Customer Reviews: - Just what she wanted!
Bought this for my mother who lives in a rural area with no local TV stations. 24 hour broadcast of weather conditions on demand. Programed severe weather condition alerts condusive to her area (ie: tornado, severe thunderstorms, blizzard etc.) with audible siren and voice. Hope and pray she never needs it. ...more info - Does the job
It seems to do everything that I would require of it. I wouldn't mind something with more fancy menus and more options, but that obviously would bring up the price. This product seems to deliver on what is promised along with a low price.
It has already proved useful a few times when we had thunderstorm and tornado warnings. Sometimes everything outside is completely tranquil, but then only a few hours after the alert, it is a major storm outside....more info - Easy to set up
This was very easy to program. What I like is that you can pick and choose which alerts you receive....more info - Weather or not...
a nice product and the price was right, covers a variety of alerts and is customizable for your area....more info - Weather Alert Radio
Product was easy to set up, fortunately have not had a test of it's emergency alerts. Only thing is LED light on panel is pretty bright...if you need a nightlight in a bedroom it would provide one. Wish they had a way to turn that off. But, well made product....more info - Best investment I've made for peace of mind
While living in the Midwest for many years, I was never nervous about severe weather: there were warning sirens, pretty predictable weather patterns and comprehensive news coverage. Unfortunately, I have learned that where I live now (Chapel Hill, NC) has neither warning sirens (!) nor predictable weather patterns (but does have good weather coverage if you know to turn it on). After learning about a tornado warning in the northern part of the county only because a coworker happened to have the weather report up on her computer, I started researching weather radios. I settled on this one for its programmable features and based upon the other reviews (and the cost, though I actually paid a little more than what they're advertising now, but this is more than worth it). Last week, it really got a workout with the massive storms that came through, including the tornadoes in Greensboro. Once again, I can take comfort knowing that something will wake me up when there is nasty weather coming through, as it doesn't seem like they'll be installing sirens any time soon (which baffles me, considering this is the same metro area that shuts down at even the slightest whisper of the word "snow" during the winter months, so you'd think the weather paranoia would be a year-round phenomenon).
This radio was easy to set up; the instruction manual looks intimidating, but really, just follow the steps and you'll find that the set-up and basic use is very intuitive. Even the lowest volume setting for the alert and radio is enough to wake me and I can hear it clearly from the other end of the apartment (and even if it wakes the neighbors, I argue that a weather radio is a bit different than a barking dog or booming subwoofer). I don't use the alarm feature and while the beeping noise when you press the buttons is a little excessive, you can turn the beep off. I have it programmed for my county and the three or four surrounding counties and it is quite easy to select which alerts you want to receive and which you don't.
Overall, I highly recommend this (or honestly, any other reliable) weather radio. Even if you live in an area with sirens, you don't always hear them depending on where in town you live in relation to where the sirens are located and especially when you factor in variables like air conditioning, televisions, radios, dishwashers and other noisy everyday items that may prevent you from hearing them. Best of luck in your search and stay safe....more info - Great product!
I've had the 'First Alert Public Alert Radio with S.A.M.E' for about two months now and it continues to surprise me - in a good way! I had been using an ancient hand sized portable alert radio for the last 8 years and this is a HUGE improvement.
Pros:
- SAME technology that works. Not being woken up for a severe thunderstorm on the other side of the state is priceless.
- When an alert activates the radio, the tone sounds, the alert plays, and then the radio returns to standby until the watch/warning is updated. However, a light continues to flash red or orange depending on the type of alert. This is a really nice feature - I have a dog that would be driven nuts by the sound so I always had to turn my old radio off when I left for work and then reprogram everything when I got home. I can leave this radio plugged in and programmed.
- Easy to understand features/directions as long as you read the owners manual (for me it took about 10 minutes total for set-up).
- You can deactivate alerts. I live in MN and am not all that concerned about Hurricanes. :-) The alerts I do have programmed function beautifully.
