"I ordered "The Textbook of Medical Physiology" 11th edition by Guyton and Hall. The books (a 2 volume set) came but the covers look like they have water damage and the pages look photocopied. The text was supposed to have colored pictures, but they are all black and white. The binding is broken on both of the books and when you open the books the pages are not firmly attached and are falling out in clumps due to binding problems. The covers are not firmly attached to the binding of the book either. Overall, these appear to be copies of the text, and nothing similar to the actual book. It's almost as if it was photocopied and put in a binding. The print doesn't even line up properly on the page The figures are only partially visible, and there is noticeable outlining (like from photo copying). Having seen several copies of the book, this is definitely NOT the original text. ". I sent a few emails which were answered and they refused to refund my money claiming I could have already read the 1000 pages of the text book. Over all I WILL NOT AND WOULD NOT buy anything from this seller. ...more info
  • Great reference text
I got this in the post the other day. Very thorough, great reference text. Not at all readable. Nice to have nearby as a reference but not a good text if you're attempting to synthesize material for the first time....more info
  • The BIBLE of Physiology
R.I.P. Guyton, the best medical scientific writer that the world has ever known. This book is his masterpiece. Believe me, I have read it, this represents the best medicine textbook. Clear, thorough and simple writing. Every single detail of human physiology is explained.
The magic of this great book is that the author mentions several times the details needed to understand a physiological process.
This great man, doctor and scientist had poliomyelitis and couldn't walk, but he instead wrote a masterpiece that will not be forgotten.

Buy it, read it, and then the magic of medicine will capture you.

  • Extremely well written and very clear
If you need a thorough or even basic understanding of physiology, this book is great. It is extremely well written and 99% of it makes sense on the first read-through. My professor keeps saying how great this book, and i completely agree with her. ...more info
  • The BEST Medical Physiology Texbook ever!
I advise every medical student to read from this great book. It might be time-consuming, but believe me once you read the beginning of any chapter, you still want to read it till you finish it! What makes reading even more interesting is the clinical relevance presented at the end of each chapter, which makes you understand the mechanism of a disease. Its biggest drawback is its lack of enough diagrams and illustrations, which if present are still poor, compared to other illustrated physiology books....more info
  • great all around service
I purchased a medical book for my graduate school class. The book was used but still in pretty good condition as the post described. The price was a great deal in comparison with what the university is charging, and the fact that my funds are limited. Customer service was very helpful in answering my questions, and my book was promptly shipped the day after I ordered it even though it was during the busy holidays. I recommend Woody's Books definitely!!!...more info
  • Guyton prepares you for the shelf
I bought both this book and Costanzo for my first year physio class and loved the Guyton book. He explains everything very well so that you understand why systems work the way they do. Costanzo, while easy to read, tends to dumb the information down, and as a result, you end up memorizing facts instead of understanding concepts. At my medical school, we take the shelf as the final, and after reading Guyton I felt really prepared, whereas most of my classmates who read Costanzo felt dazed....more info
  • Not a good book to study for the boards.
Reading Guyton in medical school is extremely difficult. The book is extremely dilute and very comprehensive. It is so comprehensive, in fact, that it doesn't teach you what you need to know for the boards. If you want to learn all the important points and skip the garbage that isn't important at all, like how pH monitors work, then buy the pocket version of this book. It can be read much faster and it has plenty of detail to it. I highly recommend doing this if your med school class is using Guyton. I also found it helpful to supplement the pocket book with the review book, which has questions....more info
  • Guyton's medical physiology
As a hospital librarian, I have found Guyton's to be an invaluable resource. When I need to search for information on physiological processes that I don't fully understand, Guyton's is the first source I turn to.

The language is clear and accessible, and the illustrations are helpful. The text does a marvellous job of presenting complex information in a way that can be grasped quickly....more info
  • Medical physiology
The book is a nice introduction to the physiological systems in the human body, and gives a detailed description for a lot of physiological conditions pertaining to the different systems. It is very informative, and precise....more info
  • Best physiology book
In my opinion this is the best physiology book out there. If you are just starting physiology this is the book to get. It is very good at explaining things and the fact that it never assumes you know something in any chapter makes it repeat many of the basic stuff - it just enters your head.

