Product Description

As a placeholder between the full-length Pretty Hate Machine and The Downward Spiral, Broken packs a serious punch. Angrier and less poppy than Machine, this EP is full of noisy hooks, if such a thing is possible (check out that guitar riff on the full-throttle "Wish"), and much closer aesthetically to the industrial subgenre that informs Trent Reznor's music. As song titles like "Help Me I Am in Hell" suggest, Broken is a work of undiluted rage, which is, of course, a big part of its appeal. --Genevieve Williams

  • Balls to the wall and all that stuff
8 tracks in reality, 2 of which are instrumental and all in all nothing in relation to Pretty Hate Machine this is where the Reznorites really get to sink their teeth into the hatred. Useful EP but ultimately this is the beginning of the end really...more info
  • Nine Inch Nails - 'Broken' (Interscope) EP
'Broken' was like a follow-up EP to the 'Pretty Hate Machine' CD,as NIN vocalist/frontman/producer Trent Reznor was experiencing some legal hassles regarding putting out new NIN material.I remember playing this six song EP over many times when it first came out.Liked the industrial metal goods, such as "Pinion","Wish" and especially happening "Happiness In Slavery" as I used to put this song on my home answering machine.Very well done....more info
  • Very Interesting
I started listening to NIN after finding out that Mr. Trent Reznor helped in the making of one of my favorite CDs, AntiChrist Superstar. And after listening to a lot of NIN, i can easily hear the link between AS and NIN's music. Which is good becuase i loved that CD and I'm happy that theres an entire band that sounds like that. Also, about the hidden track, thats the exact same thing they did on the AS album, adding around 90 empty tracks of blank noises to hide the last song....more info
  • Angry Short Album
This EP is actually 8 songs... 2 being interludes so i guess that only makes 6 solid tracks. but it has definite energy. this was back in trent's angry industrial stage which has now turned into a more melodic period. this EP is a must have for any NIN fan...more info
  • Essential Recording
Broken is a great album, pure and simple. In my opinion, this is the pinnacle of all of Trent's heavier efforts; unrelenting, sharp, focused, and very, very good. What makes it such an effective record, in my mind, is how you can listen to it song to song casually or as a single, cohesive piece of work. Every song flows into the next, building intensity up and tearing it down again violently and without warning, making the initial listening experience a visceral, on-edge affair. I defy you not to jump in your seat as "Help Me I Am in Hell" screams into "Happiness in Slavery," especially if you have the volume up (like I did) to hear every nuance of the brittle guitar strum and the muted storm brewing in the background. After "Gave Up" erodes into complete electronic chaos, the 92 second break creates a kind of calm before the kiddie-grinder coughs back to life, and a pair of covers, "Physical" and "Suck," wrap it all up.

In summation, the high points on this album are many and the low points are few (if any). Please purchase if you haven't already....more info
  • I was surprised!
This is a pretty good album. This is one of the better idustrial/Metal albums I have heard. I bought this because I like the song 'Last' and I listened to the whole thing and thought it was really good. Trent Rezner wrights some really good lyrics, and his lyric ability doesnt fall short here on Broken. I cant belive Trant plays everything on the record but like two guitar parts. He is really talented, though he is not as good as Maralen Manson, he sure can wright a better song. This album is full of great songs, you wount be dissapointed in buying this record. If you like Manson, or Ministry, then trust me you will like this it has everything a good Industioal/Metal album needs. The guitar is good for this genra, and the beats and rythms are great. For someone new to this genra or to NIN I would recemend This or The Downward Spiral, both of with are by NIN....more info
  • Something real, Something true
What Trent screams for in the Broken hit, Wish, foreshadows exactly what this cd has to offer. At first (having heard The Fragile first) i was sceptical about the wall of sound offered by Broken, even the title is kinda scary. But Broken is merely a loud plea for help, and an outburst against society.

Broken is not nin's best album, as it is only an EP, but what is delivered is great. Hard rock with an industrial twist, broken is a great anthem for the downtrodden, depressed, constrained, and angry. It vents emotion like no other cd, letting out what we deny as raw, human emotion.