- Nice size. Smaller than my CD alarm clock and reception comes in loud and clear without the antennae up.
- You have the ability to turn OFF the tone that sounds whenever you push a button. Surprisingly, this was one of the main reasons I chose this unit over its competitors.
- Decent volume control - on the lowest setting I can hear the alert throughout my single level townhome.
Cons:
- While I like the size, I do wish that it was a tad smaller. This is just my personal preference (and a sign of how much I like it) since having it slightly smaller would allow me to bring it camping.
- The system stores several alert messages, allowing you to scroll through them if say you missed one while you were at work. A 'delete' button would have been very handy (like an answering machine).
Overall, I give the unit a solid 4.5/5 stars. It has great features (though I think there's always room for improvement) and it's a fairly inexpensive way to gain peace of mind....more info - so far so good
Would be five stars except we haven't had any bad weather to test the alarm. Come to think of it, we haven't had any weather at all in Piedmont NC.
Fairly easy to program. No need to hire rocket scientist....more info - Best Yet!
We could never understand the verbal warnings on our old NOAA radio but this one comes in clear as a bell. It does take some serious attention to program it and to understand what each light means but I sleep peacefully at night knowing this radio will alert me to bad weather. I have one in the kitchen and one in the bedroom.....lovely that it can be programmed for only the counties that affect me too!
This radio can be programmed for everything from hurricanes to winter storms, floods, avalanche, etc. VERY complete! AND, the warning "siren" doesn't freak the dog out like the old one did!...more info - Believe the hype!
My wife is a Weather Channel junkie and she loves her new First Alert Public Alert Radio with S.A.M.E. This product is worth every penny, and with its four AA battery back-up feature, may one day prove to be a lifesaver. Purchased at the end of January, 2009, we have already received three severe weather warnings, all coming several minutes in advance of the advisories broadcast by the TV networks. We now enjoy instant up-to-the-minute local weather conditions at the push of a button. We recently took it with us on vacation in the mountains of eastern Tennessee, programmed it to that regions weather broadcast frequency, and tracked the massive southeastern snowstorm of March 01. From now on, whether traveling to the mountains or the shore, our invaluable First Alert Public Alert Radio with S.A.M.E. will be the first item packed....more info - Great Radio, Recommended.
I looked at several radios prior to this radio, I looked at the midland because of it's high amount of ratings, however I was looking for strictly a weather radio, I have other radios available if I need to hear an AM/FM radio. This unit is basic and to the point, it is a weather radio with an added alarm function, and I found it easy to setup. The first day I had it I received a severe thunderstorm warning and it worked exactly as expected. Also, this radio has the ability to choose which events you receive alerts for. Great radio. Great value....more info - Works fine!
I bought this to replace an older weather radio we had. The sensitivity is great, we live in a hilly region and it picked up two stations fine. It seems to be working well....more info - First Alert weather radio
Received our weather radio a few weeks ago. Easy to setup. Works great. We like that we can program it to the alerts appropriate to our area. Mostly, just tornado warnings, so we don't get awaken in the middle of the night for flood warnings and others in our area that wouldn't affect us. Great feature is being able to press one button and get our current forecast at any time. Highly recommend this unit....more info - works well, great price
I purchased this weather alert radio after the tornados that hit Kentucky several weeks ago. I wanted a radio that let me set which alerts you want it to notify you about and which counties you want to monitor. This is really helpful so it's not going off all the time. The only thing I don't like about it is the LED light that is always lit - it's bright enough that we can't keep it in the bedroom so we put it in the hallway outside the room and it actually works as a nice night light....more info - First Alert Weather Alert
Our older weather alert radio died, so when I was looking for another one I chose the First Alert Public Alert Radio with S.A.M.E by First Alert.I knew the name First Alert from the smoke detectors we have. It was a reasonable price, for a good product. The reviews on it were what sold me on the product, too. I like the idea that the sound is adjustable. The other one wasn't, and it was too loud if you were in the same room with it....more info - THIS THING WORKS GREAT!
