  • A Beautiful Mind
This is an excellent movie and a great teaching tool. It vividly portrays Schizophrenia to those who are unfamilar with this condition.

  • A Beautiful Mind?
A fascinating movie with interesting plot twists. I'm not sure I would use the adjective beautiful to describe his mind. At least there's a happy ending....more info
  • Beautiful Insight
This movie is probably my favorite movie of all time, and that's saying a lot due to the fact that I own no movies but this one and do not own a tv or even go to the movie theater ever. It is rare that you see such a well put together film that takes you into the agonized mind and thoughts of someone suffering from a psychotic disorder. This is a definite must see and addition to your video collection....more info
  • Well done
John Forbes Nash has the ability to see patterns in math and nature that are ordinarily overlooked. He presumably is pressed into using his ability for the government. Alicia comes into his world and as with many great loves; she sees what others call weird, as a cute uniqueness. We follow their courtship and then life together.

It is the little things and the interaction among friends that make the movie. This movie captures your attention from the beginning. You may be able to anticipate what is happening however it is not meant to be a dark secret with a twist ending as much as letting you in on what he is going through to survive. All the characters are fleshed out and you feel that you are there. This movie leaves a good after taste.

  • A Powerful Story
In a day and age where many movies are simply fluff, this movie has shone beyond many others in being profound, moving, and overall a powerful story. It gives us a great survey of complex human emotions, mental illness, perseverance, love and ambition.

The character development is wonderful. Paul Bettany is simply FANTASTIC here. Particularly vivid in this film is the portrait of a genius gone schizophrenic (Russel Crowe) and a loving wife who is at her wits end but still responds in a loving and caring way (Jennifer Connelly).

The setting of this film, being Princeton, adds to the overall esthetics of the film. The scenery is simply marvelous!

I highly recommend this movie!!...more info
  • Great movie
I only saw this movie because my boss told me that I was like John Nash ( I was a research chemist) and now retired. I have an IQ which fluctuate from idiot to genius and can solve problems no one else have been able to solve. I have an overactive imagination as well. My opinion of mathematicians is they sometimes confuse mathematics with reality. A mathematical equation is not reality like many mathematicians think it is. Its easy to get trapped into thinking it is. I am a conspiracy nut and sometimes read people wrong. It is because I really was drugged and brainwashed by the government for knowing things I was not suppose to know. My former wife accused me of being schizophrenic and wanted me to get help. I think this movie is part of a conspiracy to cover up the fact people really are drugged and experimented on by the government and the government wants the public to think these people who claimed to have been experimented on with mind control are actually suffering from various brain disorders. But when they really are out to silence you it makes you paranoid. This movie was very informative. I had no idea so many respected Ivy league colleges and Universities were involved in the type of work portrayed in the move. ...more info

  • Movie Version of the Book by the Same Title
As I usually try to do, I read the book prior to seeing the movie. The book was much clearer than the movie but I thought the movie was very well done.

The movie is about the Nobel Prize winner in economics, John Nash. It stars Jennifer Connelly and Russell Crowe, John Nash is a Princeton student when he develps Schizophrenia. The movie is very accurate in its portrayal of delusions and hallucinations, though it was sometimes confusing - especially the part about whether his roommate really exists.

Both Crowe and Connelly do excellent jobs. The movie goes light on Nash's bi-sexuality, does not go into his having a deadbeat dad, and ignores his relationship with Eleanor Stier. Other than these things, it is pretty true to the book.

Nash does have a beautiful mind. Once he starts losing his mind due to the tragedy of schizophrenia, it is heartwarming to see that he maintains the respect of his Princeton colleagues and students. I applaud this movie for raising peoples' consciousness about schizophrenia.

I highly recommend this movie for anyone who enjoys drama and is interested in mental illness and resilience....more info

  • Fantastic Movie
This film definitely deserved all it's academy awards. This movie is amazing from start to finish and Russel Crowe does an amazing job portraying an intelligent man struggling with such a debilatating mental illness. This film will definately pull on your heart strings and get you inside Nash's mind and what it might have been like to be him. You also get to see the brillance of this man who won a Nobel Peace Prize. The special features add to the movie, answering some questions that the viewer still may have.

If you end up enjoying this movie, I highly recommend checking out the book as well. It's just as engrossing. I absolutely love this movie. But be prepared to tear up during the movie! Every time I watch it I do....more info
  • Mental Illness Brought to the Screen Like Never Before
A Beautiful Mind is one of those rare movies that grace the silver screen once in a lifetime and touch our hearts and our minds in ways that other films which have attempted to replicate with similar material, have yet to achieve. For years movie goers have witnessed the world of mental illness and its horrors from an outside perspective, much like visitors to a zoo, observing life in captivity from the other side of the cage. With faithful attention to detail and a respectful compassion for a world not yet understood in its unending complexities director Ron Howard draws the audience into a world of mystery, deception and intrigue, far removing us from our comfort zones. Then, as suddenly as it all began, the rug is ripped out from under our feet, forcing us to accept the fact that a world into which we have been drawn is not always a world that others can see.

This is the basic technique of filmmaking which Ron Howard skillfully exploits throughout the film to powerfully illustrate the emotional and psychological impact of John F. Nash's schizophrenia, a mental illness that is often characterized by disturbing delusions, hallucinations and bizarre thought patterns. As one who has suffered from mental illness for nearly thirty years I personally recommend this film not merely for its intellectual and artistic delivery of the subject matter but primarily for its overall sensitivity to an issue that has remained a subject of personal controversy in many circles of conversation, even in a century revolutionized by constant scientific discoveries and the evolutionary restructuring of psychiatric treatment.

