Customer Reviews: - Great Comfort and Fast Shipping
I ordered these Earbuds after a recommendation from a good friend of mine and reading some reviews on the comfort level these provide. I cannot use the IPOD buds due to the sever pain after wearing them for about 2 or 3 minutes.
These are by far the most comfortable pair of buds I have ever owned. The blockage of external notice is probably more like 95% to me (states on their website 98%).
I cannot comment on the sound quality as I am no professional music person. For my listening at work and home while working they are perfect!
Free Shipping from Amazon got to me in two days (ordered Friday and received them on Monday).
Great Price for a great pair of headphones. ...more info - Excellent isolation and high fidelity
Superb product! Blocks all outside noise (e.g., on a plane you feel totally isolated from the environment) and sound quality is awesome (good power output -no more is required given the isolation- and good performance throughout the entire frequency spectrum). Variety of earplugs to fit well all ears. Highly recommended given also the very decent price....more info - Always look forward to using my ER6i's
I have had the same pair for 3-4 years and use them for music 4-5 days a week for running and biking, etc. They have amazing sound, much better than the lower-end Shures or any other in-ear headphones I have used. The bass is there, it is just not booming. The sound is crystal clear and higher bitrates are prefered. The have a low impedence meaning they can have a higher volume with low-powered devices like mp3 players. I can wear them for hours and they don't hurt my ears at all.
I don't understand some of the comments with durability. The only thing I can figure is that people are pulling them out of their ears by the wires. That would mess them up real quick.
I change the filters once or twice a year (order some extras) and use the regular white 3-flange inserts. I find it best to use some saliva on them before inserting them. This helps them seat good in the ears.
If I lost them, I would buy another pair without hesitation....more info - High end sound
Sounds great but hard to get used to deep insertion. Don't plan on hearing too much outside noise in fact pretty much cuts out the whole world. Would be good if you did running or activities that other buds would fall out. Cord does get tangled in the pocket but no big deal. If you want to up grade your sound on your Ipod this is the way to go. ...more info - good sound; poor construction
I purchased these headphones to use with my iPod. I am often in noisy environments and found that the standard iPod earbuds let through too much ambient noise, with the result that I had to turn up the volume on the iPod to what I felt were potentially damaging levels to listen. The Etymotics, properly inserted, both sound great and substantially lessen ambient noise. I found them comfortable to wear for extended periods as well.
However, the construction of the Etymotics is poor. Within a year of purchase, the wires attached to the 3.5mm plug broke so that one channel of audio was lost. Etymotic replaced this set under warranty, but now the same thing has happened to the replacements. I see other reviewers have had the same problem. In both sets, the shirt clip broke as well. As I said, I put this down to poor construction: the attachment between the wire and the plug is not sealed and it's easy to see how it can work loose and break. I play well with my toys, so I don't think it's a case of customer abuse....more info - Excellent sound isolation but beware overusage
I have been using my Etymotic earphones for 1.5 years now and overall I'm extremely happy with them. When listening to music with them on, the external sound isolation is excellent. Everything external is extremely muffled. I also do a lot of transcription of talk with these earphones in and I find that these earphones pick up background low-level voices better than regular headphones or listening through the computer's speakers.
The only thing I have to complain about is that because I use them for 5-6 hours per day when I am transcribing, my ear canals have become very irritated and red. I've read in other forums that this can be taken car of by using a little ear cream or oil, but in order to preserve the sound seal, a bare ear is best. As such, I gave only 4 out of 5 stars. But if you are not using these phones for several hours a day every day, you shouldn't have any problems. They are excellent!...more info - Best for price
This is my 2nd pair in 2 years. I had to return the first pair after 1 year because sound in one side died. No problem, it was still under warranty and they replaced it. Almost a year later, the same thing happened. So I researched and read reviews of many other earphones on Amazon, MacWorld, et al and finally came to the conclusion that the best I could get for the money were the same ones. So I'm hoping for better luck this time. That said, they are great when I am walking, running, and on my lawn tractor. They don't fall out like the ones that came with my iPod and they filter out most external noise. The sound is very good. My only advice, keep your receipt....more info - Disappointing.
I purchased these based on the reviews here as well as iLounge. I listen to a wide variety of music and wanted a neutral sound that had a fair balance of highs and lows. Classical music, especially the pianos sound great, Rock is good although the lows are often drowned out by the highs, R&B and Hip-Hop are very disappointing. The low end is practically nonexistent, often even sounds tinny. I used all the included earpieces to ensure I found the best fit, I even purchased a third party earpiece thinking the lack of lows was due to an improper fit. The lows are still barely noticeable.
I purchased another set of earphones due to my disappointment and used the third party earpiece and viola! Bass and clean lows.