From the power intro of Pinion all the way to song 99, Suck, every beat is felt. Even the silence is great, as (Youre So)Physical is almost like a break from the rest of the songs. A great cd of pain and angst, worth anyones time

(as said by others, avoid the Happiness in Slavery video, as well as the 20 minute Broken video/movie, thats some sick s***)...more info

  • Whoa, now he's really getting angry!
    (4.5 Stars)

"Broken" is an essential EP that serves as a bridge between the dance/pop feel of "Pretty Hate Machine" and the intense, anguish of "The Downward Spiral". All of a sudden, Trent sounds a helluva lot angrier and LOUDER..much louder.

"Wish" is a heart pounding kickstart, with a maddening, rapid beat and abrasive, metal like guitars. This is *intense* stuff, way more intense than anything on "Pretty Hate Machine".

The same applies to "Last", which ranges from raucous to even more raucous! The omnious instrumental "Help Me I Am In Hell" leads into the killer "Happiness In Slavery", which is pretty risque stuff, lyrically, for 1992. The verses are nice and noisy, and the chorus is a bit more beat heavy like that of "Pretty Hate Machine". Controversy aside, it's an awesome song.

Finally, there's "Gave Up", with its machine gun-like beat and acidic, anguished chorus. Noticing a trend here?

Oh wait, there's also two hidden tracks. There's the sexual grind of "(You're So) Physical", and the industrial-funk of "Suck". More good stuff.

"Broken" may not be a full length album, but it's an essential EP to own, as it shows how Trent evolved from his "Pretty Hate Machine" into his "Downward Spiral". And changing sound aside, it also has some awesome songs....more info
  • NIN's most hardcore CD
Here is my o-"Pinion" on NIN's Broken. This EP is very "Physical" but it [is not bad]". Many fans "Gave Up" on Trent Reznor after Broken because they loved the "Last" album, Pretty Hate Machine, with its beautiful lyrics and synthesized sound. I have not really found "Happiness In Slavery", yet I had a dream the other night where i woke up screaming "Help Me I Am In Hell". That didn't really happen, though. But I do "Wish" i could see Nine Inch Nails live....more info
  • Trent rocks!
I love this record!!!! Broken is probably the most aggressive NIN album yet made...verry hard hitting angry industrial metal. As always the music is amazing, verry well composed, NIN truly is an exceptional artist....more info
  • Trent is not Broken and at the same time he is.
Although I am a fairly new Nine inch nails fan, this record immediately grabbed me. An angry, heavy, short and complex effort from NIN is exactly what this is. When one opens this little EP of Trent's they are greeted to a rather unusual packaging as well as 99 tracks.

    1. Pinion 3/5: an Intro that is so-so, it could have built up to a real song, but its alright as far as Intro's go.
    2. Wish 10/10: Awesome, Sweet, Excellent and Kickass can all be used to describe this song.
    3. Last 10/10: equally as sweet as the last track, this one sounds a bit like closer in terms of lyrics, its awesome.
    4. Help me I am in hell 5/10: This is really the only flaw on the album, an Instrumental on an EP, that is neither grabbing nor boring but as it is only 1:56, it only serves as the buildup to the next song, and comes across to the listener as unnecessary and disappointing. A song like this doesn't belong on an EP.
    5. Happiness in Slavery 10/10: almost forgives the last track, I just love the middle part of the song. The live version from the Woodstock 94 concert is cool as they added a solo and Trent demolished a keyboard.
    6. Gave Up 10/10 yet another hard hitting track, which is very much like tracks 2 and 3 yet it stands on its own.
    98. Physical (you're so) 8/10: a cool Adam Ant cover that outdoes the original but it is weaker in comparison to everything else here.
    99. Suck 10/10 an awesome Pigface cover that outdoes the original.

This album makes a great companion to the Downward Spiral, filled with anger, excitement and complex and detailed musicianship brought to us by Trent Reznor. Even though there is an intro and a unnecessary instrumental, the other songs are just so good that I can't help but give this a 5/5. Broken is definitely a must have for any NIN fan, whether you are new or old. Hoped this helped.

  • White hot anger.
When I first got "Broken" years ago, I thought it was brilliant-- I was young, somewhat isolated, and angry, it worked well for me. In the intervening years, I've discovered its not really quite the record I thought it was. Reznor was evidentally having a pretty bad time with a lot at this time, and he composed a slab of white hot anger-- there's really nothing else at all to it but that. Now this isn't necessarily a bad thing, but when you're not there, it gets monotonous at times.

