At one time, in the late 90s, it was the hope of many within the call center industry, that the deregulation of the utility industry would create the even greater demand and growth for the call center industry than the deregulation of the telecommunication industry did in the late 80s and early 90s.
However, as the utility deregulation slowed and faltered, the demand did not materialize as expected. Today, there are major contracts that are being outsourced to some of the large service bureaus, but for the most part, the utility industry has continued to handle their services in-house, online, or though IVR or speech recognition services.
