Product Description

Described as 'folk-hop' with Comparisons to Portishead, the Album features a Bonus Track 'hey Pretty (Drive by 2001 Mix).

Give Poe credit for overcoming obstacles and delivering a second album as ambitious and loaded as Haunted. Extending over 15 wildly diverse tracks linked together by ambient interludes and spooky tape splices of old cassette recordings featuring the singer's late father, documentary filmmaker Tad Danielewski, the album shows the songstress moving effortlessly through ethereal folk-hop ("Haunted"), Shania Twain-style country rock ("Walk the Walk"), and flamenco-infused balladry ("Spanish Doll"). The only constant through the turbulence--emotional and otherwise--remains her desperately romantic voice and its desire to bid her father a proper farewell at every turn. --Jaan Uhelszki

Customer Reviews:

  • Great Album from start to finish!
Usually I only like a few songs on a CD but this starts great and only gets better. I don't think I could pick just one song as my favorite. Poe really raised the bar for herself with this album....more info
  • A Fascinating Journey
I discovered this wonderful singer through a song called "Walk the Walk", which I fell in love with the second I heard it. Soon after, I got hold of the entire CD and realized that this is not just a great rock album, it's a story, a journey. Poe (Annie Decatur Danielewski) delivers each song in such a personal way that you can't help but get swept away by the enchanting music and the intriguing lyrics. Some songs, like "Wild", "Control" and "Walk the Walk" leave you feeling empowered and are very cathartic. Others, like "Haunted" and "5 and a Half Minute Hallway", have a dream-like feel to them. Then there are those songs that are simply a joy to listen to without having a specific agenda, such as "Spanish Dall", which is a beautiful combination of Spanish guitar and heart-wrenching lyrics, or "Lemon Meringue", which lives up to its promise that "this will be a good song" (as the funny guy in the intro says). At the forefront of it all is Poe's voice, mature and compelling, which carries each song with intelligence and grace. And as strange as this may sound, the songs are not the only thing that makes this album great. It also contains bits of dialogue between father and daughter, some of which appear at the beginning or end of songs, some are independent tracks, and all these bits add depth and mystery to the story told by this album.

So if you appreciate innovative rock and are looking for more than your average pop-rock sound that dominates today's charts, this could be the album for you....more info
  • How would it feel to loose your father twice?
Poe has, once when he died and once again when she found a box of tapes with his voice on them.

Haunted is, at it's core, a concept album. The artist, years after her father's death, found a box of tape recordings he had left behind. As she sorts through her feelings for her father, she invites the listener along for the journey. The album sucks you in with excellent production, thought provoking lyrics, and actual sample's of the artist's deceased father. What keeps you listening to it over and over is how well you can relate to the message of loss, mourning, and finally acceptance of the loss of her father. ...more info
  • ok album
I'm new to Poe. When I heard the first track, I knew I had to get this album. I love morbid. That's what this whole album is. The reason it gets 3 stars is, because the voices in the background are annoying. It's a good album nonetheless. My favorite tracks are

    Exploration B
    Haunted
    Control
    Terrible Thought
    Beat of my own drum
    Wild
    Spanish Doll...more info
  • Just a quick note....
I've been wanting to read House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski since I first heard Poe's music, about 6 months ago. Unfortunately my local bookstores (even the huge ones!) are always sold out...