Mind you, at some point last year, I was angry and felt betrayed, and I put on "Broken", and it worked for me, but since I've gotten over that anger, it hasn't worked as well again (on a side note, as I was 26 at the time, the line "no new tale to tell, 26 years, on my way to hell" seemed to have an odd resonance...).

Still, its got its moments-- "Help Me I Am In Hell" is fantastic, a slice of calm admist the storm of the piece, and as far as blasts of pure anger go, they really get no better than "Wish". The rest of the EP proper is ok, "Gave Up" I used to really love until I saw Reznor do it live and suddenly the version on record, which struck me as quite a bit overproduced didn't work well for me, and "Happiness in Slavery" I just find downright annoying.

This one's been released in two forms, with a 3" single accompanying it, with a whole bunch of blank tracks after the EP itself (six songs), or as just eight tracks. The bonus material (however its in there) is two pieces-- a cover of Adam and the Ant's "Physical" anda Pigface's "Suck" (which Reznor did with that group). The former is sort of the next step of the "Sin" single cover of "Get Down Make Love"-- it also clearly points the way to the future, oozing with a bizarre sensuality even as it maintains a feel of anger and torment. "Suck" is closer in mood to the "Broken" tracks, though a bit more varied, with a nice funky bassline.

"Broken" is a great piece when you're in the right mood, but it lacks the subtlety and depth of Reznor's later work....more info
  • I love Trent Reznor, he never fails t o impress
(...)You see, it takes intellect to like NIN and the typical generic rock deuch-bag is going to not like NIN because they aren't 'straight forward enough' or my favorite 'they aren't even a real band'. If you have these feelings for Nine Inch Nails, (and are probably looking at this review just to see what all the weird NIN fans are writing about their favoite band), then please give this album a listen and become enlightened by the far more aggressive side of Trent Reznor. This certainly is not Pretty Hate Machine or Downward Spiral, not in terms of genius but in terms of sound. The guitars are much more heavy and obvious than regular NIN. The vocals are so passionate and raw and lowd that you cant help but memorize every word within the first few listens. My favorite song may have to be Last. The riff is bad ass and that solo thing in the beggining is so fu#king sick. Suck is a f*cking great song too. They all are though, Wish is amazing, so is Happiness in Slaver, jesus f*cking christ that song rocks, Gave Up and Physical are just as essential too. The two instrumentals are also good. Like I was saying earlier, if you are alienated by the traditional (amazing) NIN sound and want something a little more straight forward then definetely buy Broken. I wish my friends would give into it, there is a lacking of Nine Inch Nails fans around today. ...more info
  • For the Heaviest of NIN
If you are one of those people looking for the heaviest Nine Inch Nails release, you've found it. 1992's Broken features "Gave Up", "Wish", and "Happiness In Slavery", three of the heaviest NIN songs to date. "Last" is very good as well.

Being that it's the best EP release from Trent and Co, be sure to pick it up next time you stop by the old record store.

You also get two hidden tracks (98&99) "Physical (You're So)" (A cover of the Adam Ant song), and "Suck" (not my personal favorite, but done very well live)....more info

  • Standing Adjacent to the Grand Spiral
The only reason I chose not to rate this any higher is simply because Reznor has come out with albums at least two stars better than this -namely The Downward Spiral and The Fragile. Standing next to these albums this EP can only earnestly reach as far as three, maybe four, stars. At no point is Broken disappointing but also at no point is it as majestic as the forementioned albums. Definately a strong footnote in the scheme of all things Nine Inch Nails. However I personally overlook Broken when I think about or want to listen to a good Nine Inch Nails record. The reason being I find myself only listening to the best of what particular bands produce and there's so much great music out there. But if you have a profound appriciation for NIN then pick this up; it's certainly a tenacious escort to their fame. ...more info

  • Reznor's Best Album
IF the industrial genre tag should ever be applied to NIN, it should be on this album only. Dark as hell, heavy beats, lyrics surrounding torture, and thrashy songs all make this album amazing. The Skinny Puppy and Ministry influences can be heard througout, and Trent hits the Nail on the head (sorry for the pun!)

