Product Description
Block out irritating background noise and enjoy your music in peace, with these premium range headphones which actively cancel background noise by as much as 85%. Smart noise cancelling technology enhances the pleasure of listening to lower volume levels in noisy environments. It's particularly good at removing low-frequencies like jet engine noise, so you can enjoy soft music on flights, in trains and similar places without hearing a distracting buzz in the background. The technology actually creates an equal but opposite waveform to the unwanted noise that effectively cancels it out. The mute switch allows you to pause the noise-cancelling function and 'audio in' signal to allow for quick conversations without removing the headphones. The ear cushions are very soft, and enclose the speakers around the ears to create a perfect seal and great sound. With very little pressure on the ears, you can use the headphones comfortably for long periods. The easily adjustable mechanism headband provides a comfortable close-fitting acoustic seal between the ear cushion and ear, ensuring optimal performance. The speaker drivers used in these headphones utilise the very best neodymium magnets to meet those high expectations and repeatedly deliver an unforgettable performance. Single-sided detachable cable for added convenience Super soft ear cushions provide prolonged comfort Frequency response - 20hz-22khz Includes AAA battery, audio jack adapter and carrying case

Customer Reviews: - (very quick) unboxing. what does it come with?
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R15PA8UOEG359H Philips SHN9500 Active Noise-Canceling Headphone...more info - excellent value
I bought a slightly lower-end model of Philips noise-cancelling over-the-ear headphones at a big-box electronic store and returned them because they were uncomfortable. I then picked up the SHN9500 from amazon.com for only $5 more. This model is more comfortable (much more padding on the headpiece). It also comes with a hard case, folds flat, has a removable (thus replaceable) cord! It includes some real niceties that the other model lacked. Overall I'm very satisfied. This model has a great bang-for-the-buck factor....more info - Phillips noise cancelling earphones
I bought these ear phones for a trip to San Francisco with a room mate who snores loudly. They didn't cut out the snoring much, but were great
on the flight in reducing the noise of the plane engines. The music quality was very acceptable too. Very comfortable to wear and well made. I like them....more info - AMAZING
This is a great headphone. The sound quality is great, and the price is amazing. I got this when it was 32.45! so the entire order was 42. I bought it for my girlfriend so she can use it to study and enjoy her music. She loves it! she said that the noise in her living room (she has 2 younger loud siblings) we greatly reduced but not eliminated. I have just borrowed them for the weekend, and WOW they are amazing. Currently I am ordering them as of right now, even though the price is 20 dollars more than when i orginially got them, should have got 2 of them then. But it doesnt matter, for this high quality built, super comfy headphones with leather pads that feels like pillows, amazing sound with Noise cancelling , and decent working noise cancelling that corresponds to what was stated on the box 85%. I gotta say these are the best headphones i ever bought, and now I'm getting another for myself!...more info - Philips SHN9500
Can't say I am too happy with these headphones. I prefer my previous pair (Sony MDR-NC6). I believe the noise cancelling feature was much better than Philips which at times not only sounds distorted but volume decreases when I turn the feature on. I will say the Philips is very comfortable and comes in a great hard case....more info - It doesn't cancel noise
I have not used these for playing music. I was looking for a way to block expressway traffic noise while trying to read. The "white noise" sounds similar to traffic and seems to aggravate the traffic noise distraction....more info - fantastic value for money
I just made a 13h-plane trip with my SHN9500 and it was fantastic. All the low frequency components of noise are GONE, with that insulation, the resulting sound quality of the plane entertainment system was unic!...more info - Great Headphones For The Money
I've used these headphones on several flights in the past month and I am impressed with their noise-canceling ability and comfort. I've tried the latest Bose headphones at an in-airport kiosk and was pleased with their noise-canceling as well, but couldn't justify spending that much on a pair of headphones. For less than a quarter of the price of the Bose headphones, these Philips deliver impressive noise cancellation and decent music quality (though the bass tends to be a little soft when noise-canceling is turned on). So if you're looking for a decent set of headphones to quiet your plane rides for not much money, I'd recommend these over the Bose any day....more info - Great product! Highly recommended.

