Customer Reviews:

  • With VISTA this printer won't work as advertised.
Got it cheap... although the ink cost more than the machine. It works OK as a standalone but for some reason the driver locks up Internet Explorer and the advertised solution is to NOT have this printer as your default - if you have the L7680 driver as your default it will lock up IE when you exit.

Software won't work properly with VISTA. Can't scan using the software but have to do some funky workarounds to get it to do what you want.

This is NOT a VISTA ready project... and despite indications that HP was working on a proper driver, it has still not been forthcoming.

NO more HP products for me......more info
  • Ink not waterproof and fades quickly
The Vivera inks (#88) for the OfficeJet L7680 multifunction are highly touted by HP. What is NOT mentioned is that they are not water resistent (nevermind waterproof) and smudge easily with even damp hands. Further, rather that being "archival" the colors fade quickly, in mere months exposed to flourescent lighting. The unit itself works fine but do not even think about it for photo printing and think twice about using it for normal color business printing if you plan on handing it out to customers. It's way past the 30 days I can return now, but I would send it back if I could....more info
  • A disaster!
Bought this because I had always bought HP printers in the past and they had performed well. But not this one. It wouldn't work due to mechanical defect in the sheet feeder. After an hour on phone with HP they sent me a reconditioned one as replacement. Refused to send a new one. The replacement was also defective due to a different sheet feeder problem. Another hour on the phone. They sent me another reconditioned one. It's sheet feeder worked but by now the printer software was so screwed up on my computer I had to pay a PC tech to come and sort it out, which cost more than the printer! He said the HP printer software doesn't uninstall correctly. However, he sorted it out and I'm using the printer. It works more or less OK though with some minor annoyances (e.g., cuts off printing before end of some pages for no reason, faxing from PC doesn't work at all, etc.) Overall, a very poor product, lousy support. The last HP printer I will ever buy....more info
  • Small business owner
Works great as a business printer. Very fast output. However the photo quality is very poor. I had the Officejet D145 which had superior photo print quality. I am going to have to purchase a separate printer to print my brochures....more info
  • Worst HP ever!!!
This unit has never worked properly. First - software won't install properly in either Windows or Mac. I have never been able to use the various software features. Windows fails to recognise double-sided printing (though Mac does). Second, Scanning through document loader always leads to crooked scans. Third, after 6 months, fatal "printhead has a problem" arose. Google this and you'll see it's a fatal non-recoverable problem with the unit. Printer now junked. DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT! ...more info
  • Very Unreliable
Terrible software on both Mac and Windows. My Windows XP software on multiple machines will run away and use 100% of the CPU. I have to disable the service in order to avoid this. The Mac software fails to connect almost 50% of the time. I have tried updating to the latest version and contacting HP but nothing really gets fixed. I haven't had any trouble in Linux but maybe HP doesn't fix this software.

The machine jams a lot, the scanner is unreliable and jams with the feeder, the feeder scans routinely are crooked, it is slow, frustrating, and occasionally must reboot before using. A all around horrible purchase. I find that I frequently give up and just use an old flat bed scanner as this is more reliable....more info
  • Great Printer!
Before I bought this printer, I saw a good mix of reviews, but to be honest, I really didn't pay much attention to them as people only review products when they are disgruntled, not when they are pleased with a product. So, I decided to buy it and have not regretted my decision yet.

Overall, this is a great printer. I've had it for about a month now and have not had any issues. Networking is a snap (if you have even half a brain) and installs on both my vista (x64) and XP machines with no issue. In fact, you don't even need the install CD to enable networking, windows will do it for you, so I really can't understand why people are having such an issue with it...

Faxing works like it should, I can send and receive just fine, and the junk blocker feature is a plus.

Scanning and copying are easy, software is not hard to figure out. But the thing I like about HP all-in-ones is that the scanner will show up separately from the printer, so you don't have to use the software if you don't want to (I prefer Photoshop). Maybe I have a different generation of this printer, but as far as the 5 page limit goes, i haven't seen it yet, but we'll see...

