Customer Reviews:

  • So far this model is great
I see that others have had quality issues but so far my base unit and handsets have performed flawlessly. I am using the unit with a cell phone only so I can't comment on the land line features.

There are a number of positive attributes.

It is DECT 6.o so it operates in the 1.9GHz spectrum. I replaced an older Uniden 5GHz phone because I have an 802.11n 5GHz wireless LAN and the Uniden was causing interference. A DECT 6.0 phone will not interfere with any of the 802.11 b/g/a/n wireless LAN frequencies.

The sound quality is excellent! It is very hard to distinguish that you are using a portable handset that is basically acting as a bluetooth headset with the cell phone.

Sending keypad tones through the handset to the cell phone is also flawless. With the Uniden sending key touches would sometimes lock up the connection between the handset and cell phone.

This may be related to the iPhone but when I get an incoming call from the cell and the number is in my address book on the cell then the caller ID information is displayed on the handset even if the handset does not have any address book entries. The Uniden would only display the incoming number unless that number was also stored in each individual handset.

The handset is a very nice design. Comfortable with a nice keypad and display.

The unit supports a connection to two different cell phones with two separate numbers at the same time. Incoming calls from either cell phone are sent to the handsets. If two cell phones are connected at the same time and you want to make an outgoing call you are presented with a choice of which cell phone you want to use when making the call. If only one cell phone is connected it automatically uses the connected cell phone.

The only negative I have experienced is that I believe the base answering machine will only work with the land line connection. To me that's not necessarily a bad thing since unanswered cell calls end up with the cell answering system. However for people that want to use a single cell phone number as a "home" phone it would have been nice to have the option to have an unanswered cell call to connect to the base answering machine which has multiple mailboxes available.

A neutral comment is that the cell phone ringer and the handset ringers are completely different. The handsets are limited to the built in ring tones on the handset and are set individually for each handset.

Overall I recommend this device with the caveat that there may have been quality issues reported by other users. I love the idea that I can leave my cell phone charging near the base unit and then I have two portable handsets that I can answer and make calls on. I like being able to take the handsets outside while working in the yard or garage and not risk damaging my iPhone....more info
  • Mine is broken too
I really wanted this phone to work. It has some great features, and when it's functioning correctly it is a great phone. Unfortunately, as many people here have related it does not seem to have been thoroughly tested. We have the "I answer and nobody can hear me" problem. It's going back in the box and going back to the store. FAIL.

Don't buy it, it's not worth your time. If you do buy one, get it from somewhere that will readily take a return. The odds seem pretty high that you will be returning it....more info
  • Works great - when it works at all
If you like repeatedly having callers unable to hear your voice, this is the phone for you. I bought this phone and it consistently drops your voice on both outgoing and incoming calls. This can be fixed, sometimes, by unplugging the phone for several minutes and plugging it back in (after losing all of your settings, etc., etc.). I returned it to GE, they sent me a new one (after FOUR months), and the new phone does the same thing.

Very disappointing - especially because when it does work, the Bluetooth connectivity is great and the sound clarity is good. Nice extra features like room-to-room intercom, push-to-talk, and room monitoring. This product has potential, but it was poorly executed....more info
  • Awful!
This phone, while the concept sounds great, just doesn't work. I've had it for 28 days now and for the last 3 days, I can receive calls and make calls but I hear nothing. The phone rings, the caller can hear me, I hear nothing. I get no dial tone, yet a call I make goes thru and the receiver can hear me but I still hear nothing.
Customer support? I get to pay to mail the phone to the repair facility and they will get it back to me in 8-10 weeks. Who can go without a phone for 8 weeks? What do I do until then? Luckily I bought this phone locally and am within the 30 day return policy so it's going back today. I actually consider myself lucky that it didn't begin to malfunction on day 31.
Don't buy this unless you have money to throw away.
If you do choose to but this phone: save your receipt and buy somewhere local that has a good return policy!...more info
  • GE DECT 6.0---go with a different brand!!
Do not buy this product. It is riddled with problems. When it would ring we were unable to answer the phone, when you pushed talk it would cut off the caller. Additionally the base would keep resetting itself and we would loose everything. If you research this product online you will see many problems with this phone and apparently ge is no longer manufacturing phones.
I returned this phone (the amazon seller was teriffic about it) and bought a DECT phone from Vtech. It works great and have not had one single problem. A great solution if you don't want to be running for multiple phones through your home. ...more info
  • Sorry I bought it! Horrible customer service!
In spite of the negative reviews I found here, I ordered this phone with extra handset. Operating it, due to its many options and features, involves a steep learning curve. It is not very intuitive, and I consider myself to be moderately savvy with technology. You cannot download addresses from Outlook or any other addressing "contacts" software, but you have to enter each one individually, from your computer after connecting the handset via a USB cable. Nor have I figured out if it is possible to transfer contacts already entered in one handset to another, or from my Blackberry to a handset. After setting up the base unit and both handsets, with them working properly, I charged both handsets for 24 hours, arriving home to discover that handset #2 did not function at all -- no lights, nothing, although the base charger light was illuminated. Eventually, I swapped batteries with handset #1, and the unit worked. So I phoned the customer service number in the owner's manual, only to be directed to another number (not toll free). After a lengthy wait, "Cynthia" came on the line. Cynthia speaks in halting English that sounds more like a synthesized voice than anything else. After providing all my details and being asked inane questions ("After replacing the battery in the second handset, how do you know it was working?"), Cynthia informed me that she was sorry for the inconvenience and would be happy to help me if I would but package up the ENTIRE product -- base unit, both handsets, all cords and cables -- and return it to them JUST TO HAVE A DEFECTIVE BATTERY REPLACED. Now I understand that batteries are not covered under product warranties, so perhaps GE/Thomson/Cynthia were all doing me a huge favor in offering to make good on the defective battery. But I do not understand why the entire product had to be returned to do so. Meanwhile, I am getting all sorts of static inference from the working handset, even though this phone is supposed to be using DECT 6.0 technology. So my advice is, read the other negative reviews, listen to us, and buy another phone -- another BRAND of phone....more info
  • Very Convenient, Works Great
I have had this phone for a few months now, and it has become a necessity. I don't always hear my cell phone ringing when I'm home because it's usually in my purse or charging and I end up on the wrong floor of my house when my phone cell phone is ringing. I don't miss my calls anymore! So far it does what it says it does, no complaints.