I will always treasure the title track from this CD. I've listened to others, Hey Pretty is a great song. I'm actually listening to it right now!....but Haunted (track) is the most emotional song I've ever heard. It means more to me than anything else I've ever sung to through my tears... I think what makes it so beautiful is that you can really hear Annie's (Poe's) sadness in her voice. It's not a commercialized song about a breakup or a lost friend, written by four guys in a studio and sung by an industry produced voice...it's real. It's what SHE feels. And that's what I love about it....more info
  • I grew up a little and so did P*E
When "Haunted" came out, I was there to buy it. It had been years since we heard anything from POE and usually a sophomore effort sucks. I was wrong. The music on "Haunted," the lyrics, wow, grown up, and that was great 'cause all of us Psychos grew up too. This is truly an album. Everytime I put it in, I listen to the whole thing. This was the second album i put on my iPod, the first being "Hello."
POE is wonderful, just give her a chance. She will mezmerize you and before you know it, you will be an Angry Psycho too....more info
  • Any true music lover must have this album!
I first heard the songs on this album after downloading this album online. I wanted any Poe song I could get my hands on after falling in love with the first album. I was not disappointed. I immediately bought this album and it never left my stereo or my winamp player for the next 6 months. Think Dark Side of the Moon, when the cd finishes playing you're left wondering where the time went. Add to that the wonderful book House of Leaves for which this album basically serves as a soundtrack (again, similar to Dark Side of the Moon and The Wizard of Oz). Poe has managed to tie in with her brother's novel while giving a loving goodbye to her father. This album never feels contrived or manufactured. Every lyric is an honest window into her soul that so few artists construct for their fans these days. These aren't words written by some 40 year old man who wouldn't know passionate artistic expression if it punched him in the face. There are multiple layers that can only be fully appreciated after repeated listenings from beginning to end. The fact that there is more to this album than just face value is a rarity in this sex sells industry . Most of Poe's work has been overlooked by the general public. Part of this stems from the fact that she is actually asking the listener to think for themselves. A prime example of this is the song Not a Virgin. After your first listen, you might think of it as just another sexual exploitation song (Promiscuous by Nelly Furtado comes to mind). Further *active* listens will clue you in on the true nature of this song, childhood rebellion. Through this song namely, the album presents the actual relationship she had with her father from more than one dimension. Most people have a love/hate relationship with their parents, especially in their teenage years, and Poe is able to recreate that through music.

The brief summary I've written here is just a taste of what this album has to offer. Every time I have played this around people who've never heard her before, they immediately fall in love (which is how I first heard Poe as well and god bless that friend). These are people I might normally listen to Pantera's Cowboys From Hell with or even Pink. The reason I say this is that I believe many people immediately disregard Poe because because she is a female singer who is not afraid to try different sounds and they don't all happen to be 5 minute guitar solos. If you appreciate music as an art form that requires honesty and a bit of soul bearing, you will love this album no matter what your preffered music genre is....more info
  • A work of art.
I am deeply in love with this album, Poe creates a expermintal, trip pop materpiece once again.
Her voice is just beautiful, and her lyrics are poetry the script of her father's ghost haunting her...the stir of the emotions, both in songs and script.
It's brilliant, complete genuis; from tracks that never seems to fail to make me cry like "If you were here" anthems like "Control" and the seductive "Hey Pretty."...more info
  • AMAZINGLY HAUNTING!
This is by far one of the best albums I have ever purchased! In todays "prepackaged pop world" it is refeshing to remeber and hear that true artist do still exsist. When an artist can dig deep into areas of their life and share with you "gut wrentching" personal experiences you need to take notice! This is an album of letting go of what has haunted you in the past and claiming your future!...more info
  • Amazing Talent, Fabulous Music, Something for Every Mood!
    This chick as "got it."
Doing most if not all the album entirely by herself, Poe brings about both the complexity of a huge production as well as a (all too often unused) simplicity of songs that are gut-wrenching in their beauty--all in one tidy package. The album of driving industrial beats (like on Haunted and Control) and lovely guitar refrains (Spanish Doll) flows wonderfully from beginning to end, with wisps of an ethereal story being woven in, no doubt influences from the novel "House of Leaves" by Poe's brother, Mark Danielewki.
You will leave this album feeling like there's something more to music than overused pop anthems and emo ballads--Poe raises the bar for everyone else. This is truly a masterful work from an extremely talented and seemingly genuine woman.
Though she has only released 2 full albums to date, Poe is in my list of top musical artists of all time....more info
  • Poe mixes things up a little..
As it seems to be her style...Poe kept us waiting a little while after the release of her first disc "Hello". The wait was well worth it. For those expecting a repeat of her debut, you're out of luck as this album comes across darker with its mood and emotional in a therapeutic sense. Her angst and frustration from the former have been tuned towards the direction of her father who passed away. The feeling you come away with is that she had unresolved issues that she is able to vent here in a beautiful and "haunting" manner.
I love how she changed her style up and continued to keep me very interested....more info
  • So much better than the first ablum, cant wait to hear more!
Now I loved "Hello" and as all other fans waited patiently for this cd. I bought it the day it came out and was completely blown away.
I will never understand how she remains a "hidden treasure" and doesnt have the huge success she desreves.
This cd is all over the place but in a good way. You have flamenco, folk, rock and dance all in one place. With lyrics that are painful, piercing, honest and lovely. Her voice is amazing and I never tire listening to it.
I love this cd. Ive had it for years and keep pulling it out and get shocked everytime I listen.
If you like Amanda Ghost, Goldfrapp, or Air you should definately give this a go....more info
  • Modern Concept Album
Along with her brother Mark Z. Danielewski, his novel (house of leaves) along with Poe's Haunted shows the way two siblings deal psychologicaly with the death of their father.

