Customer Reviews: - Not a real accounting program
I'm a sole practitioner CPA and maintain about 20 separate sets of clients' books in my office. Since both Intuit and Sage (Peachtree By Sage Complete Accounting 2007) have "professional advisors programs" which aggressively solicit CPAs to shill for their software, I should also state that I'm in no way affiliated with either of them, nor any other software company (the fact that it's necessary for me to mention this demonstrates where the accounting profession is headed, but that's another story).
I realize that I'm swimming upstream here, but I truly despise QuickBooks. My clients who use it routinely bring me sets of books which they have messed up so badly that I generate hefty fees by unraveling their errors. The reason, I believe, is that QuickBooks is not a legitimate double-entry self-balancing accounting package. I strongly suspect that it's merely a dressed-up, aggressively marketed version of Intuit's checkbook program, Quicken. Because of this, it's far too easy to make serious errors which the software itself will not detect. A few examples:
A single click will convert your books from cash basis to a sort of quasi-accrual basis. A client once brought me his books which had a cash-basis balance sheet, an accrual-basis P&L, journals and ledgers which were some of both - and he had no idea why nothing balanced (and if you don't know what I'm talking about here, that's all the more reason to avoid this software).
Another issue is that no QuickBooks accounting period is ever really closed. This "feature" allows my clients, many of whom don't really know what they're doing, access to prior years' files, all the way back, in order to "fix things." Consequently I constantly must check to be sure that prior years' balances, for which tax returns have already been filed, haven't been altered. This lack of program control over prior years' data is an inexcusable security defect.
Out-of-balance conditions are often forced to an account called "Opening Balance Equity," an account which frequently has entries appearing from nowhere. It's simply a program-generated force-balanced "plug," which is unidentified and untraceable. Beware the OBE account!!
Both Intuit and Sage have terrible tech and customer support. Both companies gouge their customer bases unmercifully by means of expensive annual payroll updates and discontinuance of support for older versions of their software. Nevertheless, I do my best to steer my clients toward Peachtree. It's by no means a perfect solution, but it's at least a "real" double-entry system, and therefore more idiot-proof, more powerful, and generally bug-free. The learning curves of the two programs are now roughly equal, since Peachtree has added an optional interface for non-accountants.
Finally, I'm not bashing the company, just this product. I've been using Intuit's professional tax return preparation software (ProSeries) for many years, and I'm entirely happy with it. But my bottom-line professional opinion in this case is that QuickBooks is simply not what it claims to be. Use Peachtree (Peachtree By Sage Complete Accounting 2007), use MYOB, use the new Microsoft package - any of which are preferable to this over-hyped and under-powered dog of an accounting program. I keep a recent version of QuickBooks on my computer ONLY as an accommodation to my clients who refuse to switch.
I originally reviewed QuickBooks 2001. As far as I can see, six years have changed nothing significant regarding QuickBooks Pro. One can hope the new upscale versions are better; me, I'm not going there unless forced to by recalcitrant clients.
...more info - Great for keeping the books
For those of you wanting to keep your financials neat and orderly this product works very well. No install problems at all and the program, with a little studying, isn't too overwhelming. My CPA does my taxes in no time with a copy of my company file and is able to make sense of something that used to be a mish mosh of various receipts, bills and dog eared post it notes...I give this 4 stars because it's an absolute memory hog and a dog to run on my pc. Really takes a long time to open and close but once it's open you don't mind too much. Fairly intuitive but it is a complex program so do your homework......more info - Microsoft Better than Quickbooks
We have been faithful users of Quickbooks for almost 10 years, however, we will never use them again. We recently upgraded our Quickbooks to the 2006 version, and had to buy a new computer. Quickbooks 2006 or earlier will NOT work with Windows Vista. I called them about the problem and they told me I would have to upgrade again even though my Quickbooks version is not even out of warranty yet! It is $200 to upgrade through them and they will give you $30 off if you have another version of their product. We are currently switching our books to Microsoft Office Accounting. Depending on your needs for your software, there is a FREE version of the software available. The Microsoft product has much of the same elements and layout as Quickbooks. And you can bet that since it is from Microsoft that it will be Vista compliant. It will also let you put all of your Quickbooks information into it from a back up disk or from the file itself. I will NEVER use an Intuit product again!...more info - Difficult to Learn and Not for Every Business
This software is very difficult to learn-as-you-go. I am a former Quicken user and while that was easy to fumble through while learning without too much fear of making a far reaching mistake, Quick Books is laden with important-seeming details and hard-to-master steps and pre-labeled categories that don't seem to be applicable to my business. This software may be very helpful for a business that buys widgets from the widget wholesaler using an invoice and then sells the widgets to a customer using a bill of sale. It doesn't do much for someone who sells his services on commission without using invoices or bills. Self-employed professionals need not buy this software. Even the check register is harder to use and almost impossible to customize than Quicken was. I do not recommend this software at all.
