Product Description

What do you do? Tim Ferriss has trouble answering the question. Depending on when you ask this
controversial Princeton University guest lecturer, he might answer:

“I race motorcycles in Europe.”
“I ski in the Andes.”
“I scuba dive in Panama.”
“I dance tango in Buenos Aires.”

He has spent more than five years learning the secrets of the New Rich, a fast-growing subculture who has abandoned the “deferred-life plan” and instead mastered the new currencies—time and mobility—to create luxury lifestyles in the here and now.

Whether you are an overworked employee or an entrepreneur trapped in your own business, this book is the compass for a new and revolutionary world. Join Tim Ferriss as he teaches you:

• How to outsource your life to overseas virtual assistants for $5 per hour and do whatever you want
• How blue-chip escape artists travel the world without quitting their jobs
• How to eliminate 50% of your work in 48 hours using the principles of a forgotten Italian economist
• How to trade a long-haul career for short work bursts and freuent "mini-retirements"
• What the crucial difference is between absolute and relative income
• How to train your boss to value performance over presence, or kill your job (or company) if it’s beyond repair
• What automated cash-flow “muses” are and how to create one in 2 to 4 weeks
• How to cultivate selective ignorance—and create time—with a low-information diet
• What the management secrets of Remote Control CEOs are
• How to get free housing worldwide and airfare at 50–80% off
• How to fill the void and create a meaningful life after removing work and the office

You can have it all—really.

  • Challenges your notions on work, play, and retirement
This is an incredible book for those whose mind is open to question some of their most basic assumptions. It's one thing to hear the phrase "work smarter not harder", but it's quite different when it comes with detailed instructions and examples.

While it helps to have the author's life as an example, sometimes the author pushes his values/preferences a little too much. At those times, readers just need to focus on the bigger picture. Some big picture ideas most can benefit from:

    - money is a vehicle, not a destination
    - time is the most valuable commodity
    - focus on raising your hourly wage, not your annual salary
    - don't defer your dreams, especially not until retirement

This book, in addition to making you think, can actually help you get much more out of life, not only by inspiring you, but with tools and resources. In addition to many tools and resources in the book, there are more on the book's companion web site. Even if you choose not to have a four hour work week, this book can still help you enjoy life more. What more can you want from a book?

  • Just watch the cash roll in
I read this book during 4-5 visits to the bookstore. Since I run a business of my own (two businesses), I can tell you that without work and committment, you won't produce anything. Sure, you can sell anything to anyone using the Web but success requires work - a lot more work than 4 hours per week.

However, I liked the attitude in the book. Author writes and thinks like the minority of the population.

Book title is very unrealistic but catchy and certainly helps sell this book which once again proves that you can sell anything to anyone if you appeal to people's desires.

I cannot give the book more than two stars because it severely understates the effort that goes into building any business from scratch - even if you rely on outside help....more info

  • Live outside the Box!
"The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich" by Timothy Ferris is a delightful book in the way it presents new ideas and challenges the status quo of living your life the way you've always lived it. To tell the truth, I found the notions so unbelievable and foreign that I put it down after the first few chapters. But I still remained intrigued and found myself plowing through it. His ideas are really mind-blowing.

Another book, I found to be mind-blowing is How to Create a Magical Relationship: The 3 Simple Ideas that Will Instantaneously Transform Your Love Life by Ariel & Shya Kane. The Kanes do courses in NYC and elsewhere in the world on how to live a self-aware lifestyle. In their book, they have catalogued an amazing array of behavioral patterns and mental traps that we as human beings seem to fall into and show us how to recognize and thereby avoid them. I highly recommend all of these books!...more info
  • Recycled how to get rich parables
This book extols the virtues of being free from the constraints of the typical places of employment. The no need to be present, let others work for you business owner. This is an easy sell. The rest of the story is a how to, consisting of the following directions: Find something to sell that people want, test your market, and then have orders taken, product packaged and shipped by someone else so that you can ski, lie on the beach, compete in international tournaments or whatever excites you, while someone else does the work.
Sounds easy. Oh yeah, and while you're working, Don't waste time.
    Thank's for the advice....more info
  • Even if you're a Wage Slave, this book will help
It's great to focus and strive for paring your work week down to just 10% of what most people do now, but that number's so small, it seems almost impossible to do. Enter The 4 Hour Workweek, which is a step by step guide to outsourcing, deligating and succeeding. Even if you can't get out of the rat race yet, this book gives you instant techniques to trim the fat from your work week so that you spend your time on the most productive tasks. It's called the 80/20 principle and you should embrace it as dogma. I would recommend this book to anyone with a job, so that opens it up to everyone, right?