One day Poe found a box of old tapes from her father (a documentarian) years after his death. Listening to these tapes her father was able to speak to her from beyond the grave, and that's the undercurrent running through Haunted. Clips from those tapes are sampled throughout the album.

As a sophmore release it was a very brave release, opting for creative expression over commercial appeal. That DIY attitude and extreme personal investment is layered in this album you can't help but be moved to emotions I still can't describe by the end of "Amazing", but then reduced to tears half way through "If you where here"...I still cry after 6 years I've been listening to this album.

If you like Artists that aren't afraid to express their soul, and who constantly shows the utmost love and respect for her fans, Poe will NEVER dissapoint....more info
  • It's amazing to me...
Haunted is one of the most intriguing and fulfilling albums I've encountered to date. The depth, the layering, the richness of sound, pair with fantastic lyrics that while being sexy, powerful and provoking when taken in the artist's context alone, also tie in beautifully with the book House of Leaves.

I was introduced to the album and book by a friend, so I had the chance to experience both works together, which was a great ride. (Yes, I was playing the CD over and over; it's a big book.) But Poe's Haunted has never strayed from my CD line-up since. I love it most in the summer. I guess there's just something about it's deep colour and intensity that make me think of hot days and nights waiting for autumn breezes to come.

I love that she was compelled to stretch in various directions with her music and voice. Shades reflect the bewitching charmer, powerful rock chic, sad dreamer, little girl, and force of nature. And the whole while there's an under-current that gives you the feeling something's about to come out of your own wall to get you.

Anyway, I love it. I need more Poe. ...more info
  • I'M "AMAZED".....
Sometimes I have to hide this CD from myself for months, because it will simply take over any and all players as well as my head for excruciating long periods of time. Ahh, sweet, sweet Haunted torture...I found myself immensely intrigued with the running thread of her father and her family's past.

Truly one of my top 10 favorite albums of all time--and that's really saying something because I am an all-genre kind of gal. The only thing I'd heard previously from Poe was 'Angry Johnny' because it smothered the airwaves back when I actually listened to radio. Then I found this, purely by accident...although I have a feeling there's nothing accidental about any of Poe's work.

The CD was released in conjuction with her brother's book The House of Leaves, and the two complement each other subtly yet effectively. That book is quite a commitment, so take it slowly.

    Brilliant.

  • One of the best ever.
I love this album, a lot. It took me about a year to listen to it after I bought, but now I listen to it at least twice a week. I have over 200 cds in my collection and you could take all of them away and leave me this one and I would be just fine I think....more info
  • Now I'm Haunted...
This album was a spectacular follow-up to Poe's "Hello" album. Every song on it has a wonderful depth to it, both in the musical arrangement and lyrics. You can tell this CD was a labor of love, it will forever rank in one of my top five all time favorite CDs. If you have a soul, something on this CD will appeal to you. Poe's articulation of such a range of human emotions makes this CD a can't miss....more info
  • Perfection
    "Ever read any Poe?"
"No, but I LOVED her last album."

With this dialogue exchange from Panic Room, I was first introduced to the singer Poe. When looking for her online a few days ago, I saw THIS and assumed it was the album in question. So, I bought it after hearing some sample tracks.
After listening to this album, I can say this: had it been her debut, it would have gotten more praise than it already has, and it could have made her a superstar. That's how good it is. But no, it peaked at #115 in a year of N'Sync, Britney Spears and The Backstreet Boys. This could have launched a musical revolution with it's eerie concept, it's swirling music, and the "beyondthegrave" recordings of her father, whose death dominates the album. Buy it. I did and I'm VERY happy with my purchase.

EDIT: It has, since the day I wrote this, become my favorite album. Best Songs: Haunted, Hey Pretty, Control, Terrible Thought, Not A Virgin, Walk The Walk....more info

  • This CD is so amazing...

