Customer Reviews:

  • better suited for an IT tech
i'm computer literate. not a pro, but i'm in my 30's and been using the internet since it was invented by Al Gore ;)

i cannot get this to work.

i've done all the updates and spent countless hours on M-Audio's message boards and FAQ's trying to get this to work - nothing. but please don't take my word for it - go to M-Audio > community > user forums > USB audio series and look for yourself. i would recommend to M-Audio if they have a product with this much trouble maybe you should discontinue it and start over again. you seem like a good company that made a bad product and won't let go of it.

i've had mine for over a year and have not once been fortunate enough to use it. very sad - i just want to make music with my guitar on my PC. ...more info
  • Bad Experience
I got this because someone whom I know had it. He was a sound engineer so I figured if he had it, then it must be a good product. So I went ahead and puchased it.

When I first installed it, everything worked great. I was using Pro Tools M Powered. Then a few days later, things started going haywire. It would not read the signal. I reinstalled pro-tools and the drivers about 5 times. Nothing. Went over the configurations and settings, still could not get it to work. After much frustration, I sold it on ebay. If it worked well with my system, I am sure it would be a nice product. The sound engineer friend has no probs with it. The one thing that I did not like is its only 1.1 USB. I know it is over 3 years old so maybe that why it doesnt have USB 2?

Its pretty much a flip of the coin whether this will work for you or not. I have M-Powered Pro Tools so I am going to try the Firewire 410. Even that has shaky reviews but I am crossing my fingers that it works better. ...more info
  • M-Audio has poor suport and don't know there own products
1st Bad review of all time. M-audio tech line said this would work with Mac leapard. Bought it and they said it doesn't yet when I called tech support because the drivers would not work. They then released drivers and they do not work. M-audio tech support said sorry maybe in 6 months well be able to fix it. There sales department is misinformed and their tech department is not knowledgable whatsoever about MACs. The product does work on my PC but the included software is worthless.

  • exelent
It does what I expected to do and well.it is a very good item for the home studio and an affordable price, if you buy it at amazon of course.

Hace lo que yo esperaba y es un exelente aparato para el estudio casero a un buen precio, claro si lo compra en Amazon. ...more info
  • Great product
I bought this for live shows and just want to say it works great. Almost zero latency and multipal outputs make it great for live performances and DJ's. Only gripe I have is the lock hole is right next to the power button so if you use a defcon cable it may turn the unit off when the cable is moved....more info
  • Great for DJing, okay for recording.
I find the gain has to be high on all the mics I put into this thing. Electric guitar straight in works great. Would be great as a dual out for DJing, but with microphone recording (used SM57 and MKH416)you've gotta be really loud or the gain has to be up too high and adds noise. Basically there's a tiny range where the pots seem to go WAY up. it's tough to get that at just the right point, it's kinda like all or nothing. It works for mic recording, but if you're really serious I'd go with something better. But again, for DJing or recording direct from electric guitars it's great....more info
  • Lots of problems on a Macbook Pro
First of all, search the forums on the M-Audio site and read up on the many problems people have with this box. It CAN work well - but it is very fickle.

First off, it does not use the built-in CoreAudio drivers on the Mac, so it requires its own drivers, unlike many of its competitors in this price range. The M-Audio drivers for Leopard are beta, and have been beta for a long time. That said, I was able to use the audio inputs and outputs just fine. However, keep in mind that 4x4 is deceiving. Not all inputs and outputs can be used simultaneously, but rather only in certain combinations. Check the docs before buying.

Second, it is fickle about which USB port you plug it into. M-Audio actually tells you to use only a certain port on a Macbook or Macbook Pro. I have never had this issue with other USB audio devices.

Third, when I tried to use this box for MIDI sequencing, it would generate random note ON events, an any port, with any USB cable, with any MIDI cable, with any software. I was sequencing from a Mac, to a PC. The MIDI card in the PC was an M-Audio Delta 2496. I verified the random events using MIDI OX on the PC, and MIDI Monitor on the Mac. In Midi Monitor the data was clean. But on the PC side MIDI OX showed the random events. I could not sequence with this box, period.

This happened on two units in a row. One I could understand. Two is unforgivable. I didn't try for a third. I have a cheap USB MIDI adapter from TurtleBeach that works flawlessly every time. It was only $29.

M-Audio claims that the MIDI portion of the Fast Track Pro uses the Mac's built-in MIDI drivers. My TurtleBeach adapter also uses the Mac's built-in MIDI drivers. I say this only because one might suspect that my Mac is to blame. I seriously doubt it. The audio in and out on the FTP worked perfectly for me. The MIDI on the TurtleBeach also worked perfectly. Every other USB device I own works perfectly on the Mac, including several audio devices.

The fact that I was unable to successfully feed MIDI data from one M-Audio product to another M-Audio product does not speak well for M-Audio's quality control.

This problem forced me to switch brands, and give up on the FTP. Too bad....more info
  • Simply incredible!
I have been looking for a product like this for quite some time.