This is the best to learn as you go, to update your knowledge and to learn if you have time. However, the throughout descriptions and repetitions that make it so good, make it a bad book if you only have a few days to learn this. In that case I would recommend Ganong's....more info
  • Testbook of Medical Physiology, 10th ed.
This book is for a graduation gift for a nursing student. My review is actually based on the previous edition which I have been using...I am assuming that the 10th ed. is simular except for inclusion of the most up todate changes. Because the previous edition was so useful to me (I am a nurse with an MSN) I felt this new graduate would benefit from her own Guyton. I have been a user of Guyton for years (34) and have never been disappointed in its content or it's ability to explain a situation to an extent that I could now understand what was happening to a patient and why a course of action was being taken or to give me enough information to advise appropriately on a course of action....more info
  • Medical Physiology
Excellent & concise textbook. Reader friendly with information organized in educational ready information. Will be useful in securing information.
Would recommend highly to other profesionals....more info
  • Still the best
We've seen a marked improvement in year two, pre-board comprehensive physiology test scores (21%) among students who switched from our old text to this one. I just wish I could get more students to read the text instead of the PowerPoints. It would really help out our board scores....more info
  • Still the best
This is still the best textbook in physiology beyond a doubt. I just wish they hadn't stopped printing the lower level verison because there's a lot of poor physiology textbooks out there....more info
  • Great Service!
I received the book in a timely manner, and it was in fantastic shape. Thank you!!...more info
  • Physio book
The book is a good reference, have not actually used it too much for studying yet. Amazon completely let me down in shipping how ever, it took nearly 2 weeks to get the book, that was shipping from North St. Louis County to West County. ...more info
  • best physiology book
I think this is the best physiology book that i've ever read. The language is simple yet it is totally scientific in nature.
I would recommend this book to any person who wants to have an in depth knowlegde of human physiology.
you can be a doctor, scientist or even a student and I guarantee this book will help you in understanding physiology....more info
  • Title should be: Concepts Made Complicated
Ok everyone raves about this book. It is true that this book covers everything you need to know. However, the trick is not to get lost in their ridiculously long explanations that are repeated over and over and over each chapter. Seriously, this book could be condensed to half the size. Further, they mention a couple sentences about a concept and then quit and say "more on this to come later". They probably do that about a thousand times. Truthfully, i just got annoyed by reading the book. It is obnoxious and everything, from their graphs to their flow charts, is made to sound more complicated that it has to be and is encoded in erroneous/needless fluff. Medical students do not have much time, THAT IS TO SAY time is valuable, WHICH MEANS there is not much of it, SO YOU COULD CONCLUDE you should use time efficiently AND THIS MEANS... - if you found the previous sentence pointless and annoying, go with something else, perhaps BRS!...more info
  • Still the best
This is still the best textbook in physiology beyond a doubt. I just wish they hadn't stopped printing the lower level verison because there's a lot of poor physiology textbooks out there.
    What's good about it?
    1. It's accurate - something that's been greatly de-emphasized recently.
    2. It's comprehensive and fairly well balanced - You have pretty good balance because the individual faculty members have responsibilities for selected chapters (I know this because I worked in Arthur Guyton's department).
    3. It's relevant - The very best clinical correlation and, most importantly, is designed to support rational diagnosis. Most physiology textbooks are actually designed to facilitate memorization (using memorization instead of understanding is why many physicans can't make a correct diagnosis when the case is not clear cut).
If you're a medical students, don't waste your time on any other text book. You owe it to yourself and your future patients to learn it right!...more info
  • Better than the teacher
Great text. Normally the instructor makes the interpretation easier but not in this case. Chapters are concise and key points are repeated throughout. May be redundant in some cases but helps illustrate the interconnected nature of physiological processes....more info
  • good complete text
Good detailed explanations. I wish there were more explanatory diagrams, tho. I will keep this text even after the class - good reference...more info
  • Great book.....but
I think Guyton's a good book, but the content is recitative. Its great for med students who do not plan to go into Internal medicine.
A little superficial on neurology and Neurophysiology as well as Respiratory physiology.
I loved it till I found Ganong's! ...more info
  • Guyton-Physiology book
It is written very well. I recommend this book to everybody who wants to read on physiology and pathophysiology. ...more info
  • Physiology??
This is a good book if you need a simple review of physiology. But it doesn't have any practice problems so you can't test yourself to see if you really understand the concepts....more info
  • easy reading compared to berne and levy
I am a first year medical student and I find this particular physiology book easy to work with. Although Berne and Levy may be more detailed, Guyton's explanations are uncomplicated and simple. It basically covers everything in physiology and it has been a big help in problem based learning since a lot of different topics are integrated....more info
  • This book is so awesome it's ineffable
It's impossible for me to convey how great this book is. I am a second year medical student and rather burnt out on pathology right now. But then ah yes I listen to Guyton's sweet melodic words of physiology and realize that here is a physiology text book that actually makes sense! The way this book flows from topic to topic is just heavenly. Learning seems to not be so much a chore but rather a homeostatic mechanism--Guyton sends ripples through your brain, and your only option is to LEARN PHYSIOLOGY! And Guyton is great at making correlations between physiology and pathology, or biochemisty, etc. His book is actually a book about MEDICINE, using physiologic principles as the foundation. I agree with the reviewer who said that all graphs/figures are explained well--they are indeed. I think that his judicious use of figures only increases the value of this book, because he spends his time wisely talking about physiology rather than the results of some experiment which I'm not even sure was performed in the first place. Conclusion: 5 stars is too modest, try 50!!...more info
  • Simply great
This is probably the most venerated and widely used physiology textbook ever. I used an earlier edition of this book 30 years ago as a young neurobiology student, and I found it very readable despite the quite respectable level of technical difficulty. Guyton, unlike a lot of science and textbook writers, just knows how to write, and I say that as a former science writer and editor myself who edited 50 books in various fields. Medical students have used it to pass their boards, and doctoral students in physiology have used it for a comprehensive review, and I used it in my own graduate studies. My field being neurobiology, I was most interested in the chapter on that, but I also enjoyed the chapters on heart physiology and renal physiology, and immunology also. There are other books you an also read that are strong on various areas, such as Vander on nephrology, which I read also, but this one is still my hands down favorites. By the way, Darrel's great review has good suggestions on the other books to supplement your reading with....more info
  • AMAZING
This book is simply amazing and the classic text on physiology. There were so many times in medical school and even now in residency when I was totally confused and clueless about some topic....when I used this book to read up on it, all the facts became crystal clear and easy to understand. Bottom line: GREAT book, highly recommend for med school and beyond!!!!...more info
  • This the Bible of Human Machine
It is very nice book. Everything is explained in details, up to date (of course if you get the latest edition). Chapters are arranged according to systems. Requires certain background in Cell Biology, Biochemistry and Human Anatomy. Fundamental concepts are not repeated here for memory refreshment. There are some but not many clinical applications which I wish there was more. Some applications of drug therapy again very minimal. A book that you will refer time and time and once you grasp this book in it's all dimensions you can start to link etiologies to each other and everything makes sense....more info