The only reason I'm giving this product 3 stars rather than anything lower is because the mid and highs are great enough to make you notice things you were missing in your music. The separation and isolation are awesome, but I can't get over the fact that even in the description it states the ER6is have better bass than ER6s yet they still come in weak on the low end. ...more info - Overrated - tinny sound quality
These headphones are good at blocking ambient noise and I use them in a busy office. However, the sound quality is lacking. There is a definite lack of bass and the mids and highs have a very tinny sound. Although the mids and highs are crisper, there is a lack of "warmth" in the sound. This may be due to a lack of bass. I'd like to note that I use these headphones with an Ipod. ...more info - Great sound, comfy fit
I had been wanting to try some nice in-ear headphones for quite a while, but never wanted to cough up the money. But I did a bunch of research and settled on some ER6i to use with my new iPod....the included headphones are HORRIBLE. To my delight, these headphones were far better than I had even hoped.
I used to fly quite a bit, and like to sleep on planes while listening to music. My Bose QC2s didnt allow me to lean against the window, but these do the trick. For the first few flights I took both the QC2s and the ER6i, and even did a ear-to-ear comparison--they sounded virtually identical. The isolation offered by the ER6is virtually match the cancellation the QC2s provide. However, the ER6is offer a lot more comfort and versatility.
I can run with my ipod or sleep against a pillow with these headphones, and they were less than half the price of my QC2s. Definitely a great headphone....more info - Great sounding
These sound great and really isolate your listening from outside sounds. I use them mowing and weed whacking. They are a must in the car to minimize road and wind noise. The detail is just the way I like it. Great detail with no booming bass. If you like buzzy booming bass, stay away. If you want to hear the music, these are for you....more info - Good Stuff!
I purchased two sets of these earphones, one for myself and one for my wife. We have been traveling extensively and we use them on the airplane. We love them. They are quite, comfortable and easy to store. Most importantly, they have great sound!...more info - Etymotic Research ER6i Isolator
This is my second pair of this exact make. Have used the first pair for over a year with no problems. Very good sound reproduction and if you get them seated properly the bass is very good. Great passive noise reduction which allows you to play the volume at a lower level saving some wear and tear on your eardrums. Very comfortable. I do like the foam inserts better than the silicone. Either way they get kind of gross and need cleaning (wax you know) fairly often. Best earbuds I have used....more info - Not worth the money
These earphones are not worth the money. There is absoultly no base tone at all. I tried inserting them according to their instructions, and there was still no base tone. I tried using them with different mp3 players and the sound was all the same. I returned them for credit and bought the Bose in ear phones. They sound great....more info - it's not at all like they say it is !!!!!
thought i paid a bargain price, because of the 50% off pricing with the good reviews on the product.
but, it turns out, the product is not all it was cracked up to be.
i really don't see too much differnce in quality of the sound or the convenience for the money that i paid for.
my recommendation, just get a decent regular, or, even sticking with the original ear phone that comes with most of the product that requires earphone(i-pod, mp3 players, or computers...), you are not missing anything.
bottom lime, it's not worth the money to pay too much money for a set of high end in-ear phone....more info - Clear accurate sound and a company that stands behind their product
These headphones deliver clear, accurate sound with enough noise reduction (blocking) that I can enjoy music even in very noisy environments. The company has responded quickly to my correspondence (I had a mishap with them while under warranty) and replaced them right away.
I believe others have commented in detail on the sound, so I'll just say that the midrange is extremely "present" and alive, highs are crisp, and I get enough bass to be satisfied.
The in-canal design takes a little getting used to, but patience will reward you with comfortable and great sounding earphones. A superb value. ...more info - mixed feelings as quality fades
I first purchased a pair of these years ago. At two years, the right channel died. Bought a new pair. They lasted another two years, until mis-placed.
The latest pair from Amazon came with a dead right channel, it would cut in and out as you moved your head. The replacements are holding up fine, but I now view these as a consumable. Figure a couples of years use.
I like the sound quality, and the fit works well for me.
...more info - very good product
These sound good, stay in my ear, and they really do well in reducing wind noise, I bought them for long motorcycle trips, They are worth the money!...more info - Sorry, but these just don't cut it
I've given these a fair try and tried every possible permutation of eartip style.
I know how to use earplugs because I use them for sleeping . I also have excellent hearing and do NOT enjoy a booming bass in my music.
No matter what I do , the best I can get out of these is a mediocre , and shrill sound performance. Even when there IS some bass, the mid range is 'flat' and high ranges are harsh, where the same source played through speakers or other external headphones sounds much better.
Could be a matter of ear canal shape/size, but at best , buying these will be a gamble for anyone. Be prepared for the trouble of returning them.