  • Hey Boss Can I Work From Home?
This is going to be simple.

I work for a major ad agency in New York. I can't work from home. No one works from home and if they do it's rare. Working out a work from home agreement? HAHA. You don't see lawyers or doctors asking to work from home because it just doesn't work in those industries.

If you happen to work in a industry that this would be compatible with, then awesome, because you may be able to take Ferris' advice.

If you own your own business, then perhaps automating other processes will work out and allow you more free time.

But if you're like the rest of us in a major metropolitan area, this not a book for you. It'll just make you feel like you wasted your time because most jobs in metro areas are not compatible with working from home. Straight up....more info
  • Endless dribble!
I think the real secret to the four hour work week is write a poorly written book with a catchey tittle, sell it to people who are tired of their boring office jobs and never have to work again!

In the book, Tim talks about elimination. How if you cut down the time to complete a task, like an essay or research project you will increase your focus and produce a better piece of work. The painfull thing about this book is that it does contain some interesting pieces and useful pieces of information, but access these pieces you have to trawl through Tim's dribble.

  • Not (quite) as ridiculous as it looks
Mr. Ferris undoubtedly used these techniques to build an enviable lifestyle, but I think that his amazing self-promotion skills were at least as important as the systems he describes. Still, while I don't expect to be able to run around the world off the proceeds of an internet trinket-selling business (and I don't think that I could really respect myself if that was my contribution to society), I do think that many of the concepts and techniques that he introduces will improve the way that I do the work that I find meaningful.

In summary, read it with skepticism, and you will be pleasantly surprised with some great tips and points of view....more info
  • create your perfect job
Timothy Ferris's book is totally relevant for today's GFC Global Financial Crisis. It is one of the essentail resources. The other is a website that offers a parallel servcie. I like using [...] to look for jobs because it has jobs only from employer websites and far more jobs than you will find on other job boards. If you merge the ideas from the Ferris book with screeing for jobs; you will get results. M.Kaplan...more info

  • Pure Garbage
This book is garbage. I donated it to my local library shortly after completing it. First off - the number of plugs Ferriss puts in his book is unbelievable. He's clearly getting a small cut from each of these people who want to "advertise" in his book. Secondly - he talks mostly about himself throughout this book. As opposed to Guy Kawasaki who might actually give instructions, and most likely will inspire, Tim Ferriss is so insecure about himself that he has to talk about his own dance skills before he gets into the meat of the book.

This is the plan that Timmy here recommends - get your company to let you work remotely. Once they say yes (because that's just SO easy for everyone apparently), then you stop actually delivering results because now you're working from home, you outsource all your tasks to do (yes he really tells you to outsource ALL your job work), you travel to countries where the dollar is quite strong, and then in your spare time on a beach lagoon you create a product that can sell. You sell this product in exclusive magazines and TV - you don't try and mass market it because then it becomes a commodity. By only advertising in select places, you control the price forever, as he says. Bear in mind - you're doing all this because your company is willing to turn a deaf ear to your lack of results.

Wait - there's more. Instead of creating a product - which can be easily replicated - create something else - INFORMATION, he says. Create an instructional DVD or CD (and of course he shows you the best places to produce them for you), or perhaps write an instructional book, and then sell this book to the masses. I'm sitting there reading this book and it occurred to me - this guy just DID EXACTLY THAT to me! He created so-called information, marketed the hell out of it via a blog and a catchy title, and then I lost my $19.99 to him. So I've been made out like a fool, and it was so easy that he explains how everyone can do it.

This book is so filled with garbage that Tim Ferriss actually spends several pages in his book writing a line by line SCRIPT that you can use with your boss when you persuade them to let you work from home. Save your time and your money. Guy Kawasaki is better - start a good business, claim tax benefits, and work hard, and you'll be happy. Did anyone really think you can make enough money to live and support a family when you only work four hours a week? Pure garbage....more info

This is the 3rd copy I've purchased. After I read my original copy, I bought extras to share with friends/family. • Not Impressed, Book Title SHOULD be: "How to Free Up Time by Outsourcing Your Work"
I read this book after rave reviews from friends and critics and I was NOT impressed. Most of the book was "hype" to me. The focus of the book was about outsourcing your work to free up your time. I really don't believe the title or the book summary properly describes the content. I would more appropriately name this book "How to Free Up Time by Outsourcing your Work"...more info
  • This book is a denial killer
You already know most of what Tim says. But if you're like me, you've spent your life being trained to forget it, deny it, rationalize it. No more. This book is full of hilarious anecdotes, real life examples and actionable challenges. You will say "damn, that's me" over and over again. Just remember, acknowledgement is the first stop on the road to recovery......more info
  • "Escape 9-5 & Live Anywhere" (Because You're Jobless & Homeless)
I am a sucker for NYT non-fiction bestsellers. I figure, if everyone else is reading it, I should read it -- at least for cultural edification.