  • My Favorite Album
Poe's aptly titled album is haunting and beautiful. There are so many aspects of human emotion explored there's a song for every mood. I just can't wait to see what she does next. Thanks Annie! ...more info
  • This generation's "Dark Side of The Moon"
In my humble opinion, the only reason that this album is not as successful or cherished culturally as Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" is that it was made by a woman. (That and the fact that George Bush was President when this album came out--but I won't go into that here :-) The problem is that Poe's sexuality is so powerful that it threatening....threatening because her sexuality is born out of an almost blinding intelligence. When the little girl's voice on the album pleads..."don't be scared" I get chills. This is when the voice of the album goes beyond the personal concerns of Poe and seems to be pleading with the world to be brave enough to conceive of and really listen to a feminine voice that is complete. Though I have certainly heard glimmers of such a voice in certain works of literature written by women...Poe's "Haunted" in my humble opinion, is the first place the world has ever encountered such a voice expressing itself through music. "Haunted" is a timeless classic, and it is my belief (and hope), that it will find an important place in the history of music and art. It's a masterpiece plain and simple....more info
  • LOVE IT!!!
I first heard Poe back in 2000 and, although I have a pretty eclectic taste in music, initially had some reservations. But give it a chance....
So, you listen to it once and you hear all the creepy dialogue, etc. between songs and you may think "This is weird and scaring me a bit" and give it up. But....I urge you to listen to each of the tracks again like I did. I was not disappointed. This music will truly floor you with it's amazing lyrics. Listen to Amazed, Haunted, and Fly Away (among others!) and you will not be sorry you have added this album to your collection.

Also, Poe's other works are just as good and have the same beautiful and meaningful lyrics as you would expect....more info
  • Beginning to End- This CD is a must-listen...
There are very few albums I like from beginning to end (NIN Pretty Hate Machine, Tori Amos Little Earthquakes, Sarah McLachlan Fumbling Towards Ecstacy), but Poe's Haunted is an absolutely amazing album.

The variety of influences in evidence makes this a great choice for anyone who enjoys the "art" of making music. Poe brings great lyrics and a sexy, lower-register voice that she wields with passion and confidence.

Too many great songs to name a favorite, but the album closer is a touching and wonderful song that will speak to anyone who has lost someone close to them.

  • The greatest album since THE WALL...(even better!)
When THE WALL came out a friend came and grabbed me and said "I'm going to do you a favor!" and he put Pink Floyd's masterpiece on and we listened in awe. Let me do you a favor and tell you to BUY this album, dim the lights, have a wine and listen to start to finish.

This album is simply perfect. POE's HAUNTED takes you on a journey with an unbelievably crisp combination of delicate, raw, edgy, sexy, personal and perpetually fresh lyrics, music and sounds.

The production on this album is simply astonishing. Poe's voice is absolutely perfect to pull off this album and you can hear every word she sings.

Listen to it from start to finish as she takes you on a intense experience and each song is a different stage. If it were a movie, you could compare it to Shawshank Redemption (yes I know that was random)and POE is both Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins as she takes you through the pain and triumphs of life in way the transcends description.

  • A superb blend of powerful performances and modern production.
Poe's 1996 debut "Hello" was an intriguing mix of alternative, electronica, and production technique that scratched the surface of what she was capable of as a performer (something her live shows managed to capture far better). 2000's "Haunted" takes the ideas and techniques of Poe's debut and manages to fuse the directness and energy of her live shows to it, proving to be a much more satisfying listen. It also proves to be perhaps the best produced album of its time, effortlessly blending instruments, sounds and prerecorded triggers as it effortlessly slides from one sound to another.

What stays consistent pretty much throughout the album is an underlying current of darkness and mood but without having a sense of bleakness (bouncey "Lemon Meringue") and a seemingly endless pool of sensuality ("Wild"). Jumping rhythms and rattling beats ("Control"), Flamenco sounds ("Spanish Doll"), noisy guitars ("Terrible Thought") and acoustic ballads ("5&1/2 Minute Hallway") all blend with recordings of Poe's then-recently-deceased father's voice to form a stew that keeps moving, keeps grabbing your attention, and proves endlessly intriguing. What's quite amazing is that the album wasn't a bigger success (although it was likely Atlantic Records that gets that credit).