These are really good canal ear phones. They keep the ambient noise from polluting your music. Also, since they keep outside noise out, you don't need to turn up your music so loud to hear every note or word. The highs are crisp and clean and the lows are adequate. Any earphones like these suffer the same drawback, which is bass. When in your ears correctly, the bass is acceptable. The stock iPod ear buds have deeper bass, but sound muddy compared to these. I use these just about every time I use my iPod. They work well in an airplane and block out the noise while vacuuming. ...more info - Audio Bliss
These buds are amazing. The sound clarity is phenomenal, and the isolation is superb. They come with two sets of buds, the triple flange, and the foam tips. I personally use the former. I tried the foam ones once, and while they worked the same, they just looked too tacky. I easily dirtied them up though, and would not recommend them. The case to store it all in is very nice. A small, minimalistic pouch with a nice soft interior and a pouch/net for accessories.
There are only a few drawbacks. The price is a bit high, but that is expected for this kind of quality. The foam tips would need replacing _very_ often. Flanges requiring cleaning every day or so of continual use, depending on your ears. Filters can be expensive to purchase, and you should replace those every couple of months as they get dirty.
Pros:
Amazing sound quality
Excellent noise isolation
Compliment to Ipod
Small, light
Very good pack-ins (case, extra filters/buds)
Cons:
Expect to clean the flanges often
Filters are expensive to buy
Filters must be replaced periodically (months)
Foam Buds are very easy to dirty/break...more info - Find something newer
Poor bass, clarity is great but not enough bass ruins these IEM's. Returned these and got the nuforce ne-7m, they sound nearly the same but with more bass without loosing the clarity. I'm no bass head either. filters will cost you money every few months, and the inserts go in deep in the canal....more info - Coincidence?
Is it a coincidence that Etymotic only provides a 1 year warranty on the ER6i's, and the headphones I got on 12/18/2006 started to deteriorate at the beginning of January 2008? I had actually bought 2 sets of ER6i's back in 2006, one each for myself and my girlfriend. We both are experiencing the same problem; hers started about 2 weeks before mine. The flexible joint where the cord meets the plug has some kind of break or deterioration in the internal wire. Unless the joint is bent and held at a certain angle, one of the earbuds will completely lose sound.
To be honest, I haven't treated these headphones with the best care possible, meaning I don't always put them back into the little pouch that came with it, and I haven't changed the filters in the earbuds yet. But come on, breaking down after 1 year?! I thought these ER6i's would've lasted longer than the cheaper Sony MDR-EX71s that I used to use, and also lasted only a year before one earbut completely went dead. And guess which headphones are still working for me? The original ones from Apple that came with my first generation iPod Nano. Yep, 3 years later and still going strong.
Don't get me wrong, the ER6i's put out fantastic sound quality. But this issue with the cord is just infuriating....more info - Best ear phones i've ever owned!
These are exactly what they claim and say... awesome high fidelity, sound isolating. I ride a motorcycle and they work like a charm, keeping the road and pipe noise down. I highly recommend it!...more info - Wonderful
I bought these about three years ago and LOVED them instantly. The sound quality is great, and they isolate very well (sometimes I used them in a pinch as earplugs while I slept). I thought they were slightly uncomfortable at first but I got used to them quickly.
Recently I lost them (or so I thought) but they actually went through the washing machine with my clothes. I thought all hope was lost... until I plugged them into my computer and they still worked perfectly fine! (I probably got lucky and I don't recommend trying this...)
All in all these were really wonderful up until about a month ago. One side had sound that was so faint I couldn't hear it anymore. The rubber flange tip will also not stay on that side anymore... It will come off inside my ear canal when I try to remove the earbud.
Needless to say, I'm not complaining because I've had them for so long, and they worked perfectly up until now AND went through the washing machine. The cord tends to tangle a bit more than other headphones I've had but it's not a big deal. The cord is really long too-- a definite plus.
Definitely worth the money....more info - Incredible performance and value
These are great value for the money. I recommend these earbuds without reservation. They work well in the noisy gym and on the plane to cut out all the distracting noise. The music sounds good but you must seat the earphone down into the ear canal and get a seal. My husband tried mine and liked them better than his Bose so bought his own pair. If you are looking for sound studio music reproduction go for the $400 Shures. ...more info - Amazing Headphones... Period.
I've had these headphones for about a year and a half now. Except for the past couple of weeks I use them at least a few times every single week. The quality of the headphones, both in the sound and in physical ability to withstand any situation, are truly incredible. I work out with them, walk around campus, and some times just use them to block out sound so I can get work done. They definitely rival serious sound systems in their ability to reproduce high, medium, and bass levels of sound.
When I first got the product, it took me a little while to get into the trend to actually put them in correctly and get the bass going (if they don't fit well, you will complain that the bass isn't good.. in reality, the bass is amazing). The instructions say exactly what to do to make them work the best.
I have changed my filters once, not because they were blocked but because I just thought it was time to since I had extra ones any way and the sound has always been great.
I am very impressed with this product as an in-the-ear headphone as well as a noise cancelling device. I recommend this product to anyone who is looking.
P.S. Don't bike or drive with them in because the noise cancelling is too good and dangerous in these situations....more info