I have not had any of the problems from other reviewers. I have using rayovac brand batteries and I'm not having any issues with the battery error message. Also it connects to your phone via a blue tooth connection. That means your cell needs to be between 2 and 10 feet of the base or you'll get bad reception or dropped calls. I haven't had any problems with the connectivity of it. My cell has been on the second floor of my house with the base on the first and it still has worked. My phone has never dialed out on it's own. If yours is you're probably pocket dialing with your cell....more info
  • Not Recommended
The display on the base unit malfunctioned after about 3-4 months of light use. I'm still waiting for cust service to repair/replace the base unit and its been over 2 months, and they claim it will be another 14-21 business days at least.

In all the years, we've had cordless phones by Panasonic, Sony, ATT, and never had a single problem with any of them.

The features on this phone are nice. It's unique with it's cell phone link, but not worth the trouble in my opinion.

Reliability is just not that good, given the competition. Not recommended (unless you're lucky enough to get a reliable one)....more info
  • Works
It works, but that's the only thing good I can say about it. I got it because they claimed you could add extra handsets. HA! You can't! I've gone through 2 and still the only handsets it will recognize are the ones that came in the box with it. If you only need 2 handsets and want to link your cell via bluetooth, it's a okay phone. But don't get it thinking you can add extra handsets because you can't....more info
  • I must be lucky, I got a good one!
OK, I see a lot of bad reviews on here so obviously this product has problems. I'm one of the lucky ones who got a good unit that passed quality control. I, too was attracted by the long list of features, and the ability to pair cell phones.

I must say that my 28128EE2 set is one of the best cordless phones I have ever owned, and I've had them going back to the 49 MHz days where you had to telescope the antenna out 3 feet then put it back in when you were done!

I have a 2 story house with basement, and both handsets work in all rooms of the house plus outside in my shed 80 feet in the backyard. I have an 802.11g wireless LAN and there is no interference. In fact, the base station is in the kitchen right next to the refrigerator and plugged into the same outlet (something they tell you NOT to do...) but still it works great.

I originally got this because of the cell phone issue, my wife gets all sorts of cell calls and she's constantly running around the house to the place where the cell phone is, only to get there and hear the "beep" that she missed the call. The feature of this phone was intended to allow her to pickup one of the handsets wherever she was and accept the call. The bluetooth feature works great. After we paired her phone (Mot W755) all we had to do is press the bluetooth button each time she set the phone down and it was connected. Call clarity was great all the time!

Unfortunately, my lovely wife is not a geek like me, and she doesn't really "get" the whole house-phone-ringing thing...("why when people call my cell does the HOUSE phone ring?" she asks...)

So alas we don't use the bluetooth that much; sometimes I use it for my cell phone. But as a cordless phone mine works great. I don't care much about ringtones or polyphonics so that's not an issue for me. One feature I REALLY LIKE is the alarm. You can set an alarm to wake you up on any or all of the handsets. Then the alarm plays one of the embedded MIDI's you select. It can be set to not too loud so that the whole house doesn't hear it. The BEST thing though, is that the handset is battery powered. So you can set the alarm confident that it will still work if the power goes out, unlike alarm clocks!

One reviewer said he liked the speakerphone. So do I. When you call a business, and are put in queue for 30 minutes or so, I just put it on speaker and set it down. It's loud enough that when a human finally comes on, you'll hear it. And if at that moment you're wiping baby's butt, you don't lose the call because you can just talk back and save yourself another 30 minute wait time.