...more info - Faulty product - wait for QB 2008!
I'm an accountant with over 20 years of experience and 8+ using Quickbooks. This version (2007) is a disaster! I recently was forced to upgrade a client to QB 2007. I have NEVER had so much trouble installing any other version of Quickbooks! I was able to solve all the issues myself, with the help of their ProAdvisor's forum, but I'd never recommend it for the average business user. Second, after a month of use, I found the software was incorrectly calculating payroll deductions and a cash summary account balance did not add up to the sum of the cash sub-accounts (an impossibility if the program were written or functioning properly). I finally dumped 2007 and begged the client to go back to 2006 and wait for QB 2008 to come out in Dec. 07'. What a nightmare!!! Quickbooks support has been awful (even for me, a ProAdvisor) and I can't imagine what the average customer could expect. I've never had serious problems with any other version of Quickbooks, but this one is terrible. DO NOT BUY! ...more info - Problems
I have trouble with this product and vista. I am unable to update mercchant services....more info - This is the one!
This is perfect for a small business to keep track of virtually everything! From sales taxes to inventory, customers to vendors...you can keep track of it all! It's start up interview makes it so easy to use that anyone can be successful with the set up process....more info - vista is not working with this
I can't print from my laptop that is vista and when hitting on the link it doesn;t do anything. I need help to get this to work. i wouldn't recommend this. ...more info - Unbelievable Value
I run six companies off Quickbooks, and thanks to this amazing program all are well organized. Real time information is always available, it is easy to analyze issues, and if you have a basic understanding of accounting the program is easy and intuitive to use. This is a property management company so I do not have inventory or employees so I can't vouch for those functions. But billing and collecting from tenants are a breeze and the memorized transaction function saves a huge amount of time. My only gripe is they made me upgrade to the current version when I switched to a Vista based PC. It is truely unbelievable how powerful this program is for $149. I highly recommend this product....more info - Forced to upgrade to Pro 2007
I was very happy with my QuickBooks Basics. But for whatever corporate reason they no longer support the Basics version, so I was forced to upgrade to Pro 2007. It is MUCH slower than Basics, it's more complicated to back-up (it asks SO MANY questions), also it takes longer to print a simple check (again TOO MANY CLICKS before it prints...)...more info - Quickbooks Pro 2007
It's probably the best available, but Intuit, the company that produces Quickbooks likes to put obstacles in your way before you can use their product. Before the Quickbooks can be used, the purchaser must log onto their website and jump a number of hurdles, which include denying their attempts to rope you into buying updates you don't need and services that may not be appropriate to your business. A fine example is their payroll service, for which you need to scrutinize the options they set out for you before you find the small print that allows you to finally refuse all their payroll services and move on with the activation of your software....more info - Probably good value
I don't think there is easy accounting software, but this is probably the best for the buck. True to Quicken Style there is always something else to buy. We Bought Quick books and Payroll and it does a pretty good job.
Cons: Amazon took 2 weeks to even box & ship. Payroll only supports forms for federal reporting you are asked to buy an up-grade to get the state forms for reports. We thought that was cheezy....more info - A must for any business owner
Keeps track of all your sales, also has journals, credit cards and banking statements can be downloaded automatically through online banking within the program. It also reconciles and matches automatically. Invoices and estimates can be customized with your own logo. A great business tool! I wouldn't be able to survive without it!...more info - Another one bites the dust.
The product is great, calling tech support is a task though. Intuit outsources thier call centers overseas and it is difficult to communicate with thier support people by telephone. If this product wasn't preffered by my CPA I would never buy it ever again. Boycott companies that outsource to other countries, keep our jobs at home!!...more info - Quick Books Pro 2007 purchase
This was a wonderful savings to our business! This product retails for over $300 and I got it for under $200. Great deal!...more info - Stops working after 30 days!
I was shocked to find that my purchased software stopped working after 30 days. They force you to register by calling in.
If you don't you can't use the program. If you are offended by forced registration - don't purchase this software....more info - Always a winner
I bought this for work. I am very satified with all of the QuickBook products that I own. The changes are all for the better....more info - The new 2007 QuikBooks Pro
As an owner of a construction company; QuickBooks Pro 2007 is one of the best accounting software for my business. It organizes my accounts and provides me with all the reports I need....more info - Horrible version of QuickBooks
I'd give this product zero stars if I could.
I use the QuickBooks online payment service with version 2004, and last week it started telling me that they were discontinuing support for version 2004 with that online service, so they forced me to upgrade.
So I bought the upgrade, and when I ran the installer it wouldn't accept my serial number. I spent forty minutes on the phone with tech support on a choppy line to India, and he still couldn't get it to work. I finally gave up when the next step he proposed was to disable all of the services running on my computer.