It just does the job without any issues. I am running an IBM Thinkcenter with XP with SP3 and 4.0 GB of RAM and a number of hard drives. I also tried it on other systems and only ran into issues with unsupported OS's (Windows 2000) but that is a no brainer.

I am using M-Powered Pro Tools and Adobe Audition flawlessly.

Would I consider this a "Pro" item? No...

Yes the plastic case feels a little on the light side and may not stand up to the rigors of the road but I plan to keep it in my little home studio.

This is a hobbyist dream come true for getting those tracks into your software with as little fuss as possible.

If it were stolen I would replace it or move up to the M Box 2....more info
  • Don't let the naysayers scare you off..
This is a great little machine, yes there are a few caveats.. but on the whole I don't think you will find anything else in this price range with better features. I noticed quite a few negative reviews on this and other m-audio devices here on amazon, but it appears that most of them are either people who are inexperienced with digital audio equipment or people complaining about driver issues.

I have owned previous M-audio equipment and they do have a history of spotty drivers and slow fixes, however in this case I have had absolutely no problems with their drivers (running on Vista 32-bit). The sound quality is great, ASIO latency is low (~3ms), works on Linux too. I would give it 5 stars if it was 24/96 and usb 2.0...more info
  • Great bang for the buck interface
I've been using this for almost 4 years now with no issues whatsoever. The only real problem I've ever had with it was fairly late vista and 64 bit support but I was lucky enough to have been a participant for their 64 bit driver beta testing and with vista 64, it performed flawlessly.

If your computer has at least 2 gigs of ram (which it should if you're recording) and a core 2 duo cpu or something like that you shouldn't have any latency issues. I recorded with an old Pentium 4 and 2 gigs of ram and never had any latency issues.

I mainly use it for recording a pair of mic's on a guitar cab. The preamps are decent but I prefer using my ART digital MPA until I can upgrade later on.

M-Audio has full XP/Vista 32 bit and 64 bit driver support now as well as a forum where their techs and developers actually DO frequent so tech support shouldn't be a problem....more info
  • Just Plug and Play - Works Great!!
I've had this for over a week and have been recording many hours every night. No problems so far.

I am using Garageband on a MacBook Pro laptop and the addition of this device was seamless.

I am not new to home recording as I have a Dell Pc with an Edirol USB device and Sonar Producer edition but I moved and these are still at my old home.

One of the main reasons I bought this was for the Mac/Pc compatibility and the phantom power - a requirement for my Condenser mic.

It feels well constructed and the preamps work well - the pad switches being a nice addition.

The ability for recording two tracks at a time is great too as sometimes I like to lay down a "live" demo first and its great to have guitar on one track and vocals on another.

    The Cons?
Well, this is me being picky but I dont like the white push switches, they just feel and little cheap and plastic.
Also the gains could have been better, you do need to have them almost all the way up.

Other than that, I cant fault it. But there are many more hours of recording ahead of me so if anything pops up, I'll be back!...more info
  • It works nicely if you have the time to make it work
The M-Audio FTP does work nicely. Like many others (whose questions I see in various forums), I had difficulty getting it to work and I had difficulty finding out why. This could save you hours:
If you have Windows XP, there is a column in the m-audio.com knowledge base (go to support then knowledge base), and after entering USB audio devices/M-Audio Fast Track Pro and Windows XP, look for "not connected". This will walk you through what will most probably happen to you when you're trying to connect the thing.
Another thing that was not clear to me when installing is that this device replaces your sound card. So go to your device manager and turn your old sound card off.
The device is good and I'm using if for fairly high level recording now. Having two inputs that double as 1/4 inch and mic inputs is very nice to have.
So, aside from it being troublesome to get going, I recommend it.

  • Avoid if you're running Vista...
I don't write a lot of reviews, but this thing is such a pain and M-Audio are so obtuse that I had to write one. I knew that the Vista drivers were in beta when I bought it, but I figured that would not last long. Well, the last update was in June of 07 and they will not give a clue as to when the official driver will be out. The beta drivers suck and I have had nothing but glitches and problems. The hardware is all plastic and OK for the price, but without proper software it's almost useless. I just ordered a Firebox, hooked it up in 5 min and it works 10x better. If you're running XP this might not be an issue, but the truth is the $100 more for a firebox is worth every penny. M-audio and Mackie are both dropping the ball on software support lately and it's going to cost them in the long run. The forums are full of people telling them that, but not a lot of results yet. We all hate Vista, but that's life. Get your drivers up to date....more info
  • Awesome
This thing is awesome. Awesome. Well, as far as audio interfaces go, this is the best I've owned if only for the portability. Of course, the composite inputs on the front have a great preamp and deliver a clear signal to my computer with almost no latency. All in all it's a great product for a person on a budget....more info
  • shoulda came with a full version of software...
so again its all gravy and what not but i THOUGHT i READ that it WAS going to COME with a stupid music software that would enable me to play and record. but noooo you got to do it piece by piece. first this, then you buy some 300$ software. laaame-o. stupid demo's. cant do nufin! but the product itself is cool. just needs to come with some full freakin software! who wants demos?...more info
