong points but some major drawbacks ruined the deal. First, those shopping for a device like this are probably looking for a fairly quick data connection. I'm sad to say that T-mobile just isn't up to par with any other, major carrier when it comes to data speeds. It's not a trivial kinda of difference eitther. Verizon has speeds on their phones that are nearly as fast or faster than DSL. With this phone it's barely comparable to a dial-up modem. Forget about Skype, forget about streaming video. It just doesn't happen at those speeds.

From a business perspective this device is very solid. Windows Mobile 6.0 offers a few crucial changes over 5.0 but the applications are what won me over. It's nearly a fully functional desktop version of Excel in this bad boy. The version of Word is top of the line as well. Outlook functionality is stellar, and... it even browses Sharepoint sites (with some limitations).

As far as the physical device itself, I have some gripes. When using it horizontally with the keyboard slid open, the screen feels very fragile and the device feels fragile over all in your hands when using it this way. I could predict that the sliding functionality would break in the very near future.. .it didn't feel sturdy in that actiona t all.

The keyboard is virtually flat, which sucks if you are typing anything other than an extremely quick text. There is no 3.5mm audio jack, it's USB and Bluetooth only. That' sunfortunate because this thing is just about the right size to replace your iPod with, and with memory cards getting as big as they are it's not such a bad alternative. Plus the Win Media Player is very cool and very comprehensitve on this guy. It can be controlled from the home menu

The overall feel of the device is great. The case is not smooth and plasticy, it's textured and has a soft feel that would obviously show fewer nicks and dings than your standard PDA. Also, just in case you wondered, the color is not as bad as it appears online. It's a very deep, dark, bluish-purple with a metallic sheen.

I can see this device having serious merit for somebody with smaller hands since it isn't that much longer than a RAZR.

In the end I sent the device back because it's Wi-Fi module failed. Let me tell you this up front... T-Mobile, not very good at technical troubleshooting. Wouldn't recommend you even bother. I made it through 3 levels of Technical support for the guy to tell me that it must be my wireless setup, despite the fact that my friend was able to connect with his T-Mobile Dash, and the Wing wasn't able to connect to ANY wi-fi connection after the first day. That's T-mobile though, I doubt you'll have success troubleshooting with any carrier on that note. The real story here is that mine was prone to defects within 48 hours of standard use.

Overall, I'd recommend it. I'm sure they would have recalled the device by now if everybody was having the wi-fi issues so I guess that's a fairly safe bet. I wasn't able to find evidence of mass defect for wi-fi capabilities on the net.

Make sure that you are comfortable with the feel of this device when it's open and the keyboard is in use before you commit to it!...more info
  • Wing is hampered by its slowness and operating system
Just bought it yesterday with the hope of replacing a Palm PDA and a cell phone. Sound quality on the phone was adequate. It was expensive.

I am extremely disappointed in the Windows Mobile 6 operating system. The software installed on this phone takes up half of its onboard memory, although a micro SD card can supplement that. Every time I closed, opened or switched between applications there was delay. After having used a Palm based PDA for several years, there is no way I can give up the efficiency and user friendliness of that operating system for this. In addition the software only syncs with Microsoft Outlook on my computer, which I find to be a weak PIM tool for personal use. It cannot keep track of all the data fields I've added in Palm software.

The web access is extremely slow and most web pages are unreadable. The touch screen does not work as smoothly as my Palm PDA and the screen is very small with tiny letters that I have to strain to read.

In summary, it is a weak PDA and only an adequate phone. For the price the compromise is too great....more info

  • Good ergonomics, but poor memory architecture
Owned this for several weeks. Use for email, texting and taking the occasional picture.

Pros: Wifi, Bluetooth, reception, ringtones; all excellent.

Slide out keyboard makes email a snap.

Bad: Memory. This phone (with a 2 GB MicroSD card) CONSTANTLY runs out of memory. This is a major detraction to what could have been a great phone.

Not sure if it is the device or Windows Mobile 6, but you literally won't be able to use too many things at once.

Lots of forums and development going on with this device, so hopefully Microsoft or HTC will team up and issue a patch.

Worth $300? Tough call. I would have felt better if it were priced around $199.