FINAL NOTES
These headphones are built well and produce great sound, as I would expect from a Philips audio product. The Philips SHN9500 is definitely worth every penny....more info - Great Value
For the price the product is very good. It does not cancel all noise but reduces significantly. Bought these for our kids on plane trips. They work great....more info - Phillips Noise Canceling Headphones
An excellant headphone. Well worth the money. Compares to the Bose but for much less. Very comfortable to wear for long flights....more info - It doesn't cancel noise
I have not used these for playing music. I was looking for a way to block expressway traffic noise while trying to read. The "white noise" sounds similar to traffic and seems to aggravate the traffic noise distraction....more info - A good buy
As a student I was looking for headphones to help with music and video gaming and yet not spend tons of money. Now since each of these areas are their own separate entities I'll review the headphones for both separately.
FOR MUSIC:
First off let me say that unlike most people my age who attend college, I don't listen to rap and heavy metal all the time. I actually have a good selection (over 1,000 songs) of classical pieces. Now I would consider myself an audiophile: a music library that well exceeds 40GB and covers many different genres from folk to acid metal to classical. These headphones, yes I will admit it, are not the best. They are a bit bass heavy for the lighter music. There is a bit of clearing when the sound dampening is on but there is still more bass then mid or treble. The sound reduction is really very nice, people sound very muffled and quiet at normal talking voices most of the time (around 60-70 decibels). Now for music these headphones aren't the best yes that's true, but for a student who wanted something well made for cheap these are great. The zippered pouch is perfect for carrying them in your backpack so they don't get damaged.
FOR GAMES:
These headphones are AMAZING. I play games like counter strike and these are perfect for hearing people before you see them. With the sound dampening on it feels like the headphones create zones so if they're behind you and to the left you'll know it. The extra bass ensures you'll hear everything moving around even from a distance. Whenever it's late and I can't use my speakers I throw these on and the cushioned ears ensure you can wear them for hours without pain even with glasses.
All in all if you're an audiophile looking for headphones and you have a few hundred to throw down, don't get these. You'll miss the loss of the upper registry and fine tune frequencies even with sound dampening. And while many people have pointed out Bose, which if you want a name you can get. I would check others for top end noise canceling and audio delivery such as sony or Sennheiser. If you're a student or a gamer looking for good headphones for not a lot of money then get these, they'll be great....more info - Very Good!!!
 Love it.
The product complies with the promised.
We can not compare it to Bose, but does its part and is really Canceling noise. Amazon's price is excellent.
Beautiful packaging and protective cover very well finished.
Readily recommend this product....more info - Comfortable and suitable even for office
I bought Philips SHN9500 to use in my job. I actually don't mind the usual office noise much, but I do mind the street noise. These headphones do not filter out all noise, but cut out low frequencies, so the noise level drops. Even normal speaking is much softer now, although I'm still able to hear people speaking.
Headphones work even without a battery (in that case the noise-cancelling is of course off). They are also very comfortable, suitable even for a prolonged use and offer very good passive noise isolation.
...more info - excellent product , especially for the price
I bought these at Costco without benefit of reading the various reviews here before hand. I was pleasantly surprised with the audio quality - no they don't rival $300 audiophile equipment - duh! But they do offer completely acceptable sound. On some recordings I found it necessary to cut the bass boost to prevent distortion, or modify other tone controls for best sound. My only criticsm was a slight rattle when walking - which turned out to be the battery - a small piece of foam fixed that. As for noise cancellation - again very adequate - I spend 2 hours a day in a commuter van - and these completely remove the tire roar, wind noise, and most other racket. I tried switching the noise cancelation on and off and the difference is night and day ! A wonderful pleasure to have something actually work well, as designed, and as advertised, at a reasonable price. Kudo's to Philips !! ...more info - Great buy for the money.