Ink can be a bit on the pricey side (I buy all vivera XL), but what isn't these days!

Bottom line, if you're looking for a good home/office printer, this is a good choice.

  • GREAT SO FAR.......knock on wood
I bought this multifunction for my small office. Text printing is fabulous. The scanner works really well. I have not experienced any of the problems many seem to have with this product. I love it so far.....knock on wood....more info
  • D-O N-O-T BUY THIS PRINTER!
I have had this printer for a year and spent (I am sure) more than 60 hours of my time trying to get it to keep working. It especially does not work with laptops, because every time I disconnect it, the dumb thing dumps the driver, or something, and I have to reinstall the whole damb thing - which takes hours. I have spent hours with tech support and they walk me through it and then say some rediculousthing like, you will have to call back and ask for our "advanced" department, who I don't think exist as far as I can tell, because you just get the same idiots walking you through it again and again. I have Googled my issue (try a phrase like "driver reinstalling problems with HP L7680") and found dozens of people complaining about the same issue, and talking about the same frustrating experience for more than a year. Has HP fixed it? OBVIOUSLY NO.
I HAVE 4 HP PRINTERS AND HAVE OWNED THAT MANY MORE AND I WILL SAY THIS: AVOID HP! Their engineers who do a great job creating a highly attractive products, but they are buggy because they are just machines, and no company is built on attractive mechanics - it's built on customer service. HP appears to me to have no desire to invest their printer proceeds of sale back into fixing problems and helping their customers AFTER the money comes in. I can say that for my other 4 printers and my experiences with them and HP customer service. HP should have a customer service attitude for each printer model beyond a year, which is about how long it takes to know what the bugs are, but it seems like they let the product driver updates go just about as soon as they role out a model upgrade, which is about a year later, so if you are buying a product you want to use for a year or more, good luck.
I will look seriously at anything else if I could do it over again. Thanks for nothing HP. Shame on you with your "we could care less, we have your money" attitude. Follow up on your products and care for your custmers by fixing your problems, or you may just have no customers coming back!...more info
  • Great device
This is a great device for what it is. We have had no technical problems and the quality and features are great. We have multiple computers setup to use the 7680 as a fax, scanner, and printer. That would be extremely hard to do any other way. Even better, the front panel allows a lot of control without even using a computer - scan photos or multipage duplex documents to flash card, computer, or network storage, send fax, make copies etc...

My only gripe would be the photo scanning speed - it seems to scan the full glass at full resolution as a preview so it takes forever (5 minutes?). It does some cool things from there, like auto-detect multiple photos on the same screen, zoom, rotate etc... We've had a few minor issues which can be expected with a complicated and extremely versatile device like this. Haven't had to call tech support though - we would definitely buy it again....more info
  • Junk--Buy something else
Purchased about 9 months ago, and one of my print heads just failed. A replacement is $80 so I'm going to look elsewhere--this printer has taken years off my life it is such a failed engineering design experiment! I've had problems with the scanner (both getting it to connect and physically the scanner mechanism falling apart). Consistently scans "crooked" when fed in the document feeder; occasionally misses pages. THIS PRINTER IS A PROBLEM. PLEASE BUY SOMETHING ELSE AND SAVE YOURSELF THE HASSLE....more info
  • Recurring "paper jam" without paper!
I bought this to replace another HP all in one product that served me well. First printer showed up with ink cartridges in place - I should have been suspicious. During setup, before any paper was inserted, I kept getting a "paper jam" error instructing me to remove the rear duplexer. After dozens of tries and a call to HP, it was determined that the printer indeed had a "hardware problem". Printer was swapped out the next day. I have now spent another hour trying to set up the darn(!) thing & I am receiving the same error. Really, can it be me? Now I see that other reviewers had the same exact problem. Even if I can resolve it, it's going back. I don't need a high-maintenance office product that is going to fail when I need it most. So disappointing!...more info
  • Printer Yes - Scanner No
I stand beside the growing population of reviewers that are complaining about the scanning software for the HP Officejet Pro L7680. It does not work! I can get it to scan to hard copy but forget trying to scan to a file.