    3 out of 5 stars....more info
  • cool phone/ horrible service provider
the phone is great for quick texting with friends, reading e-mails, passive web searches, and reviewing documents. you may find out, if you're wanting web speed, this is not the phone for you.
Combined with T-Mobile's horrible customer service and the inability to troubleshoot after being on the phone for 2 hrs. In addition if your phone ever becomes defective do not expect to got into a T-Mobile store for a replacement like you can with other carriers. You May instead expect to not have a phone for 3 business days (no they will not ship on Saturdays), pay a $15 shipping fee in additiion to the $5-$7 you each month for insurance and of course to replace your phone you will need to pay $50-$150 (depending on the "type" of device) if They find that it is damaged vs. defective.
but dont worry you can dispute the false "damage" charge with your cc company so that they have to prove the "damage" and voila! 30 days later you get your $50-$150 back. ...more info
  • Great product!
I have been using my T-Mobile Wing for about 5 weeks now, and I am very pleased with it. Yes, there are problems (slow connectivity being the main one), but that has to do with T-Mobile's service, not the phone itself from what I've seen. Paired up with a Bluetooth headset, I rarely have to touch the phone itself for actual phone calls; when I do, it's easy to use. I got it mainly to replace having both a PDA and a phone to carry; it does everything I need it to and then some. You do need to remember to lock the screen and be careful about how you carry the Bluetooth headset to avoid making unintended calls, but overall it meets all my needs and I expect to use it for a long time....more info

I was happy with the MDA and thought this would have been an improvement on the old product. Not so. The OS is completly unstable and is constantly locks up when syncing or recieving a call. Hopefully a firmware update will be out soon to fix this. The buttons are overly sensitive and I am constantly hanging up on people or calling people inadvertantly. The grip tight coating makes it easier to hold onto, but is impossible to retreive out of your pocket if the phone is ringing. • Cool phone in need of a slight make over
I've had the T-mobile wing for almost a week now and overall I'm pretty impressed. I've read complaints about speed but my phone connects and send and receives data very fast. I like the Windows component and appreciate the business like setting but I hoped for a few more "fun" features. The Camera works very well with many options. The volume on calls are not loud enough for me but sounds better when using a bluetooth headset. The battery life is not long at all and has to stay on charge frequently. Being able to use a stylus is great and I really like the note feature which enables you to write on the face of the phone as you would on paper. I like that the screen orients itself when you slide it open and that your favorite five people can be on the "Today" menu The QWERTY keyboard is very useful for text messaging, composing e-mails etc, the predictive text function is wonderful. At times I do wish that the slide out screen was not completely flat but if you hold it up texting is not difficult. I like that you can dial a number with the voice command as well as command several phone features with your voice and that numbers can be dialed with the stylus or your finger with the on screen keypad The design is nice. Phone is well built and has a classy yet sturdy look. Maybe I'm a big kid because again the Windows program and all is very useful for work and schedules and such but I miss the usual icons and some of the other fun features on most cell phones. This does come with two installed games. You cannot download wallpapers, ring tones etc if you are into that but you can transfer your own pics from your phone or pc with the included usb cable and change your background screen. Again my complaints may be nothing much to some people but if your going to shell out the dough then you need all the info you can. It also has windows media and you can create your own playlists. I was also able to compose my phone book entries online at T-mobile and it was downloaded to my phone. Also please invest the little money needed and purchase a memory card cause the phones memory goes very quickly. Overall the phone is a powerhouse and if you have internet it is even better.

There really isnt anything spectacular about this phone. It called people randomly all the time. The screen stopped working after a year only. At $300 I would think I'd get more out of it. I was carried away by the hype when I purchased this phone, but I will never buy this phone again. The internet processor is very slow so if you're getting lost, you'll get more lost before you can get the right directions. Anyway, I called about possibly getting it replaced but was told I had no insurance, which wasn't even offered to me at the time I purchased. I was told there was no insurance I could buy for this phone. Insurance won't help anyway because I was told I would have to pay about $150 to get a replacement phone! Such a waste of money! I'd rather buy a new Nokia!...more info
  • Extremely Happy with my Wing
I'll keep this as simple as I can.

Windows Mobile is for users who enjoy configuring and playing with the OS, business users, etc. If you want something super simple to text message and what not, grab a Sidekick.

For me, I use my Wing with an exchange server and directpush to sync my outlook, emails, etc. It works like a champ. Another cool feature of this phone is it's ability to act as a modem for your laptop. It takes about 30 seconds of configuration (programs >> accessories >> internet sharing, set "usb" and "wmodem link") and plug it in, voila, unlimited internet on my laptop, no crazy charges, providing you have the dataplan, which you will most likely anyways.

I have overclocked my phone to 260mhz to speed things up using "Battery Status" and have no real performance issues, I use Opera Mini web browser and it's cool as hell. Another REALLY amazing app I suggest is S2U2 - it's a lock screen that allows you to slide2unlock much like iphones, plus it gives you visual prompts of missed calls, messages, etc... REALLY cool.