And so I joined the millions of other suckers who've read (or tried to read) this book. I suck, and this book sucks.

His basic principle -- outsourcing -- is great in principle, but not in practice. I am a lawyer. How do I outsource brief-writing? Client correspondence? Associate development? And if I do outsource those things to people, to whom do they outsource things? How sustainable is this? The only way I could make his theory really work is to change jobs.

The writing is simply horrible. The book reads like a long, badly written Powerpoint. I.e., too many bullet points, too many headings, too many quotes, and too much text. (and I like Powerpoints!)

    Stay away....more info
  • Very good book!
A very interesting book, Tim Ferriss is a real source of inspiration and his advices are great. I am already trying to apply his lifestyle design principles and I believe it can work. Don't hesitate a second and read this book!...more info
  • It CAN change your life!
Is achieving the 4-Hour Workweek easy, according to Tim Ferris' book. Heck no. But is it achievable? Heck yes!

The ideas Tim shares in the books are revolutionary, transformative and likely WAY outside your comfort zone, but having said that, I have been trying to implement them a little at a time, and I'm seeing results.

If you feel out of control of your work life and aren't experiencing the "living" part of life, I recommend giving this book a read. Your head may explode, but only in good ways you probably need anyway.

  • Motivation for the Motivated Entrepreneur
If you are looking for a motivational book on how to become more effective in your life, this book is for you! While a 4-hour workweek might not be practical for most of us, you can have more free time and be more effective in your "work time" if you follow a few of the author's tips.

As an entrepreneur myself, following the author's outsourcing tips, I have cut my workload by more than 90%. I still handle customer service myself, but all of my order processing is now handled by a third party company, and it costs me less than $2 per order. As a result, I no longer have to pay for storage for my product and don't have to worry about hiring staff as my company continues to grow. Instead, I spend 20 or 30 minutes a day sending a few emails and forwarding orders to my fulfillment center and they handle the rest. I now have time to work a full-time corporate job, yet I still get an extra $4-5k per month in my bank account. Thanks Tim Ferris!...more info
  • Totally Subversive!
I recently came across a book called "The 4 Hour Work Week" by Timothy Ferris. The tagline on the book is "Escape 9-5, live anywhere and join the new rich."The 4 Hour Work Week - Timothy Ferris

Since I am already a believer in working from home and entrepreneurship, I picked up this book, hoping for tips on how to reduce my working time while increasing my income.

This book is totally subversive! If you are a boss and you see your employees reading this, watch out!

Here is what I loved about this book:

    * It offered ways to achieve a 4 hour work week for BOTH entrepreneurs and people who keep their jobs, unlike other techniques that require you to quit your job.

    * It is a whole new way of thinking about money and life - this book totally transformed my thinking to a new level.

    * It is easy to read with lots of examples and some great stories.

Here are key points from the book:

    * Waiting until you retire to have the life you want is insane - this book shows you how to take "mini-retirements" every year as a way of sampling your retirement. My mother died at age 54, so I have always felt that waiting for retirement is crazy.

    * How to disconnect your income from a particular geographic location. Something I have worked at over the last few years to allow me to travel.

    * How to eliminate 80% of your work while keeping your income and results. A lesson I am getting better at myself.

    * How to travel the world without quitting your job.

    * "New Rich" concept - A millionaire working 80 hours per week isn't really rich - just stressed. Someone earning $5,000 to $10,000 per month working 4 hours a week is richer in time and is able to generate life enriching experiences. I am really connecting to this concept. I have never felt the need for insane amounts of money - just enough to live the way I want, travel and experience life without being tied to a job or business

    * Entrepreneurs must learn to become business "owners" instead of "managers."

I highly recommend this book and think EVERYONE should have a copy. I have made it required reading for my coaching students.

It is a #1 Wall Street Journal bestseller, to give you an idea of how popular it is.

  • The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich
The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich I heard about "The 4-Hour Workweek" in a business building class at ICA. Timothy Ferris describes in a very entertaining way how to work 4 hours a week and join the new rich. It's not a book for the fearful or for those who are stuck in the status quo. Like every other great idea - there are those who will pick it up and run with it and those who will shake their heads and stay stuck.