You can listen to this album every day for weeks and not get tired of it. Happyness in Slavery is my personal favorite song of the album, it's angry and at the same time. However every song on this album is stellar, including the bonus tracks (Trent's cover of "You're So Physical" is awsome)

After listening to this go download the Broken movie if you want to really see how pissed off trent was when he made this, it's still the most disturbing music video I've EVER seen....more info
  • Nine Inch Nails does Ministry
I'm sure you've heard the story behind this album, but I'll tell it again anyway. Pretty Hate Machine became a surprise hit. While it never broke into the top fourty it stayed in the top 100 for over a year, which is quite a feat. TVT felt that if they had more control over the music Trent recorded, than they could have an even bigger hit. Obviously Trent was not happy with this. This album was recorded secretly and is basically his "f**k you" to TVT. This is easily his angriest album, but if you can look past the angst you'll find a great mini-album.

This is not only his angriest album, but also the only one that would really fall into a Metal category. You can tell that Trent had been listening to a lot of Ministry around this time, because it sounds pretty much like their heavier albums with better singing. That's not to say that it's a total rip-off, though. These songs are a lot catchier than Ministry was in their industrial-metal prime, and have a more melodic feel to them. There are also no political messages or samples, which were, and still are, a big part of Ministry.

The album opens with Pinion, a short instrumental that repeats the same 6 chords over and over. It begins almost silent with something that sounds like the wind in the background, but as the song goes on it gets louder and louder until it finally becomes undistorted. 3/5

Immediately after the last few chords of Pinion, Wish begins with a very memorable drum beat. This is probably the most well known song on the album. It has an interesting music video, and it won a Grammy for best Heavy Metal song of 1993. It's easy to see why. It follows Trent's signature loud-soft-loud plan, and it's as good as any of his heavier songs. 5/5

Next is my personal favorite song on the album, Last. A lot of people find the lyrics to be cheesy, and I will say that he goes a bit over the top here. But the music is incredible. It's very rare that a song can be both this catchy and still retain all of its heaviness, but this songs suceeds. It also contains probably the best solos I've heard in an NIN song to date. 5/5

After Last is Help Me I Am In Hell, which is a short, soft instrumental break before the chaos of the next track. It's almost acoustic, and it keeps the album from becoming monotous. 4/5

The album's fifth track is the very noisy Hapiness in Slavery, the other single from the album. The video for this song featured performance artist Bob Flanigan being tortured to death. Of course this wasn't real, but the video was quickly banned from MTV after one airing, which usually gets more publicity for a song than being in rotation anyway. This is probably the only thing to hint at the Downward Spiral, but it still doesn't feel out of place. 5/5

The actual album finishes with Gave Up. Like Wish, it opens with a memorable drum beat, and is probably the most straightforward rock track on the album. However, it's also one of those songs that sounds a lot better live than in the studio. The version found on And All That Could've Been is much better. This version is still nice, though. 5/5

Depending on your copy of the album, the next track will be Physical, the album is over, or there are many tracks of silence following Gave Up. You should still have the last two tracks in some form, though.

The first of the two bonus tracks is Physical, which is a good cover of Adam Ant. If you listen closely you will hear Trent's dog barking in the background, and Trent will say "Eat your heart out Stevie", referring to his situation with TVT. This is a great track quite unlike anything Trent has done. It's also probably his raunchiest one, even more so than Closer. 5/5

The second of the two tracks is Suck, which has seen many versions, including various demos. While Trent was involved with the first released version by Pigface, this one is a lot different. That version was just Trent's vocals, Drums, and Bass, but Trent has fleshed it out with guitars on the chorus and a catchier bass line. He also added a bridge to the song. The opinion seems fairly unanimous that this version is better. Even Pigface plays it Trent's way. This also seems to be one of Trent's favorite songs to play live. The version on And All That Could Have Been is a bit heavier, but I think they're equally good. 5/5

If you're more into metal than alternative rock, than this is the NIN album for you. Even if you're not really a metal fan, you should still check it out, because it's a lot more interesting than some metal, and obviously it's more than just straightforward metal. It's the best EP Trent ever released and it's a very important chapter in the history of Nine Inch Nails. If you had any previous interest in NIN and don't own this, then you shouldn't hesitate. You won't be let down....more info
  • Battle Royal: TVT vs. Trent Reznor
This, possibly the angriest record in the Nine Inch Nails catalog, is supposedly Trent letting loose a lot of hatred towards certain record company representatives. I don't really care about all that, all I know is that this is a great EP. Now, while I'll take musical greatness where I can get it, I could have gone for a full LP of Broken material (as long as it wasn't anything from Fixed). I suppose the best way to describe this album is as such; Distortion over-ridden guitars bludgeon your ears as Trent Reznor seethes hatred from his pores, and some neat keyboard plunking. Reminiscent of early Ministry, you can definitely spot the influence that "The Land of Rape and Honey" may have had on this album, but it still remains an example of Trent Reznor's mastery of organic instruments mixed with industrial chaos.