I purchased these for flying to cut down on some of the noise. I read many of the other reviews about these, and they are primarily compared to the Bose QC headphones. I KNOW that these will not be comparable, but at the same time, I can have 8 pairs of these sent to me for the price of just one set of the Bose. These are very comfortable, and easy to use. I wish there were a volume control on the cord, but that is something that I can add easily later. I have had much more enjoyable flights after purchasing these. They have pretty decent response overall, and fit nicely. The case is nice, and I can even fit my iPod nano 3g in with it. I have used them for about 20 hours and the battery sent with them is still going strong. Overall, a good choice for the price. ...more info - philips noise cancelling headphones
I'm very disappointed with the performance of this product. I could have had a pair of headphones for a lot less money than I paid for something I thought was going to cancel noise. At the very best, it minimizes noise but I am still able to hear all that is going on around me, voices, equipment running, walking on floors, doors opening and closing, phones ringing, etc. This product is not effective in its intended purpose which is to "cancel noise". I would not buy another one of these or recommend them to any one....more info - Nice Product
This is the first set of noise cancelling headphones. And I have to say, I like them a lot. I just used them last week on a 4 hour plane trip and didn't really even need to turn the power on. ...more info - Bose performance for realistic price
Tried these side-by-side with Bose ANC headphones. These had the same noise reduction (at least to my ears) and were more comfortable. These are light, comfortable and made to be relatively low profile for over-the-ear phones. I'm happy....more info - Comfortable and Adequate
They are comfortable to wear and do a decent job at canceling abient noise. But if one is expecting headphones that cancel all noise, these are not going to do the job. ...more info - Excellent Headphones for the money
I got these headphones about a month and a half ago and they were much better than i was lead to believe. The headphones themselves are very comfortable and are perfect for extended use. I have relatively large ears and wear glasses so normal headphones tend to hurt after a while because they press against the glasses and my ears. The headphones themselves keep out a surprising amount of ambient noise but with the noise-canceling turned on any steady noise in the background gets dampened quite a bit. Probably about 75% of the CONSTANT background noise gets erased, however, voices or other music can come through if they are loud enough. The noise-canceling feature doesn't account for noise like that. One problem i have noticed with the noise-canceling is that it tends to reduce the sound quality of the music you are listening too. With the noise-canceling turned off the sound quality is very good even though it doesn't have the frequency response of more expensive headsets. Human hearing only spans 20hz-20000hz(on average). Other aspects about these headphones are the cord. It is only a few feet and is very small in diameter. It also unplugs from the headset for easy packing. I much prefer this to the 8+ foot long headset cords that are 1/4th an inch thick. Overall this is a very good headset for anyone on a budget. These certainly aren't the best headphones on the market but for $35 they are definitely worth getting....more info - The Best NC Headphones I've Had!!
before i get to my review of the phillips shn9500's let me review my two previous NC headphones.
my first pair were the sony mdr-nc6. pretty good pair. the noise cancelling and sound quality was pretty good. they were very uncomfortable however. they used the old foam that just covers over the speakers instead of the leather covered "comfort" foam used on most big headphones these days. i have no idea what would make them use that inferior material in the first place. they were very hard on the ears after about an hour of use. the battery case was in a good place, much better than the maxell nc-ii's spot (see below), but not better then the phillips shn9500. they were pretty heavy and clunky too. overall they were about 3 stars.
they maxell nc-ii were HORRIBLE. here is a copy of my review:
this was my second pair of noice canecelling headphones. my first pair were made by sony, but can't remember the model. the noise cancelling was not as good as the sony's but they are far more comfortable...EXCEPT FOR THE ON-CORD BATTERY HOUSE/NOISE CANCELLING CONTROL!!! that was the dumbest part of this product!!! it just hangs heavily from the headphones unless you put it in your pocket. then it takes up valuable pocket space, especially in the summertime when you don't have coat pockets to put some things in. the sony pair had the battery housing and controls built right on the head phones. i read in another review that this is a belt clip...don't believe the hype. there is no clip on this thing. the sound was mediocre and the noise cancelling was inferior to the sony.
also, as previously stated, my left ear is gone. sometimes it comes on when the cord gets bumped around in my pocket to the right position, but otherwise it is gone. i don't know how something like this could happen after a few months of use, but it is not a good thing. i checked to make sure it wasn't my ipod that was broken by putting the headphones in my computer and sure enough it was the headphones.