"Haunted" really is a miracle of production, managing endless waves of sound without sucking the life from the performances. For anyone interested in unique music, this one is worth investigation, highly recommended....more info
  • Better than most junk on the mainstream
I first heard of Poe from a game called Apocalypse. I purchased the album to find that has Poe great vocals and talent. It is so refreshing to have a female singer not use sex to sell an ablum. If you actually listen to that stuff without the sex and their body movements it's all junk. Most other artist like spears, shakira, etc. make it hard for a female artist to be taken seriously musically.Espically someone like Jessica Simpson with her redicously stupid "reality" show how could any one take female artist seriously. With artists like Poe out there she proves females could make great music that truly comes from the heart. Not to find ways of just putting junk on an C.D. and call it music. Even though Poe isn't in the main stream like others but to get as much attetion as Poe does says alot about the artist. My favorite tracks are Haunted,Control,Terrible Thought,5&1/2 minute hallway, wild, could have gone mad and if you were here....more info
  • Poe's unique view still rocks!
I've been a POE fan since I first heard her in the mid 90's so when I saw this album released, I snapped it up quickly. As with all my favorite albums, this one took a few listens to grow on me. It's a concept album that is a tribute to her deceased father. The musical styles range across a broad spectrum, but are all tied together very neatly, with one exception. I don't know what demons POE was excising with her song "Not A Virgin" because there is no context for this piece. It is the only song on the album which I don't care for. The rest of the songs paint a complex picture of her relationship with her father and coming to grips with his passing. A heavy topic which she handles very adroitly. Concept albums are very rare these days but this one is well worth a listen, even if you're not a POE fan, yet....more info
  • As the title discribes...
I have long been a fan of powerful, moving music. Delerium's Karma, Morissette's Jagged Little Pill, you name it.

This album, however, is like a gem among semi-precious stones. From the opening coversation with her mother's answering machine, to the final farewell to her father this album kept me enthralled. This is less of an album than a story, confessional, and fantasy, all unfolding at the same time.

Alright enough with the flowerly words, lets get down to business shall we? I'll just hit the highlights.

Haunted - Has done just that to me. The beat and music set the tone for the rest of songs, opening with a sweet foreshadowing of what is to come.

Terrible Thought - A wonderful, impish feeling song that really makes you wonder if she really wants to get rid of the thought or not.

Wild - While she should have cut this song short, it still has powerful emotion and a hell of a beat.

Spanish Doll - Operatic, sad, and wonderful.

If you were Here - A closing song worth of the story and music that the album shares....more info
  • An amazing work of art
I discovered this album at a party. My friend burned the CD for me, and I was blown away -- I listened to the CD constantly for months. I love the songs, the music, the lyrics...

Poe is possessed on this album by an amazing talent, that shines in songs like "Haunted" or "I'm Not a Virgin Anymore". She has a way with smart, cutting lyrics that perfectly express what the music is saying. And the music absolutely rocks; I can't listen to this album without singing all the way through....more info
  • A fresh sound in an endless tidal wave of commercialism.
Poe is amazing. She will capture you with her lyrical stylings and won't let you go until you absolutely have to come up for air. And then, once you've caught your breath, you'll dive right back in again.

I bought this CD after seeing it advertised in Mark Z. Danielewski's "House of Leaves," and I will say that it was quite possibly the best money that I've ever spent. Haunted has such a broad range of songs for any mood, ranging from whimsical (Lemon Merigue) to angry (Control) to a sound that you can't even hope to put any single emotion to (Haunted). It's something new and different, and definitely welcome in the recent wake of music in which every song and every band sounds exactly the same. If you're looking for something original, something hard-hitting, something captivating...pick up Haunted. You won't regret it. ...more info
  • House of Leaves

  • It starts with a phone call...
Poe's second album starts with a phone call. The mood is set. Dim the lights, close the curtains, and be prepared for an intimate journey. Far more personal than her premier album ("hello" 1995 Atlantic Records) Poe strikes deep at the familiar. Sharing with her audience the complex emotional gestalt brought on by the resurfacing of audio tapes containing her father's voice (the late Tad Danielewski).

This exploration does not conclude with Poe; it extends to a complementary piece of literature - House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. Beyond Poe's strong, sexy voice; a cerebral Mark Z. possesses readers with a maddening intellectual multi-layered novel that adds a whole new dimension to Haunted. Listeners will appreciate the subtle references voiced by an admittedly spooky little girl, as well as grainy samples of audio cassettes from her father which are masterfully placed throughout various tracks.

Poe generously provides a multitude of music styles proving beyond any shadow of a doubt how truly boundless her explosive creativity and talents stretch. Each track deserves to be studied for its content and the messages they deliver. Be sure to pay close attention to the lyrics, which are just as poetic as they are entertaining. Filled with depth and sincerity, this album is a must for anyone who desires something more than just good songs. Perhaps after listening to this album for the first time, you too will be haunted by emotions you thought had expired.

Just take Poe's advice: "Don't be afraid..."