Key Songs: Wish, Help Me I Am In Hell, Happiness in Slavery, Gave Up, Suck....more info

  • Short but powerful
NIN's second major album, 'Broken' is very different from Trent's debut, 'Pretty Hate Machine.' But 'Broken' is even better than the first, and one of the best metal albums ever released. While PHM had a feeling of sadness, 'Broken' is pure rage. It's short, but packs a violent punch and will leave you with a feeling of emptiness and a desire for more. ...more info
  • Best of the best
I remember the first time I heard this album back in 1992-93, it hooked me right away. I had heard stuff from Pretty Hate Machine, and didn't think too much about the synth-poppy feel of it, but this one was hard, gritty, angry and raw. This is what made me a NIN fan. I like Pretty Hate Machine, I get Downward Spiral, I thought Fragile was going to be better, but this album reached in, grab my insides, flailed me with them and then screamed my brains out. Happiness in Slavery was one of my favorite tracks on any CD for quite a while, but in recent years Wish and Gave Up both became so much more than they ever had been before. Give it a listen, buy it, and shove it down other people's throats. This is what true NIN fans are all about....more info

"can this world really be as sad as it seems...?" this album is pure honesty about the world we live in, albeit from a masculine perspective. • Sincere Desperation
I have had this CD for years and just found out there are hidden tracks on it. One is a cover of an Adam Ant tune, which blows the original away, and the other is something that belongs on a hidden track, but is still quite digestable. This short album is perfect in its focused aggression/desperation. The short instrumentals make release for the tension long enough to make the latter all the better when it kicks in once again. Highly listenable for those that like it heavy. Some of Trent's best work, but what more can be said about that? ...more info
  • .........
If Pretty Hate Machine was Nine Inch Nails' "pop" album then this is definatly Trent's "thrash" album. This, taking its running time into consideration, is NINs most angry album. There are 8 songs, two of which are short instrumentals. The instumentals are Pinion and Help Me I am in Hell, and there is also a cover of Adam Ant's Physical. If you are new to NIN then pick up PHM or the Downward Spiral and save this one for later or you might be turned off....more info
  • Pretty Hate Machine's complete opposite
This ep packs quite a large punch despite it's time which barely breaks 30 minutes. This was Nine Inch Nails' sequel to Pretty Hate Machine.
Broken is the polar opposite to PHM. 3 years was definately worth the wait for those who loved the group.

Broken is a bluster of anger noise and pain. It differs also in that this time around Trent Reznor points the blame on himself more so than anything (as he would come to do on The Downward Spiral in 94). It may be to some an unbearable listen. Broken is also more guitar-based than drums.

Another important thing is that Broken is a somewhat transitional album.
It smoothes the gap between Pretty Hate Machine and Spiral. It contains the catchy songwriting of Pretty, yet has the same notched-up production and distorted guitars that Spiral would have shortly after.

On it's own merits, this is a very unique EP and it's one of Reznor's best releases. I consider this album to be NIN's Broken / Spiral period. Not like the Fragile which was very disappointing, especially with a 5 1/2 year wait.

I compare this material to Depeche Mode's Songs of Faith and Devotion 1993 or (Oingo) Boingo's Second Self-Titled album in 94....more info

  • PISSED OFF?
Nine Inch Nails never has dissapointed me so far. When I first got this cd and I listened to the whole thing I didn't like it that much. but every time I listen to some of the songs on this cd I just like them more and more. A couple of these songs on this cd are some of Trent Reznor's most angry and innapropriate of all. (Especially the infamous Hapiness In Slavery) There are a couple songs on this cd though that I don't like. Including the opening guitar solo called Pinion. Also Help Me I'm in Hell. But the rest of the songs are definately worth listening to. Wish, Hapiness In Slavery, and Gave up are probably the higlights of this cd.