I can get this to work sometimes by uninstalling and reinstalling the HP drivers. Oh, what fun that is! Then I will go to use the scan-to-file feature several days later to find that it spontaneously reports "No Scan Options - Refer to device documentation to troubleshoot.". The documentation does not help as suggested by the error advisory so I surf the net and learn that uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them seems to work. It's easier to drive to Kinkos than it is to do this when I need to scan to file.

If you are considering buying this product to use for scanning documents to a file then YOU WILL BE SERIOUSLY DISAPPOINTED AND FRUSTRATED. Don't take my word for it, surf around yourself. It's amazing how many people have gone through the trouble to document this problem on review articles which indicates a very real problem....more info
  • Great Home Office AiO
I've owned this printer for over a year and according to it's internal webserver printed over 9200 pages. I have had only two paper jams during that time, which were a pain to remove. I use it in a PC and Mac home office environment. Early on I did have issues with Mac OSX 10.5 (Leopard) But a reinstall of the driver corrected the broken pipe errors. Vista has worked well with the printer, no issues to speak of. I really like the digital filing function and use it quite often to the vista computer. I have never needed to call customer service, however, according to the other reviews I'm not sure I would have wanted to if I did!

I am a little ticked at HP. This printer replaced a HP 1000 professional inkjet (that wasn't vista friendly). They kept the separate printhead/inktank design, but the ink tanks contain less ink. Compare the ink mL in the HP 10 (2200 page yield) cartridges to the HP 88 (850 page yield).

All in all, I have recommended this product to others, and they are just as happy as I am.

  • HP Fails yet again
this is the last time i will ever buy an hp product. not only did this product arrive dead in the box but after speaking with 3 people (none of which had english as a first language) i was asked the same questions over and over and not one bit of progress was made.
i don't care where the call center is, but if you sell a product in an english market to an english speaker for godsake, get some tech support that can speak to me so i can understand.
this is the 3rd bs product from hp and the last.
i have no review of the actual product because it never worked.

  • Poor network printer
If you want a printer that stays online, don't bother with this one. Everytime I need to print something, I need to shut the printer down, as well as my computer, to get a print-out. I've had it. I can't understand why technology that has been around for so long can't be made to work by a company with so much experience....more info
  • L7680 not all it is cracked up to be
Okay, so i needed to replace my laser printer, hit the stores, checked them all out.

i've had good luck with hp, love my 5550 photo printer, so went for the 7680. used the first one maybe a month before it started eating the paper as it printed. CS was polite, but of no help. Finally said i need this printer for work - i had a new one on my porch within 3 days. They paid shipping to me and for first ones return.

So far so good, but have the same complaints:
Noisey and won't scan properly. i can live with the noise, as the prints are nearly as good as the laser and the color is incredible, but the scanner not working properly is enough of a problem i won't purchase another one.

maybe gen II will be better.

  • Impressive-Fast
I have this unit for almost a week now and all I can tell is nothing but positive feedback. I am totally impressed with this printer. It prints fast and I mean fast. At 35ppm it is impressive to see the results. Laser like quality and excellent color. I bought this unit to consulidate my 3 other printers to one unit doing something good for the environment as well as space saving. The fax, printer, copier, scanner features are working like a charm. I am very particular when it comes to printing as I have been with the rest of my printers and so far this one is a true SOHO printer. At about 2300 pages per month with one cartridge which is the XL type, it is amazing how inkject have come a long way for such massive production. It is highly recommended.
I'm not sure why so many people have so much problem with this unit and I'm not exactly sure if this printer meets their expectation for that price. The truth is you get what you pay for and in my case paying $265 was worth the wait and new technology. Make sure you use the recommended paper. It is impressive when printed on HP White Bright Inkject with colorlok technology.

