Product Description

Zany antics prevail in this screwball comedy about an eccentric woman and an equally eccentric professor. Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 12/06/2005 Starring: Barbra Streisand Ryan Oneal Run time: 94 minutes Rating: G Director: Peter Bogdanovich

Director Peter Bogdanovich (The Last Picture Show) tipped his hat to the classic screwball comedies of the 1930s, and especially the most glorious of them all, Howard Hawks' Bringing Up Baby. Barbra Streisand plays a charming flake who distracts a self-absorbed musicologist (Ryan O'Neal). He's engaged to be married, but soon Streisand's character has him chasing after stolen jewelry and getting into one madcap fix after another. Bogdanovich, who is also a film critic, understands the engine of the screwball genre, and his loving revival of the form brings a smile, though it is not quite consistently inspired or funny. There are plenty of great moments, however, including a slap at O'Neal's own star-making vehicle, Love Story. --Tom Keogh

  • A Great Screwball Comedy
Wild! I love this movie. It never gets old. This is the movie that has fueled my own writing because of all the crazy dialogue. Buy it, you won't be disappointed. ...more info
  • Cult Favorite!!
Although from the 1970's this is one of my all time "cult favorites." No cursing, no sex, just a lot of laughs. I can quote to many lines from the movie I've seen it so many times....more info
  • Great DVD and a terrific transaction
"What's Up Doc" featured Streisand and O'Neal at the peak of their careers. I remember watching this film in a theatre when it first came out and laughing so hard I nearly 'lost' my popcorn. It was a great relief to find it's just as funny today.

The DVD I purchased was brand new and delivered super fast. I'm 100% happy with this transaction!...more info
  • Barbara Streisand & Madeline Kahn at their finest!
The comedic timing and the wonderful acting in this movie makes it one that you'll want to watch over and over again. I first saw this as a child (probably around 8-10) and loved it. I recently bought it here off Amazon since I couldn't find it in any video place to rent. I'm glad I bought it! My husband and I laughed and laughed. Barbara Streisand is uproarously funny as the screw up Judy who causes mayhem anywhere she goes. Poor Ryan O'Neal gets caught up in the middle of things when he meets Judy and his life falls apart, but for the better. Madeline Kahn's performance as O'Neal's fiance is hilarious and you can see why she becomes such a great comedy actress in future roles like in Young Frankenstein (also highly recommend). This is a comedy classic and everyone should watch it!...more info
  • Screwball antics
A glorious romp which seeks to recapture the golden age of screwball comedies and very nearly succeeds. Fast and funny with a keystone kop car chase slap in the middle it is driven by a strong, sexy and sassy central performance from Streisand.
It has stood up very well considering it's now over thirty years old. She still looks gorgeous and what a voice!
The plot makes no sense but who cares?! just put your brain in neutral and enjoy the ride....more info
  • Classic Barbra
Love Barbra Streisand in this movie. I am partial to the joint venture of Streisand and O'neil. I have had great laughs with this movie and I can never forget it. A trully funny movie of the 60's era with a great support cast. ...more info
  • Timeless comedy classic
What's Up Doc is a timeless comedy classic that shows Ryan O'Neal and Barbra Streisand at their funny best. If you like to laugh and appreciate good gags, this movie is a good one to have and watch. The late, great Madeline Kahn makes her feature film debut in this movie and her performance is priceless as well. The entire movie builds up to the final scene where O'Neal utters his absolutely perfect final line, but you have to know a little movie history and be familiar with his work to get it. No spoilers here - you will have to get a copy and watch, and enjoy! Good clean family fun. ...more info
  • what's Up, doc
It is not as good as her The Owl & The Pussycat movie. It was more silly than I remembered. But it is nice to see Babs in her youth....more info
  • Slow and Slower
I ordered 2 movie DVDs on 7/27/05. One arrived quickly. This one is still on hold after 1 month. Amazon says I may get it next month, maybe later. If you are in a hurry for classic movie comedies, you may be better off with another vendor....more info
  • Sight comedy at its very best!
For the first time in about 30 years I have seen this movie on DVD. I am glad I own a copy of this. Ryan O'Neil and Barbra Streisand are in simply hilarious in this 1972 comedy. Madeline Kahn was also a joy to watch in this film. Barbra can sing but she can really make you laugh with this! Enjoy!!...more info
  • Absolutely hilarious!
This movie is a great comedy. Full of pratfalls, physical and situational humor. Appropriate for all ages, different ages will pick up on different aspects, but all will be laughing!...more info
  • Farce made boring.
I guess people will vote "no" on this review because they don't agree, but here's my opinion:

Screwball/farce comedy can be great. And director Peter Bogdanovich is capable of making them; just look at "Noises Off". But "What's Up, Doc?" doesn't even come close. The script is a mess, it starts out with no introduction whatsoever of either the plot or the characters (all of which are annoying). It goes on as an unfunny farce for about half an hour, then it slows down with romantic scenes between Streisand and O'Neal. Then the farce starts again, stopping again for two long ending sequences, one in a courtroom and one in an airport. All of the farce scenes are enervating instead of funny and uses every clich¨¦ in the book, such as construction worker's walking arund with a window glass, getting in the way of a car chase.
"What's Up, Doc?" is a very overrated farce. All of the gags are recycled and were made better in other movies. ...more info
  • Classic goofball comedy
This movie is a laugh a minute all the way through. It gets crazier as it goes along. My kids ages 6 and 9 were laughing out loud. ...more info
  • Great Film, but order it somewhere else...
I ended up having to cancel my order after 2 months of waiting (I had ordered 2 copies; one was to be a gift) - fiasco after annoying fiasco. Don't bother ordering obscure DVD titles such as this - You won't get them. It spoiled my faith in Amazon.com and soiled their reputation (in my eyes, at least.). After cancelling my order they were oh, so very sorry, but there was nothing else they could do. I could do something, though......more info
  • What's Up, Doc?
This is absolutely hilarious. I loved it the very first time that I saw it in a theater, back in 1972; and still do. I enjoy it everytime that I watch it. It's a great comedy, and I would highly recommend it for anyone's movie library....more info
  • "Howard! Howard Bannister!"
While Barbra Streisand and Ryan O'Neal are marvelous as Judy the walking disaster area and Howard the rock-absorbed professor of music, respectively, the movie is stolen by Madeline Kahn as Eunice Burns, Howard's overbearing fiance (but then Howard does need a keeper). This tale of four plaid carpetbags, a musicologists' grant competition, spies, jewel thieves and other assorted loonies will keep you laughing. Watch for Kenneth Mars in a zany performance as O'Neal's rival for the grant....more info
  • Slapstick Comedy
This was made back in the day when slapstick comedy meant you were laughing out loud and your entire family could watch the movie.

    AWESOME MOVIE....more info
  • I beg To Differ
What's Up Doc could have been great, but it lacks two things: a male lead and... pace. Coincidence? I think not. Ryan O'Neal's character is in the early stages of Alzhiemers Disease, and is no condition to hold up his end of the movie. We need a rational person to identify with. Steisand's character is the screwball. She can't do it. Kahn's character is the jilted woman. She can't do it. Basically, nobody does it.

Meanwhile, a screwball comedy needs pace, and O'Neal's lack of comic timing is distructive interference to everyone around him. It's like he's pushing the movie on a swing at the wrong moments, jaring it instead of propelling it. Bogdanovich doesn't seem to notice. It's all pretty awful, but not consistently. There are some scenes with energetic sight gags and little acting. These are carried off by competent stunt people, and not incompetent leading men. The result, while not entirely meritless, is mixed at best.

So I'll tell ya what's up, Doc. Bringin' Up Baby it ain't!
Badeeya Badeeya Badeeya! That's all folks!...more info
  • Loads of fun, and a great chase scene!
A mix up of look alike suitcases causes some funny and tense situations in this film--see if you can keep track of them. There is one unforgettable chase scene, in which O'Neil and Streisand are getting away from would-be captors on...an ice cream cart!...and are chased by bad men in cars, through the streets of San Francisco! It's a wild ride that will cause your heart to race. Plenty of laughs, too. Good, clean fun for the family....more info
  • this is my favorite movie of all time
This is the one I watch when I'm down in the dumps and need a lift. I know every line by heart, and drive my family crazy by laughing in anticipation of the next hilarious line. "I know I'm different, but from now on I'm going to try to be the same." "The same as what?" "The same as people who aren't different." If you've never seen this movie, by all means, give yourself a treat. It's the silliest, funniest escape from daily stress, and I guarantee you'll laugh out loud....more info
  • FUNNY, FUNNY, FUNNY
This is one of the funniest movies made. The chase scene is manic and the courtroom scene is a comic classic. So many familiar faces. This is a must see!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...more info
  • The Good Old Days
This movie is so sweet and gentle that it is hard not to like it. It really is a 1930's style romantic comedy in all respects. Also, I've never seen a movie that has such bright and vivid colors - the blues and yellows are just electric, and as such, this film was shot to perfection. Both Ryan and Barbra are in their youthful-looking prime and there is a great assortment of charactor actors in support. A fine film....more info
  • The Best comedy under the radar
I will try not to repeat what has already been said. Me and my brother use to watch this flick back in the 80's when we were kids. The comedy spoke to us. We couldn't get enough of it. It even had Boss Hogg in it. Who can forget him tripping the old rich lady over and over down the hotel hall. Brilliant!
Then there is the guy who is following the goverment agent and he is carring those golf clubs all over town and he keeps throwing clubs out as the chase gets longer...those are the small details of comedy that this flick is loaded with. The old granny at Mr. Larraby's reception when the fight breaks out and she picks up the gun and just pops caps off in the air....genius!
Barbara looks sexy as hell all tanned out and whitty as can be.
so many lines...the coutroom scene at the end is so funny.
Judge- "you see this blue pill...you know what its for...to remind me to take the yellow pill"
Kid- "I want my Bike back"
Judge- "I'll give ya your bike back...I'll give you a broken back if you don't shut up"
Agent-"I can tell you that in this bag is none other than top secret government....Underwear! Underwear?
    BUY IT!...more info
  • One of the funniest movies of all time
Can you imagine making your acting debut in a movie of this quality? Madeline Kahn began her brilliant career as a spot-on type A personality engaged to Howard Bannister, the ultimate absent-minded professor. Ryan ONeal likewise redeemed his reputation after his syrupy experience with Love Story. Streisand portrays the high-powered whirlwind interloper. Spies, real car chases, jewel thieves, and a cascade of mix-ups and wrong turns round out one of the most deftly directed comedies ever. This is a real comedy -- you actually laugh while watching it, sometimes to the point of tears. Watch What's Up Doc as a family. Many of the lines will become part of your family communication tradition....more info
  • One of the funniest movies ever!
What's up duck provides the right chemistry to cure the soul. We have a friend who is recuperating from a broken leg, Martha Oliva, and Alessandra Prado, Alex Ariano and myself, went to the rescue. We took a bucket of Chinese Rice for dinner and this DVD, because we knew that watching this film would provide laughter and a distraction from any ailment.