It's definitely an entertaining read....more info
  • Overall tricky and a let down
I lost my faith in the author only a few pages into the book. He grabbed my attention early on by saying he became the National Chinese kickboxing champion with only 4 weeks of preparation. I assumed this meant that he must have amazing ability and be able to learn new skills very fast. Being an athlete myself, I was impressed and wanted to learn more.

But then he explained how he did it: By exploiting the loopholes he found in the rules. He did not even try to legitimately fight his opponents, instead he just pushed them out of the ring or something.

I'm a cross country skier, and was a high school champion. If some huckster like Tim managed to win that race by somehow not putting forth any real effort, while the rest of us put in hundreds of hours of training each year, I don't think many of us would respect him. I don't think Tim could get away with this kind of trick in many sports. If he can repeat it in another sport that doesn't have loopholes, I will reconsider listening to what he says. Otherwise, I have to conclude that he took me for a ride early on in the book.

This book seems to largely be built around the 'compelling' personality of the author, and if you take that part away the rest of the book becomes unimpressive, even unnecessary. The advice he gave in the book is not unique. There are dozens of other authors who say the same or similar things as Tim, but don't have to trick you into reading their book.

I agree with what Tim is promoting - a life doing what you want, when you want. But for me, even that life will lose meaning if I don't base it on integrity. ...more info
  • Defying Logic
I am a avid and rabid reader. I read pretty much anything and everything to do with business. I can honestly say there are only a handful of books that have completely changed the way I view business or how I do business. FHWW is absolutely one of those books!

The techniques and ideas Tim talks about are groundbreaking. Since reading his book I've utilized a personal assistant to help me with tasks that truthfully can be done by someone who earns waaaaay less per hour than I do. I honestly try to evaluate my daily workload regularly to make sure I'm not taking on tasks that distract me from doing what's important.

Here's a couple things (out of countless) that I regularly use from Tim's book:

    1. One of Tim's sayings is to ask yourself "am I inventing things to do to avoid the important." I ask myself this numerous times a day.
    2. Tim's philosophy of questioning why work for work's sake has completely changed how I view my business and personal life.

If you truly want a business book that will change your life this is definitely the book for you!!...more info
  • Thinking Outside the Box
This book has completely changed my view of work, business, and life in general. You have no idea what you are missing until you've read this book. It opens your eyes to what your life could be like, and then it instructs you on how to get there. It helps you realize what you really want in life, and then how to get it. Do not pass this book up....more info
  • this book tells a different way to do things!
This book tells a different way to do things. It shows you that it's possible to make a good living without working 40 (or more) hours per week.

This book is more about mindset than anything. If you're looking for a plan to work only 4-hours per week, it will give you some ideas, but as people have already pointed out in other reviews, these ideas may or may not be practical to you and your life.

Still though, what's in this book will work for some people and I think it's worth reading, just to show you that there is something other than what you have been taught.

The downside for me is that the author seems to "cheat" at a lot of things. When you read the book, you'll know what I'm talking about, since it's a recurring theme. For example, he got As in college, not by writing A papers, but by wearing down the professors who gave him Bs, until they gave in. Is that really an A? On paper maybe, but it's not A-quality, if you ask me....more info
  • Perfect for a new life-vision, but weak as a business "how-to"
Other reviewers don't seem to understand the REAL MESSAGE of the book:

    1. Life is short, and maybe it doesn't worth sacrificing everything for the sake of business success.

    2. It doesn't worth wasting your life on hard-work after some level of success.

    3. Building an income-machine IS possible, those who say it isn't are only justifying their own lack of capability.

    4. You MUST decide how you want to live your life: with little work, and moderate wealth, or with lots of work, and big wealth.

    5. More money doesn't mean a better life after some point.

Though if you need a guide, a how-to, or anything like that about building a better company, this book can make you disappointed......more info

  • 4HWW is a great investment
I loved this book and reference it frequently. Here's what the book did for me. It helped me understand some basic principles regarding time management, prioritizing and success. It's also a call to action. Tim says, "Make mistakes of ambition and not sloth." He also shares his formula for success. In exchange, you pay $15 for this book. You cannot deny the value of this type of investment. It's a great call to action for people who are afraid to let go of their secure, unfulfilling 9-5 job that will not help them retire early.

Some of Tim's advice is more kamikaze for my comfort level, but I have implemented some of his problem resolution and email strategies. I can appreciate his tactical tips, but the real value is in his philosophy.

Tim also walks the walk and you have to respect that. ...more info
