Customer Reviews: - Bear is a great potty teacher
I own a home daycare and purchased the DVD. My 2 year old's love the DVD, they watch it over and over! I already am seeing improvement in their potty training. And I can use Bear as an example now. He's great!...more info - I have the VHS version
But I'm writing about the show itself and not the dvd features and whatnot. This show really would be a 4 or 5 star if it wasn't for that rediculious shadow segment. The first one I watched, the potty episode, I thought, well, perhaps all of them aren't that bad...but all three episodes featured this terrible shadow segment that has no value to the show. The segment in the potty episode is "The Potty Train" which when reading this you might think, what? That's obviously related. But sadly no, it's meant to sound like some black or brooklyn/queens area slang for Party, nothing to do with learing how to use the toilet and it has ...nevermind, not going to bother explaining it anymore. It's stupid. That is the only way to put it.
The rest of the show however is wonderful. We can't get enough of the dancing bear(who my son says is his Granddanny) It's educational(not as educational as some, like blues clues or leap frog) fun, the songs are great, the potty episode songs had my husband and me rolling on the floor laughing with lines like "my you're suave and debonaire in your pair of underwear"
Overall a great by, but I'd have to recommend the VHS version so you can edit out the shadow segmant.....It just ruins bear in the big blue house....more info - Excellent and entertaining too!
While not an intensive potty training video, it does introduce the concept of all stages of potty training (from knowing when you've got to go, to washing up and flushing) and discusses it in positive and non-threatening ways. My 18 month old daughter loves the songs (she'll squeal, clap and bounce to them) and the puppets are lots of fun.
As a Mom, what I love about it is that it's not one of those jumpy videos that flash from one scene to another to another. Babies' brains are still being hard-wired until they're two and a half, so jumpy videos tend to decrease their attention span. This one nicely pans from room to room and follows the characters around keeping things calm and coherent, rather than using short and frantic cuts from one thing to the next.
The use of puppets, as one reviewer already mentioned, is much easier for little ones to comprehend and relate to than animation, and like I said before, it tends to be less jumpy too.
I wish I could give this one 6 stars -- we've had it for months and I'm still not sick of it yet. That's a big plus for any baby video that is going to be played over and over and over... :)
I'd introduce this one to your child when they're about a year old, then when it's time to potty train, also add a more intensive potty training video like "Potty Power", which also has excellent reviews.
This DVD has has 3 episodes, but only one dealing with the potty. The other two are excellent as well, however, just as long as you don't expect to get all 3 on potty training....more info - Potty Training
I am not sure what to say about this DVD...our daughter seems to like the beginning...not sure if she understands...but we are potty training. I am sure we will be watching this a lot more.
I am sure there is better ones out there...could be alot worse....more info - It helped me aim straight.
This is educational and fun. Now i don't have to wipe down the floor after evey time nature calls. Period.
PS: The whiney mouse is a riot....more info - It was okay....but my daughter responded better to "potty power"
My daughter has been a huge fan of bear since she was tiny. I had heard several good things about the Bear potty episode, and decided what the heck. After reading the reviews on some other potty-type DVDs I saw one called "potty power" that had gotten good reviews, and decided to give it a try too (plus it put me over the $25 so I could get free shipping haha). I must say she liked the bear DVD, but potty power gave us IMMEDIATE results. From the first night she watched potty power she has not had an accident since--I think something just "clicked" with her.
IMO, Bear was fun to watch, but it didn't really lay it all out there like potty power did. I didn't feel like it was blunt enough for my daughter, but that was just my experience.
Anyway, if you are looking for a potty DVD, I would give bear a try, but also maybe go check out Potty Power as well....more info - my daughter loved this one
My daughter (when she was about two) loved this movie and wanted to watch it again and again. It's sweet and explains the potty process in
a simple and non pushy way....more info - Potty Time With Bear
I am a retired Pediatric Nurse and Grandmother who has used this Potty Training DVD since it was on VHS and its absolutely wonderful, not to mention funny for adults to watch. Start letting your child watch it before potty training time. It makes the whole process so much easier because they understand what is expected way before its time to use the knowledge. Currently my 5th grandson is watching it, and has been since he was a year old. He loves it.
Suzanne from N.C....more info - Fun Motivation
My grandson loves this video. We got it when he started potty training and he still sings the songs. His favorite part was to discover from the Bear that everybody, even Mommy and Daddy, had a potty chair. Seeing the Bear that he recognized from TV encouraging him to be potty trained provided real motivation....more info - Young Two- Year Old Loves This!
I bought this for my 26-month old grandson. He loves to watch this ! He asks to see it, I think because of the bear. I can tell he is not ready to put on the potty, but this is a delightful introduction for a young child. He is becoming aware, thanks to this DVD....more info - Potty Time With Bear is Great!
I purchased this DVD last September when my daughter was 2 1/2
and we were ready to start the potty training process. She loves it! My husband and I thought it was fun, too. Unlike another viewer, we also enjoyed "Shadow"'s segment.
My daughter now calls toilets everywhere "potty chairs", which I think is cute. We also bought the Bear in the Big Blue House "Going Potty" book, which she keeps in the bathroom near her potty chair.
Did this help with the actual potty training? Probably not, as we still don't have it together yet, but are farther along than when we started. I'm not really pushing the issue until she turns 3 next month (advice from "The Girlfriend's Guide to Toddlers").
Thus far, this is the only potty training DVD we have purchased, so I can't compare to others, but we really do have a good time looking at this one. ...more info - Love this Series!
My kids are really into this series and enjoy dancing to the songs and my son, age 2 and half, enjoys talking to the tv by answering Bear's questions. He is also speaking up more to let us know he needs help to go Potty, and that is a big plus for us....more info - Really motivated!
This really motivated my 3-yr-old son to start sitting on the potty! The first episode is the only one that is specifically about potty training, so we started by only watching that one. After watching it three times in a row, he was willing for the first time to sit on his potty sans diaper. No, it won't teach him all the steps to going potty (although it does mention them), but I can do that. Bear gave him the interest in training--something I can't teach him. One thing I really liked was the part about interrupting fun things to go potty; the fun will be waiting when you get back.
The other two episodes have become favorites, too. One is about practicing new skills, and the other is about accomplishments. Both themes are related to potty training, and you can always talk about them with your kid to help him/her get the connection. I should mention that it's cute & clever enough to not drive me crazy having it played repeatedly--always an important consideration!...more info - Pass!
My almost 3-year-old twins love movies, but will not watch this boring, somewhat bizarre collection. There are better potty training videos out there. Pass on this one....more info