  • Bravo , Ron Howard!
A Beautiful Mind is not Crowe's best picture, perhaps, but it is one in which he shows his depth as an actor. Having reviewed his performances in 3:10 to Yuma, Master and Commander, Gladiator, Cinderella Man, A Good Year, Mystery,Alaska, Proof of Life and others, I certainly would not have thought to cast Crowe in the part of a maverick mathematician but the casting works somehow. Crowe plays Nash's role convincingly and effectively communicates the awful agony of the schizophrenic mind.

Jennifer Connelly plays Crowe's wife, Alicia Nash, in the film and makes the role her own. I felt her terror and confusion as she grappled with her husband's increasing paranoia. The scene with the baby in the bathtub took me to the edge. Connelly plays the scene with just the right balance of panic and hysteria. She richly deserved the Academy Award for her performance.

A nod should be given to Ed Harris for his mysterious role as Parcher in the film. I originally watched the film because Harris played a part but found Crowe's portrayal gripping and somewhat disturbing.

  • An Inspiring Film
I first saw this film in a packed cinema and I was encouraged by the response at the end from the audience. They remained in their seats riveted not moving for a considerable period of time and were obviously moved by what they had seen. So many Hollywood films portray schizophrenia incorrectly and those who suffer from this terrible disease as scary, violent, and often not redeeming people. Finally, audiences were able to see a film that accurately depicted this tragedy in a man of considerable intellect.

This movie was a breath of fresh air from the likes of Me, Myself and Irene with its perpetuation of the schizophrenia stereotypes.

I saw a similar reaction by an audience at the end of the film Cutting For Stone when it appeared at the Montreal Film Festival a few years ago. This was the story of a young teen developing schizophrenia who did not do as well as John Nash. What it did show was a more typical example and the two films together paint a realistic image of the disease and its impact.

  • Good but needs more explanations
Since I was so determined to see this movie because I really wanted to see it when it was released but I never got around doing it... I figured I would make it up.

First of all, amazing acting from Russel Crowe. I am impressed. He seems to have a very broad register of roles and he delivers. He plays a very complex and different character, but he does it quite convincingly. I do not know John Nash and I haven't read his biography of which this movie is based on; but if the person in the movie resembles the real John Nash, I think he would have liked to partake in our discussion about introvertion! (Originally wrote this in a forum where the question about introvertion was brought up)

Jokes aside, first of all, I should start with saying I didn't consider the movie bad, but there were some parts I really wanted more elaborated to give it a higher score in my eyes. One of those is that we never really understood much of his friends etc, and how his schizofrenia was discovered. I also wanted more background detail of his life, and in frustration I even went to Wikipedia.

Suffice to say, I felt I got to know John Nash very well but all the other characters were like sidedrags. I didn't really know their names and I didn't understand why they were there at all. Also while I realize the movie is primarily about John Nash the person, not John Nash the matematician, it focused more on his schizofrenia than his mathematical work. Now, I find schizofrenia a very interesting mental illness, and while it was one of the major driving forces to see this movie I also wanted to know more about his work! It is briefly mentioned he invented the Nash Equilibrium among other things, but we never get to know what it truly means. Once again, Wikipedia resolved the problem.

I think the movie did well as a biography though, and I even saw two copies of the Swedish king and queen! ...I think. They looked very similar regardless.

It was a touching movie, but it could have been a little deeper. I didn't even understand Charles was his "best friend" until Dr. Rose mentioned it. As previously mentioned as well, while not maybe plot holes, they were at least holes that could have been filled and fleshed out a little more. While I understand this could have caused the movie to run closer up to 3 hours, I don't see much of a problem if people can have Lord of the Rings and Star Wars marathons......more info
  • A Hollywood Masterpiece!
A Beautiful Mind, inspired by the life of John Forbes Nash Jr., was one of the most inspiring movies of this decade.
The movies starts with John Nash(Russel Crowe) as a PhD student in Princeton University, NJ, USA. John Nash, a mathematical genius who is obsessed with finding an original idea to ensure his legacy also suffers from Schizophrenia. He finally comes up with his original idea, gets married to his Graduate student of Physics at MIT, and goes through many hardships before finally receiving his NOBEL PRIZE.

Russel Crowe's performance was amazing! I have always thought that Russel was an American, due to his many American roles in HollyWood(American Gangster, Cinderella Man and many more).
Jennifer Connelly plays John Nash's wife and speaks in the American accent, but the real wife of John Nash was an international student from El Salvador, a Central American Spanish speaking country.

There were also many errors in the movie:

    - Nash's hallucinations were exclusively auditory, and not both visual and auditory as shown in the film

    - The Scene in the Club with the BLONDE is not about Nash's Equilibrium.

There were also many other error like Nash working in a Lab called Wheeler Laboratory at MIT, but such a lab didn't exist.

The Film Makers have said that the story is supposed be loosely based on J. Nash's life, and not the actual life.

The Music Score was composed by James Horner(previous works: TITANIC, TROY, GLORY). As a composer myself, I feel that it is the best score I have ever heard, yes, better than that of TITANIC.