Pinion 2/5: This is just a boring guitar solo to inroduce this cd

Wish 5/5: This is a great, fast and loud song to begin this great cd

Last 4/5: At first I didn't like this song, but like all of Tren't work it started to grow on me. I don't know if it's me but this song sounds a lot like a song from Godsmack.

Help me I'm in Hell 1/5: This is a really boring and unecesarry instrumental song.

Hapiness in Slavery 5/5: One of the angriest and obscene Nine Inch Nails songs I've heard. Basically it is about a man being tortured.

Gave up 4/5: A very weird and great song. It's impossible to know what he is saying without reading the lyrics. My only complaint is that his voice is a little too distorted.

Physical 4/5: This song I think is about a girl who just likes it rough. I'm not sure what Tren't singing because this song isn't even listed in the lyrics page of the album. It also sounds really different from the rest of their stuff, it's got more of a heavy metal feel to it.

Suck 4/5: Another hidden song on this cd. I like it a lot and it is pretty loud.

So there you have it. This is a very awsome and cheap cd. Besides the fact that it is only eight songs you will definately not be let down.

  • Not a Classic, But a Great Listen
I love nine inch nails and would rate The Fragile, Pretty Hate Machine, and Downward Sprial Higher. If I could have given three and a half stars I would have but I couldn't. Sixty percent isn't quite right but close enough. The album just isn't perfect, it has no overall theme and there aren't that many songs on it. The songs that are on it are awesome, especially "physical", a cover, and "happiness in slavery," which is actually done best on the Woodstock '94 cd. This is still an album for NIN to be proud of, it most definitely influenced his future albums as well as many others. Five Stars for Pretty Hate Machine and Downward Spiral, Four stars for the Fragile, and two stars for his remix records....more info
  • Best EP ever.....EVER DO YOU HEAR ME EVER
When Nine Inch Nails first came onto the scene with "Pretty Hate Machine" back in '89, they had much more of a techno-industrial thing going, almost 80's dance-esque type stuff. Just go check it out, it is an amazing album nonetheless. Not their best in my opinion, but hey, onto the "Broken" EP. As NIN always has done, Trent Reznor (basically NIN itself and mastermind supreme) progressed NIN into a much heavier, angrier sound. Much more raw. Songs such as "Wish" and "Happiness and Slavery" are instant classics, and lest we forget one of the hidden tracks, "Suck", which is actually a cover of a song Trent originally did with a band by the name of Pigface and if you don't know them you've really been living under a rock and I do not know what to tell you. But yes, "Broken" is an instant masterpiece, 8 song, 33 minutes, awesome album no matter how short it is....more info

"Last" & "Wish"(of course) are two bad ass songs that i consider to be some of NINs best..."Happiness in Slavery" is a song that i love now but didn't at first...it kinda grows on you. oh, and if you're a true freak, i'de advise ya to check out the vid for "happiness in slavery", its pretty sic!!!!!(no really) yeah and "Suck" is another good one....f***, just go pick up this one and i wont have to keep rambling like A drunk-ass...more info

I have never been a Nine Inch Nails fan but I love this CD. It is powerful and explosive. I particularly like the extra track, "Physical." • Awesome!!!
This is Trent's second best release, inferior only to The Downward Spiral. This very angry and desperate ep directly proceeded one of the greatest albums ever. Four awesome tracks - Wish, Last, Happiness In Slavery, Gave Up - together with some ambient and some hidden tracks. Contrary to his poppy debut album, this ep is ultra-heavy and packed with catchy but punishing guitar riffs. The vocals are awesome too, varying from eerie whispers, beautiful singing to screaming his guts out. Of the four above mentioned key tracks it is very hard to pick a favourite, but Wish and Happiness In Slavery are among the most awesome, depraved NIN-tunes ever! Sound quality and production are excellent. This is one of the greatest ep's ever recorded, simple as that. Get this essential NIN-recording!! ...more info

This is one of the defining albums from NIN, and the one that keeps coming back into my CD player all the time.

Just a couple of comments on the other reviews:
Its an EP not an album - thats why its short ;-)
Physical is a cover of an Adam Ant song - so thats why it sounds a bit different from the other stuff, its the only non-original ;-)

A great heavy album that is fantastic live as well...more info