This movie is a classic comedy, delighting audiences of all ages, and surviving the test of time, for it was filmed in 1972 and today, in 2007 we still watch it to find it one of the funniest movies ever!

Barbra Streisand plays a young woman who falls in love at first sight with a distracted, self-absorbed musicologist, played by Ryan O'Neal. He is engaged to be married to Eunice, played by Madeline Kahn, but this does not seem to be an impediment for the character played by Barbra Streisand.

The plot is simply too good to explain, you must watch and enjoy the film. It all centers around plaid suit-cases, one containing top secret documents, another containing precious jewels, a third containing rocks and a fourth simply containing the wardrobe of our heroine.

As these get mixed up... we encounter some of the best sequences ever filmed.

  • Fun Family Film
It's too bad Hollywood does not make screwball comedies like this one anymore--enjoyable for kids, "tweens", and parents without containing scenes/language that make parents squirm. Our kids loved it and we enjoyed it too. Madeleine Kahn gives a hilarious performance as "Eunice". Has lots of familiar faces from the 70's....more info
  • Hilarious back there and then.
I remember this film from the cinema. A tremendous sense of joy, crazy laughter and carefreeness(is there such a word?). It was the sum of a number of large and small parts. Barbara Streisand, of course, in sexy/funny days. Madeline Kahn; hanging on to the doorman's leg, being dragged through the banquet. Lot's of almost cameos, guy with golf clubs, revolutionary, Hotel Burglar, Crooked Manager etc.. Ryan O'Neal was there as well.

I sat with my sons(of 13 & 15) and they did enjoy it. Luckily I hadn't hyped it up beforehand.

Remember those screwball movies ? Maybe it only works after we forget.

Sometimes, you just have to remember the first feelings of the time. I'll still keep it securely amongst my possessions. Maybe my son's children will discover it and those first feelings will be passed on.

A DVD and a feeling worth having. Don't expect it all to return in a instant though, if you have memories of the time....more info

  • A lovely visit to an old genre.
The likeness to films such as "Bringing up Baby", a hilarious Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn romp from the 30's, has been made before but this film is really more the updated version with an entirely different script and jokes for a modern audience.
The film really only echo's the madcap pace and utter silliness of the plot of it's predacessor, and ofcourse revitalises the genre.
Because the 70's was the era of action movies it is very much the madcap comedy, "on the road" and the San Francisco car/bike/chinese dragon chase is superbly executed! (and if you haven't seen the film this scene is even crazier than I make it sound, it stands out as the climactic scene and simply must be seen even if you don't do the rest of the film!)
Streisand is zany, snappy and has acidic wit and snappy timing. O'Neal is perfect as the hapless, hopeless boffin.
Khan (god rest her sweet soul) is the her usual whacky, laugh out loud self; I find some differing subtle in her comedy ever time I re-watch some of her work and she is just brilliant in this.
A highly recommended screwball bunch of fun, the perfect curl up and have fun film. Now undoubtedly a classic, even good old Bugs get's in on the action; well the title is his catchphrase!...more info
  • It's the Tops
I saw this movie when it first came out in the theater. I laughed hysterically then, and on viewing it now I still laugh. There are priceless comic bits throughout the movie - "Use your charm", Madeline Kahn's whimpers reading the sex book in bed, the taxi driver answering "Yes, Eunice", Vocal Reverberation under Spinal Pressure, etc., etc., etc.