I also suggest grabbing the latest version of Live Search too. Plus the phone comes with Live Messenger on it, and it's full featured, you can send pictures via IM, voice clips, and obviously messages with ease, and it works great.

The phone's keyboard slides out nicely and works great, the camera is pretty good as well.

At the end of the day, with a little configuration and customization, you can really go a long ways with this phone. It's been a champ for me for the last 6 months of daily use, battery life is great too.

I'm just not sure what to really complain about here.

  • Poor quality for the price!
I purchased this phone through T-Mobile in August. At first I was eager, since it listed all the features I was looking for in a phone. But as soon as I put my hands on it, I was disappointed at the level of performance. Picture quality was awful, I couldn't use the music player or connect the phone to my computer, and too slow. I took it to T-Mobile, they tweeked it a bit, but problems kept on coming back. My computer and laptop are both Mac, and for some odd reason it refused to connect. Some pros were: Battery life was good, Office applications were bonus, though since it was not connecting to my computer I didn't see the point of trying to use it if I can't transfer it. E-mail service was good, and you can add 3-4 email addresses and works well. Still after paying $375 for this phone I was less than impressed, so I returned it. ...more info
  • Awesome
Best purchase, got tired of carrying the palm pilot and phone and love the capabilities it has, its limitless. Just signed up for the Mobile TV option due to the Gulf being Hurricane alley. Camera is fantastic with great clarity, the Microsoft ability is the best option since its used for most things. Now I am synced to download music, will need a bigger storage card. which is why I am on Amazon now. figured I would pass on the good word.

  • Not great but okay - some issues - but that is Windows Mobile for you !
    updated 6/5/08

I have had this phone for more than a year, now.

    The good
    -----
+The keyboard is pretty good - it could have more height on the key domes but it works okay. Probably one of the best of the qwerty - or any phone keyboards.

+The Screen is nice - 2.8 inch diagonal

+The Device is small- smaller than the MDA which is almost the same

+The coating looks and feels good

    +Some helpful programs

+My faves might save you some money

    +Battery life is decent

+T-Mobile customer service is about as good as phone companies get. Usually tied with Verizon for the best (JD Power) or just barely behind Verizon (Checkbookdotorg).

+T-Mobile rates are cheaper than Verizon and ATT, and usually are as good if not better than Sprint.

    The not so good
    -----------------
-Edge - it is okay but T-Mobile does not have 3G or faster connection yet. Sprint, Cingular/ATT and Verizon all have comparable or better devices with 3G / Ev-Do speeds. (May 2008 3G on T-Mobile NYC and soon to spread)

-Memory - usable memory gets low pretty fast. You need to close programs before you open other programs usually and remember to restart it every other day. Also there is some lag time when turning on programs or waiting for the screen to change to horizontal when you open the keyboard. (UPDATE - go to howardforums to find free programs to speed up your Wing and a procedure to fix some of the memory issue. These fixes make it a four star phone I think).

-Phone buttons get pushed easily in the provided holster (even with lock screen enabled - the green and red phone buttons are still active and they stick out and so you will answer calls without meaning to, or hangup occasionally).

-Processor is a slow 201mhz by todays standards. While this makes for good battery life, it is disappointing to see Cingular with the 400mhz Hermes/8525 and Sprint with the 6700 and set to release the upgrade to the Hermes - the 6800 in October. (Verizon has the XV6800 now as well). All are faster machines with faster connections. And, of course, there is the iPhone with a 600+mhz processor.

-T-Mobile help just told me that the darn phone will not always sync recurring appointments correctly. This is of course not a T-Mo or an HTC problem but a WM6 problem. Apparently if you put a time limit on the recurring appointments it solves the problem. Say - this recurring appointment will end after 999 ocurrences.

    =============
Bottom line (so far for me): if you have a Dash or MDA (ATT 8125) or something comparable that is still working - save your money and wait for the next ppc. Certainly the various 6800s are better than this.

If you want a qwerty ppc with touch screen - you might be pleased. It may be the best T-Mobile could do given their limited technology (no 3G in my city yet) and customer preferences (small phones are more popular). ...more info
  • Under-powered
I have been using the T-Mobile Wing for about a week now and it is a disappointment. With only a 200mhz processor and 64 mb RAM, it often runs out of available memory and applications hang. If you are looking for the full functionality of a PDA, then this falls short of it's potential.