Nice weather radio. It is not the most attractive design but it does the job. It is adjustable to your local weather bands and public alert systems. I think I would recommend this to a family member. I feel safer with this in my house....more info - So far, so good
I had been looking at the Midland model 300. But after a whopper t-storm rolled through the other night, I high-tailed it over to Circuit City for a browse. They only had this F.A. model, and it was hideously overpriced (CC is competitive on some products, not close on others...go figure). So I bought it. Set-up was easy. Haven't had any alerts yet. Will return for a revised review after the next storm hits....more info - Very Well Designed
This radio can be programmed not to sound alerts which are unimportant to me. For example, I don't want to hear flash flood warnings as I am not in an area prone to flooding. Basically, what I really want are tornado warnings when issued for three specific counties in Tennessee and one county in Kentucky. This radio can do that. (There are some alerts which cannot be blocked, but these are rare, for example a chemical hazard warning.)
The radio is fairly easy to program. It took me about 30 minutes to get everything the way I wanted it. It runs on AC power and has backup power provided by 4 AA batteries (not included). Overall, I rate this as a very effective, well-designed product, and I have just purchased some additional units for friends....more info - works great
We have used 2 other radio alerts that were not as easy to use and had annoying problems with lost signal beeps. This radio has preformed beautifully. Every home needs to have smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and a weather alert radio!! Lives can be saved!...more info - Great Item
I researched several weather radios and this is the one I decided on based on the SAME feature. I didn't want weather reports coming from all areas and this is a great feature for that. I bought two, one for myself and one for my college son. It was very easy to program. Based on another reviewers comments, I checked my batteries after three days while I had it plugged in and they still had full strength. A relatively inexpensive item for peace of mind!...more info - Easy to set up
This was very easy to program. What I like is that you can pick and choose which alerts you receive....more info - It just works
Does what I hoped it would - gets alerts and turns on a little light when there is an alert or warning for your area. You can listen to the alert or read summary on the screen. You can determine which alerts sound the alarm and which just turn on the light - what else you can want from a weather radio? The set up took under 10 minutes. Perfect.
Disclaimer - We just use it as a weather radio, not as an alarm clock or radio, so naturally I don't care about these functions and wouldn't know if there is a problem with them.
...more info - Buy This Weather Radio!!!! It is great.
We just bought this radio with SAME to replace an older radio that we first unwisely replaced with a GPX. This radio is designed well, is solidly built, and works well. Plus you can program in your own county and tell it which alerts you want sirens to go off for, and which ones you don't. An excellent value. This is the one you want, if the $40 range is do-able on your budget!...more info - added peace of mind
This product is a nice addition to helping our family be prepared in the event of a weather incident. I am pleased with it performance thus far....more info - Perfect NOAA Radio
After checking out the many weather radios available this one was the best one and at a great price. Many NOAA radios do not allow you to control the type of warnings you do not want to hear. In Eastern North Carolina tornadoes, especially at night are our biggest and most dangerous threat. We have many severe thunderstorms but they are not life/property threatening. With this radio we have turned off the warning for severe storms and are only notified of the possibility of tornadoes. Most people who have radios who cannot control the type of warnings they want to listen to eventually just turn off the warning capability of the radio thus defeating the main purpose of the radio. ...more info - Battery Problem
Great unit except....placed new alkaline batteries in it with switch set to alkaline. Unit has been plugged in with no power outages. Found today that batteries are all dead. Apparently this will use the battery power for some reason even when it is plugged in....more info - Really Like this First Alert
We really like this First Alert Weather Radio. We bought a Midland first, but couldn't get a signal no matter where we put it. We had a First Alert for years that was great and lasted several years, but we bought the Midland because at the time we couldn't find another First Alert. After the Midland mistake we searched and found this First Alert Public Alert Radio. We get a good signal and receive all of the alerts and warnings that we need. We live in North Texas and need a reliable weather radio for the scary Spring weather. I recommend this First Alert!...more info