now on to the phillips shn9500:
by far the best pair i've had yet. the only reason i didn't give them a 5 star rating is because i'm quite sure the noise cancelling isn't the best, in comparison to bose and seinnheauser and the likes. but even still these were a great deal (i paid $[...] and they retailed for $[...]). the comfort level is phenomenal. when i first saw the picture i thought that they would not be comfortable because of the oblong shape. however, that oblong shape is what makes them so comfortable. it's long like that because it allows your entire ear to fit inside. once inside there is no pressure on them due to the slanting interior that allows the entire outer edge of your ear to fit inside, instead of the cushion resting on them. with the maxell nc-ii's the cushion was soft on your ear, but after a while you begin to notice that they're there. it didn't really hurt, but was slightly uncomfortable, but bareable. with this there is nothing resting on your ears. the cushion rests entirely AROUND the ear. not even the bose quietcomforts fit like this.
the sound quality is nice. however it is slightly compromised when the noise cancelling is turned on. but it's not that noticable.
the noise cancelling is the best i've had out of all 3. phillips claims an 85% reduction, and i believe it. of course, as previously stated, it doesn't block out all noise, but it definitely reduces it.
extra features include the mute button, which is very convenient for quick question answering or 30 second conversations. definitely better then sliding them off your head or pressing pause (unless your watching a movie or something). the battery housing is inside one of the earcups which makes it invisible. and the detachable cord is very very very cool. i read in other reviews that the detachable cord was nice, but they never said why. well here you go. you can detach the cord from the headphones and plug it into the aux jack on your car (on 2006 models and later) or any other jack that allows input from this type of cord. it didn't hit me until i got in my car yesterday that that's what the detachable cord is for. not to mention it's less obtrusive if you wrap it around your ipod instead of trying to carry it with the headphones.
the short cord that some people mentioned as a con is a pro for me. simply put it's not in the way. the sony cord was so long i had to wrap it up in a rubberband. the maxell cord just was not only long but it had the stupid batter housing on it. i can easily buy two headphone extensions and keep one in the case and one at my computer.
speaking of the case, it's hard and not a baggy as i've had with my last 2 pair. it has a seperate pouch inside that keeps the stereo jack, airplane jack and the detachable cord inside. this is where i would keep my extension cord. ...more info - Great little System
These headphones are AMAZING for what I paid for them! I mainly use them in my office which I share with 2 women, so in order to concentrate I just throw these badboys on, turn up the music and I'm in my own little world. They usually have to kick my chair to get my attention, IT WORKS THAT WELL! If you're looking for something on the low end price-wise but don't want to lose much quality, these are the headphones for you....more info - it`s a good deal
it`s a good deal, I mean, though it`s not as good as boss, but it`s cheap, with this money, it`s excellent...more info - A very good design for the money.
Im not an audiophile so I cant give you any technical reasons for getting these headphones.
But, I do use them every day & I sleep with them on nearly every night & they are very comfortable. However, I have smallish ears & a person with large ears my not find them so comfortable.
They are light weight, fit snuggly onto my head without too much pressure, the cushions are soft & conforming & they sound great to me. I get very adequate noise-canceling & surprisingly good/rich highs, lows & mid range.
I like the shape of these over the ear headphones because they arent the typical round can shape that usually comes into contact with say a pillow or head rest when you lie back.
Another great feature is the ability to disconnect the 'cord'. You can still use the noise-canceling feature without it & unlike my last set of headphones, if the cord becomes damaged, you can simply get another cord.
The mute button is a very good idea & I really like the carrying case as well. Its of very good quality & not just some 'bag'.
These headphones do not have a volume control but I purchased the KOSS VC20 remote volume control for around $7 & it works perfectly as well as gives me plenty of extra cord length.
For a price under $75 Im very satisfied with these headphones & believe paying more would have been completely unnecessary....more info - Very nice for the money
Replaced an older, less expensive set of Philips N/C headphones with these. These are comparable at cancelling noise but are better constructed. Major improvements are 1) much increased comfort due to better padding and 2) the ability to remove the dangling cable when you're not listening to music. I use these while reading on airplanes, so can't comment on the music sound quality....more info