Loosely taking Bringing up Baby as a pattern, this film inserts 4 suitcases for 2 leopards, tosses in the screwball female with the nerdy professor and comes up a winner. But while Bringing up Baby had a great comedic cast, the ensemble here actually does it one better. Madeline Kahn is a scene stealer right from the start. You do not realize how hilarious her performance is until you go back and watch the film a second or even a third or fourth time - to see where the original script would have placed the focus of the action, and then how she manages in her understated way to garner the attention.

The other cast members are priceless as well - Austin Pendleton (the stuttering attorney in My Cousin Vinny) is great as Frederick Larrabee, donor of the Larrabee prize. His reaction throughout the banquet scene to Streisand is fantastic - "She's a gem" - making Ryan O'Neal/Howard Bannister's renunciation of Madeline Kahn/Eunice Burns inevitable. Kenneth Mars is the other conniving aspirant to the Larrabee grant, John Hillerman is the hotel manager who has just had a room destroyed, and a bit of Buck Henry and Randy Quaid at the banquet. There are so many great minor performances that it is impossible to document them without presenting an endless list....

The chase scene is the final third of the movie and it is one of the biggest, most over-the-top chase scenes envisioned. Bogdonavich took all the wacky chase scenes from the silent films and compressed them into this one. You have the just-missing-the plate glass window scene, the just-missing the newly poured cement scene, and the addition of a chinese dragon, a VW, strange costumes, the SF harbor ferry, and a bicycle.

See this movie - you'll laugh, then laugh again, and again and again...

  • Streisand's finest comic showcase...
Perhaps it's because the large, colorful, high-spirited cast works as an ensemble that this is the movie non-Streisand addicts seem to like best. Certainly she's delightful in it, sparkling and kooky, and Peter Bogdanovich evens lets her sing a bit("You're The Top", behind the opening credits, features an incredible Barbra vocal). The film looks amazing on DVD widescreen and Streisand's scene-specific commentary is wonderful(personally, I like the scene-specific option much better, the actress isn't stuck having to comment over 94 minutes of screen time and can just give her freshest recollections). A wild, cartoony comedy with lots of sight-gags and big laughs. My favorite line? "I have ledge-aphobia". ...more info

  • Bringing Up Babsy
Let me preface my review by saying I have an innate loathing of Barbra Streisand. My reasons are manyfold not the least her excreable left-wing politics. Nobody was more gleeful than when Trey Parker and Matt Stone tweaked her on "South Park". Giving the devil her due La Babs in "What's Up Doc" is...tolerable. I watched this film mainly because I'm a big fan of Peter Bogdanovich. I love his reverence for old movies. Here Bogdanovich pays homage to the screwball comedies of the thirties and forties. His reference point here seems to be Howard Hawks' screwball masterwork, "Bringing Up Baby". Bogdanovich is audacious in trying to evoke this classic and he mostly succeeds. The films strength is in the script's witty verbiage. It falters slightly in the tired slapstick that permeates the latter part of the film. There's a great cast that Bogdanovich surrounds the diva with. Ryan O'Neal proves to be an adept light comedian here. Bogdanovich later employed O'Neal to better use in "Paper Moon" in 1973. Only Stanley Kubrick with "Barry Lyndon" seemed to fully utilize O'Neal's talents. The support here is a dream with Madeline Kahn, Kenneth Mars, Austin Pendleton, and John Hillerman. I particularly liked Liam Dunn in a small part as a harried judge. Not classic but a great homage to a style of comedy that will never go out of fashion....more info
  • Screwball Comedy at Its Funniest!
You will never love Barbra Streisand more in any other film than "What's Up, Doc." This "Love Story" is a treasure chest of pop-cultural references
and classic comedians who should never be forgotten. Screwball comedy has never been more believable or entertaining than in this Streisand classic. Let the carrots for Bugs and Babs, butter the popcorn and laugh your way through an afternoon of comedic history....more info
  • What up doc? The Laughs
This movie stands the test of time. What a funny movie. My wife saw this movie years ago and convinced me to watch this. The jokes are timeless, the story fast paced and the laugh out loud moments never end. This is a definite plus to a collection of screwball comedy. What a wonderful funny and fun movie. This is a classic that is a must own, and a joy for the family to watch as well. I would recomend this movie to anyone that loves a great laugh....more info