Another testament to how nice these phones are: I have a 15 year old son who's the stud of his school...this means he's on the house phone 4-5 hours a night with all his honeys. He has a wired phone right next to his bed; but what does he do? He comes to my bedroom and steals my cordless! Battery life apparently isn't a problem for him. Imagine! A teenager's stamp of approval!

It's a shame that they made so many defective units, and that their customer service is so poor. I don't mean to rub it in to those who have had a bad experience, but if/when you get a unit that works, it really is a nice unit, and the ideas and feature set are fabulous. In fact, I'm buying another set off eBay just as a cheap way to add 2 more handsets... one for the boy and one for the basement rec room. I'm gambling that since I have a good base unit, adding 2 more handsets from the 2nd kit won't cause me problems, even if the 2nd base is defective. I figure I'm only using the 2nd base as a charger, so if the 2nd base speakerphone is a POS I'm still ahead.

After all, a 2nd kit on eBay is much cheaper than buying 2 extra individual standalone handsets.

If you are considering buying this unit, and can try it out to see if you got one that isn't defective, then buy it. When it works like it's supposed to, you won't be disappointed.

  • nice features but has problems, regret purchase
The phone has lots of nice features but it's a dud. I have experienced the same defect in all 3 handsets I bought as mentioned by another reviewer - which is that randomly I am unable to hear the other end of the call, even though the call has gone through. This goes for both outgoing and incoming calls. I sent all 3 handsets and the base unit to El Paso for replacement under warranty but I don't have high hopes. It's now 4 weeks and I've never even heard from them to acknowledge receipt of over $250 of electronics. In addition now I have no phones and no answering machine! When I called to check on the items, all the CS rep did was look on the USPS website to confirm delivery (which I had already done). He had no internal data about whether or not someone was actuall working on my problem. Don't go here!...more info
  • It was great until it broke.
All of the reviews are correct, it works great until it breaks. (Ours worked for about 4 months before it started acting up) Then all customer support will do is tell you to reset the phone or send it back in. That is after calling 4 different numbers (don't bother with the number listed in the manual unless you want to spend all day in menus).

to save you some time the correct # to call to speak to a person (as of today anyway) is 1-310-953-0113

don't bother with this phone unless you want keep sending it back for returns....more info
  • GE dect 6.0 cell fusion
I purchased this phone 2 days ago. It has not worked well.
    1. when using my cell phone line and talking on the handset callers complain that the last part of my word is cut off.
    2. At times when I go to use the handset there is no dial tone. I have to go to the base unit and push the speaker phone button and get a dial tone. After doing this I then am able to get a dial tone on my handsets.
    3. Started having problems with cell phones going through the headsets. So I took them off and tried to put them back on and the phone will not let me. It shows no cell phones on the base but it will not connect any. My cell phones recognize the GE phone but not vice versa.
    4. I have had to reset the base unit two times, but even this does not help clear all of there problems up.
    5. At times the phone echoes in my ear.

Back to the store this will go. I'm getting my money back!...more info
  • Easy Set Up - Good Voice Quality
Happy with this GE cordless phone purchase even though I feel it was overpriced and only comes standard with one additional handset. Phone has many useful features. For instance, it links with bluetooth devices; cell phones. Voice quality is exceptionally clear and distance signal strength is also very good....more info
  • Worthless....don't buy
I purchased this 2/28/2008. After a few weeks the problems started to arise. The phone handsets would not work, requiring multiple "resets" to the system. The bluetooth signal quality is lousy. Trying to reach GE is impossible. I am returning this to Amazon, despite a less than generous return policy and hefty "restocking fee". I would seriously recommend NOT buying this product. If you decide to, use a vendor with a more generous return policy. You WILL be returning it....more info
  • Great Product - Cutting Edge
I don't know why others are having so many problems, but after using this phone for four months I would rate it a strong 4 out of 5. It connects seemlessly with our two sony-ericsson cell phones each time we return to our home with them. Incoming and outgoing cell calls work flawlessly with any of our four remote handsets. Calls are clear and the speakerphone feature is loud and strong. It is new technology and I was surprised that GE seems to be ahead of their competitors with what I believe will be the next must-have device....more info
  • Worst Customer Care (GE Thomson) in History
Purchased a 28128EE2 and a 28101EE1 in Sep 2007. With in 3 months these products had failed. Contacted ThomsonGE many times until RMA was allowed in March 2008. It took until June 2008 to get the product replaced. They told me that only the improved and new version was available the 28129EF2. I agreed. The new product worked well but the additional handset finally arrived in July but it was a 28101EE1 which only worked with the original system. I called to explain that the phone which worked with the 28129EF2 was the 28101EF1 not the 28101EE1. They told me I was incorrect and sent me another 28101EE1 which again would not work. It is Sep 14 2008 and the issue still has not been resolved. MThompson, MD...more info
