Product Description

The Actiontec Internet Phone Wizard combines the ease and convenience of your normal phone and the zero cost of Internet calls. Simply connect your computer to the Internet, pick up your phone and begin dialing as you've always done without any worry of a huge phone bill. The Internet Phone Wizard with Skype makes it easy and fun to call any Skype user in the world for free, and everyone else at low SkypeOut rates. The Internet Phone Wizard is the world's first device to truly integrate Internet calls with normal calls. Whether you want to make or receive calls, use the same phone for your Internet as well as normal calls. When you receive a phone call, the Internet Phone Wizard automatically detects whether it's an incoming Internet or normal phone call and switches to that phone mode automatically. The Internet Phone Wizard comes with a unique, patented call-waiting feature. When you 're already on a call, you can pick up incoming calls by just pressing a couple of keys. So whether you would like to use your phone for Internet or normal calls, switching between the two is as easy as pressing a few keys on your phone. With Internet Phone Wizard, you no longer have to wait for family members to get off the phone when you want to make a call. Use the capabilities of the Internet to create another phone line for free. The Internet Phone Wizard with Skype does this without any configuration. Customer Reviews:

  • Great Product, a few bugs
This thing works great! The only issues is that occasionally the driver crashes and i have to disconnect and reconnect so that Win XP reloads the USB driver....more info
  • Loved this item
Will recommend for anyone wanting to set up a Skype account. Item makes it so easy to use. The affordable of Skype to now add to your existing home network phone lines to simply use your regular phone ('s). Takes a little to get use to, but before long, you will be up and running like a pro. I will suggest to get a small computer with CAT 5 connection to hook directly into your router, and use this computer just for Skype phone service. Found a good cheap used Dell Optiplex on and online action that works great!!! It is used for a server only for Skype. I say these items will pay for themselves within 4 months of another VioP service I had....more info
  • very good, feature rich product
    Awesome features of the IPW:

    - allows you to make use of your old technology (POTS phone)
    - cheap!
    - incredibly easy to set up and install
    - includes well-written, unobtrusive interface software

The only bad thing I've found:

    - quality seems to be slightly lower than with my Logitech USB headset

The best I can figure is that the "anti-echo" technology that's included in this hardware is getting in the way. Many people on the other end of the conversation have complained that we both can't talk at the same time, which was less of a problem with the headset....more info
  • Works well
The VoSKY Internet phone wizard for Skype works well. I did have problems with settings and sound that others have mentioned, but with much patience I eventually found that the issue was in my sound setup in the Windows Control panel sounds/audio settings area, and not really a VoSky defect. I would have appreciated better installation instructions with more guidance on dealing with the Windows Control Panel settings, and better tech support to talk me thru the issues lacking in the instructions would have been nice. I'm still not sure what I fixed with all the fiddling I did in the Windows Control Panel. The four stars are because the product works exactly as advertised with the Skype software available in June 08; that's really great, because I haven't been able to find products from any other manufacturer that allow Skype services to connect to a local wired phone network such as house wiring. The fifth star is missing because of the limitations of the manual and the appearant difficulty in reaching tech support, which I never got past....more info
  • Poor driver software and awful sound quality
Despite several hours of trying, I could not get the driver software to work on the first PC that I tried to use the IPW on. I eventually gave up and tried on a second PC. This time I had more luck. The software worked, but I was very disappointed with the quality of the sound. When I used the phone, the other party could barely hear me. I could hear them reasonably well, but I would sound distant and cut in and out. The quality was not good enough to hold a conversation. Skype doesn't always provide perfect call quality, but I was able to get great sound quality on the same call with my USB headset so I was convinced that it wasn't Skype causing the problem. This was a consistant problem on all calls over a one week trial. I tried increasing the microphone level in the Skype options, but it made no difference. Overall, I found the quality of the software and the IPW its self unacceptable and returned the product....more info
  • Doesn't work on Vista
This product doesn't work on Vista and after contacting Actiontec regarding this issue not only they ignored my messages, but when I browsed over the net for help, there was only a couple of responses from them one year old at least. Although this product is excellent running on XP, the lack of support and incapacity to keep up with current operating systems is at least unacceptable. If you plan to ever update to Vista, don't spend your money on it....more info
  • Very poor quality and no support
I bought the first device and while I could hear fine the person on the other end heard either a really bad echo or words were being dropped. I sent it back and tried another one with the exact same results. Contacted their tech support online and never received an answer. I tried both devices on three different computers with the same result. I can use a headset connected to the sound card with excellent phone quality so it is not the network connection. I would not recommend this device....more info
  • Sound quality could be better
It works exactly as it is supposed to, but the sound quality is not that great. Initially, the sound quality for the people I was calling was awful (although I heard them fine, my voice was garbled to them). That was fixed by connecting the Internet Phone Wizard directly to my computers USB 2.0 port (as opposed to a hub or to a USB extension cable). However, even once I did that, I still hear a lot more interference than I do if I use a headset on my PC. The question is whether this product would work better on a newer, faster, PC. I doubt it, but you never know. I have a 4 or 5 yr old DELL Dimension 4400 running at 1.6GHz with 750 MBRam (WinXP).

The sound quality is poor enough, that for calls under 10 minutes I find myself opting to use the PC headset for better quality. If I am going to be on the phone long distance for 30 minutes, I use this box so that I have the freedom to roam around the house on my cordless phone, even if the voice quality does suffer....more info
  • Works great if you know how to dial from your phone properly
Note: If the SkypeOut contact does not have a speed dial
number, dial the number using the following
    format: 00+Country Code+Area Code+Local
    Phone Number.

I have seen some people saying that they could only dial from the computer. That is not true, but you have to know how to do it from your phone.

When you dial from Skype software on your computer, it already knows your country. So if you are in the US, and you want to call 1-800-555-1212, then you just put that into the Skype window and it calls the number.

BUT, when you are on the actual telephone, you need to first dial ## (only if you have the regular phone line connected), then once you are on Vosky/Skype, you have to dial 00, and then the number.

So, if you are in the US, and you want to call 1-800-555-1212 from your regular telephone using Vosky, you would dial ##-00-1-800-555-1212.

I hope that clears up some of the confusion. Also, Skype for some reason does not offer speed dial from within the Skype software (as of this writing), and I have seen no plan to re-enstate that feature. So the only way you can dial from your telephone with Vosky IPW is to enter the actual number as shown above, or program it into your telephone's speed dial.

  • Not up to replacing land line
I used the phone wizard with skype and my cordless home phone for several phone calls. A couple of calls went very well. Conversations were generally clear. But a couple of calls had interruptions in service and on two occasions part way thorugh a call I could hear the party I called but they could not hear me. I tried with and without a connection to my home phone line. The phone wizard worked most of the time but I wanted something to work every time so I returned it. I had previously used skype on the same computer with another product and did not have these problems....more info