My previous PDA was an Ipaq 4155 running Windows Mobile 2002, and needless to say, that PDA was faster than this device....more info
  • NOT SO BAD PEOPLE - JUST NEEDS A TWEAK!
If you own this phone then you are not a luddite. With a few tweaks the phone is excellent. I highly recomend installing "BatteryStatus" and overclock the processor. The program is found here: [...]. I overclocked my wing to 299mhz and it makes a huge difference. Prior to overclock, I could not stream video from my orb server. After OC, no stuttering. The program lets you overclock dynamically (to save battery life) directly from the today screen. It also comes with additional tools that display mem usage, battery drain, etc. I have been running it for 2 weeks and checked all message boards before installing it. ITS SAFE - Just make sure you do not set the option to have it overclock on a soft reboot (if it causes an issue for you, it could reboot you into the same issue). The only problem I had was skype at 299mhz. I had to lower it to 247mhz to prevent the wing from freezing. After that I have skyped for hours without any freeze. Do your self a favor and give this a shot - you will be very impressed with what the wing can do.

Lastly, if you travel alot, try WorldMate, it runs perfect on the phone, costs less then 30 bucks, and provides everything a world traveler needs (weather, airline schedules, flight checker, currency converter, etc - most can be updated over wifi or edge).

  • Boo! Only if you will use it to its full potential.
I really, really don't like this phone. I paid a lot of money for it b/c it looked cool and did a lot of cool stuff, but after the newness wore off, it's a disappointment when all I really do is make calls, text and use the calendar and notepad. I have yet to ever plug this in to my PC. I suppose if you want to get this phone because you "need" all the features it offers (outlook sync, web browsing, email, etc...) it's probably going to be great for you. But, if you are looking to get it for basic use, but want it for the QWERTY keyboard and a few of the other cool things it does, look somewhere else.
The touch screen is a big hassle as you can't just close this and toss it in your pocket/purse. It consistently makes calls on its own and is always bringing up screens that I didn't ask for and then requires 4 touch commands (if you can figure the right sequence) to get the random screen to go away. Oftentimes, it simply locks up and I have to take the battery out to get it to reset.
Additionally, it rings out loud when set on silent (not ok in my office) and the speaker works intermittently.
Lastly, I have not had this phone for a year and the colored finish on the outside buttons is chipping off and it looks ridiculous. TMobile offered to send me a new phone, but advised that after they received the original back, they may determine this was normal wear/tear and charge my $100 deductible. I paid too much for the phone to begin with, I didn't want to pay another $100, so I guess I'll walk around with a very expensive phone that looks like I picked it up from the pawn shop that I can never get to work right.
My husband swears I just don't know how to use it, he could be right.
Regardless, I am looking to replace this ASAP because I'm fed up. Maybe my rocket scientist husband can use it since he's so smart. ;)...more info
  • Pretty incredible
I had the Wing for 2 weeks; what can I say, it's pretty amazing! Note that I have the unlimited data plan ($20 or so) which is a must.