I had heard from others, including an accountant, that this version was bad but couldn't believe it would really be this bad. I'd used QB since the early-1990s and never really had a problem. But this is really, really bad.
Intuit needs to go back to the drawing board with this version. It's a TOTAL LEMON....more info - Necessary, and happy
I needed to upgrade from an older version, both for my accountant and for some features of QuickBooks (like emailing invoices for free, etc.). I'm very happy with the upgrade so far....more info - Owner
I upgraded from the 2003 version with no major problems. The 2007 version is a bit easier to use and works just fine for my small business. The security, however, is not great for a mid-sized company. Since my accountant fully supports the product, they are always available for support....more info - A forced upgrade
Ok, I ran my business just fine using Quickbooks Pro 2004. I even used Quickbooks for payroll processing and direct deposit. No problem.
Then comes along the email messages... my current copy will soon become obsolete, no longer supported, and I won't be able to use their payroll processing.
But wait, there's a solution... just buy our latest version.
No discounts for current users, ouch. At least I can save $50 by going through Amazon instead of the Quickbooks site. Quite sad really.
The software works just fine. It's been reformatted and it doesn't take too long to get used to it, but I'd rather focus on growing my business instead of learning software I'm forced to upgrade.
...more info - QuickBooks Love Hate Relationship - Insight From Long Time User
Love the program.... Hate the company!
I've been using QuickBooks for more than 10 years. I started with the basic edition since I am a very small business and use only a portion of the program, specifically Customer and Vendor Lists, Invoicing, A/R and Purchase Orders.
OVERKILL is an understatement... QuickBooks Pro is much more powerful than I need. I don't use Payroll, Check Printing, Year End Accounting and many of its other functions. SO WHY DID I PURCHASE SUCH A POWERFUL PROGRAM?
That's the "rub". Intuit is not satisfied with its QuickBooks users being content with the edition that they are using; Intuit sales people call all too frequently trying to get you to upgrade to the next higher version (edition) of their program. They hounded me for years to upgrade from the early basic edition to the then current basic edition; finally, they dropped support of the product and I had no choice.
I purchased QuickBooks 2005 Basic Edition in 2005. Shortly after purchasing it, they informed me that they were no longer going to support the 2005 Basic Edition and if I wanted continued support I would have to upgrade again, this time to the Pro Edition.
This January (2007) I received an email from Intuit informing me that my 2005 Basic Edition wouldn't run on the new Windows XP Vista platform and if I switched to Vista I would need to upgrade to QuickBooks Pro. I upgraded to a new PC in February as the result of a major crash on my former system and opted to go with Vista, thinking that I could install Windows 98 as a second operating system to run QuickBooks 2005 Basic. The second operating system didn't work out and, after seriously considering switching to Microsoft Accounting 2007, I purchased QuickBooks Pro.
I was very disappointed that Intuit didn't offer a significant purchase incentive to existing users; but they never have in all the years that I've been using their product. Even Microsoft, the shark of sharks, offers incentives. DON'T BE MISHEARTENED.
I purchased the program from Amazon and, with rebates and other purchase incentives, saved $60 over Intuit's price; I could have saved an additional $25 if I had bought on eBay (had I known it at the time).

This is an ugrade for us. We had hoped that some of the upgrade would be more robust. Looks prettier, but not a lot of substance....more info - Does not work with Vista OS
I installed quickbooks pro 2003 on my new computer running VISTA and had a small problem. So, I bought an upgrade to 2007 since Intuit says it works with VISTA.
It does not. The software crashes at odd times. It also crashes when attempting to call up invoices from the accounts receivable report. It reports out of memory errors and closes two to six times each day. I have set up my old computer, which runs XP, so I can use the new software until they fix all of the glitches in the 2007 version. I recommend NOT buying this version if you are running VISTA OS.
Update: This version works with VISTA. It took some time to determine the problems. So, it works but is slow to load....more info - Quickbooks 2007 Pro
The product gets the job done, however, the program is now 770mg and my backup files are 3x as big as they were with Quickbooks Basic 2004. I would not have upgraded if not for the payroll service. I did not have any installation problems that some others have reported.
...more info - Great for the price
I have used QB Pro 2004 for my business for several years. I upgraded to QB Pro 2007 several months ago. The upgrade went without any problems. I did backup everything before upgrading (I would recommend that you backup the entire QuickBooks folder, just using the QB Backup within the program backups only your company file and not any custom letters, invoices, etc.). I use most of the features in QB Pro. QB Pro 2007 is very user friendly and they have streamlined it quite a bit (i.e. the new interface introduced in 2006) so that you have a fewer number of mouse clicks to access the information you require. I been involved in several major software projects in my career...for what QB Pro does for the price...you can't beat....more info