  • Great product for the price
I have gone through a few printers. For work, I do a lot of printing. This printer has lasted longer than most so far, and it's still going. It prints fast, and good quality prints. The display screen is nice. Setup is fairly simple. It's very user friendly. I love the USB slots. Only complaint - I have to set my margins smaller than I have in the past. For some reason it doesn't print to the far left side of the page. I've messed around to figure out why and can't find a reason, or solution. Not a huge problem, I only have to adjust to about 1/4 inch of the page. I think this printer is the best deal for it's price range. ...more info
  • I want to like this printer but ...
I've had this printer for a year or two. The print quality is ok. The features are very nice, scanner, copier, fax.

The problems that make it miserable are the driver and the ink.

The driver for XP was never right from the get go, constantly locks up and requires reboots of the laptop and lots of resetting of parameters to get the spooler to empty print jobs etc. Then everytime you print something it wants to phone home to HP to send you advertising and check for a new version of the driver etc. An awful mess, much like the driver for my last HP.

The ink is a misery. It sucks it fairly fast, and it is expensive from HP. I've tried the aftermarket and they generally work but once in a while the printer takes a hatred to a specific ink cartridge, once it hates it it will never accept it. So there you sit with a full cartridge that the printer won't accept and it says it is either empty or damaged or something is wrong. The little chip in the cartridge is the hate point, swapping them is sometimes successful. All in all this scheme seems very well focused at keeping you addicted to HP and only HP ink.

As for me I'll never buy another cartridge of ink from HP as long as I live. I'll find a way to go elsewhere. Or as it was in the movie Office Space, this thing is going to get the PC Load Letter baseball bat treatment and I'm switching to Canon....more info
  • Passable quality, forget about product support
As a printer and fax machine, this machine performs its functions. But the extraordinary amount of software (be sure to use the custom function when installing, and use the most minimum number of software products)and the truly abysmal customer service make this a product to avoid. (I had one customer service rep tell me the machine that I received the day before was out of warranty, and then hang up on me.)...more info
  • HP Office Jet Pro L7780 series
Where can I begin to say how bad this product (and support) is.

Firstly, if you are using it in wireless mode (e.g. physically connect it to a wireless router, and then use a wireless connection from your computer to print) this product is AWFUL. You have to un-install and re-install the software routinely!

Despite repeated calls to HP, and despite the fact that all the configuration information in the installation is ok in the control panel, something in the software is blitzed and you must re-install.

Un-installing is for some reason never straightforward, and that each HP support technician has their own method of uninstalling? Un-install and re-install is ridiculously time-consuming. In one year, I've installed and reinstalled software at least 10 times for a variety of reasons, including 2 printers that malfunctioned and had to be returned for replacement. Also, each time I've had to reinstall, it has taken several calls to HP support. No two suppport people do the same thing and I often heard that "the last person should have... and now we will ...."

I'm appalled by the thought that this printer is going to cost me even more money by having to either extend my warranty or purchase per-call support at the end of the year. This isn't even mentioning the extensive waste of time I've had calling support (an odd term for what you actually get) in the first palce.

The software portion of this printer (e.g. the driver on the computer) is a complete mess, I've had many, many problems with the scannign function on all three of the printers I've had in the last years.

HP support is really bad. I was so disgusted with HP support that I called HP to complain. Finally, after days of trying, I was referred back to the original "case manager" who already told me his hands were tied and that policy is policy. He could not extend my warranty (though I'd received 2 faulty printers and he couldn't upgrade my printer because it isn't "policy." He actually told me this printer is a "good one" and that there aren't problems on the market with it. Gosh, try reading Amazon and ask yourself why the printer is now 1/2 off!

HP evidently do not think it is their responsibility to provide software that actually works with their printers. I had an intensely frustrating and ridiculous conversation with an HP escalations manager. I said that you can't print or scan to a computer without software that works and that uninstalling and reinstalling isn't acceptable, and that therefore this printer is simply unusable without drivers that, you know, actually work.

When I asked to talk to a manager, I was told that "they are too busy to talk to you." When I sent a factual notice of the more than a half dozen cases that I had opened (never to be resolved) with HP in the last 2 weeks or so, the company referred me back to the case manager that orginally told me that he couldn't do anything, his hands were tied by "policy."