    1. The phone works great, including speaker phone
    2. It is a real computer: I can read Word documents, PDF's, Powerpoints, etc.
    3. Finally got synchronization to our Exchange server to work, via VPN: Note: the trick is to set dialing exceptions, so that when you go to the respective IP address it knows not to go through the Web, but through your VPN
    4. Voice commands are pretty nice: It recognizes every one of my 100 or so contacts in my contact list; so just say "Call bill smith" and it will find a contact that is "Smith Bill", or "Bill, Smith", etc. in your contact list and call it: Almost eerie!
    5. I loaded Skype (which is supposedly released for Windows Mobile 6.1; my Wing has 6.0); it works flawlessly and without problems! So I can sit at any place anywhere in the world with a fast WIFI connection, and carry on a conversation via Skype for free!! Note that the sound comes through the speaker, but with the headset you have complete privacy. Very nice for international travellers!
    6. I can easily teather the phone to my (Vista 64) laptop; because there are Hotspots everywhere (in all major hub airports), I now have WIFI access to my email via my laptop, using the Wing as the modem (neat! Only drawback is that you cannot originate or receive phone calls while doing this). Also, you can use the GPRS and/or Edge networks teathered to your laptop; so while driving in the back of a car, I can work through my emails on my laptop!
    7. The Edge/GPRS network is slower and the phone is NOT 3G enabled! That is ok by me, because don't care about streaming video or cruising Youtube. Also note that the web browser doesn't support Java addins (which is a real bummer), nor could I find a third-party addin that would work; so some websites that use Java addins won't work. Youtube uses flash, which is not supported either, but there are free downloads that will support it.
    8. I have 8 Gig of memory I added; makes for a nice MP3 player.
    9. There are other nice free programs (in addition to Skype); for example, there is a very workable remote desktop client, so I have remote access (via VPN) to my work computers
    10. Main memory is limited to 64Meg, so you DO have to make choices; for example, I tried to install TomTom navigation software, but it won't fit unless I remove Skype and the Remote Desktop Client from the main memory (the Remote Desktop Client has to be in main memory, for the keyboard to work); I chose to keep Skype. Besides, the Live Search program from Microsoft (free) is pretty neat as it is, when paird with an external GPS; I use a Pharos Bluetooth.
    11. I am still learning about this thing, but I have to say that it is an incredible computer for what I do (traveling for work, etc.). I do not know how it stacks up against Iphone or GooglePhone, but if your infrastructure is Windows based, I guess that the Windows Mobile 6 solution will integrate more easily.
    12. Finally: The camera is good; voice notes are useful, etc. There is NO internal GPS, and the only wired "hard" connection is via a small USB connector, so your regular 3.5 MM headset won't work (nor will your cheap 2.5 MM phone plug with mic); there are adapters for most standard plugs etc., but you will need to plug in via USB; note that the phone comes with a headset, charging and sync cable etc.; there is tons of low-cost stuff on ebay if you need extra cables, windshield mounts, .......more info
  • Very good phone...a bit overpriced.....
I just upgraded to the T-Mobile Wing by HTC. I am very happy with one exception. There is a defect in the camera. A white dot annoyingly appears on the screen when I open the camera application. It was a hassle to get the phone replaced, but T-Mobile finally agreed to send a new phone without me first having to send the old phone back. However, I did have to threaten cancellation of my service to get them to agree. Why should I be without a phone, after plucking down 300 big ones? Anyway, as far as the phone goes, again I am very happy minus the setback. After using the phone for a week I have not noticed any speed issues. I usually run one application at a time, as most people do, so speed is not an issue. I read several reviews where people were concerned with the 200mhz processor being too slow, but if it adds battery life I will take that trade off. The wi-fi is a breeze to setup, and a big plus. Everywhere I go I have wi-fi so I don't have the need for the 3G network. If you don't have wi-fi, and don't mind adding to your monthly bill for 3G, you might be more happy with another phone on another network. Windows Mobile 6 is a nice upgrade over previous versions I have owned, its a more streamlined experience. The phone is definitely one of the more attractive smart phones on the market, with its deep blue rubberized skin. I think the phone is $100 overpriced at $299, considering the iphone just dropped to $399, but as happy as I am I see using this phone for quite a while. ...more info
  • Still Lacking
I have been through every carrier out there in the past 15 years and found them lacking. T-Mobile was the notable exception and I have been a loyal follower since switching 6 years ago. They have begun to slip a bit in the past year or so, but they are still better than anyone else to my knowledge.

I purchased the T-Mobile MDA two years ago and was very pleased during that time. It gave out two years and two days after purchasing. (The repair cost of the motherboard will be about $230.) I was forced to buy a phone on the spot and bought the wing as the likely successor to the MDA. It uses a newer version of the Microsoft Mobile software that has several minor upgrades. It also has a better camera and movie feature. Unfortunately the drawbacks will drive you crazy:

    1. The amount of memory that comes with the phone is minimal and there is no way to upgrade. Worse, the memory must be manually unloaded from the phone. Example: You close the camera or other application and then must go to the the memory allocation program and instruct it to unload. The new mobile software makes it easier to unload from the main screen but this is very frustrating.

    2. The screen does not adequately lock. I wear my phone in a hip holster. If anyone should call the screen turns on and could be autoanswered. T-mobiles recomendation was that I manually depress the screen lock each time I want to use the phone - once to start and once when I am done. As this is a rather small text button on the screen, I am forced to either grow nails or keep reaching for the stylus. This is large annoyance to anyone that uses the phone.

    3. The back case is not adequately locked and frequently comes off while the phone is in your hand. I fear this will be the cause of an eventual drop.

    4. The last problem may be specific to my phone. I kept missing calls despite being in close proximity to the phone in quiet areas. Something was malfunctioning with the volume controls. The phone is equipped with volume up and down button on the side. If you hold the "down" button long enough it will lower until it no longer rings or vibrates. I would reset the volume manually to maximum and minutes or seconds later it would lower to non-existant without being touched. T-mobile did respond and is sending a new phone priority mail at their expense.

    5. Despite having finished my phone contract, I was forced to pay an extra $100 because T-mobile offers its best prices only to new customers. As a loyal customer I only got a $50 rebate. This is a calculated business decision on T-mobiles part.

For the $400 I was asked to pay, I now wish that I would have purchased a Blackberry. This phone is trying to be too much and comes up short....more info
